00:00Thailand's influential ex-Prime Minister Thakshin Shinawat began his first full day in prison after
00:13a court ruled that he had improperly served a previous jail term in hospital. Thakshin was
00:18elected Prime Minister in 2001 and again in 2005 and took himself into exile after his second term
00:25was cut short by a military coup. After returning in August 2023, he was sentenced to eight years
00:31for corruption and abuse of power. However, he never spent a night in a cell. He was whisked to
00:37a private hospital room, had his sentence reduced to one year by a royal pardon and was freed early
00:43under a release scheme for elderly prisoners. The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that the
00:49enforcement of his prison sentence was unlawful and that he had not been suffering from a critical
00:54emergency condition.
