The proposal to increase parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak will require further discussions before any decision is made, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

Speaking after the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) implementation action council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Friday (Sept 12), Fadillah said the delay was due to differing legal views between the Federal Attorney General and the state attorneys general of Sabah and Sarawak.

00:08Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Sri Fadila Youssof explained that differing legal interpretations between the Federal Attorney General and the State Attorneys General of Sabah and Sarawak must first be resolved before a policy decision can be taken.

00:35Fadila said the Election Commission would only conduct a study on the number and distribution of seats once a policy decision is in place.
00:43The proposed seat increase was one of four issues discussed at the meeting.
00:47Fadila said two matters were resolved involving scheduled waste management and the appointment of High Court judges in Sabah and Sarawak.
00:55On scheduled waste, an amendment to Article 95C of the Federal Constitution will be tabled in Parliament, likely in December, to empower Sabah and Sarawak to manage scheduled waste.
01:07He also said the Federal Constitution will be amended to require consultation with the Sabah and Sarawak governors on judicial appointments.
01:17On tourism, Fadila said the proposal to move the sector from the Federal List to the Concurrent List under the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution will be further fine-tuned by the MA63 Technical Committee, due to differing views.
01:32He added that other outstanding matters under MA63, including education and health, will continue to be deliberated by the Technical and Ministerial Working Committees for further action.
