00:30The main and arrogant Buff Bagwell was born.
00:33The bigger I made it, the more exaggerated I made it, the better it got.
00:38He just turned up the volume on his own personality.
00:41Marcus, he's really a person to sit down and talk to.
00:45Buff, the stuff, is an arrogant asshole.
00:48Wow, I look good.
00:49Working out, tanning, cars.
00:52This is it.
00:53Girls.
00:54He's entertainingly obnoxious.
00:58I love myself more than anybody I can think of.
01:04After his wealthy parents lost their fortune, Marcus turned to wrestling to recapture the lavish lifestyle of his childhood
01:11and brought his whole family along for the ride.
01:15My mom and dad worked for me.
01:17Mama's back.
01:18What's her first name?
01:19Judy.
01:20She was like my mom slash secretary.
01:23There's probably so many stories out there, it's just, blow your mind.
01:26Blow your mind.
01:27It was dysfunctional, yes.
01:29Jerry Springer would just love to go to their house and hang out.
01:31I come into the picture, WCW shuts down, and he goes off the deep end.
01:39The combination of injuries and substance abuse sent Marcus' career into a nosedive.
01:47Desperate to maintain his lifestyle, he boldly ventured into a controversial new profession.
01:53I have heard the rumor that Mark was a male whore.
01:56When gigolos happened, that hurt me to my soul.
02:02I was the best functioning addict in the world until I wasn't.
02:07I thought to myself, I'm not going to be shocked when somebody calls me and tells me Mark is past.
02:13He achieved so much so fast, and he fell just as fast.
02:17This is my mother's office, and it's full of Bagwell memories.
02:34My wrestling career, my dad's racing.
02:37Back here, it's working of the year, and up there is my tag team of the year.
02:40This is just memories that were spread out throughout decades,
02:45and she got them all into one room.
02:49She did all of this.
02:50This is all because of the way Judy Bagwell was, the organization, the drive.
03:05Where'd it go, man?
03:09Our family, we were told from a very young age that we were special.
03:13It was just known that we were going to be somebody.
03:21Hey, I'm Marcus Alexander Bagwell, a.k.a. Buff Bagwell.
03:26I'm Buff, and I'm the stuff.
03:29It's just a freak thing that he got into wrestling.
03:32Marcus was an all-county football and baseball player.
03:35He wrestled a little bit.
03:37He wasn't on the wrestling team.
03:39I'm Steve Bagwell, and I'm Marcus Bagwell's father.
03:45We had three sons.
03:47Marcus was the youngest.
03:48But Mark developed slower than they did.
03:50He was so scared he wasn't going to get big.
03:53But I kept telling him, work at it.
03:55You'll get there, you know?
03:56We tried to be like our father.
03:58You know, he was a very successful drag racer, self-made millionaire.
04:02He just had an aura about himself of power.
04:06We were always watching sports.
04:08We watched wrestling.
04:10It was definitely on our TV.
04:12But it wasn't even an inkling of doing that for a business or a career.
04:17How well-known around town are we the Bagwells?
04:20Back in the day, they were very known.
04:24They owned southeastern lumber.
04:26Everyone went to get their lumber there.
04:30This is Mark Slick Johnson from WCW and TNA Wrestling.
04:35I've been friends with Marcus Bagwell for a long time.
04:38Probably known him since I was 18, 19.
04:43I don't think there was many people you met in Marietta that did not know who the Bagwells were.
04:48My name is Tanya Bagwell, and I was Mark Bagwell's first wife.
04:53I was 18.
04:53He was 18.
04:54And we just hit it off.
04:57I would just fit like a glove.
04:59He's just a loving person.
05:01We all wanted to go over to Mark Bagwell's house.
05:03The guy had a pool room, a theater room, a batting cage, a tennis court.
05:08His dad buys him a brand-new Corvette at 15.
05:13And he's able to drive it back and forth to school.
05:15I wanted him to have the things I didn't have.
05:19And I had the money to do it, so I did.
05:21We were spoiled rotten, but we were not spoiled brats.
05:25He didn't get away with nothing.
05:26He still got in trouble.
05:28His dad wasn't going to raise the pussy.
05:30If we did anything wrong, you got your ass whipped.
05:33My father whipped me once.
05:35My mother whipped me a thousand times.
05:37And we were scared of her.
05:38She was fearsome, for sure, and fearless.
05:42If she likes you, she likes you.
05:43If she don't, she don't.
05:44There was no in-between with her.
05:46This is a woman that ran a 250-employee lumber yard.
05:51I've seen 100 truck drivers walk in and think, this lady's the boss.
05:56And within about two minutes, you know, they knew who the boss was, and they were shutting up.
06:00Well, let me say this.
06:01You don't with Judy Bagel.
06:05She'll give you the shirt off her back, but she'll knock you down with the other hand.
06:11Steve's the same way.
06:12Steve's more calm, except when he loses a poker bet.
06:15Yeah, he'd poke her over there all the time.
06:19One time, we're all up in Mark's room, and we just hear, God damn it!
06:23He lost, like, the main card bet.
06:27Goes and grabs the machine gun.
06:30In the front of his house, they have two doors.
06:32He kicks those doors open, and there's geese out in the lake in front of me.
06:35He just unloads on them.
06:38And I hear a machine gun going off.
06:41And so I'm thinking, oh, my God, somebody's robbing us.
06:44I got my .45-up bridge and put one in it.
06:46And by the time I get to the front door with my gun, it's my father's, like, Scarface.
06:50Meathers are going everywhere.
06:55So he emptied the clip, and I'm going, Dad?
07:03That's a true story.
07:07I just remember being in Mark's room, and his dad would come up, and he's like,
07:12all right, where y'all going?
07:14He said, we're going to club, and we're going here, and we're going there.
07:16And he'd reach in his pocket and break out about five or six bags of cocaine.
07:21He said, here you go, boys.
07:23Y'all have fun tonight.
07:25Stay out of trouble.
07:28He just was scared we were going to get hurt, and he knew where he was getting his from
07:32and felt better about helping us.
07:34It was crazy.
07:37Good times, though.
07:38Good times.
07:38As the Bagwell's business struggles, Judy reveals to her husband that the family's finances
07:47are in serious trouble.
07:49She had gone out and got three or four loans, $250,000 apiece.
07:54She convinced the bankers that she could pay this back, and it'll all be okay.
07:58Well, it all went kaboom.
08:00I had enough money, I thought, to live the rest of my life, you know, comfortably.
08:05I never would have dreamed it, you know, that it could happen.
08:08My father made it very clear that we were going broke, and the brothers were at their
08:13houses at this stage, so it was just me, my mom, and my dad at the house.
08:18But it was hard, hard times.
08:20I mean, they were fighting all the time, and it was just, things were getting ready to explode.
08:26You could just feel it.
08:29Basically, the argument just got worse and worse.
08:31My wife, Judy, went out the door, got in one of our vehicles, and was fixing to leave,
08:36and I followed her out, and I said, where are you going?
08:39She said, I'm leaving.
08:40I said, not in my car, you aren't.
08:42And I said, if you try to, I'll shoot the tire.
08:46I'm upstairs, and I hear my mom, Mark, Mark, help me, help me, you know?
08:51And I go running downstairs, you know?
08:54We've been going through shit.
08:55Now he's beating up mom, and I'm trying to solve that problem, and I'm just flipped as
08:59well, you know?
09:00And Mark said, Dad, back off of mom.
09:04And I saw a gun in his hand.
09:07I said, what are you doing with that gun?
09:10He said, I just want you to back off mom, you know?
09:13And I said, you'd shoot me?
09:16He said, no, sir, unless I have to.
09:18And I always kept a handgun on top of the refrigerator.
09:24He, he bolted right for the refrigerator.
09:30So as soon as he got there, we followed him into the kitchen.
09:35Now he's got a gun on me.
09:36He's like, come on, big man, come on.
09:39I go, put the gun down, man.
09:40I said, you're just going to end up killing one of us and going to prison, bro.
09:43This ain't going to do nothing, you know?
09:44Of course, I was mad at that time, and I just kept on and on.
09:49First thing I knew, he was popping caps at me.
09:53My plan was to kill my father.
09:57The first shot probably would have killed me, because it would have hit right there.
10:02But as I could see him fixing to shoot, I put my hand right there.
10:06And it took an inch and a half of this little bone right here out.
10:13You seen two scars there?
10:15And then he shot four more times.
10:17I could hear the bullet zinging by my head.
10:20It was something that I just couldn't believe was happening, you know?
10:23Because Mark and I had been so close all our lives since he was born.
10:38But he was tight with his mom, too, you know?
10:42Did you go to the hospital?
10:44Oh, yeah, yeah.
10:46Yeah, I take a bone graft off my hip and put it in here to fill this in.
10:52And I got a silver plate there that holds it all together.
10:57My mom's like, please call your dad.
10:59Please call your dad.
11:00And I'm like, Mom, I'm not calling him.
11:02You know, I don't feel bad.
11:03I'm not wrong.
11:04I got no remorse at all.
11:06And did you and Marcus end up talking it out?
11:09It was a little while before we did.
11:11Probably three or four months.
11:13He called me up.
11:14Dad calls me, and he goes, so I want you to know you're 100% right on what you did.
11:19You did nothing wrong.
11:20You're protecting your mom and yourself.
11:22I told him it was all my fault, 100%.
11:25If I'd have backed off, the whole thing wouldn't have happened, you know?
11:29We had a rough couple years, but we've been best friends ever since.
11:34With his parents no longer able to support him, Marcus moves out of the family home,
11:40marries his high school sweetheart, Tonya, and finds a whole new way to make a living.
11:45Mark was a male stripper right after high school.
11:47I wasn't ashamed of it at all.
11:49I was very happy to show my body off and make money with showing my body.
11:54We had just moved into Poplar Place Apartments, and that's how we met Missy.
11:59I was looking for an apartment north of Atlanta, and we pull up, and there's this hot guy in
12:07these, like, short shorts and a little tank top, and I was like, wherever he lives, I want
12:12to live by him.
12:13I'm Missy Hyatt, the first lady of wrestling, and I discovered Buff Bagwell.
12:20I was in WCW, was a manager for the Steiner Brothers, Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert, and then
12:26the Nasty Boys.
12:27But my main part was I was the first female to be an announcer.
12:31This is Missy Hyatt's second attempt to get a locker room interview.
12:35Marcus came up to me one day, and he's like, hey, Missy, my brother wants to be a wrestler.
12:39And I'm like, your brother?
12:40I've never seen his brother.
12:41And I'm like, why don't you become a wrestler?
12:43And I go, those guys don't make no money.
12:47And she goes, our lowest paid guy makes $100,000 a year.
12:50And I was like, what?
12:52So she found a guy named Steve the Brawler Lawler, and he trained me.
12:57I was working at a club as L Dancer, which I hated, but he couldn't work and still train
13:05and do all that in wrestling.
13:06So the deal was, if you work this short period of time, get me through, you know, this wrestling
13:11school, when I get my first contract, you'll never have to work again.
13:15She supported me to get me into the business, and the catch was, then I would take care of
13:19her from that point on.
13:21Cried every night coming home from work.
13:23I hated it.
13:24I hated it.
13:25I was going to do anything it took, and I dove into that and dedicated my life toward it,
13:30and it paid off.
13:36Training to become a professional wrestler, Marcus Bagwell dedicates himself to becoming
13:43a superstar.
13:46He started working on the indie circuit.
13:49I'm joined by the handsome stranger.
13:51And one day he was like, Missy, you've got to see one of my matches.
13:54And I watched his match, and I'm sitting there thinking, I'm like, oh my God, he is really
14:00good.
14:01This has only been like three months.
14:03And I'm like, he's got timing.
14:05He looks great.
14:06He's got charisma.
14:08I mean, I was really impressed.
14:10Well, the women indeed loved him.
14:12So, I go to Mr. Jimsy Bognut, and I said, here's a tape, and I sat there and made him
14:19watch it.
14:19And he's like, oh, Missy, you should be a scout.
14:23This boy is fab boo.
14:24And I want to introduce to everyone out there the newest rookie sensation in WCW.
14:32With a successful two-year run as a singles competitor, Marcus proves his talent to WCW and
14:38is put into a tag team with two cold Scorpio.
14:41And me being more of a high flyer with pretty boy, didn't really know how that was going
14:48to work, you know, how it was going to turn out.
14:51This is Charles Skaggs, and y'all all know me as two cold Scorpio.
14:55I was very surprised how he was able to step up his game and keep up with me and stuff,
15:01you know.
15:01They put us together, and we were tag team of the year and world champs that same year.
15:05Well, for the tag team's champions of the world.
15:09And the fans loved him.
15:11You know, the women loved him.
15:13I was madly in love with Tanya.
15:15She was a great woman, and we had a great plan.
15:18The only thing we wasn't quite ready for was for a 21-year-old man to be, you know, women
15:25throwing their self at him.
15:26I wasn't really ready.
15:27I thought I was ready for that, but I was not.
15:29And so I cheated on Tanya.
15:35Doing all that I did to just help him get in the business, and then things were supposed
15:40to be better after this, and now this happens.
15:44You know, I was hurt, extremely hurt.
15:47And, you know, I just couldn't forgive him.
15:50As his marriage to Tanya ends, Marcus is slotted into a new tag team, Stars and Stripes.
15:58First, the Chili Pears from Marietta George.
16:01Determined to reach the top at WCW, he's convinced that the key is to create the perfect body.
16:09We were living together at the time.
16:10He said, man, I work my calves.
16:12I work my calves, and they just will not grow.
16:14I said, what are you going to do about it?
16:15He said, I'm getting calf implants.
16:16I said, I'm sorry, what?
16:18He got them put in, and they looked fantastic.
16:21I mean, awesome.
16:23And then his legs started hurting.
16:26Every time he wanted to poop or piss, I had to take him to the bathroom on my back.
16:32Because he couldn't move his legs.
16:34And I'd have to put him on my back.
16:38I had to go down and sit him on the toilet and let him do his business.
16:44And then he'd wipe his ass, and then I'd go back, pick him back up,
16:48take him into the living room back in his favorite chair.
16:52This went on for weeks because he couldn't walk.
16:55Sure enough, his body's not accepting them.
17:00He had a fever.
17:01I knew he had a problem.
17:02I'd load him in the car and rushed him straight to the hospital.
17:05The doctor that came in to see him said,
17:08we've got less than 45 minutes to get those calves out.
17:11I asked him, is there any way I can keep them?
17:14And he went, yeah, we can keep them if you want to cut your legs off.
17:18And I remember thinking, hmm, cut my legs off or keep them?
17:22I swear, I remember thinking, how can I fix it where I can keep them?
17:26So he has to have them taken out.
17:28So he still has them at home in the box.
17:29Without exaggerating or sounding corny, it almost cost him my life.
17:36Even without his dream calf implants,
17:39Marcus's popularity with the female audience lands him in a new tag team
17:43that fully utilizes his good looks and muscular physique.
17:46It was not easy being that cheesy.
17:51I'm Scotty Riggs, WCW-ECW professional wrestler.
17:55One half of the American males.
17:57And we've got American males taking it too.
18:00It doesn't get any better than American males.
18:02I'm pissed off that you even brought up American males
18:25because now that song is going to be in my head until tomorrow morning.
18:27I'm Eric Bischoff, former president of World Championship Wrestling.
18:32I'm the highest ranking executive at WCW.
18:35The look is very, very important and probably even more so back in the 90s
18:40when Marcus broke in.
18:42You know, Scotty Riggs, another young, very athletic, attractive, much like Marcus.
18:47We were appealing to a female demo.
18:48We were looking to shore up what was otherwise an almost completely male-dominated audience.
18:54Girls loved it.
18:56Action!
18:56I know, I know.
18:57They even did the...
18:58The guys hated it, which made it even better for us.
19:01Who was his second wife?
19:02That was Erica.
19:04It didn't last very long.
19:06Then he had a third wife.
19:07That was Judy.
19:08Another Judy Bagwell.
19:09I called Judy Bagwell the wife and Judy Bagwell the mother.
19:12And at the beginning, it was awesome.
19:15I'm Judy Bagwell, and I'm Marcus Bagwell's third wife.
19:21I was the top.
19:22I mean, he put me on top, right?
19:24Of course, Mark always comes first.
19:28Having won multiple tag team championships, Marcus takes the leap to join one of WCW's most
19:35legendary factions.
19:38Here's the NWO!
19:40Ready or not, here we come!
19:42NWO was already pretty hot.
19:44You know, we created this heel group, but the heel group was so freaking cool that people
19:50were actually cheering them.
19:52Nash came to me and said, look, do you want to be in the NWO?
19:56And it wasn't like I had to have a meeting with Scotty Riggs over this.
20:00I mean, of course I want to be in the NWO.
20:02What is this all about?
20:04I don't know what Bagwell and Riggs is thinking about.
20:07I didn't want to be a dick and go, man, this sucks.
20:09I wanted to go to the NWO, you know, that type of thing.
20:12And so I just kind of went, all right, it's cool.
20:14Let's make it work for you, brother.
20:16And we did.
20:20I'm in the ring with all of the superstars.
20:23I mean, it does not get any better than this.
20:26I mean, it's just, I have made it, man.
20:29This is it, man.
20:30This is it.
20:31It changed my whole career, money, life, everything.
20:33When he became buff to stuff, it was like, who the fuck does this fuck think he is now?
20:38Buff was Marcus times a million.
20:41He's the type of fuck that I want to fight.
20:42That's the type of fuck that I want to fight, want to move his ass.
20:45So I think that kind of gave him more heat, but he pulled it off.
20:49I had always thought that Mark and I would eventually get back together.
20:54And when I saw the NWO, I remember saying to myself, now we're over.
21:00That's what that, that is what that says to me.
21:03Now we're over because I could see him living out that character and it engulfed him.
21:10It wasn't an every now and then thing.
21:12He was living it out.
21:14How was your mom involved in your career at that point?
21:16My mom came up with the idea, just opened up at a corporation.
21:19So we called it the Real Buff, Inc.
21:21I hired the whole family and I paid them a salary.
21:24And so out of that, it was, you know, from taking me to the airport,
21:27to making sure my house was clean, to paying my bills.
21:33One time I come home and I see Mark's mom's car is there.
21:36And I walk in his room and he's got a big old bathroom.
21:40And he's in a big garden tub, butt naked.
21:44And his mom is behind him with the skin of his dick, pulled up behind his balls.
21:51And she's shaving his balls for him.
21:54He's on all fours and goes, oh, hey, bud, what's up?
21:58Even Judy, guys, he's shaving his balls.
22:00She goes, hey, Mark, how you been doing?
22:01Is everything okay?
22:03And I'm like, I know.
22:05And I'm go, now I've seen it all.
22:07You people are sick.
22:09And I walked right out of the room.
22:12They don't care.
22:13She's going to help Mark out in any way she can.
22:16If she needs to shave his balls, then she's shaving his balls.
22:21Using his newfound stardom to pursue other avenues and entertainment,
22:25Marcus takes leading roles in a number of straight-to-video action movies.
22:34I was familiar with at least one of Marcus's movies.
22:39Marcus needed some time off to do that movie.
22:42And I had to approve that.
22:48Did you ever watch the movie?
22:49No, I just, I never did see that movie.
22:52I don't know why I missed it.
22:53He said you had a certain flair for the absurd.
22:58Bless his heart.
23:00Um, he tried.
23:02Speaking of NWO, here they come, man.
23:03Still riding high as a member of the NWO,
23:06in April of 1998, a routine match on WCW Thunder
23:11goes dangerously wrong.
23:12The finish of the match was, you know,
23:15Rick was going to hit me with a bulldog, go for the cover.
23:17But when he does, he misses me.
23:20And when he misses me with a bulldog,
23:22I hit him in his back, and my neck goes that way.
23:26And when your neck goes that way,
23:27it can't go very far.
23:28So, wham, it hit.
23:31Oh, my goodness.
23:32And when it did,
23:34it bruised my spinal cord
23:36and caused me to be paralyzed.
23:37Buck Bagwell apparently is severely hurt here.
23:40What's going through your mind at that point?
23:43Everything I'd worked for,
23:45it's over.
23:46At the peak of his wrestling career,
23:56Buff Bagwell suffers an in-ring accident
23:58that leaves him with a broken neck
23:59and an uncertain future.
24:02That's a horrible scene.
24:04I was at a friend's house,
24:05and we were watching the show,
24:06and I saw that happen,
24:08and we all were like,
24:10wait, was that part of the act?
24:11I thought, oh, my God, something's not right.
24:14I mean, it was, yeah, it was brutal.
24:17Next three and a half hours is CAT scans,
24:20MRIs, and all that.
24:23Three hours later,
24:24the doctor comes in and goes, set up.
24:25I'm like, what?
24:26And so I start trying to move a little bit
24:29and setting up,
24:30and I feel totally normal.
24:32I go, what happened?
24:34He goes, when you bruised your spinal cord
24:36and the swelling happens,
24:38your body thinks it's paralyzed,
24:39so it don't move.
24:40And then when the swelling goes down,
24:42you can move again.
24:43So I got two plates
24:45and eight screws in my neck through here.
24:48So you broke your neck?
24:49Broke my neck.
24:51His mother, I swear,
24:52she cried until I didn't think
24:54she could cry anymore, you know?
24:57I went to see him in the hospital.
24:58He looked terrible.
24:59I didn't think that he'd come back
25:01from that, honestly, but he did.
25:04Oh, look at this.
25:07It's Buff Bagwell.
25:09It was crazy, and actually,
25:12I was back on TV
25:13from breaking my neck in three months.
25:16To know that these people love me
25:18just as much as I love them,
25:21and God knows I love each
25:22and every fan out there.
25:25Listen to that.
25:25So from that three-month mark
25:28to the ten-month mark,
25:30I got back into great shape
25:31and was Scott Steiner's manager.
25:35Returning to the spotlight,
25:37Buff turns to drugs
25:38to endure the pain
25:39that comes with the wrestling lifestyle.
25:41You take, you know, two Vicodin's,
25:45two Somas,
25:46and then you come down
25:48and drink some beer,
25:49and then you take two more kinds of pills
25:52that get you up
25:53to go wrestle,
25:54and then you'll take another little combo
25:56to come back down.
25:57Muscle relaxers is what it is.
25:59It relaxes your muscles.
26:01You take too many,
26:01and you cannot control.
26:03Walking, talking, nothing.
26:06I didn't like to be around Mark
26:08because he kind of was not the Mark
26:10I grew up with, you know?
26:11I was out partying
26:13with all the other wrestlers.
26:14He was in the room
26:15with his pills having a good time.
26:17I remember being on a plane,
26:19me and Mark flying to Europe
26:20or whatever,
26:21and him being,
26:23laying beside me and sleeping,
26:24but then he'd start doing his twitches
26:27and all that.
26:27And I remember one time
26:28this stewardess would say,
26:30is he okay?
26:30Is he okay?
26:31I said, yes,
26:32it's just his medicine.
26:33It's just his medicine.
26:34Ugh.
26:35And I almost tried
26:36to make it sound like,
26:36oh, he was really injured
26:37and he tried to make up excuses.
26:39That's all I ever did.
26:40I tried to make up excuses
26:41for him to cover.
26:42It was, it was just,
26:44I didn't like seeing him like that
26:47because that's not Mark, right?
26:50Yeah.
26:53It was tough.
26:56With the success
26:57of Buff's return to WCW,
26:59I understand that is his mother.
27:01Pushing a Buff Bagwell in.
27:03A new angle is born
27:05as Marcus's mother, Judy,
27:07becomes a part of the storyline.
27:09Judy Bagwell.
27:10We made her a star.
27:12A lot of the stuff
27:13that we did with Judy and Mark,
27:14I thought it was
27:15pretty good creative, actually.
27:17She loved to perform, too.
27:18I could see where Marcus got it.
27:20Rick Steiner and my mom
27:22loved each other.
27:23They were great friends.
27:24And he called me up one day
27:25and he goes,
27:26look, man, I got this idea.
27:27You being a bad guy,
27:28we're going to bring your mom in
27:29and do the,
27:30what are you doing, son?
27:31Why are you being a bad guy
27:32to all these fans,
27:33your typical mother?
27:35And I said,
27:35I love it.
27:36Let's do it.
27:37You come to me
27:37and you say, mother,
27:39don't you ever slap me again.
27:41And I believe what you said.
27:43Yep.
27:44I enjoy working with my mom
27:47tremendously.
27:48But, you know,
27:49your mom is your mom still.
27:52So working with your family
27:53is kind of hard sometimes.
27:55She's trying to,
27:56she's doing everything she can
27:58to get away from
27:58Positively Canyon.
28:00No, I don't regret
28:01Judy getting involved.
28:02Unfortunately,
28:03we leaned on it
28:04a little bit too much
28:05and it went a little farther
28:06and a little longer
28:07than it should.
28:07But I think initially,
28:08the things that we did
28:09with Judy were really good.
28:10I couldn't find a pole
28:11that would hold
28:13that big, fat battle axe.
28:17After Judy's run
28:19comes to an end,
28:20WCW is bought
28:21by their competition,
28:22the World Wrestling Federation.
28:24As Vince McMahon
28:25only brings some WCW wrestlers
28:27onto his roster,
28:29Buff Bagwell up.
28:32Buff Bagwell makes the cut.
28:36Before making his debut,
28:38Marcus attends
28:39a training session
28:40with fellow wrestler
28:41Shane Helms,
28:42which erupts
28:43into a heated confrontation.
28:45Shane said something to me like,
28:47yeah, Bagwell happened
28:48to be on time today
28:49or something.
28:50And I go, wow.
28:51I go, you had a great day today, brother.
28:54He goes, well, I'm hurt.
28:55I go, oh, I know.
28:56Yeah.
28:56I said, you're always hurt
28:58or something.
28:59He goes, well,
29:00at least I'm not a drug addict.
29:02And I said, look, bro,
29:04we got two ways to go here.
29:06We can just drop this
29:07and let it go.
29:07I said, or I can just slap
29:09your teeth down your
29:10throat.
29:18Following an exchange
29:19of insults,
29:20Marcus Bagwell
29:21threatens fellow wrestler
29:22Shane Helms
29:23with physical violence.
29:25He goes,
29:26take your best shot.
29:28And he gets shot
29:29out of his mouth
29:29and here comes
29:30the Bagwell slap.
29:31Whap!
29:32What's the Bagwell slap?
29:34The Bagwell slap
29:36is something
29:36my father taught us.
29:40It's just a way
29:41to show
29:42instant dominance.
29:44You're able to,
29:45you know,
29:45slap somebody
29:46and just
29:47get a hold
29:48of the situation
29:49and let everybody know
29:51what's going on
29:52and who's in control.
29:54And it rolled him
29:55into the corner.
29:56So I go to walk off.
29:58Well, I didn't know it,
29:58but he had an ice bottle
30:00under his shirt,
30:01a brick,
30:02a frozen brick,
30:03and goes,
30:04whap!
30:05on the back of my head
30:09of me walking away
30:10from behind.
30:11I mean,
30:11it was like a sledgehammer.
30:15And all of a sudden,
30:16I look
30:17and there's this blood
30:18all around me.
30:20I don't tell nobody
30:21about it.
30:22I go to my own doctor.
30:23I get my own doctor
30:24to fix it.
30:25No time all.
30:27I wrestled the night
30:28with Booker
30:28with 25 staples
30:30in my head
30:30that night.
30:31I had to get
30:32a black Sharpie
30:33and cover the staples
30:34in that match.
30:36And that night,
30:37I was main event
30:37with Booker T
30:38and had a decent match,
30:40I thought.
30:41We need to go ahead
30:42every one of us.
30:43We're instantly
30:44starting to get hit
30:44with how bad
30:45our match was.
30:46And I go,
30:47what happened?
30:49What do you mean
30:49bad match?
30:50It wasn't a barn burner,
30:51but there was no mistakes.
30:53But they really just
30:54kept hammering
30:55how bad the match was.
30:56So they called me
30:57that week
30:57and they're like,
30:58hey, man,
30:58we got big plans
30:59for you on Monday.
31:01Rest up.
31:02You know,
31:02you're good to go.
31:03And I was fired
31:04the next week.
31:06I went for main event
31:07one week
31:08and was fired
31:09in seven days.
31:10Well,
31:11the match
31:12wasn't great.
31:14The fact is
31:16the crowd
31:17can't help
31:18the big...
31:18What if I had
31:19a horrible match?
31:21So what?
31:24I'm Buff Bagwell,
31:26man.
31:26I gave 11 years
31:28to WCW
31:29five-time
31:30World Tag Team
31:31Champion
31:31Rookie of the Year.
31:33I'm 31
31:34with 20 years
31:36coming at me
31:36of wonderful
31:37wrestling.
31:40Why would you
31:40get fired
31:41over a bad match?
31:44I think it was just...
31:45They were just
31:45trying to get rid of me.
31:47But see,
31:47Mark slapped him first.
31:49So if Shane
31:50would have hit him,
31:51Shane would have
31:52probably been gone.
31:52The famous
31:54Bagwell slap
31:55cost him
31:56hundreds of thousands
31:58of dollars.
32:00I was going to be
32:01one of the biggest
32:02names in pro wrestling,
32:03man, ever.
32:05And instead,
32:05I was just...
32:06I had a good run.
32:08You know,
32:08that's all.
32:09And that's hard
32:10to deal with, man,
32:11when you're 31 years old.
32:12So I dealt with it
32:13with pills and alcohol.
32:16So what was already
32:18getting really bad,
32:20it just...
32:21It got real bad.
32:22I had no...
32:23Like I said,
32:24I had no...
32:24Nobody to answer to
32:25no more.
32:26And I was depressed now.
32:28Four, three,
32:30wow!
32:31Wow!
32:32Fired from the WWF
32:33in 2001,
32:35Marcus spends
32:36the next 11 years
32:37wrestling in
32:38independent promotions.
32:39And there he is.
32:40The lock question!
32:42Battling his addictions,
32:44Marcus makes
32:44multiple attempts
32:45to get clean.
32:46But in 2012,
32:48while driving home
32:48from rehab,
32:50he passes out
32:51at the wheel.
32:51The next thing I know,
32:53I wake up
32:54and I'm driving my car.
32:57I crank my Jeep
32:58and roll it four times.
33:03So I almost killed myself
33:04with that,
33:04knocked my teeth out.
33:06But they call that
33:07a withdrawal seizure.
33:09From being clean,
33:10I had a seizure.
33:11They had to put him
33:12in a medically-induced coma
33:15because his neck
33:18was swelling.
33:19And they said,
33:20had he not had
33:21that plate that he had
33:22from his original
33:23Birkenick,
33:24he would have...
33:24he would have been dead.
33:26When I saw him
33:27in the hospital,
33:28I couldn't believe
33:29how he looked.
33:30His entire face
33:31was swollen.
33:32And of course,
33:32when his brothers
33:33went there to see him,
33:33they were devastated
33:34because, I mean,
33:36you would not
33:36have recognized him.
33:38His face was so bad.
33:41He should not be alive.
33:42I'm telling you,
33:42he should not be alive
33:43right now.
33:45How did he bounce
33:46back from that?
33:48He crawled back up
33:50pretty quickly.
33:52My teeth are knocked
33:53out of my head.
33:54I have lost 50 pounds
33:56and there's bills
33:58that still are coming in
33:59and I don't know
34:00what to do.
34:00We needed money.
34:01And so we made it
34:03make sense
34:04that I was going to be
34:05on this show
34:05called Gigalos
34:06and I was getting paid
34:08$25,000 to do it.
34:09Being a gigolo
34:10isn't always easy.
34:14Do you remember hearing
34:14about Marcus appearing
34:16on a show
34:16called Gigalos?
34:17I do.
34:18I was like,
34:19what the f***?
34:20Get the f*** out of here.
34:22How the f***
34:23he gonna get on
34:23the Gigalos
34:24and he got a dick
34:24about this being?
34:25Hey guys.
34:26What's up, man?
34:27I don't even have
34:27to say his name.
34:29Nice to meet you, man.
34:30They told him
34:31he was going to
34:31make an appearance
34:32and sort of be
34:33a mentor to the guys.
34:35So we didn't know
34:36what I was doing
34:37quite yet.
34:37But I get all
34:38the way out there
34:39and all of a sudden
34:39I see what I gotta do
34:41and I'm like,
34:42wait a second,
34:42what?
34:43Were you shitting me?
34:52Desperate for money,
34:53Marcus Bagwell
34:54agrees to appear
34:55on the reality TV show
34:57Gigalos.
34:58Come on in.
34:58But once on set
34:59it becomes clear
35:00that the show
35:01expects more
35:02from Marcus
35:02than he anticipated.
35:04Hi, Brad.
35:05Nice to meet you.
35:06He calls me
35:07the next day
35:07and he said,
35:09I kind of got
35:10some bad news.
35:12I go,
35:13what do you mean?
35:13He goes,
35:13well,
35:14it wasn't what
35:15they told me
35:16it was going to be.
35:16I did more
35:17than an appearance.
35:18And I said,
35:19what are you talking about?
35:20I couldn't choose
35:20just one.
35:22Or two or three.
35:23Exactly.
35:23He said,
35:26well,
35:27it's almost
35:29like soft porn.
35:31And I was about
35:33to die
35:33when he told me that.
35:34And when he told me
35:35what he had to do,
35:36it broke my heart.
35:38It really did
35:39because I was like,
35:40this is bad.
35:43In my scene,
35:44I do remember
35:44I had zero blood
35:47in my penis.
35:49Zero blood.
35:51I'm like,
35:52what do I do?
35:53So I just got
35:54real close up to her
35:55and acted like
35:55we were having sex.
35:57Well,
35:57when the whole thing
35:58got done shooting,
35:59I'm down at the bar
36:00in Vegas with the guy
36:01that's paying us.
36:02And I said,
36:02bro,
36:03I go,
36:03I'm so sorry.
36:04I couldn't,
36:05I couldn't have sex
36:05with the lady.
36:06He goes,
36:07you're not supposed to.
36:08And I go,
36:09what?
36:10I go,
36:10well,
36:10nobody told me,
36:11bro.
36:12It's sad
36:13what a human will do
36:15when you're in
36:16such a situation
36:17of losing your house,
36:19not having food
36:20to go in your mouth.
36:20And we were,
36:21we were broke,
36:22man.
36:23But this was a show.
36:24I didn't know
36:25it was going to be
36:26real later.
36:28At some point,
36:29you actually end up
36:30on the website
36:31Cowboys for Angels?
36:32Cowboys for Angels.
36:33It was a website
36:34that you could hire
36:37a gigolo
36:38for a date,
36:39for a weekend,
36:41for a week.
36:42And it was like
36:4210, 15,
36:4420 thousands of dollars
36:45to do this.
36:46We're trying to pay the bills
36:49and at the same time
36:50keep a marriage.
36:51And it sounds ludicrous
36:53saying it now,
36:54but when you're in it,
36:56it just all happens
36:57so fast.
36:59I hate talking about this
37:00because it's just weird,
37:01but whenever he did get
37:03called to go on a date,
37:05it turned out that
37:07this woman actually
37:08fell in love with Mark.
37:10The very first one
37:12out of the gate
37:12fell in love
37:13and it was crazy
37:15and I would live there
37:16for a week
37:17paying our bills
37:19and I'd come home
37:20for a week.
37:22He ended up
37:23seeing her
37:24without my knowledge.
37:26Judy had a job.
37:28She's got a great job
37:29she really likes
37:30and at this time,
37:31it was, I mean,
37:31she was always gone
37:32and I was gone
37:33on the weekends
37:34so we never
37:35saw each other.
37:36So the transition
37:37from Judy
37:39to this person
37:40and they had money,
37:41it was,
37:42it seemed more logical.
37:44And they,
37:46he called me
37:47at work one day,
37:48this is a really bad time,
37:51and said,
37:52um,
37:53I think I have
37:54fallen in love
37:55and I'm going to leave.
37:58Yeah.
37:58Wait, is she still
37:59in his life?
38:00No.
38:01Absolutely,
38:02I would have stayed
38:03with Judy
38:03if I had to do it over,
38:04but I don't
38:05and,
38:06and things happened
38:07and it went on.
38:10Dealing with relationship
38:11and financial problems,
38:13Marcus's drug use
38:15spirals out of control,
38:17resulting in multiple DUIs
38:18and eventually
38:19another car wreck.
38:22This last one
38:23was devastating.
38:24This last one was,
38:25you know,
38:26August of 2020.
38:28I, you know,
38:29I went through
38:30the back of a building
38:31behind the cover of the mall
38:32and just,
38:35um,
38:36you know,
38:36I wasn't there.
38:37I just completely blacked out.
38:39Went through
38:39a bus station bathroom
38:41and how I got out
38:44of not killing somebody
38:45on this one,
38:46man,
38:46it's just,
38:47I,
38:48I got no idea.
38:49I mean,
38:49but I'm very lucky
38:50that I'm not dead
38:52and,
38:52and really,
38:53honest to God,
38:53I mean this
38:54more than somebody else
38:56ain't dead.
38:56After these wrecks,
38:58you're just like,
38:58when's it gonna stop?
39:00You know?
39:00When's it,
39:01it's,
39:01it's just never ending.
39:04Already at rock bottom
39:05with his addiction,
39:07Marcus receives
39:08life-shattering news
39:09about his mother, Judy.
39:11She was suffering
39:12for a while, man.
39:13She,
39:14um,
39:14she had got dementia
39:15and just,
39:16was just,
39:17but horribly bad.
39:19I saw the most
39:19powerful woman
39:21in the world
39:22really going down
39:24in flames, bro.
39:25I mean,
39:25like,
39:25like bad.
39:26Marcus Bagwell
39:34and his family
39:35now face
39:36their biggest challenge yet
39:37as his mother, Judy,
39:39is diagnosed
39:40with Alzheimer's disease.
39:41She was at a,
39:43uh,
39:43rehabilitation place.
39:45She had,
39:46kind of,
39:46slipped into a
39:48situation
39:48where she
39:49couldn't wake up.
39:51And,
39:52I had hurt myself
39:53when I was in the hospital.
39:55I mean,
39:55she called me
39:56to see if I could
39:57get her woke up.
39:58And for over an hour,
40:00I, you know,
40:00I kept digging,
40:01trying to get her woke up.
40:03And begging her to open her eyes
40:05and hadn't talked to us.
40:07It didn't work out at all.
40:12And, uh,
40:13at some point,
40:14I got a call
40:16and said,
40:17I hate to tell you,
40:18Mr. Bagwell,
40:19but your wife
40:20died.
40:22One of the greatest women
40:23I ever knew
40:25or anybody else
40:26ever knew.
40:27I mean,
40:29everybody says
40:29their mom's the best,
40:31but
40:32my mom
40:33was the best.
40:34It was a lot
40:35of dysfunction,
40:36but they loved
40:37their kids.
40:37They really did.
40:39When Judy passed away,
40:41did that,
40:41kind of,
40:41send Marcus
40:42in a spiral
40:43or did that
40:43maybe wake him up?
40:44I think it woke him up
40:46more than anything.
40:47His, um,
40:49niece
40:49came into the picture
40:50because
40:51Mark didn't
40:52have a place to live.
40:53And so she said,
40:54you can stay here,
40:55but you're going to
40:56have to get clean.
40:58They just said,
40:58look,
40:59if you don't
40:59get sober today
41:01and you don't go today,
41:02we're,
41:03we're out of your life.
41:04And I said,
41:05let's do it.
41:06And then we brought
41:07Dallas Page in
41:08and that's how
41:09it all started.
41:10If you're going to
41:11run down this road,
41:12which you already are.
41:13Yeah, absolutely.
41:14Like,
41:14you got to live it.
41:15I do believe it.
41:16I've talked to him
41:17several times.
41:18It's just like
41:19the old Mark.
41:20I can barely see
41:21hardly any
41:22buff in there.
41:24It was a lot of Mark
41:25now,
41:26so I do believe him.
41:28I do.
41:29Can you tell us
41:29what happened
41:30with Scotty Riggs?
41:31Yeah, I can.
41:33Dark Side of the Ring
41:34called me
41:35and they said,
41:36hey man,
41:36we're going to
41:37do your story.
41:38And they told me
41:39some people
41:39they were going
41:40to reach out to.
41:41And one of them
41:41was Scotty Riggs.
41:43And I said,
41:44cool, great.
41:45I thought,
41:45you know,
41:45I'm going to call anyway.
41:46I'm going to call
41:47and just touch base with him.
41:48And he texted me back
41:50and said,
41:50I'm living in my car
41:51the last six
41:53or eight weeks.
41:53My mom got ill
41:54and passed away
41:55in 2020
41:56and went through
41:59a couple years there
42:00paying the bills,
42:01everything else,
42:02trying to keep the house,
42:04all nine yards.
42:05Ended up losing the house
42:06that I was living in
42:08and was sleeping in my car.
42:10And I was in a really
42:12depressed place,
42:13dark state,
42:14and was pretty much
42:16maybe a half a day away
42:19of putting a gun
42:20to my chest
42:20and taking my life.
42:22And Marcus called me up
42:23and just basically
42:25browbeat me
42:26to come to Atlanta.
42:29And he's like,
42:30dude,
42:31I'm Dallas' house.
42:32Get up here.
42:34I said,
42:34man,
42:34I'm content
42:35with not being there anymore.
42:38And he did not give up.
42:39I love you, man.
42:41Get up here.
42:41Get up here.
42:43And that next morning,
42:44I drove up here.
42:45And if it wasn't for him,
42:47I probably wouldn't
42:48be here today.
42:49Do you still love Marcus?
42:51I do.
42:51I'll always love.
42:52I'll always love Mark.
42:54I think he's just
42:55really genuinely
42:57this good guy.
42:58And for so long,
43:00people have,
43:01you know,
43:02misjudged him.
43:03I think that
43:05he has some good
43:06people supporting him.
43:09And he has a wonderful
43:10girl in his life now.
43:11I hope that works out
43:12for him.
43:13I want him to be happy.
43:14I truly want him
43:15to be happy.
43:17Marcus Bagwell
43:17is a lovable guy.
43:18It's why his ex-wives
43:19still love him.
43:20It's why friends
43:21still love him.
43:22It's why I still love him,
43:23despite his faults
43:24and his flaws.
43:25But at Mark's core,
43:27he's a very giving,
43:28generous, loving person.
43:30What do you think
43:30drives Marcus now?
43:31I think the same drive
43:33that made him
43:34a superstar in a year.
43:36The fortitude,
43:36the gumption,
43:37the want,
43:39you know,
43:40the smartness.
43:41He's done a lot of things
43:42in his life
43:43that I was very,
43:44very proud of.
43:44But I think
43:46getting sober
43:47and staying sober
43:48is above all of them.
43:51The future for me
43:52is sobriety
43:54and my recovery.
43:55And no doubt about it,
43:57I want to be back
43:57in the business.
43:58I want to be back
43:59in the ring.
43:59Look,
44:00if anybody can pull it off,
44:01Marcus Bagwell can.
44:03I'm rooting for you, baby.
44:05I'm rooting for you.
44:06I want to be back.
