00:01We did go through quite a few dogs.
00:04We found you a match.
00:07She certainly ticks the fun box.
00:10It isn't just one chihuahua.
00:12It's a trio.
00:14Oh my God!
00:16She's five months old.
00:18Lisa Jack Russell.
00:20His name is Mushy.
00:25In a quiet corner of the English countryside,
00:28there's a place for those looking for love.
00:31There is only one chance at life.
00:34And I'm missing the dog.
00:36Good girl.
00:37Here, a dedicated team match abandoned dogs.
00:40You've been through a rough time, haven't you?
00:42It's okay, buddy.
00:43With hopeful new owners.
00:45We can trot together!
00:47Let's trot!
00:48A lot of people come to us when they're at a crossroads.
00:51I lost five years of my memory
00:53and I don't think they will ever come back.
00:56and they're putting their trust in us.
01:02Last spring, we installed fixed rig cameras.
01:06Additional support staff.
01:07Do you have any golden retrievers?
01:09We have 20.
01:10And a secluded meeting pen.
01:12Oh, nice.
01:13It's all in here.
01:14To see how lives could be changed forever
01:17with the perfect match.
01:19Oh my God!
01:20Oh!
01:21You've given him the zoomies.
01:23Some connections happen in a heartbeat.
01:28Hello, we're here.
01:29You trying to walk?
01:30Yeah.
01:31You trying to walk?
01:32But for some, it can take time.
01:37When people connect with a dog...
01:39You're very sexy.
01:40...it's not through looks or a type.
01:42It's through a feeling.
01:46That first time, the tip of the tail wags.
01:48You just get a little flutter of hope.
01:51I love them.
01:52You know they're a keeper.
01:53Can you do a big jump?
01:54Yes!
01:55Good girl!
01:56They're good.
01:57Isn't that delicious?
01:58I'm so excited to go play with a dog.
02:00You're just going to roll around on the floor.
02:03The married couple, Chris and Donna, dogs have been part of the picture since day one.
02:08We got on so well.
02:09Yeah.
02:10On our first day, we just laughed.
02:11I even...
02:12Oh my God!
02:13I even woofed in the car.
02:14You did.
02:15They decided to give him my best dog impression, like as a woof.
02:18We've not been in the car for maybe more than 15 minutes.
02:21Hiya!
02:22Hiya!
02:23Welcome to Woodgree.
02:24Thank you!
02:25How are we?
02:26Woof!
02:27I can't wait to go and meet a dog.
02:28You've been waiting a long time.
02:29Yeah, since we've been together, the conversation was just about to be a good one.
02:32I've been watching a good one.
02:33We've got on so well on our first day and we just laughed.
02:35I even...
02:36Oh my God!
02:37I even woofed in the car.
02:38You did?
02:39They decided to give him my best dog impression, like as a woof.
02:42We've not been in the car for maybe more than 15 minutes.
02:45Hiya!
02:46Hiya!
02:47Welcome to Woodgree.
02:48Thank you!
02:49How are we?
02:50The conversation's been, when can we get a dog?
02:52How long have you been together for?
02:54Nearly six years now.
02:55We actually went to school together.
02:57All right.
02:58We knew of each other, but we weren't really kind of like...
03:01We never really talked at school.
03:02Yeah.
03:03We've been in very different circles.
03:04Yeah, absolutely.
03:05I was more into my drama and my musical theatre.
03:08Anywhere that there's a stage, a big light, I'd be there.
03:12And I hung out in the dark corner of the school.
03:15I was so painfully shy.
03:18I knew of Donna in school and, yeah, I fancied Donna.
03:21But I don't think you would have ever noticed me.
03:24What?
03:25So you were like completely different people, weren't you?
03:27Yeah.
03:28Yeah.
03:29And then years later, we just kind of, like, came together.
03:32And then the rest is history.
03:33That's it.
03:34Yeah?
03:35Wow!
03:36And then the 16-year-old me would actually feel really lucky,
03:39because I hit the jackpot with you.
03:41Oh!
03:42Super lucky.
03:43We've just had a dog dropped off.
03:55He's very nervous.
04:00He's in a crate and he's covered in faeces.
04:04Poor little guy.
04:05Yeah, I will come and I'll get him now.
04:07The police have just dropped off an 11-month-old papillon cross called Milo.
04:17All we know about Milo is he spent most of his life in a crate.
04:22It's where he toileted, it's where he slept, it's where he ate.
04:26Just about to get him out and pick him up and just see how he copes, kind of, with being up here.
04:31This is a big day for you.
04:35It's okay, buddy.
04:37It's okay.
04:38I can get your bearings.
04:40I can feel your heart pounding.
04:44Oh, a bit scary.
04:46He's proper eyeballing something over there, aren't you?
04:49This is the first time that he will be experiencing the outside world.
04:53This is all very new.
04:54It's all very strange.
04:55I think the most important thing for Milo right now is just trying to get him settled into the
04:59kennel and familiarise with one space at a time.
05:06Nice, clean kennel for you.
05:07For your sake.
05:08Right, shut it down.
05:13A bit overwhelming, isn't it?
05:14Poor little guy, his mind's probably blown at the moment.
05:22He's got a lot to learn.
05:24We'll just take it one day at a time and at his pace.
05:27I think, for me, I've always liked, like, red-coloured dogs.
05:37Because, like...
05:39There's a theme here.
05:42I think it just needs to be the right dog, the right personality.
05:46I'm quite active, so I like hill running.
05:49Hill running?
05:50There goes the chihuahuas.
05:51Legs too short.
05:52Equally, we want a dog that could just have a bit of a chill.
05:57OK.
05:58And why is now the right time for you guys?
06:01Chris has grown up round dogs, but probably for me, I've been a little bit more reserved
06:05and, like, we need to make sure that everything's right and the house is right.
06:10But I think now is the right time.
06:12Chris's dad's encouraged us to get a dog.
06:18And as much as we would have liked to have had a dog earlier,
06:22it wouldn't have been the right time.
06:25It's been a tough couple of years, hasn't it?
06:27Yeah.
06:29We need a little bit of joy and happiness in our life.
06:33A house isn't a home without a dog.
06:36It's true, though.
06:37We are missing something.
06:38It does feel like something is missing.
06:39Yeah.
06:40Yeah.
06:41Right.
06:42We'd better get on with it, eh?
06:43Yeah.
06:45And we'll see you soon.
06:46Thanks, guys.
06:47Take care, guys.
06:48Exciting.
06:49Hello.
06:51So, it's got to have a lot of energy because Chris likes hill running.
06:56OK.
06:57Something else they like is red dogs.
06:59I know we shouldn't be guided by colour, but do we have anything...
07:06What's that Labrador's name?
07:08Are you thinking of Bear?
07:10Bear.
07:11Bear, Bear, Bear.
07:14This very handsome guy is Bear.
07:17He is a four-and-a-half-year-old fox red Labrador.
07:22Bear is like a David Beckham.
07:24Good at sports.
07:25A lot of energy.
07:26Hey, smash that.
07:27You know, in school we'd be head of the football team, very popular with the ladies.
07:31Yep.
07:32Hey.
07:33I do feel for Bear.
07:34He has come from a home where he was much loved.
07:37The whole world's been turned upside down, from being around his family members to being on his own in a kennel.
07:43Bear would love a busy family where he is the centre of attention.
07:49And once he gets that, they'll be really rewarded with a very loving, kind, intelligent fox red Labrador.
07:59I think we've found a great dog.
08:01Would you like to know his name?
08:03Yeah.
08:04His name is Bear.
08:06Bear?
08:07That's cute.
08:08That's lovely.
08:09I have hit the brief on the colour palette.
08:18He is a red Labrador.
08:23Oh, cute.
08:25Oh, wow.
08:26Nice.
08:27He's active.
08:28He's outgoing.
08:29He's really, really fun.
08:31This is so exciting.
08:32What are you thinking?
08:33I'm thinking I would love to go meet him.
08:35I'd love to go and meet him.
08:37Woo!
08:38Go and meet him.
08:39Let's go.
08:42Wow.
08:45Bear.
08:51Having done her, I feel like I can get through anything.
08:54And we have got through some really tough times.
08:57And he's ready strawberry blonde.
09:00This is so cute.
09:01So sweet.
09:02Not long before I got together with Chris,
09:07I found out that I'm a carrier of a gene called Fragile X.
09:13I'll try and give him a really great loving home.
09:16Aww.
09:19We were told that we could try naturally to conceive,
09:22but there was going to be a very high chance
09:25that we would have a child with disabilities.
09:29After you, Mrs.
09:31Thank you so much.
09:33My brother has learning disabilities
09:35and growing up with that scenario
09:37and seeing how incredibly difficult it is,
09:40and I didn't want to do that to us.
09:43I'll let you sit in the sunspot and I'll...
09:45So you don't crisp, God bless you.
09:46I'll hide in the shade.
09:47Oh, no.
09:48Two gingers in the family, I'll have to look after now.
09:50We decided that the best option for us was to go through IVF,
09:56so we don't pass that gene on to our future children.
10:05Are you excited?
10:06You're raring to go, aren't you?
10:07IVF is such a long process, and it's so... uncertain.
10:22I remember I got the call to say,
10:25we don't have any viable embryos.
10:29Your whole world just shatters in front of you.
10:32I love you.
10:40I love you too.
10:43Over the last 12 months, we've just tried to embrace life.
10:49My dad was really positive.
10:52He just said, just get a dog.
10:55Just get a dog.
10:57Life's too short to be miserable.
10:59So, now we're here.
11:03We might be extending our family a furry member.
11:11Excited to go in?
11:17Oh, my word.
11:22Hello!
11:24Hey there.
11:25Hi guys.
11:26Hi.
11:27My name is Chris, and this is the very handsome bear.
11:30Hello, bear.
11:31Cool.
11:32Right, I'll leave you in here, mate.
11:33Hello.
11:34Hello, bear.
11:35Bear.
11:36Now, he knows I've got treats, so he might be trying to follow me.
11:39Bear.
11:40Hello.
11:41Bear.
11:42Hi.
11:44Which one is it?
11:45Which one?
11:46Which one?
11:47Good boy.
11:48Good boy.
11:50Always beautiful, isn't he?
11:52Yes.
11:53No.
11:54No.
11:56I think he wants to play.
11:57Yeah.
11:58I'm going to get a toy phone.
11:59Let's try.
12:01What's in here?
12:02What's this?
12:04Shall we try the rabbit?
12:08No.
12:10No, I'm not sure about that.
12:14Bear.
12:16Bear.
12:17What's this rabbit?
12:21Nope.
12:22Rejected.
12:25Hi.
12:27Hi.
12:29No, you're just too interested.
12:33He's so excited, he's shaking.
12:35He just needs to calm down a bit.
12:38He's a bit more interested in the environment and the toys.
12:42He's like, what's next, what's next?
12:44Yeah.
12:45He's like, really, like...
12:46Switched on.
12:48Oh, hello.
12:49Hi.
12:50Hi.
12:52Shall we give him a treat?
12:53Yeah.
12:54Gentle, gentle, gentle.
12:59It's OK.
13:00It's OK.
13:01He's so excited.
13:02It's OK.
13:03Wait.
13:04He's banged his head.
13:06He's very excited.
13:07He's got a lot of energy.
13:08I know.
13:10He settles a little bit.
13:11Eh, eh, eh, eh.
13:12No, no jumping.
13:16Oh, no, her face.
13:17Do you see that?
13:18That's the first time she's not smiled.
13:20Yeah.
13:21Can we have a little tickle?
13:22No?
13:23No.
13:24No.
13:27Bear?
13:28Bear?
13:29Bear?
13:30Bear?
13:31Bear?
13:34He's got a lot of energy, hasn't he?
13:36Yeah.
13:37Very lively.
13:38Yeah.
13:39Do you think it's too hot?
13:41Maybe.
13:45Oh, no!
13:47The air's gone out the pen, hasn't it?
13:51He's an amazing dog.
13:52He's really lovely, but I just don't know if he's right for us.
13:56No.
13:59I think the time has come for me to go down and have a chat.
14:03Yeah.
14:04Yeah.
14:19Come on.
14:20Good girl.
14:23Oh, my laces are done.
14:24Eh?
14:25That's my shoe laces, I'm done.
14:26Eh?
14:27Shoe laces.
14:28Oh.
14:30Don't trip up on me.
14:31No, that's what I'm saying.
14:32Stepping out to find a new friend, Nancy, and her sister Beryl.
14:39I do notice you're wearing the same shoe.
14:41Oh, yes, cos they're comfortable.
14:44They're really comfy shoes.
14:46Yes, they are comfy.
14:48Same size as well.
14:49Same size clothes.
14:51Same size everything.
14:54Here we go, Mills.
14:55Come back.
14:57I like the cushions.
14:58Yeah, I do, don't you?
15:00Hello.
15:01Hello.
15:02How are we doing?
15:03Yeah.
15:04So, I'd seen yous two walking up and then I see we had a third...
15:08Hello.
15:09This is Millie.
15:10Beryl's dog.
15:11Hi, Millie.
15:12So, we've got Millie and...
15:14I'm Beryl.
15:15Beryl.
15:16Nancy.
15:17Nancy wants the dog.
15:18Oh, all right.
15:19So, are you here for moral support?
15:20Mm.
15:21So, yous two known each other long?
15:24All our lives.
15:25All our lives we've known each other.
15:26And how long is that?
15:2888 years.
15:2988 years?!
15:3188 years.
15:32Yeah.
15:33Are you twins?
15:34Yes, yes.
15:35Oh, my God!
15:36Yeah.
15:37Are you really close then?
15:38Yeah.
15:40What was it like growing up as identical twins?
15:43Great.
15:45It was fantastic, wasn't it, when we were younger?
15:47We were a handful, I think.
15:48Mm.
15:49We used to play trumpet from school.
15:54So, my mum sent us away to boarding school cos she couldn't keep an ounce.
16:01Do people get you mixed up?
16:03Not as much now, do they, Nance?
16:05When we were little, yeah.
16:06What about boyfriends?
16:08How did that work?
16:09It worked.
16:10We used to swap boyfriends.
16:14We only did it once or twice, you know.
16:18Only when they get a bit more amorous.
16:21And we used to get coping on,
16:23No, I'm not Nancy of Beryl, or I'm Beryl, not Nancy.
16:27We were very much alike.
16:29We're not as much alike now as we were.
16:34We're always out together.
16:35Always out and about, are we?
16:36Yeah, we are.
16:37We go out for lunch, pub lunch, and we take the dog.
16:40Wherever we go, we don't go if we can't take Millie.
16:43So, it needs, like, even out, don't it?
16:45So, you've got, you can own your dog, you can own your dog,
16:47and then you'll match.
16:48Yeah, yeah.
16:49Oh, well, listen, if you just want to go and make yourselves
16:50comfortable, someone will be down shortly.
16:52Right. Come here, Millie.
16:55These are deep seats, aren't they?
16:57Lovely.
16:58Well, that's all right, isn't it?
16:59They're rather nice round here.
17:00It is, isn't it? Posh.
17:01Hello.
17:02Hi.
17:03Come to have a chat.
17:04Hey.
17:05Because I'm sensing a vibe.
17:06Yeah.
17:07Just think.
17:08Hello.
17:09He's full of beans, but I just can't imagine him in our home, to be honest.
17:23OK.
17:24So, he's in kennels.
17:26Yeah.
17:27Yeah.
17:2824 hours.
17:29He gets toilet walks and two activities a day.
17:34Yeah.
17:35Because we can't devote all our time to one dog.
17:38Yeah.
17:39This is one of those times where he's out of his kennel and having a whale of a time.
17:44The more we stimulate him with the toys, the higher he's going to get.
17:49Yeah.
17:50So, I'm going to say, no treats, no toys.
17:52Yeah.
17:53And let's just see what he does.
17:54OK.
17:55Yeah?
17:56Yeah.
17:57Like, oh no, what are you doing?
17:58How's that fun?
17:59We're all going away.
18:01Right.
18:02We're going to be boring now.
18:06Shall I sit in the sunny one?
18:08Hi.
18:09Hello.
18:10Hello.
18:11Hiya.
18:12Hello.
18:13You're coming round.
18:14There we go.
18:15Is that nice?
18:16Hello.
18:17Good boy.
18:28When Sue said to put the toys away, I saw him change quite quickly.
18:33Hi.
18:34You could see the softer side of him, the calmer side as well.
18:39Going for walkies.
18:40That's it.
18:41Good boy.
18:42And I was like, OK, this is a really gentle, loving dog.
18:47Lovely.
18:50His big brown eyes just looked, like, straight at me.
18:54And it was like, it was, like, really looking into my soul.
18:57Hi.
18:58Hi.
18:59The next steps are to have a good think about it and make sure that we're a good match.
19:04Yeah.
19:05Yeah.
19:06Up, up, up.
19:07Good girl.
19:08Yahoo!
19:09Yay!
19:10Come on!
19:11I can't sleep!
19:12Yeah!
19:13Come on, monkey.
19:14You can do it.
19:15So Milo being in a crate for the majority of his life, it's a little bit like if we just never left our house.
19:29Come on in.
19:30Come on.
19:31Come on.
19:32Come on.
19:33You can imagine how daunting it would be to then leave your house and there's this whole world that you haven't seen.
19:38Come on.
19:39Come on.
19:40Milo gets spooked at things that you just don't expect.
19:43Little things like going through the door and things like different textured floors he really struggled with.
19:48Come on.
19:49So we've introduced him to new things really slowly.
19:51Oh, you're doing that?
19:52And he's done so incredibly well.
19:55Yay!
19:56Let's go.
19:58Going on walks he'd never done.
20:00All the flowers.
20:01Wow.
20:02Meeting dogs, that was a big thing.
20:04Now he's really confident and actually wants to go and say hi to dogs.
20:08Oh, good boy.
20:09Just taken every day in his stride.
20:11You see the duckies?
20:20So who's the dog for?
20:21It's for me, for Nancy.
20:23But it's got to get on with Millie.
20:25Yeah.
20:26Oh, Millie's got to get on with it.
20:27Yeah.
20:28We see each other every day.
20:29You know, we've always had dogs from being little.
20:32Oh, amazing.
20:33What sort of dogs have you had?
20:34Yorkshire Terriers.
20:35Hmm.
20:36Tibetan Terriers.
20:37A sheep dog we had.
20:38We've had lots of dogs.
20:39Yeah.
20:40Yeah, in our long life.
20:43Our first dog was a Yorkshire Terrier.
20:46Grandad bought it for both of us during the war.
20:50It was difficult getting toys, so he bought Beryl and me a dog.
20:55And that's her on my mum's knee.
20:58The last one I had was Darcy.
21:01Aw.
21:02But his Sunday name was Mr. Darcy.
21:04Mr. Darcy.
21:05Aw.
21:07It was a toy poodle.
21:08Very cute.
21:09Yeah, it was perfect.
21:13So what kind of dog are you looking for?
21:15Would you like a dog like Millie?
21:17No.
21:18No.
21:19No, she wouldn't want Millie.
21:20No.
21:21I don't want Millie, yes, but I'm not a Cat and Terrier fan.
21:24I like the smaller, sort of cuddly ones.
21:27Smaller cuddly ones.
21:28I don't mind anything, even, you know, like a...
21:30Mixtured.
21:31Mixtured.
21:32Do you like poodle curses?
21:33Yeah.
21:34Or Yorkie curses?
21:35Yeah.
21:36Any curses?
21:37Perfect.
21:38Well, I think we've got a good idea of what you're looking for.
21:41So sit tight and we'll try not to be too long.
21:43See you again.
21:44Yeah.
21:45Bye Millie.
21:46See you later Millie.
21:48We just met Beryl and Nancy.
21:50Aw.
21:5188-year-old twins.
21:5388.
21:54Wow!
21:55So it's got to be small.
21:56OK.
21:57She does love your, like, poodle doodles.
22:00But we don't have any that would be suitable.
22:03So, what about Alfie?
22:05Aw.
22:06Aw.
22:07Alfie!
22:10Oh, wet.
22:14This is Alfie.
22:16He is an eight-year-old pug cross shih tzu.
22:20And he is quite the character.
22:23Right, try and stay on the pavement, babe.
22:25He walks like he's drunk.
22:27He's got that kooky hairstyle.
22:31He has had to have some teeth removed.
22:33So the teeth you can see now are the two large canines,
22:36but there's actually no teeth in the middle in between them.
22:40It's a nice little slot for his tongue.
22:44Alfie came in to us due to the ill health of his owner, unfortunately.
22:49He's in the later years of his life, so he's definitely missing out on what he wants the most.
22:56That physical connection with people.
23:00Alfie is ready to settle down and live out the rest of his days in a leisurely fashion.
23:06We had to look at a few dogs and we have come to a decision on one for you.
23:17He is eight years old, so he's a nice age for you and for Millie.
23:23Once he gets to know you, he's very affectionate, he's very sociable, likes the pub.
23:32And he is a shih tzu cross called Alfie.
23:38Alfie?
23:39Yes.
23:40Well, that's cute.
23:41What's it crossed with?
23:42He is crossed with a pug.
23:44Oh.
23:46I don't like pubs.
23:48It doesn't really look like a pug.
23:50He looks more like a shih tzu, to be honest.
23:53I'm not a lover of a shih tzu.
23:57I like the puddle crosses.
24:01Yeah.
24:02Don't have any, unfortunately.
24:04But we do think, you know, personality-wise he matches certainly what you're looking for.
24:10Would you like to meet him and see how you feel?
24:13Yeah.
24:14Yeah.
24:15And you never know, he might win you over.
24:17If you're happy, I'll take Millie.
24:18And then, depending on how you get on, we can then bring her down and meet him.
24:23Mm-hm.
24:25Are you ready?
24:26Good boy!
24:31She was all...
24:33I will wait and see.
24:36I've always had a dog.
24:38I've never been without a dog apart from when I lost Darcy, so it's a year.
24:43It's not me over.
24:45It's just me at home now.
24:46The boys have all got married and gone.
24:49I don't like a quieter house.
24:52I like people.
24:54One, two, three, four...
24:56When I lost Derek, my husband, and I got Darcy.
25:02Mr. Darcy helped me a lot.
25:05Because that's somebody to care for.
25:08And he cared for me.
25:10He was just a little petal.
25:13I couldn't get on there.
25:15Where?
25:16Down there.
25:17Oh, I can't get down there.
25:18I won't get up if I get down.
25:21Looks fade, Alfie.
25:24But charm is forever, okay?
25:26I'd like something a bit different to Shih Tzu.
25:29Yes.
25:31Shih Tzu is quite nice.
25:33Don't say no before you see me.
25:43Come on the steps.
25:44You can be brave.
25:45That's it.
25:46Good boy.
25:47Okay, you ready?
25:48Oh, it's coming.
25:49It's a dog.
25:50It's here, it's here, it's here.
25:52Oh, he's cute.
25:53Hello.
25:54Hello.
25:55Are you guys all right?
25:56Oh, isn't he cute?
25:57I'm Chloe and this is Alfie.
25:59So, I will let him off, and he's going to show you what he's made of.
26:03Hello.
26:04Enjoy.
26:07Alfie.
26:09Oh, you like treats, don't you?
26:11Is he full?
26:12Oh, sorry.
26:13You've frightened him.
26:14Alfie.
26:15Alfie.
26:16Alfie.
26:17Come on, baby.
26:18Here.
26:19Come here.
26:20He's timid.
26:21See if he'll come running to me here.
26:22Alfie.
26:23Alfie?
26:24Alfie.
26:25They certainly know his name, wouldn't they, round about.
26:26Come on.
26:27Come on.
26:28I can't even stroke you.
26:30Oh, blimey.
26:31We'll sit down.
26:32He might come.
26:33I don't think you'd ever get him on a lead.
26:34If we had a number five bus to catch, we'd have to start an hour earlier.
26:39They're desperate to touch him.
26:40Yeah.
26:41I don't think they've even felt his fur yet.
26:42He just needs a bit of time.
26:43What's he doing?
26:44Busy little boy.
26:45I think his busyness, a lot of that is a stress.
26:48And the more he can do, it's going to be a thing.
26:54It's going to be an angle to be a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit.
26:57It's going to be an angle, where he's going to be frightened.
27:02It's going to be a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of time.
27:09I think his busyness, a lot of that is the stress,
27:12and the more stressed he gets, the busier they'll see him.
27:16Come on, what's he doing down there?
27:18He's talking his leg up all over the place.
27:21Eh?
27:26Darcy didn't.
27:29I think Nancy's expecting him to be like Mr Darcy,
27:33and he's just not, he's a different dog.
27:39It's very lonely without Mr Darcy.
27:44You know, you sort of get up and think, oh, where's Darcy?
27:48He's not a cuddly Dudley, are you? Eh?
27:51He's not a cuddly Dudley.
27:53I'm always checking that he's not sort of behind me.
27:57Yeah.
28:03I've got his toy that he loved.
28:05That's on the television.
28:07I've all his dishes and everything.
28:09I've kept everything of his.
28:12It's horrible without him.
28:14It's horrible.
28:15So quiet and nobody to talk to.
28:20Do you know what?
28:22I think it's time to take Millie down
28:24and see if having Millie there can maybe help the situation.
28:29What are we going to name it?
28:39Something foodie.
28:41Spaghetti hoops.
28:43You couldn't do that for a dog.
28:46Oi, spaghetti hoops.
28:48Quasso.
28:50Quasso.
28:51It doesn't sound right in a northern accent somehow.
28:55Hiya.
28:56Hiya.
28:57Welcome to Wood Green.
28:58I'm Alicia.
28:59I'm William.
29:00William.
29:01Ava.
29:02Elliot.
29:03Jules.
29:04I'm guessing you're a mum, aren't you?
29:05Yeah.
29:06So, do we all have a favourite dog?
29:07Have we got a vision?
29:08Have we got one in mind?
29:09Nothing specific.
29:10All right.
29:11So, it's not going to be like, you want a chihuahua, you want a great date.
29:15Oh, yeah.
29:16Horse.
29:17Cat, maybe?
29:19We've got two cats already.
29:20Oh, have you?
29:21Yeah.
29:22Also, we've got previous with pet knowledge.
29:24Yeah.
29:26We've had four guinea pigs, four cats, two birds, is it?
29:30Three birds.
29:31Three birds.
29:32Is that it?
29:33A leopard gecko.
29:34Oh, a leopard gecko.
29:35I remember that time we were at a party and you turned up with a bat in your hand.
29:38Yeah.
29:39You were about three years old.
29:41We've had an entourage of animals.
29:44But there's no dogs as yet.
29:47Because you never wanted one.
29:48Yeah.
29:49Did you?
29:50So, if you want to make yourself comfy, someone will be down shortly.
29:53Oh, thank you so much.
29:55You're more than welcome.
29:58How are you getting on?
29:59He's very nervous.
30:00Yeah.
30:01It's just patience with him, really it is.
30:03I'm going to pop Alfie on lead because what we're going to try is to bring Millie down
30:07and see how they get on.
30:09Good girl.
30:10This way.
30:11It's okay.
30:12Here we go, look.
30:14Millie!
30:15Your mum's in here, darling.
30:16Mummy's here.
30:17Good boy, Alfie.
30:22Good girl.
30:26He's being very good.
30:28I like a woman who plays hard to get, he says.
30:31Yeah.
30:32Is Alfie following Millie around the garden?
30:34Yeah.
30:35This is a really great sign.
30:37Are you having a rice roll?
30:38Oh, twins!
30:40Are they mirroring each other?
30:42I wasn't expecting this.
30:44He's a lot more comfortable now.
30:46Good!
30:47Good!
30:48Look at that girl.
30:51This is nice.
30:52This is very sweet.
30:54Nancy's smiling a little bit.
30:56Yeah.
30:57It's just like seeing another side to Alfie.
30:59Yeah.
31:00Yeah?
31:01Where is she?
31:02Here.
31:03Here I'm up with Alfie.
31:06Go on, Alfie.
31:08Be brave.
31:09Get closer to them.
31:11Come on.
31:21Hello, Alfie.
31:24Look at his face.
31:30It's a lovely little thing.
31:35There we are.
31:40Oh, when Lizzie told me he was a Shih Tzu pug,
31:46I was disappointed.
31:48But I just thought, oh, he's rather cute.
31:51Where do you actually go, Alfie?
31:53Eh?
31:54And he was a happy little dog.
31:55Jumping around with Millie.
31:57He's a sweetheart.
31:59And I just hoped that I could really love him.
32:07You guys have been wanting a dog for a long time.
32:09Haven't you?
32:10Mm-hmm.
32:11But I just didn't feel we had the time and the capacity
32:15to enjoy a dog and also to look after a dog.
32:19But the situation's changed.
32:22And I think it was a moment of why not?
32:25In the beginning of the year, I called the kids together for a family meeting.
32:32I just said to them that this year is going to be my Yes year.
32:38year if i could manage it financially and it wasn't illegal i would say yes to as many things
32:46i could we've been to the brit awards the mtv awards and to see beyonce the children have been
32:54asking me for a dog for a long long long time this year when they did ask me again my answer was a yes
33:02our lives have changed substantially so ava elliott and william's dad had bowel cancer and are you guys
33:14okay with me saying yeah i'm sorry so we had bowel cancer and then he was in hospital for seven months
33:21trying to get better and it just his body wouldn't didn't manage to get himself better
33:30i think it will be quite emotional to have a dog and quite healthy to have a dog mentally as well
33:36as physically you know almost part of the healing process yeah yeah definitely yes what was your
33:43dad like he was funky i'd say eccentric is an understatement really ava plays for blackpool
33:50football club and one of the mums came up to me and she said never actually seen another man in
33:55a three-piece purple velvet suit cheering on his daughter football well what sort of dog can you
34:01see fitting into your family whatever makes the kids happy i'm i'm easy ozzy yeah i think a smaller
34:08dog yeah and more sort of fluffy a dog that can run with me okay but that can also cuddle on the
34:15sofa with you okay so we'll go and have a look at the dogs you just hang tight here and we'll be back
34:21soon thank you come come come good boy yay can you do down down that's good yes
34:34there's never a dull moment with milo around he's always entertaining
34:39coming from a home where he's just stuck in a crate all day to go into a busy household
34:44wow for some dogs it can be quite overwhelming but for milo we've learned that actually he would
34:51do really well in a busy environment and in an environment with children
34:57i think he would love to play with them and he would absolutely thrive
35:04we did go through quite a few dogs and one dog really stood out to us
35:10he's called milo milo he's 11 months old and he was actually brought in by the police
35:19he's had a really sad start in life he was kept in a crate his entire life
35:24oh my word but despite having probably one of the most horrendous starts that you could have
35:30he is amazing wow and i think he'll fit into your family beautifully do you want to know what breed he
35:37is yeah he is and i can't say this without doing it in a french accent a papillon that's from them
35:45um so papillon is french for butterfly because they have is like butterflies oh my word sounds amazing
35:57she's so excited have you got any names that you have discussed it's got to be something french now
36:03oh my god i said that right before the start croissant croissant croissant
36:10would you like to go and meet him yeah yeah right i'll leave you in dance capable hands and he'll
36:17show you where to go thank you very much thank you i'm so excited oh i can't wait
36:27little butterflies sounds so cute we've had a really really tough couple of years
36:36and and and yeah i like mine john hadn't been well for a long time he was in hospital for
36:44seven months and the consultant came to us to tell us that they anticipated him to have 24 to 48
36:52hours left to live we made the decision straight away that we wanted him at home
36:58and we were blessed with another 10 days which one is it is this one here i did a massive shout out to
37:07everybody that i knew to say if you want to come and say goodbyes you know please come
37:12it was incredible there were dogs in the garden there were kids running around there were champagne
37:22corks popping and all his favorite songs
37:29john had accepted the fact that he wasn't going to live and he just wanted to enjoy every single moment
37:36if you could write your own death that is the perfect ending
37:45i just want to see him already i can't wait the weight's making me even more nervous yeah
37:53on the day he died i just climbed onto the bed with john and put my arms and my legs around him and
38:00stroked his hair and i just said i'll just lie here if you like and stroke your hair until
38:08until you're ready to fall asleep
38:13and then he breathed five times more and then he just died
38:23do you think dad would have loved this one this dog yeah

41:38as long as the kids are happy i'm happy
41:40i will love it around ours won't you
41:42and i can't see any reason why a dog would not make us happier
41:52all of them
41:52as soon as we got in the car to come home i think we're both a bit overwhelmed
42:10you need to make sure you're making the right decision for us as well as for bear
42:15we decided to take bear home and he's now max max
42:24hey buddy the first week was really tough he was struggling to calm down
42:32we worked on some training and techniques
42:36and from when we first met him he's a completely different dog
42:40so sweet-natured a very very affectionate max feels both like part of the family
42:50and the best bud yeah we do have some news don't we so we had a successful round of ivf
43:00so our family of three will become a family of four
43:05max is going to be a big brother in four months time i can already say that he's going to be very
43:16very loving of this baby and they're going to be thick as these

44:10starts running around the whole house it's so adorable the vibe in the house is so much lighter and brighter
44:19you already finished it no way he's almost like filled the space filled in that missing spot in the
44:26family yeah yeah i think my dad would have loved milo he would have dressed him up yeah a little purple
