Well-behaved children have nothing to fear. The words of the Top Cop this morning, as armed and unarmed police officers were deployed at a number of schools across the country. Rynessa Cutting has more from the Police Commissioner's tour of schools in South on Monday.
Transcript
00:00So just a further warning to the parents out there, keep your children in check.
00:06The well-behaved children who are here for that particular purpose of getting an education
00:11have no reason to fear for my officers.
00:13It's those errant ones who want to bring disruption to the education facility and the system.
00:19Those are the ones that will have to fear.
00:21Top cop Alistair Guevarao is doubling down on his vow to have the TTPS deal with out-of-control children.
00:28In a better to curb escalating school violence and indiscipline.
00:33The majority of right-thinking parents want to see their children inside of a safe environment
00:39where they will not be bullied, distorted, or beaten on a daily basis.
00:44How would you respond to those parents who need a little reassurance?
00:48The reassurance is put yourself in a position where your child is attending a school
00:52and you get that phone call, come by the hospital.
00:55Your child has a broken collarbone, ribs, a broken arm, lacerations.
01:00And this is something that is real and has happened in the past.
01:03So put yourself in the position of those parents who now have to go and nurse their children
01:07back to health from a hospital ward.
01:09And think if you wouldn't want a police officer in your school.
01:12At least two officers, one male and one female, will be posted at each of the selected schools,
01:19the list of which has not been made public.
01:22But the police commissioner has confirmed that some officers will be armed.
01:27I will not get into what each officer has in terms of being armed or unarmed, whatever,
01:34because it is all these unabstations that were done
01:38which would dictate what the officers will be required to utilize.
01:43The police officers must be able to protect themselves, the members of staff, and the other students.
01:49So I'm not sure if you all want them to come to karate classes,
01:52but my officers will be appropriately armed to treat with the inherent risk.
02:00The top cop says the officers who have been deployed to schools have received specialist training.
02:06The initiative is to be assessed and reviewed over a six-month period.
02:11So the interaction with students shall be minimal, all right?
02:14They are not here to take over or be a part of the education system.
02:19They are part of the law enforcement initiative
02:23that will then be monitored and evaluated to see how we can tweak it.
02:27If incidents should arise, the police will first serve as a response
02:31to treat with that immediate threat.
02:33And then when that is over, we will know what investigative methodologies that need to be applied.
02:39And if anything, a person should be charged,
02:41there are particular processes to be adopted
02:44because we are dealing with children.
02:45We have the children's judges' rules and particular scenarios
02:48within different legislations that would come into effect.
02:52Gasparullo Secondary School, St. Madeleine Secondary School,
02:56and La Romaine Secondary School
02:58are among the schools in the south to get a complement of officers.
