00:00you have this sort of stereotypical idea of the kinds of individuals who want to own a lion or a
00:09tiger right Al Pacino in Scarface he's got the tiger is it is it a status thing I'm Stacey Dooley
00:19and I'm packing my bags for some more sleepovers I'll be coming out of my comfort zone actually
00:28if I fall to my death in Scotland to spend the weekend in the homes of Britain's more
00:34extraordinary families you leave I follow you've likened feminism to cancer this is Hebrew oh my
00:48grace I'm so sorry imagine owning an island do you worry about having a criminal record my name
00:59is Stacey what's the best thing about being a model no one
01:07pumas don't belong in the UK oh my god I really didn't anticipate
01:18I am in rural Nottinghamshire it is idyllic it's that kind of oldie-woldie
01:37calm village vibe I am going to go meet a guy called Rhys and his family so he owns two lions
01:47and a puma and various other animals in Nottinghamshire but they're in his back garden
01:54I'm actually quite surprised that we've arrived at this point because we have been back and forth
02:04with Rhys for months I think he's got concerns because it's so emotive and it's so controversial
02:12you know keeping wild animals in cages
02:15there are nearly 4,000 exotic animals being kept as pets across the UK
02:22after the Netflix smash hit Tiger King aired during lockdown in 2020
02:27the number of people applying for dangerous wild animal licenses soared this all feels quite timely
02:34right because we were all completely taken with Tiger King myself included because Joe Exotic is such a
02:45maniac and so charismatic like you couldn't you couldn't take your eyes off him
02:50since Rhys brought the lions to the family home two years ago he's been appearing regularly in the tabloids
03:00so this is from one of the local papers and the headline is residents fear for safety after council
03:10allows two lions and a puma to be kept in the village Rhys Oliver that's our guy there's an international show jumper
03:19keeps the animals in enclosures at his home many residents have been expressing their concerns over safety
03:26at some point you have to take into account the element of human error which can often happen
03:31so basically a loads of the neighbors are up in arms I definitely want to ask him about that
03:36instinctively I don't feel like a beautiful wild majestic animal belongs in a cage in a garden
03:50in Nottinghamshire it's not where lions should be I might feel totally different on Monday you never know
04:01one mile down from the picturesque village of strelly
04:04Rhys lives with his girlfriend at his parents family home
04:12okay house is massive
04:16this house is enormous
04:36hello baby that's Harriet Harriet oh thank you ever so much how are you you good yeah it's beautiful
04:55this um yeah the village is really pretty isn't it but it's not what you expected all these animals to
04:59I mean I can't I I cannot believe that I'm gonna meet two lions and a puma

05:41through the plans for the weekend you'll just have to go along with the chaos of every weekend's
05:47it's chaotic anyways do you want me to show you around the house yeah that'd be amazing
05:51that's where capybara is at the minute
05:54all right capy looks like a hairy pig
06:01this is dining room wow as you could tell a horsey and this is where the guys watch telly

06:28thank you
06:30he told me he does but he doesn't
06:31so this will be your room
06:33thank you
06:34yeah
06:35oh this is perfect
06:36I'm sweet
06:36thank you so much
06:37yeah
06:38the family boasts of their wealth being substantially self-made
06:43dad gary has a heat in engineering business
06:46and alongside a successful career as a show jumper
06:49Reese now runs an equestrian business with his mum Karen
06:53are we allowed to see the lions
07:00yeah
07:00okay now
07:02yeah
07:02okay
07:03cool
07:04I don't even know what to expect
07:06just down from the house next to the busy m1 are the family stables
07:13so where where do you keep the lions
07:16near a lot
07:18oh my god I can sit jeez
07:20they've spotted you
07:25why didn't they be so close
07:28how close are we allowed to go
07:32oh you can go closer than this
07:34hello
07:40that's a friendly hello
07:41there she is
07:42so this is the lioness
07:45what's their name
07:46Rora
07:46Rora
07:47and he's called Rocky
07:49he is
07:50gigantic
07:51Reese
07:52do you know I don't think I've ever been this close
07:56no that's what a lot of people say
07:59so these are very much your pets
08:02yeah they're kind of mine you know I mean
08:03they love me
08:05do you think they love you
08:06oh they look yeah they do yeah
08:07he he is literally obsessed with me
08:10so this is their base right
08:14where is their outside space
08:15we'll go out here
08:16out you come
08:22thank you
08:23oh my god look
08:28they're just magnificent
08:31like they're so
08:32stunning isn't they
08:35oh so this is the puma
08:40this is him
08:41he he's a little bit funny with loads of people
08:44oh okay okay
08:45he loves me and it's that's it
08:47hey
08:47you can hear him purring actually
08:50you can come closer
08:51hello mate
08:54what's he called
08:55he's called Rogue
08:56Rogue
08:57he was a rescue because I think somebody kept him as a pet
09:00in the house and then when they realized
09:02that he was probably ripping all the sofas and stuff
09:06obviously
09:06obviously then they just dumped him at this rescue center
09:09he was the first one I had and
09:11so the puma came first
09:12yeah I basically bottle fed him till he was about a year old
09:15are puma's capable of killing humans
09:18I think any any wildcat is is capable of killing humans
09:23you good boy
09:25Rhys you're completely insane putting your fingers in his mouth
09:30I promise you I will not be putting my fingers anywhere near that bloody fence
09:37no
09:40the whole setup is utterly bonkers
09:44and it's evident that you know Rhys feels he has a real sort of a loving connection
09:51with both the lions and the puma
09:55and you can understand why people fall in love with them
09:58but this all feels very strange to me
10:05it's kind of nuts because you can't stop staring at them because they're so magical
10:13but you also think
10:14if you weren't in a cage I would be dead
10:20so
10:27today's you want to give me a hand
10:31yes yeah yeah yeah what do you need
10:33if you could chop up the garlic bread for us that would be fabulous i'm just chopping it in half
10:37yes no hassle okay i heard you're a really good chef i'm an excellent chef honey yeah
10:43i'm staying over with reese oliver and his family should we sit down i know yeah
10:49his dad gary and brother todd are home for the evening
10:53reese acquired his cubs at five weeks old and they have now grown into two-year-old adult lions
11:00i'm curious to find out more about the impact of bringing such dangerous animals into a small
11:05village how did it all play out race how did you get to learn about the two lions the same guy with
11:14the puma he told me that there was a organization in uh eastern europe i think it got shut down for
11:20animal cruelty so they came and said there's a bunch of lions needed rescuing otherwise basically they're
11:25all getting euthanized you didn't buy them no i didn't buy them there i basically drove over to
11:31check and picked them up and what you put them in the back of their van and come back yeah i've got
11:36like a quarantine approved safety vehicle and then drove them back from eastern europe it was like
11:4318 hours drive or something alone yeah and i literally had to stop every two hours because
11:48they needed feeding every two hours i just can't imagine annie when your man says right i'm gonna
11:56go and um take on a puma and then shortly after actually there's a couple of lions on their way
12:03my parents were like run really at first they were like it's such a big commitment but you've
12:08already got a commitment having 18 horses and dogs and everything else we've got
12:12what are two lines and a puma and gary what did you think what i thought is i must have dropped him
12:20on his head when i was when he was a child i don't really get involved with them how much
12:25interactions do you have to add uh none at all oh really yeah you're not fast no i'm not first
12:31i've got two goldfish upstairs they're my only priority that feels a lot more relatable
12:37so did you underestimate the interest there would be surrounding you and your animals
12:45because when the puma arrived i imagine the whole village were totally out of sort what on earth is
12:51going on they didn't know until they until the lines arrived we kept it quiet for as long as we could
12:55like i imagine that went down like a lead balloon oh yeah yeah it did yeah every three months they have
13:00a village meeting and there's like there's many people that's around this table now at it and then when
13:05the news got out there was 80 oh i think about 80 villages weren't there it's like question time
13:09i had to stand at basically the front and they all fired questions at me what were the villagers saying
13:15to you at that first meeting was i doing it for my ego okay which i think for what it's cost to spend
13:22to keep them i could have been driving around in ferrari or going on yeah fancy holidays and did you
13:28have any reservations did you think god i'm taking a lot on here and some people are gonna be really on
13:34side and some people are gonna hate what i'm about to do i mean what people think and don't think
13:41is kind of like irrelevant really because it's what i want to do you know i mean
13:52you know obviously you have this sort of stereotypical idea of the kinds of individuals who want to own a
13:58lion or a tiger right al pacino in scarface he's got the tiger and mike tyson you know is it is it a
14:07status thing i don't know is it i have ownership over these wild kind of dangerous creatures
14:17i think to them it's really not a massive saga that they've got these two lions and a puma
14:24to everyone else obviously we're like this isn't usual and there are loads of things we need to
14:32take into consideration and is it safe and is it fair and are the animals looked after the list goes on
14:38and on and on are you all right capi i think they just are obsessed with animals and don't really
14:47understand why other people think it's a bit mental
14:54it's saturday morning hello how are you race good yeah oh my god slept so well are you ready for
15:16today today yeah and i'm really up for it with a long list of animals to feed do i just give it
15:27whole here baby i'm trying my hardest to help out thank you this is lauren that's ralph over there
15:37uh-huh are they vicious no no no no if you if you just take that just hold it out hi lauren
15:49i can only imagine how ridiculous i look
15:54space yep yep you chop yeah and i'll get the balls all right
16:00so if they bite you don't scream because they will all bite you
16:03i'm not scared of these little monkeys reese
16:11hi
16:15hello what's your fancy
16:22oh gosh oh sorry sorry i'm sorry sorry sorry oh
16:26oh
16:28oh it's all right oh my god checking if you've got fleas
16:35over there babe don't look sorry that's okay
16:41space have you made a mess yeah i'm so sorry
16:43i i i just didn't realize they would be so bold and so curious
17:02i've got a monkey footprint on my head karen yeah brilliant absolutely tremendous
17:20after spending the morning with reese's eclectic assortment of exotic animals
17:24this is really lovely thanks i'm interested to know how he got started what is it about a certain
17:33type of person that owning a cat or a dog isn't enough karen what was your reese like when he
17:39was a boy well i could get called up on plenty of occasions was reese the naughtiest kid
17:46yeah yeah he's the naughtiest but he gets away with everything he's the favorite yeah
17:56he's not hot
18:01and then what happened when he left school you know i was riding for for for a chap in
18:04middle of germany and he had lots of different cats and i helped him looked after the cats and
18:11i did my license out there so is that where the love affair started between you and
18:16wild cats yeah i think so yeah and then i got into some contacts with there in
18:22in czech and a few other places and then it just evolves from there like i know that you can own a lion
18:28or a tiger when you try and look for those people who've got them you cannot find them it's like
18:32they don't exist there's facebook groups you don't even know about could i own a lion
18:38what would i have to do you'd have to apply for a dangerous wild animal license
18:42you'd have to prove you were competent you've got experience show that you can keep the public
18:47safe public safety and animal welfare and effectively yeah you can have one with an enclosure so yeah it's
18:54possible
19:04i'm a bit taken aback by how easy it seems to get a license for these animals
19:09but i want a closer look at what caring for them actually involves
19:13race what is that dragging on the floor that's the insides of a calf so you've kept all the organs
19:20yeah because it's good for them because they get all the nutrients and stuff from it
19:28what is that alarm race um that is an alarm that when the doors open if it's open for more
19:34than 10 seconds the alarm goes off
19:35um
19:43where do you get these carcasses from an abattoir you know when old horses die and they get shot or
19:50carts pigs anything like that and then we can reuse the meat and do you have to buy them
19:56yeah we do have to buy a lot of the time we have to buy them because he brings them here so you have
19:59to pay him for his time and things like that so yeah i imagine it's quite expensive feeding two
20:03lions and a puma how much do you reckon you're spending on feed per month probably around about
20:09nearly a thousand pound a month a bit like that for everything
20:19bloody hell
20:20he is gigantic i mean he is big isn't he you know he's two he's only two
20:38are lions in captivity ever able to live a fulfilled life how do you mean fulfilled life healthy happy
20:47stimulated yeah because we do what's called enrichment so we don't just like chuck the food on the floor
20:52like we hang it up or we hide it in boxes they do something different every single day twice a day
20:58some people will feel utterly heartbroken at the fact that these lions are in this cage by the m1
21:06yeah i understand where they're coming from it's not the ideal location for
21:09for any wild animal although they belong in the wild unfortunately it's too far in life for them for
21:13that to happen so do you believe that once a lion has been in a domestic environment it's impossible
21:23for them to be reintegrated into the wild um yeah you do i think so for a lion yeah i think it is
21:32pretty much impossible they don't know how to don't if i put a sheep in there a live sheep or a live
21:36chicken they don't really know how to kill it yeah that's everybody's biggest thing release them into
21:41the wild you cannot just do it just isn't possible to do that this whole conversation is so interesting
21:54because i know some people they'll be repulsed by the whole setup they'll totally disagree
22:02with the idea of them being in such a confined space
22:04but reese does have arguably a valid point you know experts do accept that some lions do starve
22:16in the wild but is that a good enough reason to keep them in a cage next to the m1
22:34oh boomer no you handsome boy i'm spending the weekend with reese and his private collection of
22:41exotic animals
22:46ever since he brought two african lions to share the family home
22:50reese and his girlfriend annie have had to pour a lot of their lives into caring for the animals
22:54although reese is confident he's doing the right thing i wonder if it ever puts a strain on their
23:05relationship
23:09you were prepping the horses whilst i was watching reese feed the lions and this is just a standard
23:16day for you know annie yeah it's just the norm really it's become just the usual are there moments
23:23where you can't quite believe where you found yourself when you stand back and look at it and
23:30see them it is strange and it is unusual but yeah it's just become everyday normal even for my parents
23:36it's just becoming a usual thing and they were kind of the biggest ones we had to overcome at first
23:41like everybody they assume that they're just kept in a garden with a picket fence they don't realize
23:46the security measured and everything that we've got here some people will argue these these creatures
23:53are used to occupying territories that are hundreds of square kilometers this is totally inadequate have
24:03you ever personally wrestled with the idea when reese first mentioned that he was bringing them back
24:09i was totally on the other side saying actually these should be in the wild or they should be in
24:15a zoo or whatever what changed for you when they came and i realized the story of why they were here
24:22then it was of our priority to make sure they do get treated well they are happy and they are well
24:28looked after and i hope you can see that we do love them a lot but then i know outsiders will say
24:35that you benefit way more than the animal is it selfish to keep them here because you love them
24:41so much do you think we benefit hugely because it we could live in a nice house the two of us with
24:47wilf the little dog in our eyes the main reason why they're here isn't because we love them and we
24:54want them to be here we believe that it is their best interest for them to be here
24:58this sounds all consuming it is and it is our lifestyle now do you think you always look like this
25:08as long as i'm with reese there's no other option is there because they're not going anywhere so it's
25:12either me or the cat
25:16when i first said to reese that i was getting the tiny little cockapoo that i have
25:20and that he was going to be living in the house no no chance no chance now just hang on a minute
25:27because i deal with two lions a puma the 20 monkeys and 18 horses so if i want a little dog you can
25:33pretty well agree with it
25:40the outside world has taken an interest too since he moved his wild animals into the sleepy village
25:47reese has endured a barrage of negative press attention
25:59this is yours reese okay perfect i'm curious to hear how the family feel about being pushed into
26:06the spotlight how do you guys feel about the fact that reese is now like often making headlines
26:15well somebody told me a long time ago when i had my fortune told
26:19that he'd be famous and obviously they were right for all the wrong reasons
26:27i mean you're recognizable now do you like that do you not like that it's not great for me it's always
26:34bad because it tells a great story when you do it like that people read it when it's something bad
26:38how do you feel annie when you read negative things because when people write about me
26:44the people that love me feel angrier than i do do you feel protective the haters are always going
26:50to hate and if you let it get to you and you get into this massive kind of depression of thinking
26:56oh yeah they're right and reading everything it's best not to read it so you don't pay too much
27:00attention race we did at first but we don't anymore no i don't i think probably the worst thing that
27:05thing is they say that so egoistic sort of type of person that's what the kind of egotistical yeah
27:11like you want to be perceived as this crazy playboy i mean if i wanted to go down the tiger king
27:17route and be a complete lunatic i could probably earn more money for doing it do you know what i
27:22mean but it's not the kind of look i want to go from i have my my own businesses and stuff that make
27:27money it's not i'm doing it for money definitely not doing it for money that's for sure
27:32i think for reese it's about not letting other people win reese is going to do whatever he wants
27:45regardless of what annie thinks mum thinks dad thinks todd thinks he is very strong-minded very
27:52strong-willed that's it mate thank you thank you yeah get this on camera jesus christ i'm like a
28:01waiter i'm like a waiter man of every talent this has never ever happened whilst he says i don't care
28:06what people say he clearly wants to show the wider public who he is and how the lines are kept
28:13and show some of the people that criticized him that it's not warranted hello what are you doing
28:29i think there'll be villagers who have small children walking up and down that stretch of land
28:36and they're thinking well i know that there's a puma and two lions literally within walking distance
28:44i think it's sort of fair enough that some parents would feel iffy about them being there
29:05i think it's a puma and i think it's a puma and it's a puma and it's a puma and it's a puma and it's a puma
29:12while staying with reese i've got a sense of how much of an appetite there is for news stories about
29:17the risks of keeping wild animals this morning is no exception every morning when i wake up i just check
29:26the news and you couldn't script it there's this article 14 hours ago from indonesia there were these two
29:34tigers torrential rain meant that they were able to escape killed the zookeeper but you you hear so
29:42many accounts like this and it's so it's so clear to me that it's going to happen because they are wild
29:50animals anyway can't wait for today
30:00morning are you all right
30:06um reese did you see the news this morning no what is it indonesian zookeeper
30:12i think there was like torrential rain it meant that two tigers could escape tiger killed the zoo
30:20keeper but then they tranquilized one of them and shot the other dead the tiger
30:25you don't ever worry about stuff like that what again out and killing someone killing you
30:40get hit by a bus can you you got more chance do you know how much insurance is a year for
30:45to own two lions and a puma for five million cover of damages
30:4920 grand 150 quid a year
30:57that's how low risk is
31:08one of the terms on reese's wild and dangerous animal license
31:12is that he must demonstrate that he keeps his big cats from endangering members of the public
31:16by not allowing them to escape oh he's coming look look how agile he is oh oh look look look look
31:32this is when you realize how like ferocious they are but even though reese has complex security
31:42measures in place things can go wrong in 2020 it was reported in the news that reese's puma rogue
31:51had attacked a former member of his staff after she entered the enclosure
31:56so you don't you don't fear rogue at all from this side of the fence no do you get in the cage
32:16no you do we do it when we need to do it it's not something i go in there and start cuddling him
32:21but it's well documented there was a situation involving rogue there was somebody an individual
32:29working for you who let herself into the cage the cat didn't escape she let herself into the cage and
32:36there was an altercation what happened to be honest you i don't really want to go into it if you read
32:41newspapers and you read the newspapers that have printed this stuff they're not reliable and that's
32:46really all i'm going to have to say on the matter how much how much are you happy to say any i think
32:53reese has said you don't really know much about it you haven't really had much i think this is your
32:57right to reply is i mean that that's all i'm going to say because i think it's not fair on all parties
33:05really and when you become in the limelight for something you are literally harassed by newspapers
33:13you don't realize what the impact that they have on our life it really really put so much pressure
33:18on me and i could i actually nearly broke from it do you accept that whatever happens here ultimately
33:26you're responsible it's your responsibility to keep people and animals safe yes it is my responsibility
33:31and that is something we are really serious about that situation would never would never happen again
33:36because this the security in the system here is absolutely watertight you can see the signs
33:42the signs are here no access unless trained and authorized it's there do not put your fingers
33:47through the mesh you cannot get through one door without the other door behind you closing when the
33:51door opens you heard yourself the alarms go off when the doors open they text you so i'm doing it for
33:58the public as well to keep everyone safe but also for my cats which is the main concern to me because
34:02i want them to be safe and the last thing i ever want them to do is to escape did it make your
34:07relationship with the villagers even more fraught did some of the villagers say well this is what we're
34:13worried about no because i think um in general that it's newspapers haters are always going to hate
34:20they're always going to hate and i don't take any notice
34:23you know today was definitely the most awkward day
34:35uber defensive very kind of unwilling to go there
34:41and i i think when the news broke he was handed by journalists i think he had a pretty hellish couple of
34:51weeks but you know he has to be held to account that his cats
34:58i'm not privy to all the conversations that go on here i can only ask the questions and
35:04you know he can tell me what he wants to tell me
35:21he says it's getting cold now oh i think it's going to snow tonight yeah i think it is
35:27while i've been staying with reese the size of the lion enclosures has been causing me some concern
35:35his wild cats don't seem to have much space to roam when i think of the huge territories that they have
35:40in the wild as it stands now how big is the lion's space um the lion's space is around about uh 350
35:53square meters legally what's the minimum requirement 37 square meters at the moment it's 10 times than the
36:00minimum that's really interesting because to me as an outsider looking on this feels very confined this
36:09feels small yes i have plans to make it bigger already in place so i'm going to go literally to
36:16the top of this field here so right to the gate right to the gate yeah and then all the way down
36:22the field and pass the stables which is really big that's bigger than some zoos definitely
36:29i'm just trying to think of it from the villagers perspective this house here do you know who lives
36:36there yeah i know him yeah do they worry about the lions potentially being even closer to their
36:42family home i think they've probably got concerns but you know like i said to all of the neighbors
36:46um you're welcome to come around we can discuss i can try and work with you if you put planning
36:52permission in yeah what's your relationship with the local authorities like we've got a really good
36:58relationship with the council i suspect that there are some councillors yeah who perhaps oppose this
37:06there was one in particular he's not a very fair person and he doesn't really do a lot for this
37:13village so i'm going to stand as a councillor for the counties and the borough councillor and i'm
37:18going to try and improve this area obviously people are going to compare you to joe exotic now
37:24you know what you know what happened with him yeah i heard about that yeah what parallels
37:29i'm trying to think how i would feel if i lived there i really don't know whether or not i would mind
37:35you'll be next to the worst things well that's true when do we find out whether or not you get
37:47the green light i think it'd be like middle of march okay okay i mean yeah they would have so much
37:53more space yeah wouldn't they i think i've been quite honest with them that space feels very very small
38:08to me and whilst you can disagree with a lot of what he is about you have to give credit where it's due
38:17he wants to give them as much space as possible but it's also worth bearing in mind you can have
38:23all of the ticks and you know this can be legal on paper but that doesn't mean morally it's it's right
38:36thanks mate thank you i'm really grateful thank you it's my final meal with the olivers
38:43and they've brought me to their home from home so this is the family pub yeah we're all working
38:52together really don't we yeah we just take all the money my dad repairs the toilet sounds like a
38:57plan to me todd my dad repairs the toilet is that gary's shiny green gary you're taking a notice of
39:04green drinks i drink the wine toss the cocktail maker yeah yeah i bring the birds i bring the birds
39:16well listen thank you for for having me over i know it took a while and you were sort of
39:22them in an hour and back and forth and i get that what did you feel like before you came on like us
39:28and what we do and and be be honest with it what was your opinion on everything we did feel like
39:35keeping wild animals in a small cage it's quite cruel like i do you think they could be better elsewhere
39:44i would like to see them have just more space which is what we're hoping with this planet mission going
39:49through we're hoping that that can be possible and that's what race was saying and he was saying
39:53you know if we go right back and down to the sides that would be bigger than some zoos
39:59and then i think 100 and then i think that's harder to argue
40:05you're really good at this actually
40:21race is such an interesting character i think i was expecting a bit of a narcissist i think i was
40:27expecting a kind of loud playboy kind of flashy character and i don't think it's like that i think
40:38he's he's more likeable than i'd anticipated what do you think your brother would be good at
40:48people's account so good at busting people around already necessary you need to be able to delegate
40:53yeah be good at that um and he's passionate about things so be good have you decided on your picture
41:01your photo no i need to do that actually this weekend you need like a smart suit and you know
41:06they sort of they have their body at that angle we're going to be different that's what we're yeah
41:11no that's true so it's a bit more informal just like get a lion in the background or something
41:16that's not okay let's not the fact that reese has got you know two lions and a puma it has brought so
41:23much attention and so much stress to this family i do wonder like is it is it worth it i just want a
41:31quiet life but i don't think reese he's that way inclined i think he's always been i'm gonna do what i
41:37want to do i've been pleasantly surprised in terms of how respectful they've been towards me even
41:56though they know what i make of their setup on my final morning i wait to some weather that these lions
42:17wouldn't encounter in the wild hey what are you doing before i head back to london i've got just
42:34enough time to tidy up after myself it's my hair i'm like a dog it just goes everywhere
42:41oh our family look making sure i'm off the premises
42:54um thank you so so much i hope it wasn't too painful for you reese no it was good
43:02right thank you so much take care thank you see you later
