Hundreds of thousands of young Catholics attend Pope Leo XIV's vigil at Holy Year youth festival

Hundreds of thousands of young Catholics descended on Rome for the Youth Jubilee, which kicked off on Tuesday evening with a mass by the Pope in St Peter's Square. They gathered for a vigil on Saturday night ahead of a Sunday mass held by the Pope.

00:00Hundreds of thousands of young Catholics gathered in Rome on Saturday for an evening vigil, outdoor slumber party and morning mass celebrated by Pope Leo XIV.
00:13For the past week, the pilgrims have descended on Rome for their special jubilee celebration.
00:19On Saturday, they arrived at the Torvogata field for its culmination, the encounter with Pope Leo.
00:25He hosted an evening vigil on the field. The young Catholics were then able to spend the night on the lawn there as they awaited the Pope's morning mass on Sunday.
00:36They reportedly come from 146 countries, with 68% of them coming from Europe.
00:43There were also young people from conflict zones including Lebanon, Iraq, Myanmar, Ukraine, Syria and South Sudan.
00:50There was one tragedy before Saturday's vigil began. The Vatican confirmed that an Egyptian 18-year-old had reportedly died of a cardiac arrest.
