Three men and two women from Iran have been charged in separate Magistrates' Courts in George Town with various offences, including theft, drug possession and overstaying in the country.

00:13Thirty-three-year-old Tafi Gadar pleaded not guilty to two counts of stealing 400 ringgit
00:18in cash from a tourist at a convenience store at 9.40 p.m. on August 1 and 260 U.S. dollars
00:25from another tourist at Gurney Drive at 7.45 p.m. on July 30.
00:31He faces a maximum jail term of seven years or a fine or both upon conviction.
00:37Tafi, along with his four compatriots Fazeli Payam, age 33, Dinarvan Siavash, age 28, Zahra
00:45Hassani, age 30, and Sara Giyas, age 19, also pleaded not guilty to a charge of possessing
00:52five grams of cannabis at an apartment in Batu Ferengi at 12.30 a.m. on August 3.
00:58All five face a fine not exceeding 20,000 ringgit or imprisonment for up to five years or both
01:05if found guilty.
01:06Meanwhile, Tafi, Fazeli, and Zahra also pleaded not guilty to overstaying in the country without
01:12valid reasons.
01:14They face a fine of not less than 10,000 ringgit or imprisonment of up to five years or both
01:19upon conviction.
01:21The charges were read in Persian before Magistrate Nadratun Naim Mohammad Saidi, who denied them
01:27bail and fixed October 9 for case mention.
