00:00:00Really stretching the fielder and getting on with it.
00:00:03Tribute there to Giorgio Armani who passed away on first day, aged 91.
00:00:08He sponsored the Ferrari team.
00:00:10He was very close with Charles Leclerc as well,
00:00:12and a collaboration and a friendship too.
00:00:15Charles saying he was an exceptional person and an honour
00:00:18to get the chance to meet and work with him.
00:00:20And his passing very much felt here in Milan country.
00:00:26It's Ferrari country, but it's the two papayas
00:00:29who are leading that championship battle.
00:00:33Lando Norris, nothing to lose, has to go for it.
00:00:35He's ahead of his teammate, and if it finishes second and third,
00:00:38I don't suppose Oscar Piastri will be too upset by that.
00:00:41Yeah, but at the same time, Lando doesn't need to take the front corner off
00:00:46or front wing off.
00:00:48He's still very much in the championship,
00:00:50although it's become somewhat more difficult since last weekend.
00:00:53And what Lando Norris does need is a slipstream down to the first corner somehow.
00:00:58So he'll be trying to duck in whether Max comes his way
00:01:01or Lando goes Max's way.
00:01:03If he can, he'll be desperate to try not to be punching hole in the air
00:01:07for everybody on the right-hand side of the grid.
00:01:09And that is very bad news for Nico HĂŒlkenberg before we even get going.
00:01:15Down at Sauber, they're telling him to peel off into the pit lane
00:01:19to retire the car, so I would imagine a mechanical issue
00:01:23for Nico HĂŒlkenberg, who's got power at the very least.
00:01:28Have you got Jonathan Wheatley yet on the...
00:01:30Oh, man, are you serious?
00:01:34Well, Jonathan Wheatley is our quickly pit boss for the weekend.
00:01:37We'll get him on as soon as we can.
00:01:38Exactly, yeah, so we'll find out directly from the Sauber pit wall
00:01:43as to what the problem is.
00:01:45But that, my goodness, sometimes the car lets you down on the formation lap,
00:01:49but to actually get a radio call to park what appears to you
00:01:52to be a relatively healthy car, those two going in the pit lane
00:01:55are obliged to do that because they're pit lane starters.
00:01:59First time Nico HĂŒlkenberg has had a retirement in 2025.
00:02:04It's officially a did-not-start because he didn't take the lights
00:02:06to start this, and he's never had a retirement here at Monza either.
00:02:10So that leaves us 17 cars on the grid, two starting from the pit lane.
00:02:15Verstappen and Norris on the front row, Piastri and Leclerc
00:02:18behind them on row two, and it's a 476-metre charge
00:02:23down towards the first chicane, the Italian Grand Prix in 2025.
00:02:29It's lights out, and away we go.
00:02:32Verstappen then leads them away.
00:02:34Here comes Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri getting a slipstream
00:02:37behind Verstappen, and then Charles Leclerc as Norris gets
00:02:40onto the grass and manages to keep it under control.
00:02:43Into that first chicane we go, and Max Verstappen goes wide,
00:02:47goes off the runoff area, retains the lead.
00:02:50Charles Leclerc gets ahead of Oscar Piastri.
00:02:52Verstappen will have to give that place back.
00:02:54I think he'll do that in the least pain he can get away with.
00:02:57Look at the Ferrari of Leclerc right in the slipstream as well.
00:03:00So, Max, I believe that he kept or maintained position
00:03:05by going off the track.
00:03:06We'll see it again, but at the moment he is not feeling the need to yield.
00:03:11Charles Leclerc on the charge, almost went right into the back there
00:03:13of Lando Norris, but round the outside goes Oscar Piastri.
00:03:16That was bold and brave, and that's got his third place back again.
00:03:20Wow, not preserving his championship lead.
00:03:22He's going all out of pressure there to win that place back.
00:03:26Yeah, what the...
00:03:27What's this idiot doing?
00:03:29Come on.
00:03:30He's put me in the grass, and he's just got the cool.
00:03:32And the concern about that is any aerodynamic damage,
00:03:35but also grass and that in your radiator dumps.
00:03:39These cars are only cooled by passing through the air.
00:03:41Kimi Antonelli's had a bad start.
00:03:43He's down at a tenth.
00:03:45Hamilton is up to ninth.
00:03:46Tsunoda, eighth.
00:03:47Alonso, seventh.
00:03:48And Bortoleto, sixth.
00:03:49Race control's noted that incident between Verstappen and Norris.
00:03:53Verstappen's being told to give back the position.
00:03:56Where's he going to do that?
00:03:57As he crosses the line ahead then of Lando Norris.
00:04:00Piastri ahead of Charles Leclerc.
00:04:02That's where the position is then given back.
00:04:04Lando Norris now leads the Italian Grand Prix.
00:04:07Charles Leclerc is getting involved once again.
00:04:09Down the inside goes Oscar Piastri.
00:04:12Charles Leclerc, brilliant switcheroo down at that chicane.
00:04:15And I think he's going to get past Oscar Piastri.
00:04:18What a battle these two are giving us.
00:04:19Through the curva grande, the Ferrari's up to third place.
00:04:22Superb driving all around.
00:04:24Piastri taking some gambles, it must be said.
00:04:27And trying to go down the outside again.
00:04:29Max let that position go in just the right place
00:04:32so that they could squabble behind him.
00:04:34And he maintained second.
00:04:35So DRS will now be enabled.
00:04:39And the Stewart's happy.
00:04:40No further investigation for Max Verstappen.
00:04:43Strong is now down into 19th place.
00:04:46And Lando Norris is charging away.
00:04:48Piastri still on the tail.
00:04:49On Charles Leclerc.
00:04:50George Russell's on the tail of Piastri.
00:04:52Now let me clarify that.
00:04:53There's no further investigation.
00:04:55Because he's given the place back.
00:04:57Not because they think he didn't do anything wrong.
00:04:59And then Verstappen has just given the place unnecessarily.
00:05:03And Leclerc's all over the place on the break.
00:05:06Had to avoid him.
00:05:07And I think that was going into the second chicane.
00:05:10Where Oscar had to back out a little bit.
00:05:12Almost lost a bit of front wing end plate.
00:05:14And he's going to pick up a really good slipstream.
00:05:16Going down the main straight here.
00:05:17If he can hang on to the Ferrari through the Parabolica.
00:05:20Which he seems to be doing quite well.
00:05:22Out in front.
00:05:22Seven tenths a gap between Norris and Verstappen.
00:05:25And then Leclerc.
00:05:26A little bit further back.
00:05:27Under pressure from Piastri.
00:05:28Then comes Russell.
00:05:29Bortoletto runs in six.
00:05:31Then Alonso.
00:05:31Hamilton in eighth.
00:05:32He's ahead now of Tsunoda.
00:05:34Into that first corner we go.
00:05:36And there's a look up there.
00:05:37Charles Leclerc is under pressure once again.
00:05:39And survives this time.
00:05:42The championship leaders.
00:05:43Front wing and front wheels and tyres.
00:05:46Have been in perilously close company with some other cars.
00:05:50And that then is Bortoletto.
00:05:52Bortoletto steaming down towards the second chicane.
00:05:55Bortoletto having a go on George Russell.
00:05:57And Bortoletto for one moment thinking he was going to get past.
00:06:00But nothing doing.
00:06:01Russell maintains that fifth place.
00:06:04Clean ticket for Norris out front.
00:06:06He can run in clean air.
00:06:08That's why he'll be desperate to stay in front of Verstappen.
00:06:12Verstappen of course is within the one second zone.
00:06:14So gets the rear wing open.
00:06:16Gains about seven or eight kilometres per hour.
00:06:19Five miles an hour.
00:06:20The Red Bull's quick in a straight line as well.
00:06:22But the Ferrari is the quickest car in a straight line.
00:06:2525 points for a win.
00:06:2712 points for fourth.
00:06:28I said Oscar Piastri wouldn't be too bothered if he lost three points to his championship rival.
00:06:3313 points.
00:06:34That's another matter.
00:06:35He's got some work to do to maintain that gap he's got out in front of the table.
00:06:39And Verstappen was close going into Albaretto corner as it's now called Parabolica.
00:06:44And very close indeed.
00:06:45He'll get the rear wing open.
00:06:46He's got a chance on the brakes down into the first chicane.
00:06:50It's only worth about 10 kilometres an hour of extra speed.
00:06:53And the Red Bull is the DRS.
00:06:54But it's working to great effect there.
00:06:56Verstappen under braking.
00:06:57Gets it slowed down.
00:06:58Norris locks up.
00:07:00Verstappen though keeps it on the road.
00:07:02And he gets the race lead back again.
00:07:04So here on lap four, Max Verstappen who had to give a place back at the start to Lando Norris
00:07:09now gets it back and takes the lead and charges onwards towards the two Lesbo corners.
00:07:14And that's, if you saw our DRS feature early on, that's what it's all about.
00:07:19Bring cars into play.
00:07:21Now you will have seen Charles Leclerc cut across, where Max Verstappen cut across.
00:07:26But because he's then backed himself up and not had a, what they call a, lasting advantage,
00:07:31he will not take a penalty for that.
00:07:33So I mentioned Hamilton had got ahead of Tsunoda.
00:07:36He needs to give that back.
00:07:37He went to defend and went long.
00:07:40Yeah, we saw, we saw.
00:07:41Oscar sees it a different way.
00:07:43And we're on board with Oscar now towards the Iscari chicane.
00:07:46I said that Hamilton ahead of Tsunoda and the race controllers noted
00:07:50potentially Lewis Hamilton for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.
00:07:54That hasn't gone to the stewards yet.
00:07:56We've got the speedometer on Oscar Piastri here as towards 200 miles an hour.
00:08:01On that back straight we go and then hurtle into the parabolica
00:08:05and scrubbing off around about 70 miles an hour when they make their entry.
00:08:09Yeah, Pete, lateral loads there.
00:08:11You could see Piastri having to just correct the car in the turbulent air.
00:08:15Will he have a run down the inside of the Ferrari this time?
00:08:18It's only about 7 kilometers an hour of DRS advantage for the McLaren.
00:08:22That's not enough to get alongside the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.
00:08:25But further back there is Lewis Hamilton on Fernando Alonso.
00:08:30Really neat move from him.
00:08:31And he's up into seventh place after starting 10th in this race.
00:08:35This is really bringing Lewis Hamilton back into play in this Grand Prix.
00:08:39And they were right not to try something different for the sake of it.
00:08:42Here's the start.
00:08:43Everybody got away pretty well.
00:08:44And you can see Norris up front on the right-hand side got away especially well.
00:08:50Gets a little shove onto the grass.
00:08:52But that's just because they ran out of tarmac there, to be honest.
00:08:55And this is where Verstappen effectively couldn't make the corner, maintained the lead.
00:09:01Others went through there as well.
00:09:02So as has been noted, and that is why, I think quite rightly, Red Bull said give that place back.
00:09:10Yeah, so Max Verstappen having to give the place back.
00:09:13This is the battle that continued on towards that second chicane.
00:09:17I think Portoleto also went into the runoff area in the Sauber at the start.
00:09:21We can see what everything looked like from behind the Red Bull now.
00:09:24The rear wing of Max Verstappen's pole-sitting car.
00:09:27That's Lando Norris alongside him, Oskar Piastri looking to find a way through.
00:09:33You let the brakes go, mate.
00:09:35I love this.
00:09:36Yeah.
00:09:37So Max sees it that Lando kind of forced his momentum onto the gravel.
00:09:42Well, Lando and Piastri then with an even better chance on the Ferrari this time if he's laid on the brakes.
00:09:47This is going to be tight.
00:09:48This is going to be really tight.
00:09:50And Piastri is late enough on the brakes to squeeze his way through and up into third.
00:09:54Super smart from Piastri left loads of space for the Ferrari on the inside.
00:09:59So they didn't get spun around, really.
00:10:04It's two moves so far from Leclerc and vice versa, actually, for Leclerc.
00:10:08They've been top draw, to say the least.
00:10:11But, yeah.
00:10:12But the Ferrari's fundamentally straight in a fast, in a straight line.
00:10:16But if they've not got track position, then it's going to hurt them.
00:10:20That helps Piastri's championship position nicely and track position very nicely indeed.
00:10:26Certainly does.
00:10:27Who says you can't overtake at Monza?
00:10:29Who says it's impossible to overtake at the Temple of Speed?
00:10:32We've seen so many moves in these opening six laps here.
00:10:36And out in front, Max Verstappen by just over one and a half seconds at the end of lap five from Lando Norris.
00:10:41That gap now, 1.8 seconds.
00:10:44So Lando Norris didn't get pushed on the grass.
00:10:46Basically, it went from three lanes to two.
00:10:49Tarmac turned into grass.
00:10:51And Lando Norris is entirely, entirely entitled to carry Speed into the first corner.
00:10:57He made the corner.
00:10:58He made the apex.
00:10:59He didn't run into anything.
00:11:00So I don't think either driver have a proper beef there.
00:11:03Lap seven of 53 here.
00:11:06And has the Ferrari got the speed to come back?
00:11:08And Oscar Piastri again.
00:11:10I'll tell you what, the other Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton's got some speed on Gabriel Portoleto.
00:11:14That's another move from Lewis Hamilton.
00:11:15Started 10th.
00:11:16And he's now up into sixth place.
00:11:18George Russell, his former teammate, is the one ahead of that Sonoda and Hamilton incident.
00:11:23No further investigation by the stewards.
00:11:27So both drivers clean to race.
00:11:29And Verstappen then immediately into a two-second lead.
00:11:32Pulls himself out of the DRS detection zone.
00:11:36Nice, comfortable breather up front.
00:11:38Also gives Norris a little bit of fresh air for his car and his tyres.
00:11:44Certainly does.
00:11:45And I think cooling down the tyres in these early stages with a full load of fuel on board these cars
00:11:50might be the order of the day.
00:11:53And then we'll see if the drivers can keep enough performance in those tyres to make some gains,
00:11:59make some moves towards the end of a stint in what is meant to be a one-stop race.
00:12:03Leclerc still in DRS range of Oscar Piastri, but not by much.
00:12:08Lewis Hamilton's got a good race car underneath him.
00:12:10He's now just got one...
00:12:12He's also got one car, two cars between him and Leclerc, and he's moving forward nicely.
00:12:19Behind him, Bortoleto.
00:12:21Behind him, Alonso.
00:12:23And Fernando Alonso, by the way, and his teammate Lance Stroll will be investigated after this race
00:12:27for their practice starts that they did before the laps towards the grid.
00:12:32There is a box on the right-hand side you are meant to start from,
00:12:35and it could be that the Aston Martins weren't starting from there.
00:12:38So that will be investigated after the race, and we'll keep you posted as to what happens.
00:12:42And Leclerc was showing just inside DRS.
00:12:44You can see at the top of your screen now it's popped out,
00:12:46but he didn't have it open down the pit straights at the critical detection point.
00:12:49So he's now starting to come under pressure from George Russell.
00:12:53It's Charles Leclerc as Piastri just starts to edge down the road.
00:12:57Stewards are looking at Ocon and Stroll for forcing another driver off the track.
00:13:01That is being investigated.
00:13:03Ocon up into 14th from 15th on the grid,
00:13:08and Lance Stroll down in 16th currently.
00:13:11Liam Lawson on the soft tyres has made up places to 15th.
00:13:14Hadja and Gasly, who started from the pit lane, still right by the back.
00:13:17And George Russell, who started fifth in the last two races,
00:13:20still running in the top five currently,
00:13:22and they're gaining on Charles Leclerc as we watch now Isaac Hadja in the racing balls,
00:13:28making a move on Franco Colopinto.
00:13:30Well, trying to, but then realizing, as you were saying, Martin,
00:13:33it goes from three lanes into two, and there was no room to get past.
00:13:37Ted Kravitz was saying just how tight it was down there
00:13:39when he was in the Valhalla,
00:13:41riding with Fernando Alonso on Thursday for the dream ride of his life.
00:13:45Now, the Valhalla was quick down the main straight,
00:13:48but how quick is the Mercedes with George Russell?
00:13:51So he's in DRS range, and I said he's catching Charles Leclerc.
00:13:54The Ferrari is good in a straight line.
00:13:56Leclerc hasn't got DRS.
00:13:58George Russell has,
00:13:59and it's not enough to get him alongside into that braking zone.
00:14:02Yeah, they're only two or three miles an hour faster,
00:14:05the Ferraris, than the rest of the pack.
00:14:07They've trimmed their wing level and drag level down a bit,
00:14:11but it showed up there, didn't it?
00:14:12I'd imagine George getting a lot closer than that,
00:14:15than he actually was able to do so.
00:14:17Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli gaining on Yuki Tsunoda
00:14:20in the DRS range two,
00:14:23and there's a bit of a DRS train behind him
00:14:25as he accelerates Behrman and Sainz
00:14:28and Albon and Ocon and Lawson with him along the way.
00:14:32And talking of Esteban Ocon,
00:14:34he's got a five-second penalty
00:14:35for forcing another driver off the track.
00:14:39So when he comes in for his pit stop,
00:14:40he'll remain motionless for five seconds
00:14:42before they do any work on his car,
00:14:44and he'll have to serve that.
00:14:45That's going to hurt him around here.
00:14:47And so if you're wondering
00:14:50why McLaren is not dominant
00:14:52like it has been in recent times,
00:14:55their car works particularly well
00:14:56in 200 km per hour, 140 mile an hour corners,
00:15:00and there aren't any around here.
00:15:02Basically, this is all about straight line speed,
00:15:04and this is about efficiency and downforce,
00:15:07while efficiency and downforce
00:15:10in the low downforce settings
00:15:13were trimmed out, as it were.
00:15:15And the McLaren does not excel in the same way
00:15:17in those conditions.
00:15:18Here's George Russell,
00:15:19maybe another bit for fourth place,
00:15:21and he is a bit closer to Charles Leclerc
00:15:22on this occasion,
00:15:23but once more,
00:15:25he can do with a few more car lengths,
00:15:27a few less car lengths
00:15:29between himself and the Ferrari
00:15:30to try and get alongside,
00:15:32starting in the top five
00:15:33at each of the last three Italian Grand Prix.
00:15:35And George Russell trying to get back
00:15:36on the podium here,
00:15:37where he last stood in 2022.
00:15:40So the Mercedes has got
00:15:41a little bit more downforce on it,
00:15:43but remember how good George Russell was
00:15:44in qualifying on the medium compound type.
00:15:47such that he wanted them
00:15:48for the final part of qualifying as well,
00:15:50and didn't get them.
00:15:51So I think Russell's got
00:15:53a really nice set up there,
00:15:55especially for this phase of the race.
00:15:57Now, why, you're asking,
00:15:58has Esteban Ocon got a penalty?
00:16:00So into the second chicane we go,
00:16:02and there's Lance Stroll on the grass,
00:16:04and that is why.
00:16:05Not enough space was left
00:16:07for two cars to remain on the asphalt,
00:16:09and Esteban Ocon picks up the penalty
00:16:11for that.
00:16:13And Verstappen's lead now,
00:16:14over three seconds.
00:16:16The gap to him and Lando Norris,
00:16:18and then there's a further gap
00:16:19of about four seconds,
00:16:20just over,
00:16:21back to Oscar Piastri.
00:16:22Then comes Charles Leclerc,
00:16:23two seconds behind him,
00:16:24and George Russell,
00:16:25who is on the charge once more.
00:16:27Lewis Hamilton trying to gain
00:16:28on George Russell.
00:16:30Last lap was about two tenths faster
00:16:32than his former teammate.
00:16:33Then comes Portoleto,
00:16:34Alonso,
00:16:34Tsunoda,
00:16:35and Antonelli
00:16:36in the final point-scoring position.
00:16:38It sort of feels a bit like the old days,
00:16:40when Verstappen just walking away
00:16:42at the front there
00:16:43with a lot of comfortable speed.
00:16:46But George Russell right now
00:16:48is probably ruining
00:16:49the extra bit of downforce
00:16:50he's carrying on the Mercedes.
00:16:53And, what was it,
00:16:54six, seven laps
00:16:55in the last six Grand Prix
00:16:56before today.
00:16:57Max Verstappen had led.
00:16:59He's more than doubled his tally here,
00:17:01despite having to concede that lead.
00:17:03After the shenanigans
00:17:04at the first corner,
00:17:06and then pinching it back again
00:17:07with a very neat move.
00:17:09Piastri,
00:17:10who was battling away
00:17:11with Charles Leclerc
00:17:11in the early stages,
00:17:12now seems to have cleared
00:17:14the Ferrari,
00:17:15and is running that
00:17:16kind of lonely-ish race
00:17:18in third currently.
00:17:20And his teammate
00:17:21up in second,
00:17:22scoring,
00:17:22as it stands,
00:17:23three more points
00:17:25than him.
00:17:26So the top three on the grid
00:17:27are running
00:17:28one, two, three,
00:17:29as it stands.
00:17:30In fact,
00:17:30the top five are running
00:17:31one, two, three, four, five.
00:17:32And we can head down
00:17:33to the pit lane at 10.
00:17:35Yeah, so just looking down
00:17:35to the McLaren pit wall,
00:17:36they're kind of looking
00:17:37at Max Verstappen's lap times
00:17:38every lap quicker
00:17:40than Lando Norris.
00:17:41So Max building the gap,
00:17:42and there's nothing really
00:17:43McLaren can respond with.
00:17:45They're telling
00:17:45Oscar Piastri,
00:17:46Lando Norris,
00:17:46we think plan A,
00:17:48so they're just sticking
00:17:49with the first choice
00:17:50of what they're going
00:17:51to do on the stops,
00:17:52probably stretch it
00:17:53to 22,
00:17:54maybe try and undercut,
00:17:55but with a three-second gap
00:17:56and building for Verstappen,
00:17:59Verstappen's got all that
00:18:00covered, hasn't he,
00:18:00Crofton?
00:18:01He certainly has.
00:18:02It was a McLaren 2-3
00:18:03here last year,
00:18:04if you remember,
00:18:04Oscar Piastri,
00:18:05ahead of Lando Norris.
00:18:06It was the second time
00:18:07in 2024,
00:18:09but both McLarens
00:18:10have been on the podium
00:18:10at that stage
00:18:11so far 11 times
00:18:13this year in 2025.
00:18:15Another advantage
00:18:16McLaren have had
00:18:17this season
00:18:18is they look after
00:18:19their tyres a lot better,
00:18:20but this tarmac,
00:18:22this new service
00:18:23has matured quite a bit.
00:18:25It's not ripping the tyre,
00:18:26they're not graining up.
00:18:27The Pirelli have changed
00:18:28and improved the tyres
00:18:29as well.
00:18:29So it's not about degradation.
00:18:32The tyres are not
00:18:33falling apart,
00:18:34so that advantage
00:18:35of McLaren
00:18:36has been taken away too.
00:18:37We've got 19 cars
00:18:39running in this race.
00:18:40Nika Hulkenberg,
00:18:41Sandy having to retire
00:18:42before the start.
00:18:43Jonathan Wheatley,
00:18:43his team boss,
00:18:44is on the pit wall for us.
00:18:46Jonathan,
00:18:46what was the issue?
00:18:48Yeah,
00:18:48it's always sad
00:18:49to have to retire a car
00:18:50at any point in the race.
00:18:52We had a hydraulic issue,
00:18:53we don't quite understand it yet,
00:18:55but with a new power unit,
00:18:58it was probably
00:18:58the best thing to do.
00:19:00And when did that
00:19:01show itself,
00:19:02Jonathan?
00:19:03Actually,
00:19:04the final fire-up
00:19:05on the grid,
00:19:06Martin,
00:19:06so you probably
00:19:07saw a bit of activity
00:19:08around the car
00:19:09at around the
00:19:10seven-minute mark.
00:19:12Yeah,
00:19:12we did what we could
00:19:13on the grid,
00:19:14but these cars
00:19:15are incredibly complicated.
00:19:16Most of these systems
00:19:17are buried deep
00:19:18inside them,
00:19:19so unfortunately,
00:19:20yeah,
00:19:21Niko's race
00:19:22had to be ended.
00:19:24Gabriel Bortoletto
00:19:25running in the top seven.
00:19:26What's his race pace
00:19:28looking like
00:19:29and are you happy
00:19:30with it?
00:19:30Yeah,
00:19:31we're having
00:19:32all the right
00:19:32conversations
00:19:33about managing tyres,
00:19:35just settling down.
00:19:37Obviously,
00:19:37Lawson pulled the pin,
00:19:38so we're expecting
00:19:39a few other cars
00:19:40to start boxing soon.
00:19:42Yeah,
00:19:42it's going to be
00:19:42a long afternoon.
00:19:44Certainly is,
00:19:45but hopefully
00:19:45a productive one.
00:19:46Thanks ever so much,
00:19:47Jonathan.
00:19:48The rookie drivers
00:19:49are being headed
00:19:50by Gabriel Bortoletto
00:19:51on the track currently,
00:19:54and we mentioned
00:19:54Liam Lawson there.
00:19:55He did pit
00:19:56to get rid
00:19:57of those soft tyres.
00:19:58They lasted precisely
00:19:59ten laps,
00:20:00and that was that
00:20:01for the soft tyre,
00:20:02so that'll give you
00:20:03an indication
00:20:04as to whether
00:20:04anyone's going to use
00:20:05the soft tyres
00:20:06a little bit later on.
00:20:07I think they'll only use
00:20:08those if there's
00:20:08a latest safety car,
00:20:10won't they,
00:20:10because they want
00:20:11some grip on the restart,
00:20:13some medium
00:20:14and hard compound.
00:20:16We probably should have
00:20:16been a step softer here,
00:20:17shouldn't we,
00:20:18to force a two-stopper.
00:20:19Hopefully,
00:20:20they'll change that
00:20:20for next year.
00:20:21Well,
00:20:21Lewis Hamilton
00:20:22was saying that.
00:20:22We've got the C6 now,
00:20:23so let's use it.
00:20:25Pirelli,
00:20:26as they celebrate
00:20:27500 Grand Prixs,
00:20:29which came in
00:20:30at Zandvoort
00:20:30last weekend,
00:20:32may be a bit concerned
00:20:33about the top speeds
00:20:35here at Monza,
00:20:36but these tyres
00:20:38look fairly durable.
00:20:39I'm sure the C6
00:20:39will be as well.
00:20:41Looking at the
00:20:42Portoleto
00:20:43seven-tenths
00:20:44ahead of Alonso,
00:20:45Alonso's in his,
00:20:45Portoleto's management team,
00:20:47their best friend,
00:20:48I joked on the grid
00:20:49with Portoleto,
00:20:49because I was walking
00:20:51down to go to the grid,
00:20:52and two crazy blokes
00:20:55came along on scooters
00:20:56trying to run each other
00:20:57into the Ferrari motorhome.
00:21:00It was Portoleto
00:21:01and Alonso
00:21:01larking around.
00:21:03And,
00:21:03yeah,
00:21:05but that,
00:21:06there's the dynamic.
00:21:07You've got your manager,
00:21:09but you've probably
00:21:10hero-worshipped him
00:21:11all through your childhood.
00:21:13You've got your manager
00:21:13behind you.
00:21:14I love the dynamics of that.
00:21:16It's fabulous.
00:21:17Great relationship there,
00:21:18Portoleto's relationship
00:21:19with Verstappen as well,
00:21:21where they race against
00:21:22each other in the sim world.
00:21:24I think they were also
00:21:24playing Call of Duty
00:21:25earlier this week
00:21:26together on line two.
00:21:28There's a few places
00:21:29between them on the track
00:21:30and around about
00:21:3118 and a half seconds
00:21:32currently,
00:21:33but let's see how that pans out
00:21:35for the rest of the race.
00:21:36Ted, down to you.
00:21:37Martin,
00:21:38was Portoleto also saying
00:21:40all aboard
00:21:40and doing a choo-choo
00:21:42because he is very much
00:21:43heading the DRS train
00:21:45and just looking into
00:21:46the Mercedes garage,
00:21:47they're thinking about
00:21:48whether they can do anything
00:21:49with Kimi Antonelli.
00:21:50Got a bad start,
00:21:51dropped four places.
00:21:52Now P10 with Tsunoda
00:21:54as well
00:21:54and Fernando Alonso
00:21:56for that point
00:21:56and Behrman and Sainz
00:21:57and Albon
00:21:58behind the Portoleto DRS train
00:22:00and I think Mercedes
00:22:01are going to think
00:22:02maybe of an early stop
00:22:03for Antonelli,
00:22:04see what they can do
00:22:05about that.
00:22:05I'm quite impressed as well
00:22:07as to how George Russell
00:22:08is still managing
00:22:09to run as close
00:22:11to Charles Leclerc.
00:22:12I mean,
00:22:12he's dropping back
00:22:13a little bit,
00:22:14but he's been behind
00:22:15that Ferrari now
00:22:16for many,
00:22:17many laps.
00:22:18So the temperatures
00:22:19on the tyres,
00:22:21as he just moves
00:22:22to one side
00:22:23to get a bit of
00:22:23cooler air
00:22:24going through
00:22:25that Mercedes,
00:22:26the temperatures
00:22:26will soon start
00:22:28to go through the roof.
00:22:29Just imagine Ted
00:22:30handing out tickets
00:22:32for the DRS train
00:22:33in the paddock.
00:22:34He'd love that.
00:22:35Yeah.
00:22:35He'd be like
00:22:36an old inspector,
00:22:36you know,
00:22:37that they used to
00:22:37punch your tickets
00:22:38and punch a hole in it?
00:22:40There's a little
00:22:41peaked cap as well.
00:22:42All right,
00:22:42I can see that myself.
00:22:44Coming to a notebook
00:22:45near you soon.
00:22:46Out in front,
00:22:47Martin,
00:22:48who we can't see
00:22:49at the moment
00:22:50is Max Verstappen,
00:22:51which is a shame,
00:22:52really,
00:22:52because he is
00:22:53absolutely dominating
00:22:54this race
00:22:55and controlling it well.
00:22:56And the gap now
00:22:57over four seconds
00:22:58to Lando Norris.
00:22:58It's pretty consistently
00:22:59three to four tenths
00:23:01faster than Norris.
00:23:02Norris has just done
00:23:02the fastest middle sector
00:23:04of the entire Grand Prix.
00:23:06Of course,
00:23:06they're starting now
00:23:07to use up
00:23:08a little bit
00:23:09of their fuel.
00:23:10And with this low deg,
00:23:12as we like to impress
00:23:13ourselves with,
00:23:14degradation of the tyres,
00:23:17often using up fuel
00:23:19makes you go faster
00:23:20than the time you lose
00:23:22as your tyres go off.
00:23:23So that's always been
00:23:24the case here in Monza.
00:23:27If I remember back
00:23:27to the days where
00:23:28sometimes we do
00:23:2950, 60 laps,
00:23:31no, approaching 50 laps,
00:23:33sometimes pitting
00:23:34on the last lap,
00:23:35actually, doesn't it?
00:23:35To go as far as you could
00:23:36on one set of tyres
00:23:37because you don't really
00:23:39hurt them in the straights.
00:23:40This is good.
00:23:42Nice and clean.
00:23:43Stay in contention.
00:23:45Hard tyres to come
00:23:47between laps 25
00:23:49and 30 maybe,
00:23:50but we'll see
00:23:51if anyone does
00:23:52pull the pin
00:23:53and start to pit
00:23:54from further behind.
00:23:56The trouble with
00:23:57trying to make
00:23:58an undercut work
00:23:59pitting ahead
00:24:00of the driver
00:24:01in front
00:24:01and hoping
00:24:02that on fresh tyres
00:24:03you've got the pace
00:24:04to get past them
00:24:05when they finally
00:24:05make a pit stop
00:24:06is that when you go
00:24:07from the medium
00:24:08onto the hard tyre
00:24:09here,
00:24:10the hard tyre
00:24:10takes a little bit
00:24:11longer to warm up
00:24:12and you can't just
00:24:12go and push
00:24:13straight away.
00:24:14London Norris saying
00:24:15my front left
00:24:17is the limiting factor
00:24:18for going faster.
00:24:20It's a clockwise circuit
00:24:21and most of the key corners
00:24:23are right-handers
00:24:24so that is why
00:24:26your front left
00:24:27gets a little bit
00:24:28of stress.
00:24:29What I think
00:24:30is going to be
00:24:30very interesting
00:24:31is when they go
00:24:32on to the hard compound tyres
00:24:34just over half distance
00:24:35probably or around
00:24:36half distance
00:24:37as to whether
00:24:38that moves
00:24:40the dynamics
00:24:41of this Grand Prix
00:24:42whether it changes
00:24:43who's got the advantage.
00:24:46Which it often
00:24:46can do.
00:24:48Verstappen sets
00:24:48a new fastest lap
00:24:49of this race.
00:24:51Lando Norris
00:24:52crosses the line
00:24:524.3 seconds
00:24:54behind him.
00:24:55George Russell
00:24:56has now
00:24:56just detached himself
00:24:59from that
00:25:00magic one seconds.
00:25:01He's not in DRS range
00:25:03of Charles Leclerc
00:25:04and I wonder
00:25:05if that then helps
00:25:06Lewis Hamilton
00:25:06a little bit.
00:25:07lap previous
00:25:08to this
00:25:09lap 15
00:25:10he was 3 tenths
00:25:11quicker than Russell
00:25:11now he's a tenth
00:25:12quicker than Russell
00:25:13does that help
00:25:14Lewis Hamilton
00:25:14I wonder
00:25:15just to close
00:25:16that gap
00:25:16a little bit faster
00:25:18now that Russell
00:25:18is not getting
00:25:19the DRS benefit
00:25:20behind Charles Leclerc.
00:25:21We'll see.
00:25:22Karun at Sky Race Control.
00:25:24Good afternoon Crofty
00:25:25just listening in
00:25:26to some of the radio
00:25:27here Verstappen
00:25:28is completely in control
00:25:30all the feedback
00:25:30he's giving is
00:25:31cars good
00:25:32pace is good
00:25:33tyres are good
00:25:34so he is
00:25:35he's checked out
00:25:364.5 seconds
00:25:37with Deja Vu
00:25:372023
00:25:38now just looking
00:25:39at what Russell
00:25:40can do
00:25:41so we think
00:25:41that the undercar
00:25:42here is not
00:25:43as powerful
00:25:44as in Holland
00:25:45or in Hungary
00:25:46before that
00:25:47he needs to be
00:25:48within about a second
00:25:49now there's a gap
00:25:50as Leclerc has gone
00:25:51a little bit of the gravel
00:25:52at the second Lesmo
00:25:53there's a gap
00:25:54it's about 25 seconds
00:25:55of pit stop
00:25:56there's a small gap
00:25:58right at the back
00:25:59of the field
00:25:59between Lawson
00:26:00and Gasly
00:26:01where Russell
00:26:02can slot into
00:26:03but then he'll
00:26:04quickly get caught
00:26:05with people
00:26:05the problem
00:26:06for any of the
00:26:07top runners
00:26:07is that the field
00:26:09is still quite
00:26:09tightly punched
00:26:10and you can't
00:26:12pit too early
00:26:12or you'll get
00:26:13stuck in traffic
00:26:14and you don't
00:26:14want to get stuck
00:26:15Martin behind
00:26:16the likes of
00:26:16Alex Albon
00:26:17for instance
00:26:18on the hard tyre
00:26:19leading a gaggle
00:26:20of cars
00:26:20on the hard tyre
00:26:21behind him
00:26:22who are going to
00:26:23go that little bit
00:26:24longer
00:26:24absolutely
00:26:25so they're
00:26:26watching that
00:26:27a long way
00:26:28behind the message
00:26:28from Christian
00:26:29Horner here
00:26:29actually saying
00:26:30this was our
00:26:31worst race
00:26:31last year
00:26:32with the wrong
00:26:33downforce level
00:26:33and how hard
00:26:35the team
00:26:35have worked
00:26:36on that package
00:26:37and done a great
00:26:38job
00:26:38because they've
00:26:39turned it around
00:26:4038 seconds
00:26:41I think Max
00:26:42Verstappen
00:26:42finished behind
00:26:43the race leader
00:26:43and race winner
00:26:44Charles Leclerc
00:26:45is down the inside
00:26:46goes Kimi Antonelli
00:26:48on Yuki Tsunoda
00:26:49and he's got
00:26:50one place back
00:26:51at the four
00:26:52that he lost
00:26:52at the start
00:26:53there
00:26:53neat little move
00:26:54there
00:26:54from the man
00:26:55from Bologna
00:26:55he moves up
00:26:56into ninth
00:26:57it looks like
00:26:59Carlos Sainz
00:26:59has been down
00:27:00running through
00:27:02the runoff area
00:27:02without going
00:27:03around the
00:27:04necessary bollard
00:27:05and following
00:27:06the yellow lines
00:27:07he's been reported
00:27:08for failing
00:27:10to follow
00:27:11race directors
00:27:12instructions
00:27:13on the runoff
00:27:13zone
00:27:14yeah
00:27:14there's a
00:27:16specific line
00:27:17you have to
00:27:17take
00:27:18and even if
00:27:18you can't
00:27:19get to the
00:27:20right of the
00:27:20yellow line
00:27:21at the start
00:27:22of that
00:27:22particular corner
00:27:23you still need
00:27:24to come on
00:27:25later into
00:27:26the runoff
00:27:26area
00:27:26let's see
00:27:27what happened
00:27:27lock up
00:27:28there
00:27:28and he's
00:27:29going to
00:27:29come on
00:27:30before
00:27:30the yellow
00:27:31line
00:27:31you can
00:27:31see it
00:27:32just on
00:27:32the right
00:27:32hand side
00:27:32of your
00:27:33screen
00:27:33yeah
00:27:33that'll
00:27:34take some
00:27:34defending
00:27:34Carlos
00:27:35take a lot
00:27:37of defending
00:27:37unfortunately
00:27:38so and there's
00:27:40a reason for
00:27:41it's so that
00:27:41the cars feed
00:27:42back in
00:27:43in a
00:27:43controlled way
00:27:44at a
00:27:45controlled
00:27:45angle
00:27:46Lando there
00:27:47playing
00:27:49a risky
00:27:50game
00:27:51because that
00:27:52can damage
00:27:52the underneath
00:27:53of the car
00:27:53so it brings
00:27:54gravel onto
00:27:54the track
00:27:55the gravel
00:27:56can damage
00:27:56the aero parts
00:27:57and it can
00:27:58pepper those
00:27:59as well
00:27:59that's for all
00:28:00the cars of course
00:28:01who go through
00:28:01it
00:28:01Ollie Behrman's
00:28:02coming into the
00:28:03pits to try the
00:28:04undercut from
00:28:0511th it was
00:28:06mentioned to us
00:28:07by Ferrari
00:28:08actually just watch
00:28:08out for the
00:28:09gravel if enough
00:28:10of it comes onto
00:28:11the circuit that
00:28:12might necessitate a
00:28:13virtual safety car
00:28:14or a safety car
00:28:15for the marshals to
00:28:16come and sweep it
00:28:17so Behrman comes in
00:28:19to the pits and he
00:28:20should I would
00:28:21imagine get out
00:28:22ahead of Liam
00:28:24Lawson and they
00:28:25decided down at
00:28:26Haas that that's
00:28:26the gap that
00:28:27they're trying to
00:28:28put him into but
00:28:29that's not quite
00:28:30happened Lawson's
00:28:30actually gone
00:28:31through you you
00:28:32do lose a lot of
00:28:33time there 25
00:28:34seconds in your
00:28:36pit stop because
00:28:37of the speeds that
00:28:38the cars are doing
00:28:39down the straight
00:28:39while you're stuck
00:28:41and controlled at
00:28:4180 kilometers an
00:28:43hour
00:28:43Max just walking
00:28:45it in this place
00:28:45gravel now
00:28:46yeah
00:28:47this is solid Max
00:28:49keep building the
00:28:50advantage we know
00:28:52how things can
00:28:53change so keep
00:28:53he can have that
00:28:54advantage distance
00:28:55yeah it solid I
00:28:58think is the
00:28:58understatement from
00:28:59GP Giampiero
00:29:01Lambias who like to
00:29:02play things down at
00:29:03the best of times
00:29:03it's it is a
00:29:05masterclass from
00:29:05Max currently
00:29:06well what can
00:29:07change is they
00:29:07go into the
00:29:08hard compound
00:29:08tires and also a
00:29:10safety car something
00:29:11like that or a
00:29:12virtual safety car
00:29:13so and also this
00:29:16kind of lead he's
00:29:16got now
00:29:17they're gonna make
00:29:18a pit stop at
00:29:18Red Bull and it
00:29:19might be a last
00:29:20minute call this
00:29:21for Yuki Tsunoda
00:29:22and they dropped
00:29:23the tires as they
00:29:24were trying to get
00:29:25them out of the
00:29:26racks no harm done
00:29:27they'll be ready for
00:29:28him when he comes in
00:29:29so Behrman's pit stop
00:29:30has now triggered
00:29:31Yuki Tsunoda's as
00:29:32well Alonso getting
00:29:33closer to Gabriel
00:29:35Bortoletto and
00:29:35locking up in the
00:29:36process
00:29:37yeah and Avalanche
00:29:38Pirelli's there all
00:29:39of a sudden but I
00:29:41was saying out front
00:29:42Verstappen with that
00:29:42kind of with a 5.6
00:29:44second lead they can
00:29:46wait they can afford
00:29:47to come in the
00:29:48following lap of
00:29:49Norris and Piastri
00:29:51it buys them time
00:29:53and a comfort zone
00:29:55that's what as we
00:29:57see him doing so
00:29:58many times haven't we
00:29:59over the last few
00:29:59years
00:30:00so this is why Red Bull
00:30:01brought Yuki Tsunoda in
00:30:02and why they responded
00:30:03straight away and why
00:30:05the undercut it can
00:30:07work here but not on
00:30:08this case and not on
00:30:09this occasion Tsunoda
00:30:10comes out from this
00:30:11pit stop still ahead of
00:30:13Behrman in the house
00:30:14but Behrman with his
00:30:15tires slightly more
00:30:17warmed up than Tsunoda
00:30:17is going to challenge
00:30:18this one going to the
00:30:20chicane and by the
00:30:21time under braking
00:30:22they get to the
00:30:23chicane Ollie Behrman
00:30:24has made his way past
00:30:26Yuki Tsunoda very
00:30:27neat little move indeed
00:30:28for the man who won
00:30:29the Monza F2 feature
00:30:31race in 2023 and who
00:30:33won the sprint race
00:30:34here this time last
00:30:34year
00:30:35you've had to see the
00:30:36gravel yeah
00:30:37Meister I think
00:30:38yeah and you could
00:30:40hear the bottom of the
00:30:41car couldn't you
00:30:42crunching down the
00:30:44serato oh you know
00:30:45you get to see the
00:30:45sparks
00:30:46Alan made such a
00:30:47mess of his
00:30:48aerodynamics
00:30:48Portoletto's pitted
00:30:50and Alonso's pitted
00:30:51too just keep an eye
00:30:52on that gravel through
00:30:53this because that
00:30:55might pose something
00:30:56of a problem if
00:30:58anyone else goes off
00:30:59and we've had quite a
00:31:00few going off this
00:31:01weekend right neat
00:31:02pit stop from Aston
00:31:03Martin 3.2 seconds
00:31:05looks a bit slower
00:31:06that does look a bit
00:31:06slower and as they
00:31:08come out they look to
00:31:09be side by side let's
00:31:10have a look at the
00:31:10cars as they emerge
00:31:12into the sunshine and
00:31:13Alonso has got ahead
00:31:14at the pit stop of
00:31:16Gabriel Portoletto
00:31:17and it was a better
00:31:18stop from the Aston
00:31:19Martin crew as here
00:31:21comes the racing bulls
00:31:22just to compound
00:31:23Portoletto's misery
00:31:25getting in between
00:31:26this particular fight
00:31:28so the tyres come out
00:31:29of the blankets at a
00:31:30maximum of 70 degrees
00:31:32C they need to be
00:31:33around 100 that's why
00:31:35you take a little bit
00:31:36of time these days to
00:31:37a few corners to bring
00:31:39them up to where you
00:31:40need them which is why
00:31:41we saw Berman slicing
00:31:43past Tsunoda as well
00:31:44yeah now Lawson pitted
00:31:4511 laps ago to put his
00:31:48hard compound tyres on
00:31:49and he's now got
00:31:50himself right in the
00:31:51thick of what was a
00:31:52battle for 7th and 8th
00:31:54place so into the pit lane
00:31:56we go and Fernando Alonso
00:31:57really aggressively
00:31:59attacking that
00:31:59the wise old head he took
00:32:0110-15 metres out of him
00:32:03didn't he by being less
00:32:05cautious as long as he
00:32:07didn't break the speed
00:32:07limit there so that put
00:32:09him in play and that
00:32:11made the difference
00:32:12honestly it made the
00:32:13difference that they had
00:32:14to hold Portoletto there
00:32:16so Portoletto might have
00:32:18slammed Alonso into the
00:32:19Ferrari motorhome on a
00:32:21scooter but he's just had
00:32:22a bit of payback
00:32:23certainly has and this is
00:32:25Max Verstappen and to
00:32:27remind you he is our race
00:32:28leader look the gravel's
00:32:29gone off the racing line
00:32:30that's good that's what
00:32:31we want to see there
00:32:32Verstappen nearly six
00:32:34seconds clear of Lando
00:32:36Norris what a dream
00:32:37feeling this must be for
00:32:40Max Verstappen who of
00:32:41course hasn't stood on
00:32:43top of the podium this
00:32:44season since Imola that's
00:32:46a win there and of course
00:32:48in Japan in Suzuka where
00:32:49he won from pole as you
00:32:51were looking at that
00:32:51data Croft here Max was
00:32:52really wringing the neck of
00:32:54that red bull through the
00:32:56Ascara she can he is
00:32:57pushing like crazy Ted what
00:33:00can you tell us got to
00:33:01give some credit to the
00:33:02Aston Martin mechanics as
00:33:03well as that Martin and
00:33:04Crofty they did their bit
00:33:06they were giving it a go by
00:33:07following Portoletto in they
00:33:09knew that it was a fight
00:33:10between the mechanics and
00:33:12the Aston Martin it wasn't
00:33:13a two second stop wasn't a
00:33:141.9 it was actually more
00:33:16like a mid two to high two
00:33:18second but they did it and
00:33:19lots of fist bumping and
00:33:21congratulations amongst them
00:33:22they made it happen as much
00:33:23as the south mechanics having
00:33:25to delay Portoletto getting
00:33:26out of that bit box that is
00:33:28Portoletto Lawson and behind
00:33:30him Oli Behrman behind Oli
00:33:32Behrman in this race currently
00:33:34is Yuki Tsunoda and he is the
00:33:35last of the 19 runners still
00:33:37going Karun to you yeah just a
00:33:40line on on Liam Lawson
00:33:41Crofty is in the middle of that
00:33:42obviously he's the only car
00:33:43that started on the soft tire
00:33:45so Portoletto overtaking him
00:33:47that is for a net position when
00:33:49they all finish their pit stops
00:33:50this group of cars we're looking
00:33:51at they're the first of the
00:33:53cars who have pitted and Alonso
00:33:56and Portoletto should cycle back
00:33:58into the point so for Oli Behrman
00:34:00he needs to try and get past
00:34:02Lawson here his tires are nine
00:34:05laps fresher thanks ever so much
00:34:07indeed Karun at Sky Race
00:34:08control we're on lap 23 of 53
00:34:12here at Monza
00:34:13Oli Behrman getting very close
00:34:15to Liam Lawson under braking
00:34:17into the chicane
00:34:19desperate I'm sure to try and
00:34:22get past I mentioned Oli
00:34:23Behrman's credentials here at
00:34:26Monza Liam Lawson no slouch
00:34:29around this track he was on pole
00:34:30in F3 in 2020 he was in the
00:34:32front row in 2022 and he got
00:34:35his first F3 sprint podium
00:34:37here in 2019 as well
00:34:40through to the Lesmo corners
00:34:45they come the two right handers
00:34:48the second Lesmo it's been a
00:34:50tricky exit it must be said
00:34:51right Gabriel Portoletto on board
00:34:53with him down towards that first
00:34:56chicane lock up from the racing
00:34:58bull that's just piqued his
00:35:00attention that a touch
00:35:01just you can hear the wheel spin as
00:35:05they get their foot flat to the floor
00:35:07and not spinning quite so much
00:35:09Portoletto good momentum from him
00:35:11and he manages to get past the
00:35:13racing bulls yeah his front wing must
00:35:15have been perilously close to as
00:35:18Antonelli takes to the runoff area
00:35:21after a lockup as soon as your wheels
00:35:24stop rotating you've got you've
00:35:27halved the grip you cannot slow down
00:35:29and you're damned if you do break
00:35:31harder and damned if you don't
00:35:32correct you just can't make the
00:35:34corner
00:35:35Max Verstappen has had to put in an
00:35:39overtake to retake the lead of this
00:35:42Italian Grand Prix we had all the
00:35:43hustle and bustle and the kerfuffles
00:35:46from the opening few laps but it's
00:35:48settled down now out in front 6.3
00:35:51seconds the gap between Verstappen and
00:35:53Norris that watching the gap between
00:35:55Russell and Hamilton continue to close
00:35:57down by two tenths on the previous
00:36:00lap another two tenths on this lap
00:36:02Lewis taking his time to get a bit
00:36:05closer to George Russell but he's got
00:36:07that gap down from about 2.7 seconds
00:36:09in the last few laps as we cross and go
00:36:12on board to Alex Albon running in the
00:36:15top nine on the hard compound tyre
00:36:16behind his teammate Carlos Sainz who is
00:36:19under investigation or has been noted I
00:36:22should say
00:36:23I think there's more to win by you guys
00:36:30I don't agree please
00:36:32so what's that instruction all about
00:36:37to turn four keep the racing line so not
00:36:40this one oh Fernando Alonso is that a
00:36:43right rear puncture it looks a bit it
00:36:45it does look to be a bit low down on
00:36:48that right rear meanwhile here comes
00:36:50Alex Albon as I say on the hard tyre
00:36:53compared to Sainz on the medium tyre and I
00:36:55wonder if this is Alex Albon being
00:36:57instructed by the team that they're
00:36:59going to swap places here Carlos Sainz may
00:37:01be not overly happy about it Sainz being
00:37:03told do not defend into what was there
00:37:05turn four keep to the racing line do not
00:37:08defend against Albon is what they were
00:37:10telling him which is pretty much same
00:37:12thing as you're saying Crofty thank you
00:37:14that does look like a puncture doesn't it
00:37:15for Fernando Alonso just look at the
00:37:18balance of the car as he comes in
00:37:20suspension failure possibly what is it
00:37:24going on there suspension failure this is
00:37:27unbelievable man oh it's so so
00:37:29disappointing Ted Kravitz he came into this
00:37:32weekend not expected much and he was
00:37:33having a really good race battle that he
00:37:36was winning with Gabriel Bortoleto yeah it's
00:37:39the front right it's the front right the
00:37:40mechanics are pointing at it Fernando so
00:37:43disappointed and wow you can go from
00:37:45elation for winning that position to
00:37:47Bortoleto to complete despair Alonso
00:37:49can't wait to get out of the well
00:37:51that's that's possibly yeah that's well
00:37:53definitely it happening but yeah Alonso
00:37:56lifting the headrest out himself because
00:37:58he's just so annoyed he can't wait to
00:38:00get out of the car it's quite his
00:38:02gutting so Ted he was quite high up on
00:38:04the exit curve of Ascari and the shock
00:38:07loading the frequency it just it just
00:38:09broke the suspension scored in six of
00:38:11the last seven Grand Prix Fernando
00:38:13Alonso and sadly for him that's the
00:38:15second retirement here at Monza in the
00:38:17last five years Carlos Sainz is now
00:38:21under investigation for failing to
00:38:24follow what the race director said in
00:38:26his race notes i go off the track you've
00:38:27got to come on at a certain point and he
00:38:29didn't do that at the second chicane so
00:38:32we'll see if there's a penalty coming
00:38:34Carlos Sainz's way and his teammate has
00:38:36scammed for past him and already broken a DRS
00:38:39Sainz currently scoring a couple of points
00:38:43Oli Behrmann down in 16th his nearest
00:38:47rival to the championship but Behrmann has
00:38:49already pitted Sainz has and Alcon still
00:38:51carrying a five second penalty there isn't he
00:38:53hasn't served yet in 10th that's absolutely
00:38:56right so he's got a penalty to serve Sainz is
00:38:58under investigation and nobody's really
00:39:01investigating Max Verstappen much in this
00:39:03race because he is so far out in front and
00:39:05Lando Norris was
00:39:07shouldering plan A plus 15 do you think that's
00:39:11possible I think so
00:39:13oh yes wow so can you go 15 laps longer on
00:39:18your first stint please so let me explain
00:39:20why that's happening those have come in and
00:39:22put brand new hard compound tyres on and
00:39:24not going particularly well it looks like
00:39:27sticking with a medium tyre and doing a very
00:39:30very long stint from the information they
00:39:33can gather from those at the back that
00:39:35have pitted and that's why they're all
00:39:38they're going to all extend and hang on to
00:39:40the used mediums they seem a better tyre
00:39:42right interesting that that can have a
00:39:44bearing on how quick this race is run I
00:39:47don't know if you've got your stopwatches
00:39:49handy at home and if you've had your
00:39:51stopwatches on from the start but we
00:39:54passed half-race distance in 36 minutes
00:40:01and that's crucial because we're on pace to
00:40:05break the record here for the fastest race
00:40:08in Formula One history Michael Schumacher
00:40:11winning here in 2003 he did it in an hour
00:40:1414 minutes 19.838 seconds Charles Leclerc last
00:40:19year was 21 seconds slower when he won that
00:40:22and if they keep up this pace then we could
00:40:26as George Russell pits have the fastest ever
00:40:28Formula One Grand Prix in World Championship
00:40:31history so we'll see what happens there as
00:40:33George Russell comes in to make his pit stop
00:40:36hard tyres going on sure that was the
00:40:39quickest stop we've seen from Mercedes yeah
00:40:402.9 seconds so he lost about seven
00:40:43tenths of a second while he was stationary
00:40:46and he's going to come out now behind the
00:40:49racing balls isn't he of Isaac Hadja
00:40:53Hadja running down in 11th
00:40:56so Corinne Chandler let's head to you Sky Race Control
00:40:59thanks Dr. just reflecting on that message there to Oscar Piastri
00:41:04this morning Andrea Stella made a comment that the soft tyre is holding up quite well and could be an option in the race
00:41:11what are your thoughts about continuing until we can put a soft
00:41:16yeah I mean we may as well continue for now
00:41:18yeah
00:41:20that's exactly what I was going to say after the
00:41:23Andrea Stella told me this morning the soft is a raceable tyre and I think that's what they're trying to do extend the medium and put the soft on at the end
00:41:30at the end
00:41:31as Liam Lawson goes battling with Yuki Tsunoda and his contact between the two cars once twice three times four times and it all ends up getting very scrappy as he moves past
00:41:42second race in a row that Liam Lawson's made contact with another car I'd rather get the feeling that's going to be looked at meanwhile as a reprimand for Carlos Sainz for rejoining the track where he shouldn't have done
00:41:54Yuki Tsunoda's now got that place back I assume it's Alan Pumain the team principal down at Racing Bulls Senor Liam I think you might need to give that back yourself before the stewards make us
00:42:05Antonelli is now pitting for Mercedes
00:42:08that's an interesting uh a reprimand
00:42:12so towards the end of the race it might be worth just banzaiing through that zone runoff zone gaining two or three seconds
00:42:20that's a lasting advantage of course and have a reprimand for it
00:42:24right is Kimi Antonelli coming out ahead of Gabriel Bortoletto yes he is
00:42:28that's why Mercedes had to pit maybe one lap longer
00:42:32uh then it would have been an awful lot tighter as he came back out again and important for their race that Antonelli uh is ahead of Gabriel Bortoletto
00:42:42so that's the overcut working really well there for the Mercedes
00:42:46and the four second stop for Bortoletto as well hasn't it sort of put him on the back foot bit of weaving from Antonelli to generate some temperature
00:42:54look at that that's blistering that's blistering on the right front of Max Verstappen's car
00:43:00that that's that's a big problem graining's one thing you lose grip and it but that is blistering
00:43:06and Pirelli will be nervous about that because you can't and so will Red Bull because you can get
00:43:12because it sort of it comes from the core of the tire you can have tire issues with blistering I'm talking about the integrity of the tire now
00:43:22so a black and white flag for track limits for Kimi Antonelli who goes over the white lines one more time
00:43:29and we'll get a five second penalty Max Verstappen's got blistering on his tires Lando Norris is six seconds back
00:43:36Oscar Piastri six seconds back on him and George Russell is now the fastest man on track on a new set of hard tires
00:43:42Caroon at race control
00:43:44just looking at the pace though George is tying as you said new fastest man but only three tenths quicker than what the McLarens have done
00:43:51and then four tenths quicker than Verstappen so you know and they have got buffer
00:43:56despite the blistering the performance still seems okay in those tires for the leaders
00:44:01certainly does on this lap though Lando Norris is already about three tenths faster than Max Verstappen
00:44:08who as I say that goes and puts in the quickest final sector over 27-1 and was just over a tenth faster than Lando Norris
00:44:17but Norris on that lap about just under three tenths quicker is that performance starting to just degrade a little bit on Verstappen's red bull
00:44:27so it's the right front wasn't it of Verstappen's blistering because that gets dragged around corners
00:44:32not the loaded tire in these like Parabolica but it gets dragged and they ran three degrees of front camber as well
00:44:40but it's it's surprising to see that pattern of blistering these days
00:44:46Gaslin Colopinto sorry mate
00:44:48Gaslin Colopinto you saw twelfth and thirteenth in the distance they're going to move up a bit now
00:44:54as are those behind because Carlos Sainz has come in to get rid of his medium compound tire and to make a pit stop
00:45:03he has to sit wait
00:45:05now as he stops just a little bit long of his marks
00:45:09before he can get those new tires on three seconds to stop and back out into the race
00:45:14everything's incredibly hot when you come in the axles the tires the wheel nut but by this stage of the season
00:45:21normally those pit stops are pretty crisp all the way down the pit lane we've seen a few lumpy ones today
00:45:27in defence of the Williams crew there I think Carlos had just gone a fraction long from his marks where the team would ideally love him to stop and when you do that
00:45:37those mechanics that are trained to put the wheel gun on almost before the car stops moving
00:45:43just have to reach out a little bit more and it can cause a few tenths of a second loss
00:45:48that'll lose your time as well looking up going into the first chicane Franco Colopinto
00:45:55unusual to lock the outside tire going down into there
00:46:00yeah Colopinto hasn't stopped yet neither is his teammate Pierre Gasly
00:46:04Gasly ahead of Colopinto as you can see Ted down to you
00:46:09it's a proper good old-fashioned standoff down here Crotty between Red Bull and McLaren
00:46:15nobody neither of them want to stop first McLaren starting to think
00:46:19well you Max Verstappen with your no downforce hurting your tires let's see how long you can go for
00:46:25and that is a bit of a sense a bit of worry at Red Bull they know that they don't want to push it
00:46:30maybe they can't push it quite as hard on the tires as McLaren and I just go back Martin to what
00:46:36Lauren McKee said to you on the grid what were his words about Max pushed us into an unusual setup direction
00:46:43those were his actual words I wrote them down and out with with that tea tray rear wing
00:46:48are the tires starting just to fade a bit Max has been on the radio saying the tires are starting to die a little bit
00:46:54but I'm just wondering whether McLaren is thinking that's fine with a bit more downforce our tires are just peachy
00:46:59peachy so let's explain why it's a long pit stop it's not an unduly long pit lane
00:47:06but while you're in the pit lane everybody's going down the pit straight at 200 miles an hour
00:47:11you lose so much time that's what drives it to be a one stopper to an extent
00:47:15but also why you need a very big gap in a 25 second gap to make a pit stop here
00:47:22whereas traditionally it's more 2021 isn't it just watching George Russell while you were giving us that explanation
00:47:29Martin and Russell who's pitted just what four laps ago and is going very nicely indeed
00:47:36as one of the fastest if not the fastest driver on the track but soon he is going to come up behind
00:47:42well not Isaac Hadja because he's come into the pits but the hard tire runners of Stroll and Ocon and Albon
00:47:49and that might just hold him up a touch Ferrari I think are hoping that that's going to be the case
00:47:54because then they might get a nice little gap to start thinking about a pit stop with Lewis Hamilton
00:47:59and with Charles Leclerc we'll keep an eye on that but Ferrari telling Charles Leclerc that these laps are good
00:48:06don't worry too much about George Russell he's going to start getting held up in the next few laps
00:48:11that's all being furiously calculated of course on the pit wall in the garage and back at the team bases
00:48:19probably 40 50 people working on that strategy philosophy
00:48:24ah but are Ferrari going to pits Charles Leclerc right now
00:48:28the answer is yes as they run out into the sunshine and Charles Leclerc makes the right hand darts into this pit lane
00:48:36oh was he too fast I wonder going into the pit lane
00:48:42all locked up as he went across the line that'll be a nervy moment
00:48:46and they find out what his speed was
00:48:49pit stop was good though very slick indeed he barely stopped moving before he had to get going again
00:48:54and Charles Leclerc comes out now ahead of Alex Albon not quite but for him better that he comes out ahead of Esteban Ocon
00:49:05Ocon hasn't pitted yet he's got that five second time penalty to serve but that's a nice little gap to bring him back out
00:49:11and he can ease his tyres in nice and gently and carry on his way so whereas George Russell was putting pressure on Charles Leclerc
00:49:21before the round of pit stops and before he had to drop back a bit there's now a big buffer between the Ferrari and the Mercedes
00:49:27yeah because Russell's tucked up isn't he behind Stroll and Ocon and it's costing dearly in terms of track position
00:49:34Colopinto with his pit stop and that is his first and it doesn't surprise me that he came in now after that lock up we saw a couple of laps ago
00:49:44here's George Russell behind Lance Stroll and when Mercedes expecting Ferrari to cover him off do they just try and do something a little bit different with George
00:49:53because overtaking and straight line speed wasn't in their favour and this is not going to be in their favour either
00:50:00and he's already having to move to the left-hand side to get out of the turbulent air of the Aston Martin
00:50:06and we know the Mercedes is probably carrying a little bit more drag than most of his tyres are a lot fresher because Stroll's not pitted yet
00:50:13but George definitely needs to clear these two cars quickly
00:50:17he certainly does
00:50:18you see Lance Stroll's rear tyre there and he wouldn't want to run too many more laps on that
00:50:29we can discuss it later
00:50:31okay not going to give you an answer just now Charles
00:50:34George Russell trying to get past Lance Stroll with DRS
00:50:38not as easy as it might have been anticipated when he was right up behind the Aston Martin coming out of the Parabolica and he just got that done
00:50:47I wonder if Ferrari were concerned about again any kind of durability with the tyre but we'll find out hopefully after the race
00:50:56they certainly don't want to tell him to hundreds of millions of people during the race
00:51:01no quite
00:51:02here's the lock-up
00:51:03and I hope for his sake and for every single one of the Tifosi here roaring Charles Leclerc on that he was not over 80 kilometres an hour when he passed that line
00:51:14no indication as yet that anything was wrong and away goes the Ferrari
00:51:21does that sound a bit eerie when it's on the slow motion replay
00:51:26wheel spin
00:51:28a few less frames per second or a few more frames per second
00:51:32right Russell's got another overtake to do this one on Esteban Ocon
00:51:36and Leclerc is flying on those hard compound tyres so
00:51:41the concept that the tower enders who put them on were struggling a bit
00:51:45they haven't got the same level of downforce perhaps
00:51:47but a new fastest lap of the Grand Prix from Charles Leclerc
00:51:51and can he get off down the road and get anywhere near the McLaren's
00:51:55here comes George Russell the Haas seems a little easier prey for him
00:51:59and he's up to seventh place as he gets the overtake made before the first chicane
00:52:05Leclerc's pace I'm sure will attract attention from the McLaren pitwall too
00:52:09and Lando what are your thoughts on the Sonic tyre?
00:52:11yeah um
00:52:13well I guess the opposite of the car ahead
00:52:16why not?
00:52:17go aggressive because they're not going to win the race as it stands currently
00:52:21and Red Bull seems to have them covered off
00:52:23but if you were Red Bull would you would you take that out of the equation
00:52:27and go onto the soft tyre yourself I wonder
00:52:29depends if you think you can keep them alive
00:52:31but I think what Lando is saying there is well
00:52:33you know do different
00:52:35find it if they let's go the opposite way
00:52:37because at the moment we haven't got the pace to beat them in a straight fight
00:52:41so let's try something else
00:52:43it's so weird down there with the storm that took those trees away a few years ago
00:52:47I'm just so used to this
00:52:50first race here in 1982
00:52:52but so used to that
00:52:54being in a shroud
00:52:56under a canopy of trees down there
00:52:58it's really sad that all those trees are gone
00:53:00absolutely
00:53:01slightly better for the drivers
00:53:03who don't kind of go light to shade light to shade as much
00:53:06but I'm with you it spoils the aesthetics
00:53:08of this rather glorious royal park on the outskirts of Milan
00:53:13here in Monza, Northern Italy
00:53:15at this time of the year
00:53:16what a time of year it is to come and watch your Formula One
00:53:20and for Carlos Sainz he's gaining on Oli Behrman
00:53:23he's got a reprimand for his troubles down at the second chicane
00:53:27not a penalty
00:53:28so can he get an overtake done here and try and move up to 13th
00:53:31he looks just a little bit too far back on this occasion
00:53:35the gap out in front now five seconds
00:53:37that was well over six seconds
00:53:39a few laps ago between Verstappen and Norris
00:53:41and Verstappen is coming in to the pits
00:53:45so what will McLaren do
00:53:47and how will they react to whatever Red Bull do
00:53:51for the time being Norris continues on his way
00:53:53Oscar Piastri I think is going to continue on his way
00:53:56Verstappen
00:53:57oh the gingerly stops there
00:53:59and puts the hard compound tyre on
00:54:01so they've decided they're not going to get the softs
00:54:03until the end of this race
00:54:05we've got to go with the hards
00:54:07and it's a brand new set of hards that Max Verstappen had
00:54:09that's why they're all nice and shiny
00:54:11and he'll come out into the sunshine
00:54:14in third place ahead of Lewis Hamilton
00:54:16you can see the Ferrari in the distance
00:54:19and for the second time this race
00:54:21Lando Norris now leads
00:54:23and Norris got 6.1 seconds advantage over his teammate Piastri
00:54:27so they've got a comfort zone there as well
00:54:31if they want to try something a little bit different against Verstappen
00:54:34so this is the decision now
00:54:35as Norris starts to catch Coller Pinter
00:54:38but that's the lap him
00:54:39do they keep running and try softs at the end
00:54:42or do they match what Red Bull have done
00:54:44I guess if they match what Red Bull have done
00:54:46they'll finish second and third
00:54:48I've got to watch Charles Leclerc just a touch
00:54:51and to be honest the medium tyres that the McLarens are running
00:54:55Charles Leclerc on his new hard tyre was only a tenth
00:54:58or just under a tenth of a second faster on the previous lap
00:55:00he's not making massive inroads shall we say
00:55:03into their advantage
00:55:05Ted let's head down to you
00:55:06I was watching Verstappen stop
00:55:08yeah good stuff by the Red Bull mechanics
00:55:10lots of fists being punched there
00:55:12there was a nice tidy stop
00:55:14the tyres that came off looked about the same as we saw on the pictures earlier
00:55:18I think it was just plateaued that blistering
00:55:21but it was more or less okay
00:55:23looks like Ferrari are coming out now
00:55:25they are responding
00:55:27deployment issues for Carlos Sainz and losing power
00:55:32and that's not going to help him try and catch Oli Behrman
00:55:36so here's the race leader
00:55:37gap of 19 seconds to Max Verstappen
00:55:40Hamilton now pits from fourth place for Ferrari
00:55:45let's watch this stop medium tyres off
00:55:49hard tyres on
00:55:50that's the favoured strategy by the teams here
00:55:53if he can get out ahead of George Russell
00:55:55that would be quite the achievement
00:55:57even with a 2.1 second stop
00:56:00but there powering down the main straight goes George Russell
00:56:04so he's going to come out behind him
00:56:06despite extending that stint
00:56:08and he's also got Ocon and he's got Stroll
00:56:11in between the two cars
00:56:13yeah so would you rather be in the closing stages
00:56:17on a used set of softs or a
00:56:19quite use but
00:56:22said a hard combo
00:56:24the soft won't last all that long
00:56:26of course the fuel load's gone down by then
00:56:28but that appears to be
00:56:30what McLaren are looking at
00:56:32so Piazza just took three tens out of Norris' lead there
00:56:35here comes Kimi Antonelli
00:56:37round the outside of the Curva Grande
00:56:38go on Kimi give it some
00:56:40and he has up in the tenth place
00:56:42nice from Kimi Antonelli
00:56:44and gets the move done on Pierre Gasly
00:56:47who extended his contract with Alpine this week
00:56:50to take his association with the team through to the end of 2028
00:56:54Kimi Antonelli still waiting on a contract decision for 2026
00:56:59and he's up in the tenth place and back in the points
00:57:02fastest man on the track is Max Verstappen on the hard compound attire
00:57:08and he was about two tenths faster than Lando Norris on the previous lap
00:57:13about the same time as Oscar Piastri in fact
00:57:17sorry about a second faster than Oscar Piastri
00:57:20and 1.2 seconds faster than Lando Norris
00:57:23and when you're inside the car
00:57:24it looks because you
00:57:26the eye and the human brain is so incredible
00:57:29great job on the stop guys
00:57:32stereo's locked
00:57:33went a bit long into his stop
00:57:35into his box there but
00:57:36so the human eye brain
00:57:38dials some of this out
00:57:40some of it
00:57:41it's still actually
00:57:42your picture you're looking at
00:57:44is
00:57:45is quite disturbed
00:57:46when you're driving along on a bumpy piece of track
00:57:49but not quite as bad as it looks there
00:57:51Sainz getting a lot closer to Oli Behrmann
00:57:53Portoletto
00:57:54right on the tail of Pierre Gasly
00:57:56but no positions exchanged
00:57:58in that first chicane
00:57:59here comes Carlos Sainz for another stab at it
00:58:01through the curva grande
00:58:03is he going to go around the outside?
00:58:04no he's going to try going down the inside here
00:58:06because Behrmann had him covered off
00:58:08to the left hand side
00:58:09but now all they tangled
00:58:11it was the outside line
00:58:13he was trying to take into the second chicane
00:58:15the two cars come together
00:58:17they're almost left stricken in the middle of the road
00:58:19for a moment
00:58:20as Isaac Hadja moves past them
00:58:23but that was unfortunate
00:58:24and for the second race running
00:58:26it's Carlos Sainz getting involved
00:58:28and coming a cropper
00:58:30with another car
00:58:31whilst trying to make an overtake
00:58:33what did you make of that Martin?
00:58:34I'd like to see it again
00:58:35I think Oli Behrmann
00:58:37probably should have got out of that one
00:58:38but let's see it again
00:58:39and see if Sainz left him
00:58:42Carlos Sainz left him racing room on the inside
00:58:45we shall see
00:58:46on board with Lewis Hamilton
00:58:47Lance Stroll
00:58:48the car in front of him
00:58:49Stroll hasn't pitted yet
00:58:51neither is Ocon
00:58:52currently in seventh
00:58:53neither is Albon
00:58:54who's running in fourth
00:58:55neither of the top two
00:58:57and Hamilton
00:58:58makes that progression
00:59:00very nicely indeed
00:59:01and he's up into eighth place
00:59:03he's got some overtaking done today
00:59:05has Lewis Hamilton
00:59:06after starting tenth
00:59:07and here's Gabriel Portoleto
00:59:08who had a little look at Pierre Gasly
00:59:10on the previous lap
00:59:12and second time round makes it stick
00:59:14so the slipstream in DRS is good
00:59:16but if you get a good exit
00:59:17because you've got much better tyres off Parabolica
00:59:20that really helps your straight line speed massively
00:59:22which is why you're seeing them suddenly
00:59:24now they're on different tyre life
00:59:26breezing past
00:59:27all right
00:59:28you get to have a look at this one again
00:59:29it's been noted by race control
00:59:31Sainz is ahead
00:59:33and then gets tagged by Behrman
00:59:36it's his corner
00:59:37it was his corner
00:59:39um
00:59:40but he didn't leave racing room on the inside
00:59:43I think that
00:59:44I'm going to put that down as a racing incident
00:59:46yeah he just turned across in front of me like I wasn't there
00:59:51that's a fair comment
00:59:52yep which is Oli Behrman's assessment of the situation
00:59:56and he does he turns into the corner
00:59:58but Behrman has nowhere to go
01:00:01the Sainz
01:00:02it looked like he was far enough ahead
01:00:04to claim that the corner's his
01:00:05he wasn't but he wasn't entirely ahead
01:00:07he certainly had
01:00:09yes he got the right
01:00:10he'd more than claimed
01:00:11his
01:00:12his front axle was beyond Behrman's front axle
01:00:14but
01:00:15um
01:00:16he hadn't cleared him
01:00:17and I think he needed to maybe a bit of space on the inside
01:00:19uh
01:00:20Hamilton
01:00:21gets up into sixth place
01:00:23uh
01:00:24that one
01:00:25uh
01:00:26almost as easy as the last straw one on the uh
01:00:27the previous lap
01:00:28but
01:00:29as I say Hamilton on
01:00:30on fresh tyres
01:00:31and the two that he's cleared
01:00:32uh
01:00:33were
01:00:34have uh
01:00:35yet to stop in the race
01:00:36Albon
01:00:37has now stopped
01:00:38so Hamilton will move
01:00:39up into uh
01:00:40to sixth place
01:00:41I'm with you Martin
01:00:42it looked racing incident
01:00:43ish to me
01:00:44that
01:00:45the trouble for both of them is it's just relegated them down
01:00:47and the stewards are going to have a look
01:00:49at Carlos Sainz for causing a collision
01:00:52uh
01:00:53there is Lando Norris
01:00:54our race leader
01:00:55the gap between himself and Oscar Piastri
01:00:57is four seconds
01:00:58so Piastri's just closed in on his teammate the last few laps
01:01:01and the gap to Max Verstappen
01:01:03uh
01:01:04from Lando Norris is thirteen and a half seconds
01:01:05and Verstappen really is closing in
01:01:07at about a second a lap
01:01:08yeah
01:01:09these soft compound tyres
01:01:10are going to need to be mighty aren't they
01:01:11aren't they just
01:01:12uh
01:01:13you lose
01:01:14about 23-24 seconds
01:01:15in the pit stop
01:01:16if they were to pit now
01:01:17uh
01:01:18the McLaren drivers would need to make up Ted Kravitz
01:01:20ten seconds in their final stint
01:01:22if they're going to overtake Max
01:01:24and
01:01:25Max has
01:01:26a safety car pit stop covered as well
01:01:28because it takes fourteen seconds
01:01:30to do a pit stop under a safety car
01:01:32or a virtual safety car
01:01:34so uh yeah i mean had that incident between Sainz and Behrman ended up in a safety car
01:01:39i mean it would have been very close but now Verstappen is safe to the McLarens
01:01:44uh under a safety car stop so that's all worked out very well
01:01:48good point Ted very good point
01:01:50so they might as well bring the McLarens in?
01:01:53um
01:01:54um
01:01:55no i think i think what Seb was saying
01:01:56even even
01:01:57if McLaren had the benefit of a safety car Verstappen
01:02:00would still have been
01:02:01would still have been leading
01:02:02so
01:02:03well do you bring them in now then?
01:02:04because that safety car
01:02:06um
01:02:07looks like it
01:02:08no no no he's going to stay out again
01:02:09yeah
01:02:10because the safety car window is in Verstappen's favour
01:02:13yeah
01:02:14i mean i'm assuming they think the tyres are still okay
01:02:16Piastri just took six tenths out of Norris on that lap
01:02:20so Norris is not enjoying this phase of his tyre life
01:02:24and you can see it's wagging its tail under traction
01:02:28rear tyres complaining
01:02:30um
01:02:31i think if
01:02:32i think if
01:02:33team Lando will be thinking
01:02:35we've got to do something
01:02:36to actually
01:02:37protect second place here
01:02:39yes which might be
01:02:41what prompts Lando to come in sooner rather than later
01:02:44and Verstappen
01:02:45on the last lap
01:02:471.6 seconds faster than Lando Norris
01:02:50and Lando's side of the garage will get first option
01:02:53but if they choose not to take it
01:02:55i'm sure
01:02:56Oscar's side of the garage
01:02:57can uh
01:02:58then take the high ground on the stop
01:03:00and Piastri has a big enough gap back to Charles Leclerc
01:03:03who's currently running in fourth
01:03:05so it's not like McLaren are going to lose two and three
01:03:07or P2 and P3
01:03:09unless something goes wrong in the uh the pit stops
01:03:11and that's why
01:03:12they've decided to extend these stints
01:03:14and try something a little bit different
01:03:15they've got nothing to lose
01:03:16Alex Albon on Kimi Antonelli into the first chicane
01:03:19Antonelli survives uh on this particular occasion
01:03:23but
01:03:24has Albon got better traction coming out of that chicane
01:03:27well he did
01:03:28and then Antonelli moved over
01:03:30and i don't know if there was contact made or not
01:03:31but Albon certainly got onto the grass
01:03:33and now he's having a go into the second chicane
01:03:36Norris powers his way over the line
01:03:38Alex Albon
01:03:39one of his very good friends
01:03:40powers his way into ninth place
01:03:42it's an incredible recovery from the Williams down the next straight wasn't it
01:03:46having been on the grass at one point
01:03:48but um so what's the gap now then 3.7
01:03:52so actually Lando's just done a personal best there
01:03:55um now if you're new to Formula One welcome
01:03:58but the reason they can't just carry on to the end
01:04:01which you might think well you're in the lead
01:04:02just don't stop at all
01:04:03they don't need to stop the tyres they have to by the regulation
01:04:07if it's an entirely dry race you must use two different tyre compounds
01:04:12that is why McLaren are obliged to stop both their cars
01:04:17and that's uh looked equally as close from the rear of Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes
01:04:22as it did riding on board with Alex Albon when we first saw it
01:04:25and on those medium tyres
01:04:27fresher medium tyres he manages to get through
01:04:29and there's the traction element and they've got the same donkeys behind them
01:04:33Lando we will box this lap onto the soft tyre and i'll come up one
01:04:37you do want to box the other car first?
01:04:39yep we'll do that we'll swap it round so stay out
01:04:42well only if he doesn't undercut otherwise i'll box first
01:04:45there will be no undercut
01:04:47yeah and that they can control from the pit wall as they try and keep it fair
01:04:52and Lando Norris does then carry on on his way
01:04:56as Oscar Piastri comes into the pits for what we're assuming
01:04:59is going to be a set of soft compound tyres
01:05:01and see if they can well give the McLaren cars a bit more pace
01:05:06in these closing stages that they haven't had in their battle with Max Verstappen so far
01:05:11so i can only assume Lando thinks but pit the other one for as long as i'm not going to get in front of me
01:05:16look at that stop 1.9 seconds
01:05:18because he thinks that the soft tyre might fade a little bit towards the end or something
01:05:24because he's giving up a lap of extra grip there
01:05:27but a very clear thought process going on
01:05:30and that then so it's to allow is to allow Piastri to defend then against Leclerc isn't it
01:05:37is why they've done that
01:05:39it is why Lando has been very generous on that and i'm sure the team were talking about it
01:05:44but that makes sure Piastri stays ahead of Charlie Leclerc
01:05:48so Kimi Antonelli has been spotted by race control and noted for forcing another driver off the track
01:05:54as Alex Albon got through
01:05:56i'm not sure if that will be investigated much by the stewards
01:06:01and our race leader is going to be coming into the pits at the end of this lap
01:06:05which will allow Max Verstappen to take what today has been his rightful place
01:06:11and out in front very much his rightful place he's controlled it superbly well
01:06:17Oli Behrman has got a 10 second time penalty for causing a collision
01:06:23with Sainz
01:06:24yeah so the stewards didn't think it was a racing incident
01:06:27they did think it was Carlos Sainz's corner
01:06:30what's going on here?
01:06:31and what is going on here Lando Norris seemed to be stationary
01:06:34well he was like 4 more seconds than Oscar Piastri
01:06:37oh that's going to be difficult
01:06:39well that's going to be very difficult if Oscar Piastri
01:06:42by the time he gets to the pit lane exit
01:06:45you're boxing the cars this way round to ensure you cover Leclerc
01:06:48you are free with Lando once he's ahead of the pit exit
01:06:51yeah but he's not ahead at the pit exit
01:06:53look at that
01:06:54Oscar Piastri is ahead of Lando Norris
01:06:57who was stationary for 4 more seconds in the pit stop
01:07:00but how do McLaren now swap this one around
01:07:04and his Oscar
01:07:05well
01:07:06front left gun we're hearing for Lando's pit stop
01:07:09and we're about to see that
01:07:12might have gone a little bit long
01:07:16yeah it wasn't tightened up properly
01:07:18that was the confusion
01:07:20and so the mechanic was told
01:07:21now come on you've got to go and get that tightened a bit more
01:07:25oh dear
01:07:26that must have felt like 40 seconds
01:07:31yeah
01:07:32for Lando Norris
01:07:33have we got hungry in reverse going on here now about handing places back or
01:07:38is that just the rub of the green as far as the team are concerned
01:07:42well so this is now Oscar Piastri extending his lead in the championship to Lando Norris
01:07:47I had a great chat with him just sitting in the McLaren motorhome
01:07:52excuse me in Zandvoort
01:07:54when he made it quite clear Oscar that as much as he wants to win this world championship
01:08:00and as much as he will do everything he can to win this world championship
01:08:03he's not going to do anything to go against the team
01:08:06as he says in the future I will need this team and I will need their help
01:08:09so what they asked me to do I will comply with
01:08:13hence yesterday giving Lando Norris the toe
01:08:16to help him in their qualifying and to get him through to Q3
01:08:20but that is one thing Martin Brundle
01:08:25you've done all of the hard work so this should bring this home no risk
01:08:28no risk
01:08:30so I'll put you under Oscar Piastri's crash helmet back to your racing days here
01:08:35if they ask you to swap around what do you do?
01:08:38I think he should because Lando would have got the 1.9 second stop wouldn't he?
01:08:45but he's played the team game to help Oscar defend against Leclerc
01:08:51and I think the team will feel extremely guilty about that
01:08:59allowing that pit stop to happen in reverse positions
01:09:03and then putting putting Norris behind Piastri
01:09:08we'll see what they do
01:09:10well Lando set a fastest lap of the race
01:09:12which by the way was less than a tenth of a second quicker on that lap
01:09:15than Max Verstappen who's got an 18 and a half second lead
01:09:19now Lando is catching and has been catching on this lap
01:09:23Oscar this is a bit like Hungary last year we pitted in this order for team reasons
01:09:26please let Lando pass and you're free to race
01:09:29I mean we said that a slow pit stop was part of racing
01:09:34so I don't really get what's changed here
01:09:38but we really want to do it
01:09:41they help him
01:09:42fair play Oscar Piastri on that one
01:09:44he said his piece
01:09:46he made his point
01:09:47and he did what the team asked him to do
01:09:49yeah I think that's honestly I think that's fair
01:09:51you know Lando played the team game
01:09:54didn't get the 1.9 second stop
01:09:57but now they're free to race
01:09:59yeah
01:10:00so at least he's put Oscar into position to have a race
01:10:04which he was about 3 and a bit
01:10:063.3, 3.4 seconds behind before the pit stop phase
01:10:10yeah I was going to say he's a lot closer after the pit stops
01:10:13if he does want to have a race here
01:10:16and neither of the McLarets are close enough to Max Verstappen
01:10:19who's been told take no risks and bring this car home
01:10:22and that's pretty much what he's doing
01:10:24so it's the championship
01:10:25thanks Oscar you're free to race clinical clear head mate
01:10:29and Oscar Piastri now has DRS on his team mate as well
01:10:34so within all of that at least it's put him in position to have a race with Norris
01:10:39which he didn't have beforehand
01:10:41exactly and he's got a clear mind and a clear conscience as well
01:10:44if indeed there was any doubt about that one to go and race
01:10:49he's not within a second I don't think going through
01:10:51oh no he was going through the detection zone
01:10:54it was right on the fringes
01:10:56so he's got that slight advantage with the DRS
01:11:00well the upshot is here Oscar Piastri has got a chance here of getting second place
01:11:06and his team mate Lando Norris is under pressure
01:11:08it was a very slow pit stop and that front left wasn't
01:11:12the wheel that wasn't tightened up properly enough
01:11:15and this is not what Lando Norris obviously needs
01:11:18especially off the back of Zandvoort when they had the oil leak
01:11:21the oil pipe that ruptured somewhat and that caused him to retire from the Grand Prix
01:11:27Lance Stroll finally pits leaving Esteban Ocon as the only driver who hasn't made a pit stop in this race
01:11:34and he's still got a five second penalty to serve when he does come in
01:11:39the McLaren wheelsmiths are no faster on these tyres than Max Verstappen on his hard compound tyres
01:11:45so it was worth a try because kind of why not
01:11:49but they're not the answer to their problems today
01:11:52Lance Stroll has tumbled down the order
01:11:55Norris and Piastri have swapped places most
01:11:58just because he had a slow stop?
01:12:01it's not our business but I guess it keeps it fair between the drivers in terms of championship
01:12:06you focus on the road ahead as well please
01:12:08the debrief has already started on the
01:12:12the Giampiero Lambiassi and Max Verstappen podcast there
01:12:16I was about to say Stroll has had a really long stop and he's down in 18th now and last
01:12:21Piastri didn't get DRS on that straight
01:12:24middle sector Lando Norris was about 3 tenths faster
01:12:28used a bit of electrical energy there just to boost his way to what I think should be
01:12:33comparative safety from here on in
01:12:36there's Max leading the Grand Prix comfortably outside
01:12:40and he's working out who's had a slow stop and what have you
01:12:44oh someone's been off down there
01:12:46big time
01:12:47yeah
01:12:48I just wonder listening to Max Verstappen's comments
01:12:51I wonder if he'd have complied in that particular moment
01:12:54and what he had just said
01:12:56he had a slow stop
01:12:57nothing to do with me
01:12:58it's
01:13:00every point's a prisoner to get out there and do what I can
01:13:03but
01:13:05we're talking about 3 points when Piastri went into the race with a 34 point championship lead
01:13:10it wasn't just a slow stop though
01:13:12if it was I agree if it was just a slow stop
01:13:16that's the way the cookie crumbles
01:13:18but it was playing the team game that Lando was doing that in the end cost him
01:13:23absolutely
01:13:24Max Verstappen has started another lap
01:13:27he's got two laps to go in this to become the first driver to win from pole at Monza since 2019
01:13:33the last five pole sitters here have all failed to go and win the race
01:13:39pole sitter today when he got past Lando Norris for the second time
01:13:44has never looked like conceding victory or anyone getting ahead of him
01:13:49the battle for second one and a half seconds between Norris and Piastri
01:13:53Charles Leclerc is going to take the chequered flag
01:13:57fourth for Ferrari
01:13:59George Russell and Lewis Hamilton completing the top six as it stands currently
01:14:04Esteban Ocon is in the pits
01:14:06so he will tumble out of the points
01:14:09Alex Albon
01:14:10it was fifth in Zandvoort
01:14:11is on course for a seventh place finish here
01:14:14another great recovery from him
01:14:16he started 14th after a disappointing qualifying
01:14:19Kimi Antonelli will be in the points once again
01:14:22Gabriel Bortoleto
01:14:24and Isaac Hadja who started in the pit lane
01:14:27is currently holding off Carlos Sainz for the one remaining point in this race
01:14:32all the while I've been saying that
01:14:34that's allowed Max Verstappen to complete another 3.6 miles
01:14:37and he's now starting his final lap Martin
01:14:40as he powers towards with another new lap record
01:14:43at what will be win number 66 in his career
01:14:46it's well for Las Vegas as well
01:14:48because a very similar aero set up there
01:14:50so that looks good for Red Bull
01:14:53they've definitely found a much better car haven't they
01:14:57for the high speed low drag circuit of Monza
01:15:01and McLaren's advantages of tyre degradation
01:15:05and high speed corners doesn't exist around here
01:15:09but they've still managed to get a second and a third
01:15:12Kelly Piquet has come to Monza to see how her partner gets on
01:15:18and he's getting on very nicely
01:15:20Kimi Antonelli has been given a five second penalty for driving erratically
01:15:24that's going to cost him at least one place if not two if not three
01:15:29it might take him out of the points in this race
01:15:33which is not what he needs in his home race
