During a press briefing on Wednesday, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) spoke about some of the takeaways that he believes people should get from the D.C. federal takeovers.

00:00I wanted to ask, what is the long-term solution for D.C.?
00:04Right now, it seems like these are mostly temporary measures.
00:08We know that it's in the White House until September 9th for its first 30 days.
00:12Does that authorization need to come from Congress?
00:16Well, my hope would be that now that people see
00:20what the impact is of actually enforcing the law and making
00:24the city safer, that the city council and the mayor will embrace
00:28those practices and procedures. I know
00:32the U.S. Attorney, Judge Jeanine Pirro
00:36is absolutely committed to doing that, and we are
00:40working with her and her team to change the law.
00:44For example, not to forgive 23,
00:4822, 21-year-olds from prosecution under
00:52the law as adults. In most places around the country,
00:56you can be prosecuted in a given case as an adult, even as a juvenile
01:00under the appropriate circumstances if the judge says so.
01:04But basically what happens now is juvenile offenders
01:08have impunity in the district.
01:10So we're looking at what legal changes may be necessary
01:14and what sort of changes in personnel, what those differences have made.
01:18But we will be – this is something that we'll continue to work on.
01:24Ultimately, the responsibility should be at the mayor and city council level.
01:30But if they're not going to do the job, particularly in the nation's capital, we will.
