00:00There was someone else in here!
00:02What? Where?
00:03By the door!
00:05It was behind the door!
00:06Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks
00:09for the top 20 most terrifying moments from The Conjuring franchise.
00:14Beware of spoilers.
00:21Number 20. The opening scene with Annabelle, The Conjuring.
00:25It started out small, like a hand or a leg was in a different position.
00:31While horror movies don't necessarily need to open with a scare, it is preferred.
00:35It helps prepare the audience for what's to come,
00:37and gives them confidence in the director's ability going forward.
00:40Luckily, the opening scene of The Conjuring is a nail-biter
00:43that perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the film.
00:46She wanted to live with us by inhabiting the doll.
00:48We said yes.
00:49But then, things got worse.
00:51The opening shot of Annabelle's eyeball is immediately off-putting,
00:54and it only grows scarier from there,
00:57as we witness a sentient doll terrorizing a couple of young women.
01:05It's a great start to not only The Conjuring,
01:08but also the entire Conjuring universe.
01:10It's our first glimpse of one of the most popular horror villains of the entire decade.
01:18Number 19. Truck Scene. Annabelle Comes Home.
01:22Gary Dauberman's sequel might not reach the heights of its predecessors,
01:25but when it comes to jump scares, it delivers some real winners.
01:29Right from the start, we've dropped into the aftermath of one of Annabelle's early hauntings.
01:36Sorry. Wires crossed.
01:38Ed and Lorraine are driving the cursed doll home when things take a spooky turn.
01:42Their car stalls near the cemetery, and while Ed checks the engine,
01:46Lorraine senses something's off.
01:48She's right. They are surrounded by ghosts, and Ed is right in the middle.
01:53Then, out of nowhere, one shoves Ed into an oncoming truck.
01:59Honey? You okay?
02:00It's one nerve-wracking scene Dauberman builds through smart pacing and atmospheric tension,
02:18letting the fear simmer before it strikes.
02:20If you're watching this alone, either you're fearless or begging for nightmares.
02:24Are you okay?
02:25I'm fine.
02:30It's the doll, Ed.
02:34It's a beacon for other spirits.
02:36Number 18. The Toy Fire Truck. The Conjuring 2.
02:45The scene involving the fire truck is a great example of building tension and meeting expectations.
02:50We feel a little uneasy when the fire truck appears outside Billy's room,
02:54but the scene ups the tension when we, and Billy,
02:57notice the ominous blanket tent at the end of the hallway.
03:00The scene then utilizes silence and shadow to fantastic effect,
03:03as it both heightens our fear, and gets us prepared for the coming scare.
03:07We know something's in there.
03:09We just don't know what or when it'll emerge.
03:15And while the final scream may be a little cheap,
03:17the sheer guttural and hostile sound of it is enough to make anyone jump and squirm.
03:28Number 17. Ghost Girl and the Door. Annabelle.
03:32Imagine sharing your home with a murderous spirit.
03:35Well, bad things are bound to happen.
03:38That is the nightmare Mia and her family endure in this chilling chapter that explores Annabelle's origin.
03:43This scene still haunts us.
03:56Here, director John R. Leonetti doesn't rely on cheap tricks.
04:00He builds dread with precision.
04:02Mia is home alone when eerie stuff starts happening.
04:04The music plays on its own.
04:06The sewing machine whirs to life.
04:08Then, the real terror strikes.
04:18Mia spots a little girl darting around the house.
04:22The door closes and the girl charges towards Mia,
04:24and in one heart-stopping flash,
04:27transforms into a demonic woman.
04:29It is smooth, shocking, and masterfully timed.
04:39You'll scream, jump, or do both.
04:41That is guaranteed.
04:44Number 16. Carolyn's Possession. The Conjuring.
04:47Let's be real.
04:48Nothing in The Conjuring universe surpasses James Wan's original masterpiece.
04:52From tension and intriguing storyline,
04:55to incredible acting and memorable scares,
04:56it has it all.
04:58If there's one moment that cranks up the terror,
05:01it's this scene where things go from bad to full-blown horror.
05:04Get her head!
05:05Get her head!
05:06Carolyn, now possessed by Bathsheba,
05:16turns on her own kid.
05:18The Warrens and their team struggle to restrain her,
05:20but the spirit refuses to back down.
05:22As they attempt to pull Carolyn out of the house,
05:24Bathsheba violently yanks her back inside.
05:27Ouch.
05:28Come on!
05:29No!
05:30No!
05:31No!
05:32No!
05:33No!
05:37No!
05:39No!
05:39The scene hits hard for its visceral brutality
05:41and gut-wrenching emotional weight.
05:44Watching Carolyn be tossed around by a vicious force
05:46after fighting to harm her child
05:47is just plain heartbreaking.
05:49No!
05:51Roger!
05:52Carolyn!
05:56Carolyn!
05:58Number 15.
05:59The Crooked Man, The Conjuring 2.
06:01Set in 1977,
06:03this film sees the Warrens travel to England
06:05to help the Hodgson family,
06:07who are plagued by something dark.
06:09While Valak is the main villain,
06:11this isn't about the demon nun,
06:12but her twisted manifestation,
06:14The Crooked Man.
06:16This shape-shifting entity doesn't just appear.
06:18His transformation from a dog
06:20into this towering figure that attacks Billy
06:22is a heart-stopping highlight.
06:29His presence may be brief,
06:31but paired with that nursery rhyme
06:33that twists childhood innocence
06:34into something deeply unsettling,
06:36he becomes unforgettably creepy.
06:38I was a crooked man.
06:43And he walks a crooked mile.
06:48Even more impressive,
06:49he's no CGI.
06:51Those mind-bending moves
06:52are brought to life
06:53by contortionist Javier Botet.
06:55Add wands, slow pans,
06:57and a pulsing score,
06:58and you've got a scare that sticks.
07:00And thus his crooked soul
07:02spiraled into a crooked hell.
07:10Murdered his crooked family
07:12and loved the crooked land.
07:15Number 14.
07:16The Final Showdown.
07:18The Nun.
07:19Valak, the big bad guy of the franchise,
07:21can take different forms
07:22to sow confusion and fear.
07:24In this 2018 flick,
07:26she emerges as a sinister-looking nun
07:28from the shadows of a cursed Romanian abbey,
07:30awakened after a rift to hell was reopened.
07:33Throughout the film,
07:34Valak torments Father Burke and Sister Irene,
07:37creating many creepy moments.
07:39But nothing tops the final showdown.
07:51It takes place in a claustrophobic tunnel,
07:54which heightens the tension,
07:55especially with Valak being so unstoppable.
07:57Tapping into universal fears like confinement,
08:00drowning, and helplessness
08:02against something so evil,
08:03the terror feels so relentless.
08:17Even when it appears the demon is defeated,
08:20we learn that it isn't the end,
08:22but only the beginning.
08:23Nothing more than a third grade education.
08:25Yet after he was possessed.
08:30Spoke some of the best Latin I'd ever heard.
08:32And like that,
08:33an upside-down cross
08:35started to appear from within his body.
08:37Number 13.
08:38Esther Mullins' Corpse.
08:40Annabelle Creation.
08:41Set before the events of Annabelle,
08:43this film takes us back to where the horror began.
08:46It truly excels at blending gore,
08:49supernatural terror,
08:50and emotional stakes.
08:51And this scene encapsulates all that.
08:53I thought the evil was contained.
08:57We thought helping the girls could be our penance.
09:00Desperate to reconnect with their dead child,
09:02Esther Mullins and her husband unwittingly invite a demon spirit into their home.
09:06After Esther shares this tragic backstory with Sister Charlotte,
09:09she's killed off-screen.
09:11We have no idea how horrifying her death is
09:13until the girls explore her isolated room
09:16and find her mutilated corpse hanging on the wall.
09:20It's such a gory and jarring sight
09:22that you can't help but scream right along with them.
09:24Just when you think it's over.
09:26Her half-torn body springs back to life later on
09:29and terrorizes them.
09:41Number 12.
09:42Bill laughs through Janet.
09:43The Conjuring 2.
09:45With this gripping sequel,
09:46James Wan proves once again he is a master of horror.
09:50Like the first film,
09:51The Conjuring 2 is yet another based on true events tale,
09:54and we know how that simple spin amplifies the dread.
09:57This time, Janet Hodgson is the target of a dark entity.
10:01In one scene that still sends chills down our spine,
10:03Janet becomes possessed by Billy Wilkins during an interview.
10:19It's truly unnerving as she switches from an innocent child
10:23to a snarling figure with hoarse laughter,
10:25even hurling insults at her mother.
10:27Well, what should I call you?
10:34This scene becomes even more chilling
10:40when you realize Bill isn't even the real threat,
10:42but a pawn being used by Valak to torment the Hodgson's.
10:46Why have you come here?
10:51I like to hear them scream.
10:57Number 11.
10:58The Ferryman's Tomb.
11:00Annabelle Comes Home.
11:01In this installment,
11:02Annabelle doesn't bring terror on her own.
11:04She unleashes other demons locked inside the Warren's artifact room.
11:08One of the scariest spirits she awakens is the Ferryman.
11:12He's the very symbol of death,
11:13collecting souls and requiring coins for payment.
11:17Mary Ellen's first encounter with the spirit is suspense-filled and chilling all the way.
11:21But the moment that left us truly petrified is the hallway lined up with his victims,
11:31eyes covered with coins.
11:33Imagine your home being transformed into a funeral site.
11:36There's no coming back from that kind of fear.
11:38It isn't just the visuals,
11:44it's the suffocating tension,
11:46that feeling of being trapped between the living and the dead that really gets under your skin.
11:55Number 10.
11:56The Cemetery Scene.
11:57The Nun.
11:58There might be some unintentionally funny scenes in The Nun,
12:01but this definitely is not one of them.
12:04Picture a shadowy cemetery being trapped in an underground coffin
12:08and the horrifying realization that you're not alone.
12:11That's a sequence that taps into our deepest fears.
12:22Corin Hardy nails the terror by suspending the camera above Father Burke's head,
12:27creating an intense close-up that makes us feel just as trapped.
12:31The muffling sound, creaking noise and pounding heartbeat
12:34crank up the claustrophobia to unbearable levels.
12:38No wonder Demian Bacher was terrified while filming this.
12:51Who wouldn't be?
12:52Honestly, it's the kind of scene that feels all too real and otherworldly all at once.
12:58And that is horror done right.
12:59How did you get in there?
13:01The ground was coffered.
13:03There's a powerful evil presence in this place.
13:06Number 9.
13:07Mullins Stalking Carol and Nancy.
13:09Annabelle Creation.
13:11Nighttime is when Mrs. Mullins gets her powers.
13:13Annabelle Creation was full of many surprisingly good scares,
13:17and this Mullins scene is one of the best.
13:19By having the scene open with Carol and Nancy laughing and goofing off,
13:22the movie allows us to feel relaxed with the characters.
13:25Even when the first bell rings, the characters make a joke out of it and ease the atmosphere.
13:37However, things get real serious real fast.
13:40The use of sound is brilliant, as the ominous noise of the bell conjures feelings of danger,
13:48and the subsequent silence allows us to once again feel at ease,
13:52before we're shocked with the final jump scare.
13:55And damn, that face is terrifying.
13:57If there's one negative thing we can say about The Laundry Ghost,
14:12it's that it was shown far too much in the ads that its effect during the actual movie was somewhat lost.
14:17Just imagine if this scare took you by surprise,
14:19instead of having it spoiled by the countless trailers and TV spots.
14:22It really is a great, imaginative, and original scare,
14:30as we truly do not expect anything ominous to happen.
14:33Sure, the coming storm is a sign,
14:35but there is zero indication that a ghost is standing directly in front of Lorraine.
14:39This is a jump scare done right.
14:42Can we get more of these, please?
14:43Number 7. Amityville. The Conjuring 2.
14:57After everything we've seen,
14:59there isn't much that rattles either of us anymore.
15:03We didn't think The Conjuring franchise could one-up the creepy Annabelle opening from the first movie,
15:08but we were wrong.
15:09The Amityville opening to The Conjuring 2 is a masterclass in how editing can be used to fantastic and terrifying effect.
15:20We've seen the story of the Amityville murders numerous times throughout the years,
15:24but The Conjuring 2 takes an original visual approach to the story.
15:27The jerky editing style of the scene is extremely unsettling,
15:31and gives it the suitable feeling of a nightmare,
15:33especially when the mother suddenly turns to the camera.
15:36I'm so tired.
15:37Love or hate these movies?
15:42There's no denying that they involve some great and original filmmaking techniques.
15:50Number 6. Arnie Kills Bruno. The Conjuring. The Devil Made Me Do It.
15:55There's no arguing it.
15:56This 2021 entry is not the strongest in the franchise.
16:00But that does not mean it's without the bone-chilling moments The Conjuring is known for.
16:04One of the film's most horrifying scenes comes when Arnie kills Bruno.
16:08Or should we say, when the devil does.
16:11It's a bizarre moment with a disorienting mix of reality and supernatural distortion.
16:16Arnie, help me!
16:20As Arnie slips into a frenzied state,
16:25you can feel that something is about to go terribly wrong.
16:27The dim lighting and flickering effects keep you on edge.
16:31Never quite sure what's happening until it's too late.
16:34What the hell?
16:37Rather than showing Bruno's death up front,
16:45the director lets your imagination do the work,
16:48which makes the whole thing feel disturbingly real.
16:55Some people may enjoy watching TV with the ghost of a lonely old man,
17:07but not this old man.
17:08The scene utilizes growing apprehension to fantastic effect.
17:15We obviously know that something isn't right,
17:20and we watch with increasing uneasiness as various creepy but relatively harmless events play out throughout the scene.
17:32We finally catch a glimpse of the man in the TV,
17:35and right when we feel as if we're about to burst from the disquiet,
17:39the movie utilizes a perfectly timed jump scare to unleash all the built-up tension it accumulated
17:44throughout the preceding moments.
17:46It's a jump scare, yes, but it's an earned jump scare.
17:53Number 4. The Basement Elevator, Annabelle.
17:58Annabelle may not be everyone's favorite film in the Conjuring universe,
18:01but it still has a few good scares, including the basement elevator scene.
18:05Director John R. Leonetti employs many James Wan-esque Conjuring scare tactics,
18:10including the emergence of something in the corner of the frame,
18:13in this case a baby carriage,
18:14a sudden supernatural jump scare,
18:16and incredible silent tension in the case of the elevator.
18:20All these tactics are very effective and creepy.
18:28We expect something to jump out or emerge from the shadows,
18:30and when it doesn't,
18:32our concern grows until it becomes unbearable.
18:35This scene shows restraint,
18:37and it's all the better for it.
18:38Number 3. Hide and Clap, The Conjuring.
18:56Who is that?
18:57This is arguably the quintessential scene of The Conjuring series,
19:01even if it's not necessarily the scariest.
19:04It was plastered all over the trailers and posters,
19:06and has since become the de facto representation of the entire franchise,
19:10and for good reason.
19:12It's an incredibly original scene,
19:13and the image of the clapping ghost hands is enough to send viewers into fits.
19:17Who's ever down there to lock you in now?
19:26Our imaginations immediately take over,
19:29and we begin to think of what malicious entity could be clapping
19:32and leading Carolyn into danger.
19:34And the final clap,
19:35coming after minutes' worth of unbelievable nervousness,
19:38will arguably go down as one of the most iconic scares of the decade.
19:49Number 2. The Valak painting, The Conjuring 2.
19:52And with this scene alone,
20:04we all fell in love with Valak.
20:07The Conjuring 2 is filled with many terrific scenes,
20:10as we've established,
20:11but there's something truly original and fantastic about this terrifying sequence,
20:15which elevates it far above the others.
20:17It's a brilliant piece of staging and lighting,
20:19especially when the lamp goes out and the image of Valak remains standing in the shadows.
20:24The ambiguity regarding its true nature is terrific,
20:28and results in borderline intolerable anxiety.
20:31It's enough to send constant chills down your spine,
20:34and for you to seek relief by looking away from the screen.
20:36It's okay, we do not blame you.

21:01Number 1. Bathsheba on the wardrobe, The Conjuring.
21:04Now this is how you surprise the audience.
21:11This scene begins like many we've seen before.
21:13A door bangs and a character checks it out.
21:16Yawn.
21:17And then the camera pans up.
21:19The scene brilliantly utilizes our expectations
21:21and the conventions of the horror genre to its benefit.
21:24We expect the scene to be nothing but the cliche
21:26and seemingly inevitable character checks out the closet moment.
21:29We aren't expecting someone to actually be there,
21:32let alone attack.
21:32It's a fantastic piece of writing and filmmaking,
21:35especially by having the camera play such a major role in the reveal.
21:39This scene proves why James Wan is one of the leading directors in horror today.
21:44Which of these scenes terrified you the most?
