00:00Max. All right, Tyler, thanks. Back to your Colts Blue Zone now. The Horseshoe dominating the Miami Dolphins and Lucas Oil today, winning their first season opener since 2013.
00:09CBS4 Sports Director Chris Webley joining us in the studio with a breakdown of the game. A lot to be happy with today.
00:14Impressive on both sides of the field, Max. A new season always brings new hope. And for the Colts, a new ownership regime.
00:21Hanging over them, that ugly opening day winless streak reaching past a decade, the longest drought in the National Football League.
00:28Well, special opener dedicated to a special man as well. Jim Irsay inducted in the Lucas Oil Stadium Ring of Honor.
00:35Colts trying to make him proud, came out on fire. Daniel Jones connects with Michael Bittman Jr.
00:40A beautiful TD pass. Jones first as a Colt. It's 10-0. And the new defense delivered as well.
00:47Three takeaways. Layoutu Latu with his first NFL interception. The Colts scoring 17 points off Miami Mistakes.
00:53And Danny Dimes was spot on. Along with the TD toss, he runs in for two more touchdowns.
01:00And ding-dong, the skin is dead. The Colts dominate the Dolphins 33-8.
01:06Great team win. Everybody in that locker room, every coach, every player.
01:11For the preparation that goes into it to play the way we did, complementing football on both sides of it for four quarters was awesome.
01:21We weren't surprised, but like I said, now the challenge is to grow with it, build, and, you know, continue to develop as a team, as an offense.
01:28Well, after all those losses and that dreadful tie to open the season over these last 12, 13 years, I didn't think we'd ever get to this point.
01:37It had to break sometime.
01:39Yeah.
01:39Finally, and it's Daniel Jones that got the job done.
01:41Yeah, we're happy to see it. He was a big, I mean, nobody, everyone sort of going into this didn't really know what it was going to look like, and it turned out pretty well.
01:48He was very impressive.
01:49Had full control of that offense, 270 yards, three touchdowns. If he can keep that rolling, this team's got a real shot.
01:56All right, let's hope so. All right, we're going to check back in with Chris in just a little bit. Thanks so much, Chris.
02:00Well, hey, another big part of today's game, honoring the legacy of late owner and CEO Jim Ursae, who died this past May at the age of 65.
02:08Fans at the game were gifted special T-shirts that read, For the Boss, in honor of Mr. Ursae.
02:13At halftime, he was inducted into the Ring of Honor with other inductees, including star quarterback Peyton Manning there in attendance for him.
02:20Players and coaches also wore patches with his initials, J.I., on their uniforms.
02:25And the fans also able to do that same thing, sporting J.I. pins and patches themselves.
02:30The fans told us, though, today wasn't the same without him there.
02:34I also met Jim Ursae here in Touchdown Town a few times.
02:37He's a great person.
02:39You know, great personality, always full of energy.
02:42Man, just lots of energy.
02:44He helped the blue crew out a lot of times.
02:46But my favorite remember to Jim was when we had a blue crew member and lost everything in a fire two weeks before Christmas.
02:54Jim stepped up and made Christmas happen for those blue crew members.
02:59And as we mentioned, Whitlick's going to have much more reaction from the game than the locker room.
03:04That's coming up a little bit later in sports.
03:06The Golds ended opening day with an exclamation point and a win over the Dolphins.
03:15Thanks for joining us at 11.
03:16I'm Nadja Woods.
03:17As our Brad Brown explains, it was all for the boss.
03:21From Touchdown Town to the Terrace level inside Lucas Oil Stadium, today was a day to honor the boss.
03:26When someone says the word yes, it's a conscious choice.
03:32For Jim Ursae, that word came often.
03:35And each time it did, it was to help this team win.
03:38Sunday marking the first Colts game day since the passing of team owner Jim Ursae.
03:42And a day to induct the man behind the horseshoe into the ring of honor.
03:46Colts Nation, thank you for your support these past months.
03:51Our dad loved you.
03:52It brought him the utmost pride and joy to be the steward of this franchise that has brought us all the Lombardi Trophy,
04:02so many winning seasons, and what brings us all together.
04:06More than a dozen other Ring of Honor members on hand, Super Bowl champions, Hall of Famers,
04:11all to honor the man that poured his life into the franchise.
04:15We could feel Jim's commitment every day.
04:17His office was in the facility.
04:19He was in the locker room after games, both home and away.
04:23He loved the Colts, the horseshoe, and that was the kind of owner every player dreams of playing for.
04:29Ursae being remembered here not just for his love of football, but his passion for the Indianapolis community,
04:34and a legacy that will be felt well beyond so many Sundays.
04:38He bound us all together.
04:40His legacy roars with every one of you.
04:43There is no place Jim Ursae belongs more than right here in the Colts' Ring of Honor.
04:50The Colts brought today full circle with a big win over the Dolphins.
04:53We'll show you how that unfolded coming up a little later in the show.
04:56WRTV's Lauren Schwanker was out among the fans today with more on the celebration of Mr. Ursae all over the Circle City.
05:03I'm WRTV's Lauren Schwanker.
05:05Downtown is covered in blue.
05:06I talked with many fans who were excited to honor Mr. Ursae's legacy as we took on the season opener against the Dolphins.
05:13I'm feeling amazing.
05:15I'm so excited this is our year.
05:16Got blue.
05:17Jim Ursae, thank you for all you've done, baby.
05:21Honoring Jim Ursae.
05:22He brought a lot of money to the city.
05:24And bringing home a win.
05:25Go Colts!
05:26Yes, baby!
05:27Every home game for the last 30 years.
05:29We're feeling pretty confident.
05:31Our defense looks pretty good this year.
05:33Daniel Jones, I'm hoping for the best for him.
05:35Colts fans brought the energy downtown Sunday.
05:38Let's go Colts!
05:40We are excited.
05:42From favorite players, Johnson Taylor, let's go!
05:46Obviously it's JT. I'm looking for him to go full beast mode.
05:49I'd probably say Taylor and Downs is my favorite player.
05:52And people traveling from all over.
05:54I flew in just to see the Dolphins play.
05:56This is our first game.
05:58This is our first game.
05:58Fence up!
05:59It was a game to remember.
06:00We love to tailgate, but this is our first time hosting and it turned out awesome.
06:04And as we bring home the W, people are echoing the same chant.
06:07Go Colts!
06:08Go Colts!
06:08Go Colts!
06:10Go Colts!
06:11Reporting in Indianapolis, I'm Lauren Schwenker, WRTV.
06:15Well, total domination.
06:16The Colts honor their late owner, Jim Irsay, by winning their first season opener in what felt like a lifetime.
06:22We'll show you what happened and get reactions from the victorious locker room.
06:26And playoff pressure.
06:28A fever win on the road today would clinch a postseason berth.
06:31Could the banged up squad make it happen?
06:34Highlights and reactions.
06:35Right ahead.
06:35How would you feel if your injury case settled for $5,000 and later found out that your case was really worth $200,000?
06:46Not all lawyers are the same and the insurance companies know it.
06:49Some lawyers are happy with tiny checks, but not Ken Nunn.
06:53Ken Nunn is a real Indiana fighter who always fights for the big check.
06:58Just remember, the lawyer who cuts corners can end up costing you a lot of money.
07:03Call Ken Nunn.
07:05Over a billion dollars collected for our clients.
07:11On a day when the Colts honored team owner Jim Irsay, they also came away with one of their more impressive performances of recent memory.
07:182013 was the last time this team won on week one.
07:22Today, it's one for Jim and 1-0 with a 33-8 win over Miami.
07:27Great team win.
07:29Everybody in that locker room.
07:31Every coach, every player, I'm excited for the city, this organization, you know, to get this first win at home.
07:38You know, with Mr. Irsay going into the ring of honor, it was only fitting to get that done today.
07:41The biggest question entering week one for the Colts was with Daniel Jones at quarterback.
07:45He earned the job in training camp and quickly looked comfortable behind center in Shane Steichen's offense.
07:51I thought we played well and the team played well.
07:53I think I've learned over the years, it's, you know, it's a long season, 17-game season, and you've got to play at a high level for the whole time.
08:04So, you know, good start.
08:06Jones was getting the ball of multiple receivers early.
08:09Jonathan Taylor with a couple double-digit gainers as well.
08:13Jones' TD pass to Michael Pittman Jr. opened the second quarter, but the Colts up 10-0.
08:17I think the offense, we just found ways, whether it was pass or whether it was run, I feel like our offensive line really just dominated up front.
08:27And once they do that, I mean, everything else kind of just flows.
08:31Jones completed 22 passes to seven different receivers.
08:34Rookie Tyler Warren led the list with seven grabs, many of those coming as an early spark for the Indy offense.
08:40I think we did a good job running the ball in the home run.
08:42Just as impressive was the Colts' defense.
08:52Coordinator Lou Hennarumo had his guys dialed in from the start.
08:56Camp Bynum's interception on the Dolphins' opening drive will be remembered just as much for his celebration after.
09:02I didn't know what he had plans to do.
09:03I didn't know what he was doing.
09:05I was just, like, sitting back, trying to do it.
09:06So, once he started doing the bouncing thing on the ground, I was like, yeah, let's go, let's go.
09:10It was the first of three takeaways on the day.
09:13Layatu Latu would come up with a pick in the third quarter as the Colts started to seal the game away quickly.
09:19You know, getting that ball and getting that takeaway, I mean, that's everything to us on the defense.
09:23So, you know, it feels really good to be able to, you know, produce and, you know, make a game-changer play.
09:2933-8 when it was all done.
09:31And the Colts' week one drought dating back to 2013 was finally over.
09:35But any time you can start off fast, 1-0, obviously against an AFC opponent, it's huge.
09:41So, it's good.
09:43Enjoy it tonight.
09:44But our focus has got to be on Denver coming up here.
09:46The Colts' 1-0 start will bring them back home next Sunday.
09:49Week two's matchup, we'll see the Denver Broncos coming here to the Circle City.
09:52The Fever have won their way into the WNBA playoffs with a dominant win on Sunday against the Mystics.
10:01The 94-65 blowout was capped by a 32-point showing in the fourth quarter.
10:06The Fever spread the scoring around with five, getting double figures.
10:09Ariel Powers with 15, J. Petty 13 off the bench, giving Indiana a boost from two players who have been late-season additions to the Wall Street.
10:17The ability for that group to step up will be key for any success in the postseason.
10:22Just being someone in this locker room, you never doubt yourself and what you're capable of, no matter what happens.
10:27I think the entire staff up to the head just made great decisions when people went down on who to bring in, the type of people to bring in.
10:34And that was really our mindset.
10:35We never doubted ourselves.
10:36We never doubted that we could be in the playoffs.
10:38Even if things looked like it got harder, for us, it was about sticking together.
10:41And I think through everything, you're able to see that.
10:43Let's play with joy.
10:43Let's play together regardless of who's on that floor.
10:46The Fever closed out the regular season at home on Tuesday against Minnesota.
10:49The Lynx had the league's best record and could also be the Fever's first-round opponent for the playoffs.
10:55But the bracket is not set just yet.
10:58The playoffs begin next Sunday.
11:00Brad Brown, WRTV Sports.
11:02Time for sports.
11:04I'm Chris Wigley.
11:05The Colts and their fans approached this new season with trepidation.
11:08Another new starting quarterback looking to resurrect his career.
11:12An opening day winless skid that dates back to 2013 and a franchise and ownership transition.
11:18You know what?
11:18Miami never knew what hit him.
11:20Peyton Manning in the Ring of Honor.
11:21Colts on hand on Jim Irsay's special day.
11:23Great to see him.
11:25Maybe some of that Manning magic rubbed off on Daniel Jones.
11:27He was excellent.
11:29Opening drive.
11:30Drops went into rookie Tyler Warren, who got seven balls for 71 yards.
11:34Colts up 3-0.
11:35And the newly aggressive Colts defensive press it to his poor pass.
11:39Picked off by newcomer Cam Bynum.
11:42Key of the unique celebrations.
11:44Gotta love this one.
11:44He called it the worm.
11:46That sets up a Jones to Michael Pittman scoring pass covering 27 yards.
11:5010-0.
11:51Jones successful going downfield.
11:54There were doubts.
11:55More problems for Tua.
11:56Kenny Moore with a strip sack.
11:59Look at him come off the edge.
12:00Newcomer Xavier Howard, former longtime Dolphin, there for the recovery.
12:04Three sacks for the Colts on the afternoon.
12:07The Colts would end the half with a DJ TD plunge.
12:11And it's 20-0 at the break.
12:14Couldn't get much better than that.
12:15But it did.
12:17Third quarter Dolphin's driving.
12:18It's Leatu Latu coming up with his first NFL interception.
12:22The Colts had three takeaways, scoring 17 points off of them.
12:26Indianapolis in complete control.
12:28And Shane Steichen knew it.
12:29A perfect three for three on fourth down conversions.
12:32The Colts grind out a nine-minute drive, ending with yet another Jones touchdown punch from a yard out.
12:38New owner Carly Ursa says, heck yes, this one's for you, Dad.
12:42Danny Dimes dominant.
12:44And the Colts put to rest what was a ridiculous 11-game season opening winless skid.
12:50Cruising with 33-8 destruction of Dolphin.
12:53Outgating Miami 418-211.
12:55The Colts scoring on every possession.
12:58That's the first time an NFL team has done that since 1978.
13:01That's about as good as it can get to kick off a new season.
13:04And as CBS 4th Dave Griffiths reports, all smiles for the horseshoe in the locker room.
13:11Points on every offensive drive.
13:13No points allowed until late in the fourth quarter.
13:16Complimentary football at its finest gives the Colts a season opening win.
13:20Defense, offense, we played together.
13:23And that's the first time we've done it, like, in a long time.
13:25So, it was really nice to see.
13:27Getting those takeaways by our defense was big.
13:30And then, like I said, it was just a great team win.
13:33The atmosphere in there with the fans was electric.
13:36It was just awesome.
13:37Shane Steichen's decision to roll with Daniel Jones at quarterback was the right one this Sunday.
13:4275% completions, 272 yards through the air, three total touchdowns.
13:48Jones' command of the offense was undeniable.
13:50We've had a lot of confidence based on our preparation and the work we've put in through training camp
13:55and kind of where we think we've grown and improved.
14:00You know, you always got to go out there and do it.
14:02The Colts defense was able to shut down the Dolphins in some ways that you might not have expected.
14:07Like the secondary, Nick Cross, Kenny Moore getting sacks.
14:10And the defensive lineman, Liatu Latu, picking the ball off.
14:13We all just want to, you know, give something to the team.
14:16And whenever your number is called, you want to, you know, do your best to execute that.
14:20And the reps throughout practice, that's what helps us build that confidence throughout the week.
14:25Keeps the offense guessing.
14:26You know, keeps them on their toes.
14:27And, you know, you don't know who's coming, you know, or who's dropping.
14:30So, that's a difference maker right there.
14:33And for the first time since 2013, the Indianapolis Colts are 1-0.
14:37We came out here and broke a 13-year curse, as people were saying.
14:42So, it's always great, you know.
14:44The team came out and we played for Jim.
14:46And, like, it just felt, like, really good to get out there and get this win.
14:51Indeed, it may be just one game.
14:53Still, nothing but good fives after week one.
14:56With the Colts, I'm Dave Griffiths.
14:59Bears shall let me.
15:00Weeknights at 5, 6, and 10.
15:02Only on Fox 59.
15:04For two decades, Indy's woken up with Jim.
15:08No hype, just accurate words.
15:10Jim O'Brien.

15:16This is Fox 59 Sports Overtime.
15:19Hello and welcome to Sports Overtime here on Fox 59.
15:21I'm Chris Hagan.
15:23What a celebration at Lucas Oil Stadium this afternoon.
15:26Horseshoe Legends on hand as the Colts honor the late Jim Ursae and aim to snap an inexplicable winless streak in week one games dating back to 2013.
15:38Peyton Manning, among those taking part in the ceremony to induct Mr. Ursae into the team's ring of honor.
15:44First possession.
15:45Daniel Jones looking like Peyton Manning.
15:48And how about Tyler Warren looking like Dallas Clark, who was also at the game, 21 yards to the rook.
15:54Warren three catches, 43 yards.
15:56The Colts get a field goal for the early lead, and then the defense was wreaking some havoc.
16:01Cam Bynet picks off Tua the first time the Dolphins have the ball.
16:05And check out his celebration.
16:07Colts cash in right away.
16:08Jones, beautiful pass to Michael Pittman, Jr., 27 yards, and it's 10-zip.
16:14Next Miami possession, another turnover.
16:17Kenny Moore crushes Tua, a ball is loose, and former Dolph or Xavier Howard recovers.
16:24What about Tyreek Hill?
16:25Well, not happy, to say the least.
16:28More Colts points.
16:29Jones plows into the end zone, three yards out.
16:32Colts add another field goal before the break and lead it 20-0 at the half.
16:38And the second, how about some more defense?
16:41Layatu Latu in the press box.
16:43I said, how did he catch that first career interception off of Tua?
16:47Leads to another field goal.
16:49Colts drain nine minutes of clock on their final touchdown drive.
16:53D.J. Giddens picks up the first down on fourth and two.
16:57Colts three for three on fourth downs.
16:59And then it's Jones again capping off the drive with a one-yard plunge.
17:03Carly Ursae-Gordon gives the signal for the referees.
17:06Yes, that is indeed a touchdown and a huge win for Jones and the Colts.
17:11How about this?
17:12They score all seven possessions.
17:14Hasn't been done this century.
17:1533-8, the final from Lucas Oil Stadium.
17:18And our Dave Griffiths is there.
17:20Points on every offensive drive.
17:23No points allowed until late in the fourth quarter.
17:26Complimentary football at its finest gives the Colts a season-opening win.
17:30Defense-offense, we played together.
17:32And that's the first time we've done it, like, in a long time.
17:35So, it was really nice to see.
17:37Getting those takeaways by our defense was big.
17:40And then, like I said, it was just a great team win.
17:43The atmosphere in there with the fans was electric.
17:46It was just awesome.
17:46Shane Steichen's decision to roll with Daniel Jones at quarterback was the right one this Sunday.
17:5275% completions, 272 yards through the air, three total touchdowns.
17:57Jones' command of the offense was undeniable.

18:05and kind of where we think we've grown and improved.
18:10You know, you always got to go out there and do it.
18:11The Colts' defense was able to shut down the Dolphins in some ways that you might not have expected.
18:16Like the secondary, Nick Cross, Kenny Moore getting sacks.
18:20And the defensive lineman, Liatu Latu, picking a ball off.
18:23We all just want to, you know, give something to the team.
18:25And whenever your number is called, you want to, you know, do your best to execute that.
18:30And the reps throughout practice, that's what helps us build that confidence.
18:34Keeps the offense guessing.
18:35You know, keeps them on their toes.
18:36And, you know, you don't know who's coming, you know, or who's dropping.
18:39So, that's the difference maker right there.

19:03Still, nothing but good vibes after week one.
19:06With the Colts, I'm Dave Griffiths.
19:08I'm Dave Griffiths.
