00:00We had a terrible tragedy down at D.Y. Beach this morning.
00:29About 10 a.m. this morning, a 57-year-old gentleman from D.Y. was found in the surf, suffering fatal injuries after what we believe to be an attack by a shark.
00:43The gentleman had gone out about 9.30 this morning with some of his friends, about five or six of his mates, and was out surfing.
00:58He's an experienced surfer that we understand.
01:00And unfortunately, it would appear that a large, what we believe to be shark, has attacked him.
01:05And as a result of that, he lost a number of limbs.
01:10His colleagues managed to make it back to the beach safely.
01:12And a short time later, his body was found floating in the surf.
01:15And a couple of other people went out and recovered it.
01:31Attempts to save his life are unsuccessful.
01:34And we understand he leaves behind a wife and a young daughter.
01:36And obviously, tomorrow being Father's Day, it's particularly critical and particularly tragic.
01:41So, at this point in time, we've spoken to a number of witnesses.
01:45The council and Surf Lifesaving had a number of lifesavers down there at the time.
01:50But unfortunately, it was unsuccessful.
01:52And so, at the moment, we're conducting examination of the board and the gentleman's body.
02:12Look, it's always a risk.
02:13I mean, as a surfer, I mean, I've surfed all over the world, Africa, you know, some of the sharkiest places.
02:18But no matter what, it's still a risk that we all accept and absolutely tragic.
02:23I mean, there's just no other way to look at it.
02:26I mean, it's just, yeah, it's just random bad luck, I think.
02:31Yeah, lived in this area for probably 18 years.
02:35And nothing like this that I've ever known.
02:39Yeah.
02:39It's a tragedy.
02:40Yeah.
02:41And my son's, you know, out in the surf almost every day.
02:44So, it's a real shock.
02:46Big shock.
02:47Yeah.
02:48Yeah, I feel sick about it.
