00:01Three years ago, sporting legend Freddie Flintoff
00:04set out to prove that cricket wasn't just for the elite.
00:07It's who, isn't it?
00:09By creating a team like no other in his hometown of Preston.
00:12What has he got us wearing?
00:14Well, that's a shot of me.
00:15Over the course of a turbulent season...
00:17Seriously, I'm getting off of you.
00:19...and an overseas cricket tour to India...
00:21We're all going to find out something about ourselves, me included.
00:24Freddie changed the lives of his unlikely team in more ways than one.
00:28We can do this, all right? Yeah.
00:30We're all here for you.
00:31Inspired by the success of the lads from Preston...
00:34Are you messin'?
00:35Freddie now wants to see if he can expand the project...
00:38That's a shot.
00:39...and begin a Field of Dreams cricket league...
00:41That's safe, yeah.
00:42Yeah, get a sense out of your depth.
00:44...with the hope of reaching even more kids across the UK.
00:47No, no, no, no, no!
00:48Not one bit of that is fun of.
00:50So far, he's started to build a girls' team in Blackpool...
00:54I see why my mum fancies Freddie.
00:57Why?
01:00No, no, no!
01:01...and a struggle to control his boys' team in Liverpool.
01:04Oi, oi, oi, oi, oi!
01:06You can't do that.
01:07Seriously, you can't do that.
01:08But despite the challenges, Freddie threw them into their first-ever cricket match...
01:12What a small thing!
01:14Right!
01:15...which they lost to the lads from Preston.
01:18What happened there?
01:20If we can just keep him engaged, he's got a chance.
01:23But it could all fall apart just as quick.
01:25Plan for tonight.
01:26Everyone will bowl.
01:27Everyone will bat.
01:28Yeah?
01:29Yeah.
01:30With two clubs already on the go, Kyle is running tonight's training session in Liverpool.
01:43Right!
01:44Do you two want to get your pads on?
01:46Well, I've got your jacket on.
01:47It's not going to give you any extra protection.
01:49Need a bigger coat, you lad!
01:52What I've seen on the training pitch...
01:58That fluid acted.
02:01The boys have got some naughty potential.
02:04We're definitely different to your average cricket team.
02:08Right, Stevie, do you want to bat next?
02:10Yeah.
02:11Just the best, aren't we?
02:12No-one's like us.
02:14What do we need to wear?
02:16Get all the pads, gloves, everything on.
02:18Have you got a box?
02:20Definitely need one of them on.
02:22**** that cup.
02:24If I ever get this in the balls, it doesn't mean to **** feel like that.
02:29Stepping up to face the hard ball is 16-year-old Stevie,
02:33who's choosing to follow his own rules by not wearing all of the protective kit.
02:38You're in!
02:40Stevie's going to whack this move.
02:46Oh!
02:47That's why he wears a cup!
02:49Do you have a cup in, Stevie?
02:52Doesn't look like it.
02:53Why's he not got a box on?
02:54He's got tools to put all the kit on.
02:56Oh, ****!
02:58Did you get it in a dick?
02:59Yeah!
03:00Oh, my kids aren't going to be happy in the future, you know?
03:05Oh!
03:06Right, get a tennis racket, get a ball, you go and take the lads for some catching practice.
03:12Shit!
03:13Right, put the cricket balls on the floor.
03:15Stevie!
03:16Stevie!
03:17It was hard work tonight.
03:20I think after the game, I thought they'd come with, like, a good attitude, wanting to try and get better.
03:27And it just shows, like, when Ryan and Stevie are not interested, it just brings the whole group down.
03:35No, no, Stevie!
03:36What are you doing?
03:37This is so much effort, lad.
03:39Everyone's fans are a bit boring, coming back to doing normal training.
03:43I think everyone wants to get back to playing games against other people, because I think they find that more enjoyable.
03:50You want to help them get them better, but...
03:52Oh!
03:53You know, if they're not interested, you're just banging your head against a brick wall.
03:57Thank you, James!
04:0850 miles up the coast in Blackpool...
04:10I've missed you.
04:11Thank you, I've missed you, Matt.
04:12Good to see you again.
04:14After a successful try-out session, Freddie's girls' team have started training at South Shore Cricket Club.
04:20You seem energetic, I look for it.
04:23I hit a car!
04:24Girls!
04:25With word of a new team in the area spreading, more players are turning up for practice.
04:31Night, Maddie!
04:32We've got a new girl tonight, Maddie. Has everyone met Maddie?
04:35Yeah, me.
04:36Molly, are you already getting terrorised?
04:37How do you know each other?
04:38School.
04:39School?
04:40Worst luck.
04:41Yeah.
04:42Yeah, there's a bit of history here, I think.
04:44I just don't like her.
04:47I've never liked her to be fair.
04:50Come on, shall we have her back?
04:51Yes, yes, bro!
04:53No, this is wobbling!
04:54That's funny!
04:55Oh, my God!
04:56Do you want to take this one, Kyle?
04:57No, that's you.
04:58Batting coach.
04:59It's not the easiest coaching.
05:00I'm not the type of coaching I'm used to.
05:01Keep your eye on it.
05:02Watch your eyes.
05:03Here you go.
05:04Yes, Molly!
05:05Come on, Molly, run!
05:06Come on, Molly, run!
05:07Not sure when they're going to play against sides or when we can step it up, but they're keen,
05:10aren't they?
05:11That's the biggest thing.
05:12They're smiling and enjoying it.
05:13You can't ask for it much more than that.
05:14As long as they're doing that, we've got a chance.
05:15What are you doing?
05:16Shut up.
05:17These gloves are giving me weird feelings.
05:18New girl, 17-year-old Maddy, has grown up in Blackpool and has lived in Canada.
05:19They've got a chance.
05:20I'm not sure when they're going to play against sides or when we can step it up, but they're
05:23keen, aren't they?
05:24That's the biggest thing.
05:25They're smiling and enjoying it.
05:26Can't ask for it much more than that.
05:27I'm scared to run in these.
05:28As long as they're doing that, we've got a chance.
05:33What are you doing?
05:36Shut up.
05:37These gloves are giving me weird feelings.
05:42New girl, 17-year-old Maddy, has grown up in Blackpool and has lived in care since the
05:48age of 11.
05:49I'm scared.
05:50What do I do?
05:54Oh, that one!
05:56So, currently, I'm not in no education.
05:59I'm not working.
06:01I did have a job, but I quit that because I didn't like it.
06:04Because if I like something, I'll stick to it.
06:07But if I know I don't like it, yeah, I'm gone.
06:10Yes, Maddy.
06:13Oh, great!
06:14Yes!
06:16Maddy, that's amazing.
06:18Are you sure you've not done this before?
06:19No.
06:20Shush.
06:21I'm being serious.
06:22Seriously?
06:23Yeah.
06:24Natural.
06:25Come on, Mad.
06:27Oh, this.
06:29Go!
06:30You need your back.
06:31You need your back.
06:32You need your back.
06:33No, someone else can have that.
06:34Pissing me off.
06:35Why?
06:36Can't hit the ball.
06:37I'm sorry.
06:38I can get irritated really fast.
06:40If I can't do something right and if it doesn't go my way.
06:43It takes time to get used to.
06:46Someone else go back for a minute.
06:48My conflict goes down because I just don't believe in myself.
06:52Maddy.
06:53Give us a minute, please.
06:54I've been in care since the age of 11.
06:55I think because of the way I've grown up, I'm very cautious about letting people in.
07:08You've just got to leave me alone and just, I'll be back.
07:13You obviously play a bit of sport, don't you?
07:18What did you do?
07:19Football.
07:20Who for?
07:21Blackpool.
07:22Did you?
07:23In Lancashire.
07:24Really?
07:25Yeah.
07:26What, still?
07:27No.
07:28Gave up with that.
07:29Why?
07:30Got bored of it.
07:31What do you do then?
07:32Nothing.
07:33Sleep.
07:34Eat.
07:35School?
07:36No.
07:37I left.
07:38Talking about...
07:39What type of stuff?
07:40Messages.
07:41Just calling teacher names and everything.
07:43Really?
07:44Not going to lessons.
07:45What do you want to do?
07:46I don't know.
07:47Go to play football?
07:49No.
07:50No, you're done with that?
07:51Yeah.
07:52Enjoy being around the girls?
07:54Yeah, it's been all right.
07:55All right.
07:56Meeting new people.
07:58Not a big fan of it, mate.
08:00Can't lie.
08:01Yeah.
08:03Nice conversation.
08:06Yeah.
08:07Not giving me much, are you?
08:09No.
08:10No?
08:11Bit too awkward yet.
08:12Really?
08:13Leave it for another day.
08:14Come here, Maddie.
08:16Put your front foot here.
08:19I think she's got real potential.
08:21So with this one, point where you want it to go.
08:24And as that comes down, just bring that other one straight over it.
08:27It's obvious she's played a sport before.
08:28She's kicking the ball around, doing keeping ups with cricket balls.
08:32Oh, ****.
08:34This team's actually got no real direction.
08:36Hopefully we can help her with that.
08:39Oh, this is heavy.
08:40You know what?
08:41Maybe through this, we can inspire her to get back into sport.
08:44You ready for it to go over there?
08:46Yeah.
08:47OK.
08:48It's down there.
08:49Molly.
08:50Come on, Maddie.
08:51Keep going.
08:52Molly, cos if she smacks the ball...
08:55If she hits it and you're still there, it'll hurt you.
08:57Diddons.
08:58You're just not too cocky.
09:00Crick.
09:01Wanker.
09:02Yeah, I already knew her.
09:04I think it'll be quite interesting to see how me and Maddie get on over the next couple of weeks.
09:10Right.
09:11Come on.
09:12In we come.
09:13How are we all feeling about the girls' team?
09:17Enjoyed that?
09:18It was all right.
09:19It was all right?
09:20You all right?
09:21Yeah.
09:22I can see the new Maddie and Molly clashing.
09:25You could tell there was something going on.
09:27Yeah.
09:28I think they're fighting for top spot, aren't they?
09:29Yeah.
09:30All right, there's a couple of problems.
09:31Mm.
09:32But I can see how this club could be the start of something quite good.
09:36Yeah.
09:37And hopefully for women's cricket in the wider area.
09:40Keep coming.
09:41Keep improving.
09:42Organise some games.
09:43Keep practising.
09:44Keep working hard.
09:45They're willing to listen.
09:47They're willing to learn.
09:48So I think we've got a chance for these girls.
09:50Right.
09:51Well done.
09:52Well done.
09:53Everyone.
09:54Let's tidy up.
09:55So far, we're in good shape.
09:57We've got a boys' team in Bootle who've played the first match and done all right.
10:01We've got the girls' team in Blackpool.
10:04But I want to do another one.
10:06I want to do a third team.
10:08How nice would it be if we could get all the teams playing against each other?
10:13I don't know if I'm a pioneer or I'm stupid.
10:16But we'll find out, aren't we?
10:19But...
10:20Hot pinnate.
10:21I'll call it Twitly.
10:24On the hunt for a third club to add to his cricket league, Freddie's heading to his adopted
10:26hometown of Manchester.
10:28The reason for three is, we did one, and we showed that could work.
10:31And moving forward, if we do three and we get them right, we've created somewhat of
10:37a blueprint, which can be carried forward, to anywhere in the country, irrespective of
10:41irrespective of your postcode or how much money you've got or what your parents are to cricket
10:47should be for everyone four miles northeast of the city centre Newton Heath has a rich
10:55sporting history with its football club going on to become the world-famous Manchester United
11:02established in 1859 Newton Heath Cricket Club used to be the hub of the community hosting
11:09famous sporting legend with the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton even playing on its ground but over
11:16the last few years the 165 year old club has seen a steady decline in interest all right he's in a
11:23terrible stare and its ground has been left to rack and ruin doesn't really look like a cricket club
11:28does it as it stands now it just sorts of messed on it Fred is meeting Graham the team captain who's
11:38been struggling to keep the club afloat so what teams have you got now just one one senior team
11:45just one so no youth no women's yeah just a wall kids no kids there's not been a kids team since
11:51probably about 2000 early 2000s yeah well yeah not one not like it so no kids come down here and
11:59play on a Friday night or no no no nothing how many members you got we've got about nine or ten it's
12:07not a team that not a team so you've done well to get yeah keep it open in a shortage of hands yeah
12:13yeah so this is our main function room yeah um seen better days but yeah not too many weddings in you
12:21at the minute not in a minute so if you come through we've got cobwebs yeah the changing rooms
12:29no electricity electricity being cut off partly for danger um yeah cost as well
12:37i mind yeah there's water there you know wonderful oh yeah
12:42and then through here we go this gets a bit more real
12:45so you've got showers toilets as you can see oh wow look at this
12:55it's a job isn't it yeah it needs money and do it not i don't know if i want to
13:01which we're going to look at the ground yeah can do
13:06well you come from this it's a big place isn't it oh it's massive yeah yeah
13:09one of the biggest grounds in the northwest you can kind of picture what it could be
13:14he was immaculate you know he's one of the best wickets in the league that crowds all around you
13:19know it was thriving i'm guessing looking around here there's a lot of houses and things but yeah
13:27these people aren't engaged in coming here no no so as it stands now then there's nothing out
13:34no unless there's an injection or something that's how it's gonna stay that's how it's gonna stay
13:41it's not nice to see is it it's a place where kids should be coming and playing and it should
13:47be the hub of the community but you look at it and you can understand why people aren't coming can't
13:52you the doors are shut the gates are locked there's no pitch there's no teams but it's really sad
13:58like in the city cricket it's dying isn't it and we've got to do something that way
14:06because if something's not done very quickly this place is going to disappear like a lot of others
14:13and when you put it in those terms it's hard not to try and have a good crack at it
14:17imagine what a turn around this would be for the local area
14:26if freddie has any chance of saving the club he needs support from the local community
14:31we have to go to old school here don't we knock on doors and walk around streets and
14:35drum up support you know we want to do it we want to get a cricket club thriving again we want people
14:39coming down we want kids playing but it'll be dictated by if that's what the people around this place want
14:45um hiya sorry to bother you i'm fred i'm doing some work at the cricket club behind at newton
14:53eath i'm just trying to get people in the local community coming out and helping us clear it up
14:57a bit because it's a bit of a state i'm not surprised nothing's gone on there for such a long
15:02time i don't think anybody's given it any second thought well i wish you every look in the world thank
15:08you hopefully we'll see you down there we'll get you down there you never know this whole project
15:13depends on the community getting involved and wanting that cricket club to do well
15:18i just have to keep trying wouldn't i just keep knocking
15:22hiya i'm doing some work at newton eath cricket club trying to get all the teams going get the
15:26cricket club back have you got any kids here who would be interested in playing cricket yeah i've got
15:3015 year old well bring him down thanks very much see you later we need players
15:37i just hope there's some sort of appetite what's she on the bag there you're doing right aren't you
15:44you're from newton eath yeah i'm trying to get kids from this area playing cricket i don't think
15:49it's a good idea no one's going to go are you all right i want to get that club going again i'm going
15:54to get teams i'm going to get it thriving and do you think it could work no no no why this is boring
16:01it's just dawning on me actually the the magnitude of what we're trying to do and how big a scale
16:07and this is just one of them this is newton eep we're going to boot one back pool as well
16:11but i do like a challenge but is this one that i've a bit and a bit too much off here
16:15i do right
16:17i'm fred
16:20nice with you all right yeah tell me oh he's going off now he's going to burn me isn't he
16:29you know the cricket club back here yeah i'm trying to get it going again
16:35it's got a lot of history behind it but in recent years it's just gone to dogs yeah well you've got
16:38michael aback who's captain of england yeah i played with him yeah and i used to play there yeah so
16:43oh yeah you're next ticket yeah i used to play a bit yeah okay that's good yeah we're doing a clear
16:50up if you fancy getting some fresh air i'm gonna go start clearing it up a bit think about that no
16:54you're gonna stick to your snooker and a pint all right i'll leave you to it cheers
16:59it looks like it's shut nobody knows anything about it hopefully through word of mouth it'll start
17:03spreading thanks so much i'll see you later see you later thank you it's a real reality check you know
17:10because it's gone well recently and now just diving back in even deeper you know he said if
17:18they build it they'll come something like that at the minute we're not built no one's coming
17:30with freddie and manchester 50 miles away in blackpool england cricketer kate cross is back to help
17:37kyle try and train the girls into a match ready team i think tonight maybe introduce a hard ball
17:43what do you reckon be interesting to see how they cope with that because i know a lot of females get
17:47put off from cricket when it goes to from softball to hardball but if we're going to play some games
17:52they're going to actually have to get used to a hard ball at some point right why did i lose my
17:58okay well my grief would be green but my lips would be red i have all each what is the actual one it is
18:07hard do not throw this at somebody whatever you do it is hard the first girls to face the hard ball
18:13are both newcomers to the game 17 year old maddie and 16 year old summer helmets you need helmets
18:20ready ready can we have everyone watching the balls please are you ready kids and if you get hit
18:29you get hurt oh no here we go oh okay mama just got hit with a ball all right quite bad actually
18:45okay that was horrendous that was horrendous right dangerous it'll hurt for like 30 more seconds and
18:53then it goes she got hit with a ball i don't want to play my way good i'm not playing
19:08all right you're all right summer just a bit of a sting the first one's always the worst
19:17go on then these hard balls oh my god they hurt they hurt even catching it hurts
19:27um yeah maybe i mean i think we had to introduce a cricket ball to them just so they knew what it is
19:34don't eat me too fast mate too fast if we're going to play a game we're going to use a hard ball so
19:43it's it's a tough one to know what to do really don't kill me don't want to die today
19:52um might have to rethink our rethink how we're going to approach it for next session
19:57summer hey girlie what are you doing what are you doing can you come and join back please no please
20:09no just bowling without you i've got phs dig well we can do some bowling together no bowling it's not
20:16i'm good come and join you're doing well aren't you no you actually are summer come on me and kyle
20:31or freddie can say whatever we think's the right thing but actually if it comes from each other or
20:35comes from one of their teammates they seem to listen a little bit more i feel like the camaraderie
20:41in the team is actually what's going to drag them along
20:48people on three two one we're all going to cheer
20:54three two one
21:02summer come on summer come on
21:09come on mate you've got this one ball and that's it right come on you've got it come on ball you've got it
21:14well done well done then you brought her back from the dead i know right that was brilliant what did
21:23you say to her i don't know i actually don't know that's it bring the stomps in
21:29what's the dog shit
21:47shut up you absolute muppet
21:50it's never a dull day on grange is it no you stormed off didn't you yeah i had my moment
22:03because i thought i didn't want to do it but at the same time i do want to do it
22:07well what's the main reason why you don't want to do it it's just like really like
22:11boost my energy down not too confident yeah that would i don't know if i do want to go back but
22:18obviously it'd more it'll be the fact of letting freddie down letting your emotions win more like yeah
22:32with confidence affecting the girls in blackpool in manchester where freddie is hoping to create
22:38a third team there's been some good news all right thanks for coming all right thank you thanks for
22:44coming after weeks of spreading the word about his plan to restore newton heath cricket club some of
22:51the local community have turned up to help out it's the start isn't it everyone's just getting
22:59involved and mucking in makes you think actually we're doing something that people want but despite
23:04progress being made outside one of the longest serving members of the club john
23:11is keen to show freddie that things have got even worse inside oh wow look at this this is the
23:17kitchen area now which you can see the water egresses i'm not sure that's going to help and
23:23safety no i don't think you can cook in there no no look at it so this just happened this is a yeah
23:29it's a bit weather it's a flat roof needs repairing so i can see you since last time i've been in yeah it's
23:36got worse yeah so what what is the plan then what is the plan for the plan is to get cricket back on
23:42here how though well we're depending on yourself in many ways thank you
23:50we want you we want you i think basically we're we're on our knees really we're on our knees sometimes
24:04all you i found this in my career you got it rock bottom before you can start going back up
24:10it sounds like this is rock bottom here now isn't it look at the kitchen and the ground and everything
24:15i think it would be criminal to let this facility disappear i agree okay just need a start don't
24:22it yeah this is what's today today you got all these people haven't you never gonna go on there
24:29as well as volunteers kids from the local area have turned up to help out
24:33well fred nice to meet you uh dominic all right thanks for coming we'll go and join him fred nice
24:39to meet you nice to meet you go and mingle in and thanks so much thanks for coming you
24:43you had cricketers no it's your sport just football football what else you do i don't really play
24:48football that much but what would you do with yourself then just go out chill you say you chill what
24:53doing what what would you do and your mates do just go out and see them and do what just chill it's a bit
24:59dead nowadays isn't it is it dead yeah it's just nothing to do nowadays what's it like
25:05speak like you speak like the youth and that the youth yeah yeah what's wrong with them
25:12are you rough a couple of guns yeah a couple of rough stuff going on like my boy got stabbed like
25:17seven months ago today did he yeah i knew i knew the person that stabbed him and the person that died
25:22didn't i was both close we're friends with them and everything so it's a bit i was close with both of
25:26him but it's just just life in it like there's nothing you can do about it seriously yeah it
25:32depends where you're putting yourself though yeah you'll put yourself in areas where you're susceptible
25:37to it yeah but you're born into the area yeah but my thought is with this person is if we create
25:42something where people can come enjoy themselves in the safe good for everyone yeah yeah do you fancy
25:49getting involved there we get it going joining the cricket team it's semi a posh sport though yeah it was a
25:55posh sport but trying to change it what everyone's play everyone have a chance yeah we'd love you to
25:59come yeah it's great to meet you hopefully we'll see you again you're gonna come aren't you yeah bring
26:05your mates as well yeah yeah don't worry all right feel free to pick some litter up if you want as well
26:09but you might not get much in your bag thank you cheers boys have a nice day thank you
26:16all right cricket's a tough sell for them but that's the type of as we want you know so give
26:24these boys a chance more i speak to people this place is crying out for somewhere that people can go
26:30to and it seems that cricket is it's probably secondary the cricket club is the hook and then hopefully from
26:39there it can expand into more of a social club where they say and we can get kids off the streets
26:47there is a crack in the wall right okay yeah you can see where it's all coming down off the flat roof
26:52into the gutter to give freddy an idea of the work needed to restore the club he's asked manchester
26:58council to come down and conduct a site survey what have you found we think we've got some subsidence
27:04along all the back wall it recommended that we have an asbestos survey done so they'll come in
27:10probably next week and then also we've got a flat roof connecting this part of the building to
27:16the bit with the function rooms and that is leaking yeah it's a mess yeah and it's quite dangerous
27:23so that's what's the cost then you reckon so we were looking the region of about 300 000 for
27:29refurbishing what we've got and then if we were going to demolish and start again
27:34then it would be in the region of 8 850 something like that you're at 15 000 right so what's your
27:40advice we haven't got any money specifically but this is about using contractors and reaching out
27:46to them we need to identify all the the needs and the requirements of what we need to do for
27:50the next few months what sort of time frames do you envisage i think to be brutally honest we need
27:58two to three months to get a planning application together and then we've got another three months to get
28:03um the application submitted and hopefully approved before we should be putting six months before
28:10anything happens if we're going to do a new build option yeah right so it's quite a long process
28:19isn't it today's a start it's a start but i'm very impatient very impatient thank you thank you
28:29thanks very much i was hoping there give us a few solutions but just give us six months six months
28:35and we can do something it's a club on its knees something needs doing now and he's doing fast
28:42it has to happen before the end of the summer has to
28:49with plans for his manchester club looking more and more complicated
28:54let's get your head down freddy's headed back to his boys team in liverpool
29:00there you go but only six have turned up for tonight's training
29:04i reckon you can hit that harder commit to it commit to it where's ryan tonight
29:11you've got to be doing anything yeah him and stevie what with stevie
29:16i'm gonna be doing anything one more one more and swap over and kev can get a drink
29:24there's not too many here tonight is there um
29:28it is disappointment it would be nice if everyone was here you know they are a team and they've played a
29:33game and they've been showing signs of improving yeah it's hard because things are going to be
29:38against us but i think it drives you on doesn't it to think this is important we have to keep trying
29:44just to give these kids a chance of playing cricket yes lad one of the oldest boys on the team who has
29:51turned up for training his 17 year old local lad michael oh hey it's a battle
30:00that will follow that but you want your weight coming through yeah yeah so you want your weight
30:06forward so it all starts with your head self
30:09nice one fred sport's always been like a part of my life
30:13just keeping me in check a good few times really just a safe a safe place safe place to go
30:18it's a nice thing about that michael it's fun but you've hit with the spin yeah yeah when i
30:27hit the bat i felt this you hit with it yeah i felt the spin off the bat as well
30:33i've always lived in bootle it's just a mental place let's say it is a rough little area like
30:38and the gang culture is a big big thing in bootle like doing cricket and being with freddie
30:47coming at a good time because i feel like the age you're at from 17 to 18 is quite a hard year i
30:53think and i feel like it's been a bit of a distraction for me for just being able to go and play
30:58great for an hour or two that's what michael come on there we go that's bad i'll take that for me
31:04last one that was a good man great effort freddie's decided that after training he wants to find out
31:13how being part of the team is helping michael first how are you finding the cricket it was you
31:19enjoy there yeah how come how come you wanted to do it in the first place it's just an opportunity
31:23really opportunity to excel weren't it so yeah take it with both hands you're obviously from
31:29around you tell us a bit about it's quite rough like is it in what way the road seven here get
31:37caught in the air the wrong side of things been in a quite been in quite deep to be honest like have
31:42you yeah how does that all start just wanting to do better really you know what i mean you think
31:49oh yeah it's the high life it's the good life life out there smoking weed your mates and then you're
31:54going home when your man she finds your bag of weed and stuff like that it just causes arguments and
31:58then it's it's just that's just a nightmare quite bad really and when you started doing this what was
32:07your mid-team early teens yeah well 13 14 14 was it just really it doesn't even ruin your life you
32:13think it's doing good for you but it's not it's what it's doing to other people around you know what i mean
32:17like you just hate me ma big time it wasn't really fair my mom and dad because they've like took me
32:24and looked after me from a baby if you're getting me so you said from a baby so you yeah so they're
32:30like not like biological parents yeah they're like my uncle and auntie real me yeah so if you don't mind
32:37me asking them what yeah yeah me mom me mom passed away like when i was like six months old she like killed
32:46just oh i'm sorry i'm sorry i didn't i didn't expect it yeah yeah yeah she yeah she stopped
32:53i don't like me mom and then i got put into care what when you was a baby yeah when i was a baby and
32:58then your mom and dad now like oh my god i called my dad and auntie and uncle they then they've taken me
33:05so doing all that to them what i've done was wrong because it was like
33:09shit they've done for you lads you know what i mean and yeah you talk to your mom and dad now about
33:14you as a kid as a kid i was quite like i feel like that's where i was a bit of a loose cannon and
33:20went down certain ways and stuff like that because i didn't really know who i was myself in a way if you
33:25get me because that was like a big question to me and like was it my fault or you know what i mean
33:30just a little like my stuff like that really because it is it is quite a uh a horrible way to
33:35go really isn't it it is it's the worst way to go suicide yeah yeah so what to sound weird but i was
33:41angry towards him yeah yeah i think i think my opinion like suicide's changed over the years
33:51for a few reasons one i've had friends me i've done it actually one quite recent sorry to hear that no it's
33:57fine um but so i still went up i saw i saw with depression i had an accident 18 months ago and
34:05i've known to be like i didn't want to kill myself but i didn't want to be alive that make sense
34:11i didn't know if i had it in me yeah it's just and then yeah and then it also actually had been
34:17quite reflective actually when we met recently is that i always thought it was selfish and i was
34:24stuck there's a way out but then actually i've come to understand it a little bit more now if
34:30there's a level which there is underneath where i felt and you can go lower i actually really understand
34:38it yeah so what is it you want to do now just keep going and just keep doing being even keep doing
34:46well for myself yeah but yeah you've got all these reasons to be successful and do well i think the
34:56biggest one is for you as well you know what i mean everyone that tries to please and do this with
35:00other people but i think you need to do it yourself and what you've been through and what you've
35:05experienced you deserve it you know what i mean you've got plenty to offer so much all of these
35:12that's a scouting
35:16he's dealt with so much in such a young life he's only 17 and i think everyone is um guilty of being
35:24judgmental um whether it's kids and their behavior or why kids hang around the streets or they're doing
35:31some of the things that are doing and the more time we've spent with these lads you realize actually
35:36there's reasons for people's behavior and that's that's the thing that needs to be tackled you know
35:42i think we've got positive role models for kids show them a different way show them the opportunities
35:47that they could have which we're we're trying to do by getting a group of boys or girls who believe
35:55they're a team giving them confidence a sense of belonging and ultimately trying to apply them
36:02things into their lives we just got to prove it works we've got to prove it's right and it does make
36:10a difference who's confident of practicing with the hardball in blackpool freddy's hoping the girls will
36:22soon be ready to play their first ever match so if you're confident you can go in the net but some
36:28of the team are still struggling to get to grips with the hard ball don't want them you know not
36:34coming to cricket because they're scared of getting hurt but we also need to realize that if we're going
36:38to play a match it's going to be a hard ball so it's it's a tricky one at the moment right get yourself
36:42a back i don't want to put them in a game against another team and embarrass them i want to compete i want
36:47to feel confident in what they're doing if it goes well it could bring some confidence out of them
36:53but on the flip side of that though if it goes badly and embarrass themselves it could be back to
36:58square one oh my ass cheek do you think i am a professional this feels like we're not progressing at
37:11we're not we're even better than this on the first week but it's not just the hard ball affecting the
37:20team go on molly no do it properly oh molly mate do it properly i beg oh sorry don't don't get lippy
37:26me oh short maddie you can't tell i'm not in the mood oh shut up go on you know what i can't be
37:34arsed in a bit don't be giving me mouth please me i can't be arsed can we just play a bit of cricket
37:39stupid ain't you the stupid cow i really just don't want to seem to fall apart
37:47i'm sick of bitchiness and drama and girls and blah blah blah when you're playing a game you have to
37:55get on like everyone has to get on and right now that's not happening well i don't think we're a team at
38:01the moment at all yeah no i reckon we just get rid of her we don't need her with the girls it's
38:10different a lot more emotional than the boys and that seems to be surfacing quite a bit but they're
38:16struggling with a bit of confidence but then one thing which is a bit more worrying is there's been a
38:21bit of falling out different friendship groups people getting young with one another that's that's
38:27that's the funny thing about sport and in particular cricket you know you even with
38:31england you get put together a group of people that i reckon unless you play cricket you would never
38:37meet but just respect them just learn how to get along you don't have to be best to merge with people
38:46it seems to be a bit falling out is that fair what is it about the two of you that clashes
38:51you just don't like each other don't like each other you don't try with each other how can you
38:58solve it because the problem is with you two such strong characters is if you're kicking off or not
39:04getting on i think it's going to affect everyone i don't actually know you think there's a world in
39:10which the two of you get on no why we never get on why i don't know about trying
39:18you don't have to get on best of mates but you can respect each other can't you yeah
39:26try and not row and kick off and just be teammates yeah
39:38they just can't keep going as they are can they we're meant to be trying to be closer as a team so
39:43we can then put in matches and we can do more things but if they keep kicking off with each other
39:47that's not a possibility at the minute with problems mounting in blackpool freddy's headed
39:55back to manchester where he's hoping to create his third team and restore newton heath cricket club
40:01to its former glory it's been about a month since we were here and last time there's all sorts going
40:08on we had the clear up didn't we so people had turned out there were people in bushes picking
40:12litter up doing every little bit they can i'm coming back you can see nothing's been done you know
40:20the ground just keeps growing the clubhouse is just getting slowly worse it's just been left
40:26it seems at the minute everything's just come to a halt at this place
40:30keen to find out what's been happening freddy's catching up with john
40:34hi john one of the club's trustees there's a problem with the the lease freddy the lease
40:43has has gone missing we've spoken to solicitors we've received advice off them and we're going to act
40:49on what's the advice find the least well that's the first one this is the original uh lease which was
40:58from 1859 it's written in old english and it mentions sport in there but it doesn't actually
41:07mention newton heath cricket club so we we need to find the lease but you don't know where that is
41:15at this moment is misplaced right it's one thing after another isn't it if you don't get it resolved
41:22no it will be resolved no it will be well i don't say you won't john yeah but it's again it's time
41:30isn't it it is time yeah that's the issue yeah the way i understand it is if we don't sort this lease
41:37out now everything we're doing is in jeopardy in some ways it's not even a it's a non-starter yes
41:47we fully understand that and the the need to get that sorted asap
41:54we don't even know if you've got the ground we don't know where we stand you can't then go to
41:57people asking them to help or give money but why would anybody do that if you've not got a lease
42:04yeah this is just becoming far harder than i ever imagined it's just barrier after barrier it's just
42:12obstacles everywhere also as well i'm i'm gonna go and try and get a team tonight you know we've put
42:18an open session out for people to turn up and come and try cricket hopefully come and join the club
42:24but what are they joining with the clubhouse at newton heath still not fit for purpose
42:31tonight's tryouts for freddy's third team are being held at an established cricket club in north
42:36manchester is it just us two no it's gonna be about it's gonna be more of you no i don't think
42:42there is a couple more come in lads how are you all right cheers lads think about this is it's meant
42:51to be a try out but whoever comes is in you know it's not like a trial it's not how good you are at
42:56cricket if you turn up we'll have you right here you go yeah i'm just looking over there's another
43:06one there yeah i think with everything going on at the club and all the problems i think this is
43:15probably even more important now you know if you're gonna say what there's people waiting to play
43:19do you think i'll be the next freddy flint's off
43:28hiya kyle nice to meet you you too nice to meet you are you all right let's get out on grass come on lads
43:37great shot which one of them presley presley what a name that is like elvis isn't it my hero elvis
43:45you all right thanks for Fred you all right all right all right all right come join us come join us
43:50be coming all right first i'm fred this is kyle um i just want to thank everyone for turning up
43:56today and coming down throw yourselves into it whatever standard whatever level encourage each
44:01other and have some fun it's not the hardest game in the world you've got to throw a ball catch
44:05a ball and hit a ball all right kyle yeah should get going head over to the nets in the corner
44:11we'll do a bit of batting and bowling use these balls you know they're quite soft it's not going
44:15to hurt or anything if you've never bowled before think of a windmill this bowling arm imagine a
44:22windmill coming over that's going towards the batter just have a go see what happens yeah
44:28yeah yeah bounce once yeah like this here he is come on has
44:32what you've got oh boy what is that now one more one more because that was nothing 11 boys have
44:39turned up for the tryouts but some have never even picked up a cricket bat before
44:47one up down over
44:49one up it's okay it's okay it's okay it's okay i can't control it so much harder than it looks
44:58i've got i can't control it it's varying degrees of ability but it's all foul come on presley come on
45:07they're trying the nuts off aren't they
45:10freddy chuck a ball for me please yeah well let's see what you've got
45:14you've got 16 year old presley is no stranger to sport but he's never been part of a cricket team
45:22i'm pretty cocky in sports and stuff but it's the word to be you know i mean confidence is key
45:27most important thing you these yeah watch it as hard as you can send it my favorite thing to do is
45:36going fishing because i'm not old enough to go to another pond so that's where that's my pub the pond
45:42i don't know teach me how to cricket i'll teach me how to play fish
45:49you ready here we go i'm used to doing it with plastic yeah then what it's more heavier i'm
45:58blame i'm blaming the uh equipment until i get better get yourselves a drink i'm knackered i'm dying now
46:06yeah it's hard isn't it freddy yeah honestly i thought cricket was a lazy sport me until i played
46:12then all right lazy sport yeah what do you usually do you spare time no i just chill at home like i go
46:18fishing now and then what do you fish for cop yeah yeah how big do you want to tell you a lie
46:25no that catching decent 10 13 pounds yeah have many of you played cricket no no is everyone enjoying
46:35it though yeah it's good yeah good hey fancy doing more yeah yeah
46:43do you know the nicest thing after the day i've had i'm going to newton eve
46:48and listen to john's tale of war and leases and pitches you know i was expecting tonight nothing
46:56but it was a good turnout the nicest thing was we talk about putting a team together
47:02because you get a load of lads they've got nothing in common really and you just lump together
47:07and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't but definitely from what i've seen tonight that is the
47:12makings of a team do you want to catch a car for now i've caught roach brain
47:20i think it was brilliant oh everyone comes back made a couple of mates uh exchange numbers and that
47:27well we're gonna talk tell me always to kiss the fish for good luck my breath must have stunk
47:32hopefully everyone gets better and we'll just start being the best that we can the dream team
47:46there's so many things that need doing there's so many obstacles but when you see what's just
47:51happen there you think yeah we'll have to have a go at this we have to do it does anyone know what
48:09we're doing in blackpool freddy's still keen for the girls to play their first match as soon as
48:16possible so in a last ditch attempt to bring them together as a team he's taking them away from the
48:22cricket pitch and into the countryside to try and fix the rift in the group one of the things we want
48:29from him is to become a team a proper team and work together i don't want to bond with any of you
48:35i don't want to bomb a group god hopefully when we leave today they become closer as a team and we
48:41can take that into the matches and what lies ahead of us it sounds very easy doesn't it putting white
48:47suits on building a raft cold water what could possibly go around how's the bus trip it was a nightmare
48:58come on where are we going what are we doing i'm seeing lake look at this how nice is this
49:05yeah we actually i don't like raf building
49:16one of the things i want to work on today is becoming a proper team working with each other
49:21communicating with each other and spending time possibly with people you don't spend too much
49:25time with within the group go and get your wetsuits off you go oh there's a snail on my coat
49:33i already feel like there's going to be like so many dramas and i'm not in the mood for it
49:38hopefully it will benefit us and not make it worse right the help is with this top
49:46right so under there is everything that you're going to need to build these rafts what i'm going to do
49:50now i'm going to split into two different teams what team a maddie summer amy carla and mila i'm not
49:58happy with you guys right come on in your teams i don't want to be in this group it's interesting
50:03isn't it straight away someone wouldn't be in that group it's not the people she knocks around with
50:07but that's the whole purpose of today honestly when i played i hated anything like this
50:14it's a spider i didn't like building a raft but then you've got to realize other people do and i
50:19didn't at times we're in it together haven't we yeah oh there's poo ah my toe i don't know what you're
50:25both teams have been given an hour to build their rafts before testing them out on the lake right
50:31over where yeah like that they're getting wrong with water you better got to do it proper there is a
50:36consequence they're not getting involved here yeah right are we lifting up a corner each then oh max
50:42somewhere kick that one under thanks we need to flip it look at theirs they haven't flipped it yes they
50:50have yes they have yes they have no they have yes they've flipped the thing look at look at the long
50:56long going across there it doesn't matter they've flipped the thing oh no what's happened i think there's

53:29People want to know who we are, who we are, where we come from, where we come from, so we tell them, so we tell them, we're from Blackpool, we're from Blackpool, the mighty, mighty Blackpool, the mighty, mighty Blackpool.
53:53Today's been perfect.
53:56It was so fun.
53:59And I think it's built our confidence back up from when the last time we all had drama.
54:07Yeah, we've grown a lot closer together.
54:11It's just hilarious.
54:13It was so good.
54:19It was incredible, wasn't it?
54:21They got in the water, they were enjoying it, everyone's smiling, everyone's laughing, helping each other, everything that we could have expected.
54:27It was a good day, good day.
54:40I think it has helped us bond as a team.
54:56We've all got, like, more comfortable with each other, so if we need any help, we'll just ask for the help.
55:00To be fair, I got on with Molly quite good today and I was quite shocked.
55:05It's all about team building, to be fair, isn't it, and just getting on.
55:07I've really enjoyed it here and I hope you have.
55:12Yeah, pushing you off, yeah, that was the best part.
55:15The pleasing part for myself and Kyle is that when you turned up off that bus, you saw what you were going to do, and there were so many people saying,
55:24Oh, we're going there, don't want to build a raft, I don't want to do this, that and the other.
55:29And then every single one of you bought into it, and every one of you worked together.
55:33This is the first time I thought, actually, we've got a cricket team here.
55:40You're talking to people you don't necessarily spend a lot of time with within the team.
55:44And for me, I've got to say, I'm so proud of you, and you should be so proud of yourselves as well.
55:52I even managed to try not to smile again.
55:55Molly might crack one in a minute.
55:57We feel like a proper team right now.
55:59That is a team.
56:06Everything that we hoped for from today happened.
56:10That'll put us in good stead going into a cricket match.
56:13They've come so far.
56:15They should be proud of themselves tonight.
56:16I think, you know, me and Kyle are definitely.
56:19We're the only two masked lesbians on here.
56:21That's you, not me.
56:22Are you joking? You're a masked lesbian.
56:24I'm not a lesbian.
56:25Yes, you are.
56:26There's no possible way you're straight, Molly.
56:28I'm not a lesbian.
56:31What is this?
56:34You're out.
56:36Oh, mate, fuming.
56:38Got to run, you hit it.
56:39Doing three hasn't made it three times harder.
56:41It's almost made it ten times harder.
56:44All we want is just a team to play with.
56:48Who are they after, please?
56:49Someone's getting nicked.
56:52I ain't coming in here.
56:54Take it back up.
56:55Take it back up.
