00:00debate. The plight of pavement parking affects all of our constituencies and as we've heard
00:04causes particular distress for pedestrians with young children, disabilities or sight loss.
00:10But the statistics we've heard today are frankly shocking, aren't they? So we've heard that 65%
00:16of residents want councils to take on these powers, 73% of disabled residents. We heard 80%
00:23of parents would be more likely to walk to school if there wasn't pavement parking and I heard that
00:2893% of local councils have had complaints from members of the public on this issue. In my
00:33constituency of Shrewsbury the issue crops up time and again. We have some beautiful historic streets
00:38which can be narrowed to navigate and we are blessed with a mature population who want to stay fit and
00:43healthy and walk into our beautiful town centre but increasingly it's become dangerous and the
00:47pavements are not safe. I'm contacted by residents severely affected on Bell Lane, Torrin Drive and
00:53New Park Road but I would like members to hear directly from residents on Whitmore Road. They
00:57say, we live a few doors down from Mount Pleasant Primary School. It's become an absolute nightmare
01:02and it's so dangerous. They park on footpaths anywhere they can, blocking drives and access to
01:07other larger vehicles trying to get through. The state of the footpaths is terrible due to the
01:12weight of some of the cars. I've tried the council but they say it's up to the police and the police
01:16tell me it's up to the council. Who is responsible? And until we get clarity from our government,
01:21that's the question.
