00:00It was a festive scene in the Vatican St. Peter's Square on Sunday as the Catholic faithful gathered to celebrate the 70th birthday of Pope Leo XIV.
00:10When Leo appeared for his traditional noon blessing, he was greeted with banners, balloons and signs in English, Italian and Spanish, wishing him a happy birthday.
00:23My dears, it seems you know that today I turn 70.
00:30I thank the Lord, my parents, and I'm grateful to all those who remembered me in their prayers.
00:51When he was elected last May, Leo was the youngest pope since John Paul II.
00:56He needs so much joy, so many prayers to give him the strength that he has.
01:04But even more, he needs a lot of strength because he has to work so hard.
01:09We support him with our prayers and with our affection.
01:13We love him very much.
01:14We're here, especially today, on his birthday.
01:17On Sunday afternoon, Leo presided over an ecumenical prayer service in honor of 21st century martyrs.
