00:00We change topic. The United States Department of Homeland Security announced on Monday the beginning of immigration enforcement operations in the state of Chicago as part of the Trump cabinet's anti-immigrant onslaught.
00:12According to the DHS press release, the operation will focus on arresting and least illegal aliens who have flocked to Chicago because of sanctuary policies that allow them to walk freely on U.S. streets.
00:25The law has been strongly condemned by local governments and labelled it illegal by law experts.
00:31According to Chicago Immigration Attorney Justin Burton, the announcement of enforcement operations has led to a significant reduction in the participation of migrant communities in society's activities for fear of being detained as part of the rising tide of migratory repression.
00:55In this sense, the U.S. Supreme Court has temporarily allowed the Trump administration to resume aggressive immigration rates in Southern California by lifting a lower court order that limited federal agents from detaining individuals without reasonable suspicion.
01:10A ruling permits immigration and customs enforcement agents to base stops on factors including race, language and occupation, despite concerns that these criteria lead to unconstitutional racial profiling.
01:25This decision overturns a prior injunction aimed at protecting immigrant communities from unwarranted stops and detentions, raising significant concerns about civil liberties and the potential for widespread discrimination.
01:38Critics argue that this ruling effectively endorsed racial profiling and increased the vulnerability of Latino communities, many of whom are law-abiding residents targeted based on language and workplace settings.
01:52Today, the Supreme Court, the very body that used to advance civil rights and defend personal liberties, has now given the green light for law enforcement to profile and detain Angelenos based on their race.
02:15A mark of authoritarianism is a country where the government can stop you and ask you to show your papers.
02:23Papers, please. That is not Los Angeles. That is not America. And that is not the country that we want to live in.
02:30A mark of racism is a country where you can be stopped because of how you look.
02:35Apartheid South Africa is a great example of that, where you have to provide papers because of your appearance.
02:41That is unacceptable. That is unacceptable. That is not acceptable in Los Angeles. And that is not acceptable in our country.
