Sultanpur (U.P.): Police in the Chanda area of Sultanpur district have arrested Puja and her alleged lover Jaiprakash alias Dangar Yadav for the murder of her husband Mahesh Kumar, a daily wage worker recently returned from Ludhiana.

Mahesh’s throat-slit body was discovered on 4 September in Kindipur market. Puja was seen weeping bitterly near the corpse, initially convincing villagers it was an attack by unknown assailants.

Investigators, however, traced frequent phone calls between Puja and Jaiprakash on the day of the killing. Under interrogation, Jaiprakash reportedly admitted he plied Mahesh with liquor, after which Puja joined him; Jaiprakash allegedly slit Mahesh’s throat with a knife while Puja struck his chest with a brick.

Police recovered the knife, brick, and mobile phone used in the crime. Both accused have been remanded to jail, and further legal proceedings are underway.

Mahesh, 38, had been supporting the family through labour work in Punjab and had only returned home earlier this year.
