Walsall 1 Chesterfield 0 - George Bennett analysis
Transcript
00:00Good evening Savings Fandom inside the Bescott where Walsall have just emerged with a third successive 1-0 victory in League 2
00:08This time over Chesterfield at the Bescott
00:12It's four wins in all competitions if you include the 3-1 success against Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night
00:20And it was Daniel Carnot with his first Walsall goal in the 43rd minute which inspired the Sadlers to maximum points
00:30Great finish, brilliant tenacity showing to steal the ball just outside the box
00:34And he picked his head up and buried an unerring finish into the far bottom corner
00:38And Walsall have really edged that first half by that stage anyway
00:42There were not many chances in the game whatsoever
00:46But in terms of half chances Aidan Flint headed one wide inside the first two minutes
00:51Harrison Burke also sent a looping header onto the roof of the net
00:57And then Charlie Lakin also nodded wide of the near post
01:00So in terms of those chances Walsall definitely had the better of things
01:04Chesterfield did have a spell where they were on top just after the half hour mark
01:10But that was really tamed by Walsall's opener
01:14And then in the second half also had to show a completely different side to themselves
01:18Charlie Lakin after some really good hold-up play stung by Aaron Presley
01:23Stung the palms of Chesterfield goalkeeper Zach Hemming
01:27But yeah, I mean, you know, the referee at times
01:31I don't like to be too critical of the officials
01:33But it felt as if he had lost control of the game
01:36There was one challenge from Connor Barrett where he appeared to win the ball when he was booked
01:40Matt Sadler felt that, you know, the incorrect decision was reached for Charlie Lakin's first yellow card
01:48Which was just by the dugout
01:49And then for the second yellow card he said he didn't really get the greatest view
01:54I myself didn't either
01:56But he was given a second yellow card midway into the second half
02:00And Walsall really had to dig in then
02:02And as we saw against MK Doms where they had to show a different side of themselves after Evan Weir was injured
02:07Walsall really did dig in
02:09And it was a brilliant performance as a collective to get over the line
02:15And to be honest, Chesterfield didn't really create much in a period where you would have expected them to really come on to Walsall
02:21There were a couple of headers just over the bar in stoppage time
02:24But it wasn't as nervy as it probably was expected to be
02:28I mean, in terms of the substitutions
02:31Matt Sadler managed the game very well
02:34Brandon Conway and Peter Clark came on
02:36And then after the red card
02:37Chidakoke came on
02:40And again, filled in as sort of a crowbar into an eight roll
02:45Not his natural position but did really well
02:47And then Albert Adoma picked up the baton as well
02:50From goalscorer Karno
02:52Who had run his race at the time
02:54So yeah, everyone put their body on the line
02:56A tireless display for each and every man
03:00Obviously Charlie Lakin will be suspended for the trip to Fleetwood
03:04Jamie Jealous was missing today
03:05With Matt Sadler saying he was unable to feature because of a groin issue
03:10But he's hopeful that it will be available next weekend against Fleetwood
03:13And also Priestley Farkerson went for a scan on Friday
03:17He went off with a groin issue at Chesterfield
03:20And Matt Sadler said it's positive news
03:21And hopefully he too will be back for Fleetwood
