Huddersfield Giants coach Luke Robinson was left 'frustrated' after the 26-0 loss to Leeds Rhinos - and not by his side's performance.
Transcript
00:00Robbo, just give us your assessment of that game first, please.
00:04Yeah, look, they've been playing Red Hot.
00:08They're one of four teams in the competition.
00:11I thought we got a response from last week.
00:15I don't think the scoreline reflected the game.
00:18You know, anybody who come to that game and watched that game,
00:21that wasn't how the game panned out.
00:25I'm sort of really frustrated with them on it.
00:29I think there's a bit of an issue within the ruck in our sport.
00:37Greeney gets up and we've got the ball in the second half.
00:40We've got the ball in a couple of plays.
00:43He actually stands on his feet.
00:44Brodicoff pushes him over.
00:47Two touch judges and a ref and the cameras don't see it.
00:53There's a fourth official.
00:55It's not the reason we lost the game.
00:57I don't want to come across like I'm making excuses because I'm not.
01:00I'm not.
01:01The weight of possession eventually took its toll.
01:05It's a really good lead side.
01:06We're playing really good.
01:07And it's not the reason.
01:08But certain moments have bigger impacts within a game.
01:11That moment is massive.
01:13It really frustrates me because of the ruck area.
01:16People don't roll away.
01:18So when a quick play of the ball happens, if somebody is flat behind the hooker,
01:23not only for our team, for every team has to step and move.
01:26You've got to roll away and make an effort to roll away.
01:30It affects momentum then.
01:33And I just felt like that was a massive turning point in the game because we were on the front
01:39for that point in the second half.
01:40We were actually making momentum.
01:42And it's just, I just don't get how you can't see that.
01:47And all of a sudden we don't get the ball.
01:49And look, I thought our lads defended Galtley.
01:52Unfortunately, at one point, we defended 34 tackles inside our 20 before they scored,
01:59which I thought were indicative of what the lads' attitude was coming into the game after
02:09last week.
02:10But eventually, I think we were a little bit blunt with his attack.
02:15I don't think we were very potent.
02:17But then after that little period, you know, he didn't give a penalty our way.
02:22He got a penalty their way.
02:23Fair enough.
02:24We then had a really hard carry coming off our line.
02:27Harry drops the ball.
02:28Again, that's on us.
02:30But we were put in an uncomfortable position.
02:33I think they got a drop on.
02:35That's where I just think we never really recovered.
02:38We never really recovered from that.
02:40And his effort were great.
02:42But we won't, like I say, we won't raise a shot with his attack anyway.
02:48But then from that moment on, I think we just, we just, we kept turning up for each other defensively
02:54over and over and over again.
02:55But then when we had the ball, it was very difficult to actually create some energy.
03:01That Greenwood moment, that's one incident.
03:04Do you think that it was a persistent problem that the Rook's been through at the moment?
03:08I just think, yeah, I just think we've got to, you know, I've got to get to grips with my team
03:13because I think we're at 11-4 the count against us.
03:17It might be 11-4.
03:19We've got to find a way of altering that and getting that swinging our way
03:24because the Rook, you know, it's not just a game for me tonight, the Rook.
03:30I think it's Super League in general, you know, we've got to try and get, you know,
03:35that way somebody just lies in the back of the Rook or makes it a little bit messy.
03:39I think that's something that's within Super League rather than just tonight.
03:45But, yeah, we've got to get, we've got to try and swing that balance a little bit in our favour
03:51with the penalty count and the six against because we just don't get enough of them.
03:55And we need to find a way of us being able to influence that so it comes our way.
04:01In terms of your own performance, I think you sort of touched on it there,
04:05the cutting edge and just that final pass at times.
04:08Is that what was lacking again, do you think?
04:10Yeah, I do.
04:11Like I said before, I think we started to gain a little bit of momentum in that second half
04:15before the Greenwood thing.
04:16But after that, we were a little bit more of an energy battle as well as everything.
04:20But I thought we were a little bit blunt anyway.
04:25You know, we are.
04:26And I know we're down to our 35th half-packs partnership.
04:30So everybody else has probably got a little bit of an edge on us in that respect,
04:35you know, regarding momentum.
04:37And I'm not using it as an excuse, it is.
04:40We are where we are.
04:41But I thought, yeah, I just thought we were a little bit dull with the ball.
04:45In yardage, I thought we were pretty good.
04:47We actually threw the ball to an edge.
04:49We actually shifted the ball early doors, caused a little bit of problems.
04:53Bibic, you know, cut into his opposition's inside centre after a little bit of ball movement.
04:59Gags, we got away.
05:01We could have put away Sam also on a few occasions.
05:04So I don't think yardage, I thought we were pretty good.
05:09I thought we actually shifted the ball a little bit.
05:12And we looked good through that.
05:13But when we got into good ball, that's where I thought we were a little bit blunt.
05:18I thought we, when we did start building a little bit of momentum on his edges.
05:22Joe Greenwood got a couple of quick play of the balls.
05:24We broke the play down.
05:26And they really stifled us on that next play.
05:29And I thought, once we got that little momentum, I thought we should have shifted it.
05:33And actually exposed the edges after a quick play of the ball.
05:36But we broke down a little bit too often for me.
05:39And they then, like I say, they smothered us and made it slow.
05:43And wrestled that momentum, which good sides do.
05:47Which, yeah, if we had time over again, that's one thing I think we'd do a little bit differently.
05:52How do you solve that?
05:53I asked that question with half a mind on next year as well,
05:57when you're looking that far forward.
05:59Yeah, a little bit of that will come with a bit of experience.
06:02You know, you've got George as his first pretty much.
06:05Full year.
06:06Rush is more accustomed to a hooking role.
06:10Who's played in the halfs.
06:12And Russell spent all year at Wakefield.
06:14You know, it's...
06:16I don't think it takes a rocky scientist to work out.
06:19If we get the spine back on the field and playing together,
06:22we'll have a little bit more momentum and we'll have a little bit more...
06:25attack importance.
06:27I've said all along that, look, when Tuilola is on the field,
06:30I think he's one of the most dangerous attackers within the league.
06:35You know, Tonga pretty much picks him every year for that attacking threat.
06:40That'll help.
06:42But, yeah, we are where we're at.
06:45And, you know, we had Marshall Lancome on, an 18-year-old,
06:50which, you know, threw Marshall on from the Suns bench
06:53to try and create a little bit of something else.
06:55He's going to be a really good player, is Marshall.
06:58He's going to be better for that experience.
07:00Going against, you know, going against a really good Leeds team,
07:03when the momentum were against him, you know,
07:06that's only going to improve him and make him a better player.
07:10Are there parts of that performance tonight that, again, looking to 2026,
07:14do give you encouragement that there's large parts of your game
07:18that are positive, especially that first half when you went to the Suns.
07:22Oh, look, in that first half, you know,
07:24they were really frustrating the first half.
07:26We were 4-0 down with about three minutes to go.
07:29They'd scored off a kick, which, you know, you've still got to be able to defend.
07:33I think we'd just been a little bit, if we'd reacted a little bit quicker
07:37on our left edge, we would have solved that.
07:39But from that, they don't feel like they really cause us that many problems.
07:43So there is things to take from it that our goal ID were really, really good
07:47to see how much pressure they put on us
07:50and how many players the ball has had inside our clinic,
07:52you know, through the six against and through the penalties.
07:55They gained field position.
07:57So there's a lot of things that you can take from that in a positive manner.
08:02Still really, really disappointed with the result.
08:05And, you know, we didn't manage to get two points,
08:09but there's positives to look at, you know.
08:12Billington's gone.
08:14Somebody we picked up from Rugby Union at Richworth School.
08:20The private school, he's not had that much experience within Rugby League.
08:25He's not been playing it since we were eight, nine-year-old.
08:28He's gone out on loan.
08:30He's played at Barrow.
08:31He's played at Batley.
08:32He's played at Hunsler.
08:33He's played at Halifax and White.
08:36He's played a lot of clubs anyway.
08:38And he's done the hard yards.
08:40And I thought today he did a really good stint in the back row
08:43against, you know, a good lead side.
08:45And I thought that was one positive.
08:47I thought Sam also had a pretty good game on the edge.
08:51It's another positive.
08:52Marshall, an 18-year-old, another positive.
08:54So there's definitely positives that we can take out of the game for next year.
08:59John Billington, did he fail his HIA?
09:02No, no.
09:03It wasn't just a case.
09:05I just spoke to Billington then.
09:09He said that they want time for him to come back on anyway.
09:12So they're doing the test as we speak now.
09:15Any other injuries?
09:17I think I might be OK for once, yeah.
09:22I might be OK.
09:24There's some bumps and bruises, but I think everybody else came through the game
09:30so the players that played should be available for next week.
09:35All good.
09:38Cheers, guys.
