Thorpe Marsh is set to become the UK’s largest battery storage site and among the largest in Europe, with a total planned capacity of 1.4GW (2.9GWh).
Built by Fidra Energy on the site of a former coal power station and next to a major National Grid substation, this will be a significant project in the UK’s energy transition.

00:00To decarbonise the energy system in the UK we need low carbon generation that's
00:13capable of providing power but there's not enough sun and there's not enough
00:17wind. This is the UK after all. At Fudra Energy we develop build and operate
00:23large-scale storage projects in the UK and other European markets. Battery
00:29storage is a safe proven technology that stores excess green electricity when
00:34there is too much of it and releases this when there is too little. We are
00:38developing three of the largest battery projects in the UK and the largest in
00:43Europe here at Thorpe Marsh.
00:48Thorpe Marsh is a 1.4 gigawatt site capable of powering 800,000 homes.
00:54Commercial operations will begin in October 2026.
00:59West Burton Sea is a 500 megawatt site capable of powering 300,000 homes.
01:06Commercial operations will begin in October 2027.
01:11Here at Thorpe Marsh we're building one of Europe's largest battery projects. It's going
01:30to be built on 55 acres and that's the equivalent of 42 full-sized football pitches.
01:38Being close to the centre of England allows the project to support national grid in balancing
01:43demand for electricity across different regions in the country. The project will also support
01:48130 full-time jobs during construction and a further 25 full-time jobs during its operating lifetime.
01:55At Fidra Energy we're powered by our people. We have a dedicated, passionate and experienced team
02:01with an exceptional track record in the energy sector. Backed by EIG, a leading investor in global energy and infrastructure
02:09projects with over 48 billion dollars already committed to this sector. Our vision is to become one of the leading
02:16battery storage businesses in Europe, providing reliable and clean energy for future generations.
