00:30He was big enough and mean enough to get his own way
00:35At the same time, he was a tremendous performer
00:40He was destined to become one of World Wrestling Federation's most notorious stars
00:45They hated me, but they loved me. They loved to hate me
00:51I'm the guy that went to school with you people out there when you was growing up
00:56It took your lunch money from you
00:57That was my job, to be bad, and I could back it up
01:00But one fateful encounter in New York would destroy his career in an instant
01:05To make sure that nobody knew the secrets inside the locker room
01:10You know, standard question
01:11I think this is fake
01:12What's your response to the people who point out that this is fake?
01:16You think it's fake?
01:18Holy shit, what the hell just happened here?
01:21In an era when wrestlers lived by an honor code of protecting the business
01:25No one took it more to heart than David Schultz
01:28And one single action cost him everything
01:32They called me back and said nobody won't sign a contract with you
01:35You're too mean, you're too bad
01:37I'm anything but fake
01:38I'm an entertainer, con man, whatever
01:42I am not a fake
01:44For most of the 20th century, professional wrestling was a closed society
01:57Where the rules of the game were never revealed to the paying public
02:01Wrestlers lived by a secret code
02:04That maintained the illusion of good and evil in the squared circle
02:08Make the fights look real, even if the matches are predetermined
02:12But at the dawn of a pro wrestling revolution
02:15The old traditions were changing faster than some performers could keep up with
02:20Okay, this is one of my storage units here
02:26Oh yeah, here we go, baby
02:29Just come on in, bring yourself on in here
02:31Watch your step
02:32Watch the spiders and the snakes and all that
02:35Here's a card that I used to use
02:37It said you've just been patronized by the world's greatest pro wrestler
02:42Where's this thing come from?
02:43I don't know how they get it look so lively, you know, just like me
02:47This bag here has got some very special items
02:52One of them is a stun gun
02:55And you take this and you pull it back here
02:59And when you hold it on the guy
03:01You just tell him you're under arrest, get your hands up
03:05If you don't obey, I'm gonna shoot you
03:09And they say, hey man
03:10Boom
03:12I'm Dr. D. David Schultz
03:14Probably the greatest pro wrestler of all time, in my opinion
03:17You know, about 72, 73
03:20I was watching wrestling on TV one time
03:23And I said, well, this is not hard
03:25So I went by to see Herb Welch
03:27This one right here is Herb Welch
03:30The one that trained me
03:31Herb Welch, how to become a champion
03:34Herb Welch had been one of the biggest wrestling stars in the South
03:37From the time of the Depression through the 1950s
03:40He had learned from the pioneers
03:42The original pro wrestlers that came from the carnivals
03:45It was the last place in the country that you could go
03:48To literally learn from a guy
03:50Who was there at the formation of organized professional wrestling
03:54I'm Jim Cornette
03:55And for nearly 40 years
03:56I've been a promoter, a matchmaker, announcer, manager
03:59And a historian in professional wrestling
04:01He lived in Dyesburg
04:03I went out there and pulled the truck over
04:05And he'd come out on the porch
04:06And we sat there and talked a while
04:08And he said, yeah, I'll train you
04:10And when you wanna start
04:11His method of training was to take these guys
04:14Into his barn on his farm
04:16And beat the piss out of them
04:17Herb Welch was such a salty, mean old bastard
04:20That he would go in the locker room
04:22And he would take a dump
04:23And he would take a handful of it
04:25And he would rub it in his armpit
04:28And then when he got out there
04:29The first thing he'd do is
04:30He'd lock up with the guy and grab a headlock
04:32And start grinding that head as hard as he could
04:35Until the guy was screaming
04:37Please let me go
04:38I'll do anything you want
04:39Please let me go
04:40They was trying to hurt me
04:41Say, can you be one of us?
04:43Are you capable of doing this?
04:46I'd already gotten in pretty good shape
04:48After about a month and a half, two months
04:50He was getting wrestlers
04:51Stopped by and worked out with me
04:52And these boys told Herb
04:54Said, you gotta do something to this kid, man
04:55We can't handle him
04:56We do something to him
04:57He fights back
04:58Herb Welch sat David Schultz down then
05:00And said, you've got what it takes
05:02To make it in this business
05:04Now we're gonna have to smarten you up, son
05:06He said, well, you're hurting everybody
05:08You're too damn stiff
05:10Well, he never told me any different
05:12I thought you was fighting for your life
05:13I thought it was real
05:14I thought it was 100% real
05:16The training that David Schultz got from Herb Welch
05:19Centered on one thing
05:21It's the world of kayfabe
05:22Kayfabe means you don't be seen together
05:26Right after you had a bad match out here
05:28Blood and guts and everything
05:30And then 10 miles down the road
05:31They catch you at Shoney's eating together
05:33No, that's supposed to be your enemy back then
05:36Continuing the aura that wrestling
05:38And the people in it are real
05:40Those are the secrets of wrestling
05:42Protect the business
05:43Don't spill the secrets
05:45You're in a secret society
05:46This is our world
05:47It was like being in the mafia
05:49What does it take to be a pro wrestling?
05:51Well, you need to learn how to work
05:54The holds and the moves and the timing
05:57Know what's gonna make the people mad
06:02Know what's gonna make them feel good
06:07David Schultz found success in wrestling
06:12Just being David Schultz turned up to 20
06:15Is this crazy, you know, redneck hillbilly from Tennessee
06:18You think you're a man?
06:20You ain't nothing, boy
06:20Through it all, Schultz did what he was trained to do
06:23Never break kayfabe
06:25A lot of boys thought I was the meanest baddest they ever seen
06:29Because I made them work hard in the ring
06:31Hogan was one of them
06:33This man is not a television illusion
06:37He is not an artist's conception
06:42He is not a figment of the imagination
06:46He is the Hulk
06:50In the late 1970s, Hulk Hogan is an up-and-coming wrestler from Augusta, Georgia
06:56He first crossed paths with Schultz, working the Florida circuit
07:00I thought he was just a big old bodybuilder that wanted to get into business
07:05And he was
07:06He had no money
07:08He had nothing
07:09He was living in a van
07:10And I let him come into my apartment with me
07:13And share my apartment with me in Pensacola
07:15We've become real good friends
07:16The two are natural adversaries
07:19And it's not long before their epic confrontations attract the attention
07:23Of Vince McMahon
07:25Whose World Wrestling Federation is expanding nationwide
07:28And in 1983, McMahon handpicks Hogan to be his centerpiece attraction
07:34Making his first appearance in this arena
07:37Ladies and gentlemen, Hulk Hogan
07:41In 1983, Vince McMahon was systematically going around
07:45Filling spots for his plan to take over the wrestling world
07:48Why did Hulk go with Vince to the WWF?
07:51Money
07:52Of course, Vince told him, we're going to put the belt on you
07:54You're going to be our number one guy
07:56Hogan wanted me to come up and work with him
07:59Because he told Vince, hey, I can make money with this guy
08:02Schultz is brought into the WWF to be Hogan's top rival
08:07As their in-ring chemistry was already a proven draw
08:11Vince called me and said, I need you to come on up
08:15And you ain't got to worry about making money anymore
08:18We're going to be sure you make all the money you need
08:20For the rest of your life
08:21You ain't got to worry about it
08:22Vince McMahon, he said, David
08:24I want you to be the baddest heel around
08:26Baddest bad guy there is
08:28You're going to be
08:28They told me the competition was here
08:31They told me the greatest wrestlers in the world was here
08:33If that's an example of great wrestlers, baby
08:37I'm going to walk over them like a stadium roller
08:39He wasn't a cookie cutter heel
08:42He was a little wilder, a little crazier
08:44And that type of thing was starting to get over
08:46They had the footage on TNT, Tuesday Night Titans
08:49Where they go to Schultz's house
08:50And he's firing rifles off in the living room
08:53Whoa, you stupid idiot
08:55You know, telling his wife to go scrub the floors
08:58Get up and get us something to eat or something
08:59Woman, get in there and get that done
09:01Kids, get in there and do this
09:02I'll slap that smile off your face
09:04Don't smile at me, boy
09:05Vince said the sheriff's department
09:07And the state police came to his office
09:10That Monday morning
09:11And wanted to know my address, where I live
09:13They had warrants for my arrest
09:15For child abuse and spousal abuse
09:18And Vince said, oh my God
09:20That was a show
09:22And the guys couldn't believe it
09:24That was all Vince
09:26Those wasn't my guns
09:27Vince had somebody at the TV station bring no gun
09:30This in here is worth a lot of money
09:32Everything I got is worth a lot of money
09:33Wasn't my house
09:34Wasn't my wife
09:35Wasn't my kid
09:36Get up, get up, get up, go
09:39Get up, get up, stand up
09:40All that was Vince McMahon
09:41To make people hate me
09:43And the more they hated me
09:45The more money we made
09:46McMahon has hit on a formula that works
09:49And his empire is growing rapidly
09:52However, as a result
09:53It starts to attract unwanted attention
09:57I liked it as a kid
09:59And now I thought it was kind of silly
10:02And hypocritical
10:03I'm John Stossel
10:05I was a consumer reporter
10:06Who became a general reporter
10:09At 2020
10:10And you know, sometimes I wonder about
10:13The credentials of these doctors
10:14Who promote vitamins
10:16In the early 1980s
10:18John Stossel is a rising journalist
10:20For ABC News
10:21Who's made a name for himself
10:22Taking down shady companies
10:24And corrupt businessmen
10:25How can you say it might not be harmful
10:28Yet most of the people
10:29Who die of lung cancer smoke
10:31Now, Stossel has chosen
10:33To turn his investigative lens
10:35Towards another highly lucrative industry
10:37One he believes is deceiving its audience
10:40I was a wrestler in high school
10:42And I was always a little annoyed
10:44That people, some people
10:46Believed that pro-wrestling was real
10:49Rather than a scripted event
10:51Where the winner is preordained
10:53And people dress up in funny clothes
10:56And pretend anger
10:57And bullshit
10:59It had leaked out that 2020
11:01Was going to do a piece
11:02And obviously if it's ABC Network News
11:04It's going to be an expose
11:06I just thought it was interesting
11:09That this big, growing, successful business
11:11Was based on bullshit
11:13I mean, cleverly done
11:15Athletic bullshit
11:16But lies
11:18The worst thing that could ever happen
11:20Everybody's going to want to know
11:22Is wrestling fake or not
11:24The number one cardinal rule
11:33Of professional wrestling
11:34For a hundred years
11:35Was don't expose the secrets
11:36One of the biggest
11:37Most famous exposés
11:39Happened in New York
11:42In the 1930s
11:44A thrilling and dramatic expose
11:46Of modern wrestling fakes
11:47Coming soon
11:48In New York
11:49Newspaper exposés
11:51Killed wrestling
11:51For almost 15 years
11:53Everybody realized
11:54This is our society
11:55This is kayfabe
11:56We can't reveal what's going on
11:58It'll cost us all our livelihoods
12:0050 years later
12:02The stakes are just as high
12:03For Vince McMahon's
12:04World Wrestling Federation
12:06And for his newest superstar
12:08David Schultz
12:09Kayfabe is a religion
12:11I don't care what you think
12:12I don't care what the people
12:14Think about me
12:14I don't care what nobody
12:16Thinks about me
12:16I don't care what you
12:17Think about me
12:18It was my business
12:20If I didn't observe
12:21Kayfabe
12:22They'd look at me and say
12:23Ah, he's a phony
12:24No
12:25I was a pro wrestler
12:26I come to that
12:28W-I-W-I-L, baby
12:29Where the toughest
12:30In the world
12:31Is wrestling right now
12:33Being a pro wrestler
12:34Means that I had standards
12:36I had to stand up to
12:37That's the only way
12:38I could make money
12:39Have high standards
12:40As the WWF's popularity
12:42Is reaching new heights
12:44ABC News reporter
12:45John Stossel
12:47Must somehow infiltrate
12:48Wrestling's secret society
12:50If he's to expose
12:51What happens
12:52Behind the scenes
12:53We either did a survey
12:55Or found a survey
12:56That about a third
12:57Of the people
12:57Who attended the events
12:59Thought it was real
13:00This is real
13:01Yeah, I think so, yes
13:03And I don't like
13:04People being bullshitted
13:05And couldn't do a story
13:07Unless we could find
13:09Some insider
13:10Who would say
13:12Yeah, here's how
13:13We fake this and that
13:14And was willing
13:15To go into a ring
13:16And demonstrate
13:17And eventually
13:18We found
13:19Eddie Mansfield
13:20I'm the continental lover
13:22Eddie Mansfield
13:23A rich woman's lover
13:24In a poor girl's dream
13:25The continental lover
13:27Eddie
13:27I left the state of Georgia
13:30When I was 17
13:31To go play baseball
13:32When I hurt my arm
13:33And I couldn't play
13:34Baseball anymore
13:35I had to find
13:36Something to do
13:36You couldn't just
13:37Drink every day
13:38And you wrecked
13:39Saw Cowboy
13:40And so I always
13:41Liked wrestling
13:42When I was breaking
13:43Into business
13:43I was kind of
13:44Self-taught a little bit
13:45But the bottom line is
13:46I could draw money
13:47And I could talk
13:48On that mic
13:49First I'm gonna chase
13:50You around the place
13:51And then I'm gonna
13:51Erase your face
13:52And I was very fortunate
13:53The only thing that
13:55Really shocked me
13:56Was the payoffs
13:58You know
13:58You're drawing
13:59Sellout crowds
14:00And you're getting
14:01Not even pennies
14:02On a dollar
14:02With no health care
14:04No nothing
14:04That's where I'm
14:06Having the problem
14:06Well how come
14:07You don't treat us
14:08Like professional
14:10Athletes are supposed
14:10To be treated
14:11Not like the scum
14:13Of the earth
14:14Why don't you give
14:15These guys health
14:16Insurance
14:17In a 401k
14:18Set an example
14:19You wanna be
14:20A big time promoter
14:21Let's set an example
14:22You know
14:24I didn't quit
14:25The wrestling business
14:26The wrestling business
14:27Quit me
14:27How did you get
14:28In that position
14:29Well I wouldn't
14:30Kick back 20%
14:31Of my money
14:32The booker at the time
14:33Wanted to control people
14:34They did it to the other guys
14:36Who agreed to it
14:37But I didn't agree to it
14:39And then my bookings
14:40Start
14:41I mean boom
14:42As quick as I went up
14:44I was out
14:45I said
14:46You do this to me
14:48I will promise you
14:50I'll go on national television
14:52And I will tell
14:53The whole world
14:54What kind of scam
14:56You're running on
14:57On the guys
14:57I said try me
15:00Well he did
15:03I made one phone call
15:04ABC
15:05Stossel and his producers
15:08At 2020
15:08Arrange an interview
15:09With Eddie Mansfield
15:11Who agrees to reveal
15:13The tricks
15:13Of the trade
15:14You couldn't just say
15:15Hey this is fake
15:16You had to
15:17Both reveal
15:19And entertain
15:20People
15:21So I needed
15:22A genuine
15:22Professional wrestler
15:24To demonstrate
15:25And so
15:27When was the first time
15:28You met John Stossel
15:29When we shot
15:31You know
15:33I talked to them
15:34And we were kind of
15:35Laying out the show
15:36And how it would run
15:37And all that
15:38John Stossel
15:39Come down
15:40Went in the ring with him
15:41Pro wrestlers
15:42Show him how
15:42Stuff's done
15:43He lands on his forearms
15:46And elbows
15:47Not on me
15:47He showed me
15:49How to jump
15:50And be thrown
15:51And some of the tricks
15:53You just take off
15:55On your own
15:56Right
15:56Why didn't they come get me
15:58Let me take him
15:59Into the ring
15:59I could show him
16:00How it's done
16:01No
16:02You had to have
16:02Two wimps out there
16:03Stossel
16:04And Mansfield
16:05Good
16:07Mansfield
16:08Tried to give
16:09The standard expose
16:11That yes
16:11We're told
16:12To win and lose
16:13Is this real wrestling
16:14No
16:14Not real
16:16No
16:16Not at all
16:17I mean
16:18If somebody believed that
16:19That'd be stupid
16:19But also
16:21He went so far
16:22As to show
16:23The blade
16:24Nobody wanted
16:26Fake blood
16:27Where people could find it
16:28That would be proof
16:29That what we were doing
16:30Was bullshit
16:31So everybody bled
16:32For real
16:33Two ways to do that
16:35The easy way
16:35And the hard way
16:36The easy way
16:38Is with a blade
16:39You know
16:41They were just
16:41On me
16:42Just show the blade
16:43Show the blade
16:43Show the blade
16:44I'm going
16:45Hey what about
16:46All this other stuff
16:46I need to talk about
16:47They had to push it
16:48Push it
16:48Push it
16:49You know what I mean
16:49And so
16:50And I
16:53And I
16:53I did it
16:54You go just like that
16:57And then gradually
17:01During the match
17:02It would drip around
17:03Over your face
17:03That's it
17:04See if I was sweating
17:05It'd pour
17:06I was pretty shocked
17:10And also something
17:11About hiding a razor blade
17:13In their mouths
17:14Some keep the blade
17:15Right here
17:15In their mouth
17:16Some in their tapes
17:19These are tough dudes
17:22Who risk a lot
17:23For this sport
17:23A sport
17:24I shouldn't call it a sport
17:25For this
17:26Entertainment
17:28John Stossel
17:31Is only focused
17:32On anything
17:33To expose the business
17:35And I wasn't there
17:36To expose the business
17:37I was there
17:38To help the business
17:39And the promoters
17:41Are very
17:42Ruthless people
17:44And
17:44They don't take care
17:46Of the people
17:46That make them
17:47The money
17:47I wanted to get
17:48The health care
17:49And the benefits
17:50For the boys
17:50He come back
17:52And says
17:52Oh I wanted to do it
17:53For insurance
17:54This guy
17:55He just couldn't get
17:55No work
17:56Nobody wanted to use him
17:57He went worth a shit
17:58Eddie Mansfield's
18:00A has-been
18:01Never was
18:02Couldn't get
18:02Where he wanted to be
18:03Didn't have the talent
18:04And still tries to claim
18:05He did it for the boys
18:07Bottom line is
18:08It's time now
18:09For them to step up
18:10And protect the guys
18:12Where they have a future
18:13When they get old
18:14You know
18:15I made a statement one time
18:16I said
18:17Abraham Lincoln
18:18Freed the slaves
18:19But Abraham Lincoln
18:20Forgot to free
18:21The pro wrestlers
18:22Armed with insider knowledge
18:25Stossel sets out
18:27To confront the industry
18:28Over Mansfield's allegations
18:30I thought
18:33Well we need to have
18:34The usual person
18:36From the professional
18:37Organization saying
18:38Oh this isn't fake
18:39This is all real
18:40And so we went
18:42To Madison Square Garden
18:43And I guess Vince McMahon
18:44Okayed it
18:45Or we wouldn't have been there
18:46I arrived at the arena
18:49And of course
18:50Downstairs
18:51We walked through
18:52Where the wrestlers
18:53Come in
18:53And the fans
18:54Some people hollering
18:55Some people cussing
18:56Go in the dressing room
18:57Talk to all the boys
18:58Hello
18:59Sit down
18:59Put my boots on
19:00Like I always do
19:01Get ready
19:02And that's when Vince
19:03Come walking in
19:04And he said
19:05Listen we got a guy out here
19:07Making a joke
19:08Out of the business
19:09I want you to go out
19:10And interview with him
19:11Blast him
19:12Tear his ass up
19:13Stay in character
19:14Dr. D
19:15We were backstage
19:16And I talked to the guy
19:19They call the Iron Sheik
19:20And then McMahon said
19:23Here's another guy
19:24And then Schultz came out
19:27He was a little frightening
19:30Why are you called Dr. D?
19:32Why not?
19:34This was a recipe for disaster
19:37I'm thinking
19:38Why would anybody
19:40Have gone up to Schultz?
19:41Is this a good business?
19:42Yeah it's a good business
19:43I wouldn't be in it if it wasn't
19:44Why is it a good business?
19:45Because only the tough survive
19:47That's the reason you ain't in it
19:48And this punk holding the camera
19:49Reading he ain't in it
19:50Reading these rednecks out here
19:51Ain't in it
19:51Because it's a tough business
19:53I was feeling uncomfortable
19:55All the way
19:56And almost didn't ask him
19:59The question
20:00I'll ask you the standard question
20:02And I said
20:03A standard question, huh?
20:05Okay
20:05Standard question
20:07I think this is fake
20:08I think it's fake
20:09Now I'm thinking
20:10Vince wanted me to stay in character
20:12Dr. D
20:13Slap hell
20:14How somebody say that
20:15I think this is fake
20:16You think it's fake?
20:19What's that?
20:19Is that fake?
20:20Holy shit
20:21What the hell just happened here?
20:32Boom
20:32There goes Stossel down
20:34Go back before the first slap
20:36Right there
20:37Look, look, look
20:38Now that I watch that back
20:39He didn't even hit him
20:40Nearly as hard as he could have
20:42He didn't even draw back
20:43He just
20:43Boom
20:44I mean, still
20:44It's David Schultz
20:45But he could have
20:46He could have
20:47Paralyzed him
20:48If he'd have drawn back
20:49The swung
20:50I think this is fake
20:51You think it's fake?
20:52Whack
20:53Whacked me in the ear
20:54And knocked me down
20:56And then I stupidly got up again
20:58Huh?
20:59What the hell's wrong with you?
20:59That's open hand slap, huh?
21:01I was always told
21:02Man, get up
21:02You gotta knock him back down
21:04Because if he gets up
21:05He might hurt you
21:06You think it's fake?
21:07You're talking about
21:08He whacked me in the other ear
21:10My ears were ringing
21:11What do you mean?
21:12Hey
21:12I was stunned
21:14And a little scared
21:15And that's why
21:15I crawled off
21:16I didn't want to get
21:17Hit again
21:19That's why I told them
21:22Specifically
21:23Not to interview
21:24David Schultz
21:25Because I told them
21:27I said
21:27If you ask him
21:28Stupid questions
21:29You're gonna get slapped
21:30I was angry
21:33And stunned
21:35I also thought
21:36Well, that's a clip
21:37We'll use at the end
21:38Of our 2020 story
21:40I didn't think
21:42It'd be anything
21:43I figured
21:45You slapped him
21:46For rude manners
21:47Like my mama
21:49Would slap me
21:50If I did something wrong
21:51In a minute
21:52And not think about it
21:54Boom
21:54Moments after flooring
21:572020 reporter
21:58John Stossel
21:59David Schultz
22:01Heads to the ring
22:02For his match
22:02With Japanese
22:03Wrestling icon
22:04Antonio Inoki
22:05He's unaware
22:07Of the gravity
22:08Of the situation
22:09Developing
22:10Backstage
22:10Doctor's in trouble
22:12Oh
22:13What a move
22:14Karate kick
22:15Right
22:15It's all over
22:18It is all over
22:19After the match
22:20Vince said
22:20Just go to the hotel
22:21Because Stossel
22:22Sanny's hurt
22:23And all that
22:23He's talking about
22:24Pressing charges
22:25For what?
22:28Vince said
22:28Don't even take a shower
22:29Go over to the hotel
22:30I just put my sweatpants on
22:32Sweatshirt
22:32Grabbed my bag
22:34And was gone
22:35Vince had to be thinking
22:38Starting at that point
22:40I'm going to have to do
22:41Something with Schultz
22:41Or I'm going to have to
22:42Eliminate Schultz
22:43From the equation
22:44Next day I went up
22:46To Stanford
22:47And seen him
22:48He was telling me
22:49About the New York
22:50Athletic Commission
22:50Suspending me
22:52And told me
22:53He's going to pay the fine
22:54He's going to get
22:54Everything straightened out
22:55Don't worry about it
22:56He's going to send me
22:57To Japan
22:58And let this thing
22:59Cool over
23:00Eight weeks
23:01After the incident
23:02John Stossel's
23:032020 report airs
23:05And the wrestling community
23:06Is universally outraged
23:08You are trying to
23:09Kill our business
23:09Take money away from us
23:11And our families
23:12You little pissant
23:13John Stossel
23:14That's what all the wrestlers
23:15Thought about him
23:16Eddie the body slammed me
23:17But Eddie says
23:19Anybody can do it
23:20Eddie Mansfield
23:21They hated him
23:22South collusion
23:23I had death threats
23:25People trying to plant
23:26Cocaine on me
23:27And I knew I just had
23:28To get out of the south
23:29You know before I either
23:30Went to jail for killing somebody
23:32Or somebody killing me
23:34I moved into New York
23:36I had four FBI guys
23:38With me on the plane
23:39To make sure I got
23:41To New York safe
23:42You're not messing
23:43With the promoters
23:44When you expose the business
23:45You were messing with the boys
23:46They fear more
23:48About what their friends
23:49And what their cohorts
23:50Will do to them
23:52Than the penalty
23:53They can get from the law
23:54When you look back
23:56I should have just
23:57Got my butt up
23:58And just left
23:59If the deal feels bad
24:01The deal is bad
24:03They cost me my career
24:05But that's okay
24:06They did me a favor
24:08Because I'm better off
24:10Than A
24:10Than I ever would have
24:12Been in wrestling
24:13Pro wrestling
24:15Doesn't take care
24:16Of the people
24:16That make us
24:17The money
24:17And it never has
24:19And just preaching
24:20Oh you gotta protect
24:21The business
24:22You gotta do this
24:23Well why do I wanna
24:24Protect something
24:25That doesn't protect me
24:26Vince McMahon sends
24:29Schultz to wrestle
24:30In Japan
24:31Hoping the follow up
24:32From the incident
24:32Will die down
24:33Instead the controversy
24:35Follows Schultz east
24:37First thing they wanted
24:39Me to do in Japan
24:40Was hit a reporter
24:42And I told them
24:44I'm not hitting nobody
24:45Unless you write it down
24:47As part of the script
24:48And they did write it down
24:50How was that set up?
24:52Well he come into
24:53The dressing room
24:54Had a camera
24:54I told him
24:55I'd just slap you
24:56Upside the head
24:56You'd fall down
24:57Then the camera guy
24:59Would take a picture
25:00Of you laying on the floor
25:01And the news
25:03Tokyo news
25:03Saying you know
25:04Dr. D comes now to Japan
25:06And slaps a reporter
25:08Like he did in New York
25:09Back at ABC News
25:13More than a thousand people
25:15Call in to inquire
25:16About John Stossel's well-being
25:18After seeing his report
25:20On television
25:21My ears were ringing
25:23And I had pain
25:24When there was a loud noise
25:26My daughter was a baby
25:28At the time
25:29And when she cried
25:30It hurt my ears
25:31And it made it tough
25:31For me to change her diapers
25:33Or parent well
25:35I thought that
25:37McMahon and his group
25:38Should be taught
25:40A lesson
25:40That they can't go
25:41Beating up reporters
25:42And I sued for damages
25:44I wanted some compensation
25:46For my pain
25:47What Stossel don't understand
25:51Is I went to his lawyer
25:53And talked to his lawyer
25:54Before Vince ever got sued
25:56Or anything else
25:57My lawyer that I had
25:58At that time
25:59Told me
26:00You need to go tell him
26:01The whole story
26:01And take care of yourself
26:03Because Vince is not
26:04Going to take care of you
26:05At the WWF
26:07It's clear to McMahon
26:08That the Stossel incident
26:10Is not going away
26:11And he needs Schultz
26:13To help him solve it
26:14He didn't know
26:15He was going to get sued
26:16By John Stossel
26:17And when he got sued
26:19My name wasn't in it
26:20So
26:21He was mad
26:23I went by the office
26:25And that's when he wanted me
26:26To sign a paper
26:28Saying that
26:28It was all my body
26:30Under my own influence
26:32I know
26:33That ain't going to happen
26:34I'm not going to
26:35Take blame for you
26:37What you had me to do
26:38I'll sign a paper
26:40Saying I did
26:40What you told me to do
26:42John Stossel said
26:43I hit him in both cheeks
26:45The right cheek
26:46And then the left cheek
26:47On their position
26:48And anybody
26:49Watches the tapes
26:50If you got any sense
26:51Can see
26:52I never hit his ears
26:53While Schultz is falling
26:55Out of favor
26:56At the WWF
26:57Stossel's lawsuit
26:59Is intensifying
27:00As part of the
27:02Pre-trial prep
27:04You go to their doctor
27:05So their doctor
27:06Can examine you
27:07They sent me to a
27:10Highfalutin guy
27:11Who without examining me
27:13Said
27:13I think you're suffering
27:14From a
27:15Jurosomatic illness
27:16What?
27:17I said
27:17A Jurosomatic illness
27:19You're holding on
27:21To your pain
27:22Because you're involved
27:22In a lawsuit
27:23And I said
27:24Screw you
27:25You're the
27:26Paid lawyer
27:27For the defendants
27:28And you haven't even
27:29Examined me
27:30And you're saying this
27:31What was the outcome
27:32Of that situation?
27:34Years later
27:35They settled
27:35I got $280,000
27:37Do some people
27:39Psychologically feel
27:40Pain longer
27:41Because of that
27:42As this
27:42Doctor claimed
27:44Maybe
27:45Maybe he was right
27:47Because I held on
27:49To my pain
27:50But it gradually
27:50Did go away
27:51When I got paid
27:53As the blowback
28:03From the 2020 piece
28:05Dissipates
28:05McMahon focuses
28:07On the launch
28:08Of his biggest event yet
28:09Vince's concept
28:11For Wrestlemania
28:12Was the biggest
28:13Wrestling event
28:14Ever held
28:14Times 10
28:15An over the top
28:16Closed circuit
28:17Globally broadcast
28:19Extravaganza
28:20That would combine
28:21Celebrities
28:21And wrestling matches
28:23Looking to appeal
28:24To the widest
28:25Possible audience
28:26McMahon adds
28:28A Hollywood actor
28:29To the roster
28:29And puts him
28:30At the top
28:31Of the card
28:32Mr. T was one of the
28:33Biggest television stars
28:34In the country
28:35In 1985
28:36He had been a star
28:37Of the A-Team
28:38With George Pappard
28:39You want him?
28:40No, you take him
28:42He's working with
28:44Sylvester Stallone
28:45Kidney
28:46He had a great body
28:47And a mohawk
28:48And he wore the chains
28:49But he looked the part
28:50And he talked the part
28:51And could make people
28:52Believe he was the part
28:53You teach me how to
28:54Pump by
28:54Get my pythons ready
28:55And I'm glad
28:56You brought me here
28:56The WWF positions
28:58Hulk Hogan and Mr. T
28:59Front and center
29:00In their nationwide promotion
29:02But Schultz's name
29:04Is missing entirely
29:05I didn't think
29:06Mr. T should be coming in
29:08To go in a wrestling match
29:09When he's never wrestled
29:10Or anything
29:11And pay him
29:12The more he pays
29:13Any of his wrestlers
29:14I said
29:15That's a joke
29:16You're putting T
29:17In a Wrestlemania 1?
29:18What about me?
29:20Where you putting me?
29:21Schultz watches on
29:23As buzz around Wrestlemania
29:24Grows bigger by the day
29:26At a WWF event
29:28In Los Angeles
29:29Tensions backstage
29:30Escalate even further
29:32Mr. T and some of his
29:34Hollywood friends
29:35Were there to see the matches
29:37And I'm sure he was
29:38Being treated as a guest
29:39And just being allowed
29:40The run of the place
29:41I believe that
29:43Schultz genuinely
29:45Resented T's presence there
29:48And didn't want him
29:48In the locker room
29:49Because that was
29:50Reserved for the boys
29:51That was a sanctuary
29:52Did you have a
29:53Physical altercation
29:54With Mr. T that night?
29:55No
29:56Mr. T was in the hallway
29:58Talking to me
29:58At night
29:59Jay Strongbow
30:00Was the agent
30:01On the job
30:02He come out
30:03And seen him
30:03In the hallway
30:04With me
30:04And he said
30:05David
30:05Vince had told me
30:06If you was gonna
30:07Go out there
30:08And bother Mr. T
30:09To fire you
30:11Well you better
30:11Fire me then
30:12He said okay you're fired
30:14I get dressed and go down
30:18To the ring
30:19To watch the match
30:20I was just going out
30:21To see Toya Tanaka
30:22Good friend of mine
30:23He's sitting with Mr. T
30:24So I went to the ring side
30:26And the cops come up
30:27Jay Strongbow
30:28Called the cops
30:29And told them
30:30That I was a
30:31Fairly dangerous guy
30:32And I was about to hurt
30:34Somebody out there
30:34And they need to get me
30:36Out of there
30:36They hog tied me
30:39Hands handcuffed
30:40Behind my back
30:41Flat on my stomach
30:42Feet shackled
30:44And tied to my hand
30:45And then two cops
30:47Takes guns
30:49And put them to my head
30:50On each side
30:50And threw me
30:52Out the back door
30:52Vince he had to be thinking
30:55What the f***
30:56I gotta calm these guys down
30:58That was the f***ing atmosphere
31:00They didn't relate well
31:01With outsiders
31:02At that point
31:03Vince had to get rid
31:04Of Schultz
31:05Because it was only
31:06Going to get worse
31:07When I got back
31:09To Connecticut
31:09I checked with Vince
31:11And he said
31:12I'm going to have to
31:12Check with Jay Strongbow
31:13Find out what happened
31:14He knew what happened
31:16And my lawyer
31:17Wrote him a letter
31:18Told him I was ready
31:18To go back to work
31:19And I said
31:20No
31:20Mr. Schultz
31:21Will not work for us
31:22No more
31:23Ever
31:23In 2019
31:25Hulk Hogan
31:27Came forward
31:27With a completely
31:28Different recollection
31:29Of the incident
31:30With Mr. T
31:31Out of nowhere
31:33I had T sitting
31:34In ringside
31:35Because he's a friend
31:35Of mine
31:36And I didn't know
31:36What was going on
31:37David rolled out of the ring
31:38And bitch slapped
31:39The hell out of him
31:40Just out of nowhere
31:41A shoot slap
31:42And after that
31:43He was pretty much done
31:45Vince
31:45Was so pissed at him
31:47That pretty much
31:47Was the bullet
31:48That did him in
31:49Most people know who that is
31:53Dr. D
31:53And I guess
31:55You know
31:55Hogan
31:56Bighead Hogan
31:58Boy he used to hate
31:59For me to tell him
32:00He had a big head
32:01And now he don't have
32:02No hair at all
32:04What is on the back?
32:05Okay
32:06Uh
32:06Old friend
32:08Forgot his name
32:09So
32:12I don't know
32:13If Stossel
32:14Had anything to do
32:14With my
32:15Getting fired
32:16They said it was
32:17Because of Mr. T
32:18Well that's
32:19A bunch of crap
32:20And then
32:20You know
32:21To beat all of that
32:22Is Hogan
32:23Went within a few weeks
32:24After that
32:25And dropped
32:25Belzer
32:26Mr. Hulk
32:28Hogan
32:28One of the
32:31Publicity appearances
32:32That they had arranged
32:33For Hulk Hogan
32:33And Mr. T
32:34To build up
32:35For Wrestlemania
32:36Was an appearance
32:36On the Richard Belzer show
32:38There's a thing
32:38That the boys used to do
32:40With a reporter
32:41Or a photographer
32:42Or somebody
32:43From the public
32:44Now the first thing
32:45You need to know
32:45About amateur wrestling
32:46Yes
32:46Or professional wrestling
32:47Or submission
32:48You just tell me brother
32:49When you want me
32:49To quit squealing
32:50Okay
32:50Alright
32:50Let me just put one hold
32:52On you
32:52And just show you
32:53What it feels like
32:54What we go through
32:55How about it T
32:56Keep like that
32:57For a little while
32:58Put him in a sleeper
33:00I mean choked him
33:02And he passed out
33:08Dropped him on the floor
33:09And he busted his head
33:10He's alright
33:12He's just sleeping
33:12He's sleeping
33:13Huh
33:14Hogan didn't get
33:15Nothing out of it
33:17We feel real bad
33:18About the incident
33:18That just happened
33:19When somebody asked me
33:20To show him
33:21A professional wrestling
33:21Hold especially
33:22When they sit here
33:22And laugh in my face
33:23When I'm talking to them
33:25I just showed him
33:25In the simplest hold
33:26That I knew
33:27And I thought
33:27There was a settlement
33:28I'm sure Vince
33:29Probably paid it
33:30At that point
33:31Number one
33:31Vince McMahon
33:32Wouldn't go fire
33:32Hulk Hogan
33:33Even feed a shot
33:34Richard Belzer
33:35In the head
33:35Hogan was the golden child
33:37It seemed like you and Terry
33:39Were close at one point
33:40Did this kind of come in
33:42Between your friendship
33:42With him at all
33:43Oh yeah
33:44Yeah
33:44We was close
33:45We were very close
33:46Probably one of the best
33:47Friends I ever had
33:48In the business
33:48Until he turned his back
33:50On me
33:50Hulk Hogan
33:52Then all of a sudden
33:53He's with Vince
33:55And it's like
33:55Hey
33:56I can't talk to you
33:57Can't deal with you
33:59You're on your own
33:59Don't
34:00You know
34:00And they talk to him since
34:02As Hogan becomes
34:04A household name
34:05Schultz's star
34:07Fades away
34:07He tries to find
34:09Steady work
34:10In the smaller territories
34:11But believes
34:12He's being blackballed
34:14By the industry
34:14They called me back
34:15And said
34:16Nobody wants to
34:16Sign a contract with you
34:17You're too mean
34:18You're too bad
34:19Everybody I called
34:20They didn't even want
34:21To talk to me
34:22The promoters
34:23Because of Vince
34:24You know
34:25He told them
34:25Hey
34:26You use him
34:26I'm through with you
34:27Don't call me for nothing
34:28Ever
34:29Yeah
34:31It was a hardship
34:32But I worked through it
34:34I kept working independent
34:36For a year or two
34:37And then I became
34:38The world's greatest bounty hunter
34:40Open the door
34:42Right now
34:43What happens when
34:44Wrestling's most notorious
34:45Bad guy
34:46Becomes a real life gun
34:48For hire
34:48Dr. D. David Shultz
34:50The world's greatest bounty hunter
34:51Is coming to a screen
34:52Near you
34:53Exiled from wrestling
35:01And desperate for cash
35:02David Shultz
35:03Is introduced
35:04To the dangerous world
35:05Of bounty hunting
35:06By a friend
35:07In law enforcement
35:08He told me
35:09I'll introduce you
35:10To the bondsmen
35:11And what you do
35:12Is you go pick them up
35:13You get the paperwork
35:14And you bring them in
35:15You get paid
35:1610% of the bond
35:17Oh okay
35:19That sounds good
35:19Yeah
35:20250,000
35:21Yeah that's a nice one
35:22And they had nobody
35:23Doing it at that time
35:24I went in
35:25They told me
35:25They had this
35:26One guy
35:27Motorcycle guy
35:28Bad guy
35:28Nobody wanted to go get him
35:30And they needed to get him in
35:31Well the next morning
35:32I brought him in
35:33Come around the corner
35:34I put a 9mm in his mouth
35:35And he wasn't bad at all
35:36He went right to the ground
35:37Handcuffed him
35:38Took him to jail
35:39And I said
35:40Wow
35:41It's pretty easy right here now
35:43When you're a pro wrestler
35:44As long as I was
35:46Every day you got your hands
35:48On a man
35:48Every day you got a man's arm
35:51You got a man's wrist
35:52You know
35:53What hurts
35:54What not
35:54How to hook him
35:56How to take him down
35:57Because you do it every day
35:59Oh yeah
36:00Get your hands on the car
36:00Okay
36:01Get them on the car
36:01It's not strange to you
36:03And it don't bother you
36:04To grab a guy
36:05And he don't know
36:06What's happening to him
36:07Have my brother call Tony
36:09Schultz takes to the job
36:11Like he was born to do it
36:12He soon develops a reputation
36:14As one of the most reliable
36:16Bounty hunters in America
36:18And the only way
36:19You're gonna get away from the doctor
36:21Is when you come out that house
36:22And you see me standing out there
36:23You better take off running
36:25My job takes me where the criminal goes
36:27Wherever he goes I go
36:28It may take me to Saudi Arabia
36:30Wherever he goes
36:31I'm gonna follow
36:32I'm gonna be right on him
36:33All the bondsmen started calling me
36:34I had more work than I could do
36:36If you found him you got paid
36:38If you didn't you didn't
36:39F*** people man
36:41They hide everywhere
36:42But you got all kind of them man
36:45You got all kind of them
36:46You got hookers
36:47You got drug dealers
36:49But everybody out on the streets
36:51Knew me as Dr. D
36:52You know when people know you
36:54It's a lot easier to get into their house
36:56Or they'll open the door for you
36:57Or whatever
36:58That's Dr. D
37:00David Schultz
37:01Buddy
37:01That's the one that beat the s***
37:03I heard Donald Rivera
37:04Hey I feel good going in with you
37:08New Haven
37:08New Haven
37:09New Haven
37:10New Haven
37:10New Haven
37:11New Haven
37:12New Haven
37:13New Haven
37:14We're coming to your home
37:15Your living room
37:16And it's gonna be
37:17True
37:18Live
37:18Actual
37:19Footage
37:20No more make believe
37:21It's all over
37:22I'll be there soon
37:24What would you say
37:26Is like the most memorable
37:27Experience you had
37:28As a bounty hunter
37:29Well the best one was
37:31When I picked up the two girls
37:33That was kidnapped
37:34By this piece of garbage
37:35And three years
37:37They couldn't find him
37:38The FBI
37:39The two girls got kidnapped
37:4014, 15 years old
37:42When he took off with them
37:43They said when he left the house
37:44He would chain them
37:46Around the commode
37:48And the only way
37:50They could drink water
37:51Was out of the commode
37:52While he was gone
37:53I mean this guy was sicko
37:55You know
37:55I found him in Puerto Rico
37:57And I walked in the bar
37:59And he was sitting at the bar
38:01And the two girls
38:02Was stripping on stage
38:04And they had a baby
38:05In the back room
38:06Two Dobermans
38:07Living back there with her
38:08And I said
38:09Hey Larry
38:10Dr. D. David Schultz
38:11Bell enforcement agent
38:13You're under arrest
38:14And he jumped off the bar
38:15And ran around the side
38:16I slid over the top of the bar
38:18And he was going out the back door
38:19And two Puerto Rican policemen
38:22Pulled down on the shotguns
38:23I jumped on him
38:26Handcuffed him
38:26Took him outside
38:27Throwed him in the car
38:28We ended up with two girls
38:31Two dogs
38:31A baby
38:32We had an old group man
38:34But I got them back home
38:37And I guess they're doing great today
38:39It's like kind of living
38:40In an actual mood
38:41Oh yeah
38:42All the time
38:43All the time
38:44You just got to be careful
38:45Because let me tell you
38:47One mistake is your last one
38:49While the former wrestler
38:51Is risking his life in the streets
38:53His old boss
38:54Vince McMahon
38:55Drops a major bombshell
38:57State legislatures
38:58Are being urged
38:59By the biggest of all
39:00Wrestling promoters
39:01To think the unthinkable
39:02To declare that pro wrestling
39:04Is not a sport at all
39:05But an entertainment
39:06Whose outcome
39:07Is actually known
39:08Before the battle begins
39:09In an ironic twist
39:11McMahon is attempting
39:12To lift the veil
39:13On the very thing
39:14Schultz became infamous
39:15For protecting
39:16Vince McMahon
39:18Went to
39:19Athletic Department
39:20Baltimore
39:20And told them
39:21Hey
39:22It's entertainment
39:24It's not a sport
39:26It's entertainment
39:27You know
39:27You just pose
39:28The whole business
39:29Four years after
39:37The inaugural Wrestlemania
39:39Vince McMahon's gamble
39:41Has more than paid off
39:42But to increase profits
39:44He aims to change
39:46The rules
39:46Around how wrestling
39:48Is regulated
39:48Those commissions
39:50Would license
39:51Promoters
39:52And wrestlers
39:53And take tax cut
39:54For the right
39:55To hold that event
39:56In their state
39:57It might be
39:58Five or six percent
39:59Of the gate
39:59Some states
40:00Maybe up to ten percent
40:02It is now official
40:03Wrestling
40:04Is not really wrestling
40:06Wrestling promoters
40:08Have told their secrets
40:09In an attempt
40:09To free themselves
40:10From the half
40:11Nelson
40:11Of government regulation
40:12We shouldn't be governed
40:13By a state body
40:14Unless you're gonna
40:15License Broadway
40:16That was the comparison
40:18It's a show
40:19When Vince McMahon
40:20Came out
40:21And said it was
40:22Entertainment
40:23He justified
40:24What I said
40:25You understand
40:26Kayfabe
40:28That's a bunch
40:28Of crap
40:29I mean
40:30What idiot
40:31Came up with that
40:33After McMahon
40:36Makes his appeal
40:37To the state senate
40:38New Jersey
40:39Finally frees
40:40The WWF
40:41From regulation
40:42For Vince McMahon
40:43It's all part
40:45Of the show
40:45I did watch it
40:46With my son
40:47Who was a very big fan
40:48And we bought
40:49All of figures
40:50And I understand
40:51What a difference
40:51It makes to people
40:52Many other states
40:54Eager for the WWF's business
40:56Follow New Jersey's lead
40:58And deregulate
41:00What McMahon
41:00Now calls
41:01Sports entertainment
41:02Stossel was set up
41:05And Eddie Mansfield
41:06Had everybody set up
41:08He went up there
41:10And sold his soul out
41:11I gave my whole career up
41:13Because of these people
41:15Do you
41:16Or will you ever
41:17Or would you ever
41:18Forgive John Stossel
41:19It's really not
41:20For me to forgive
41:21It's God's job
41:24To forgive him
41:25And I'm not God
41:27What are the things
41:31You're doing now
41:31What am I doing now
41:33Well starting next week
41:34I'll be driving
41:35A tractor trailer
41:3618 wheel
41:36Hauling cotton
41:37From the gin
41:38To the warehouses
41:39I'll do that
41:40About three months
41:41Four months
41:42I work from sunup
41:43To sundown
41:44And then during the night
41:45There's two ways
41:48That David Schultz's
41:49Career in wrestling
41:49Could have gone
41:50One he would have
41:52Made a ton of money
41:52In the WWF
41:53Because he would have
41:54Been a big star
41:55There for quite some time
41:56Or
41:56David being David
41:59As Vince McMahon
42:00Got more cartoony
42:02More showbiz
42:03David would have
42:04Found something else
42:05To blow up about
42:05And something would have
42:06Happened
42:07Which is probably
42:08More likely
42:09I want you
42:10Where are you at
42:11Boy
42:11Vince McMahon
42:12Also wanted to be
42:14The Walt Disney
42:14Of wrestling
42:15No way
42:16Are we going to
42:17Compete with those clowns
42:18He wanted to be
42:19More clean
42:20More family oriented
42:22A show that he
42:23Could take on the road
42:24So some went with him
42:25And trusted that vision
42:26And got their pictures
42:28On ice cream bars
42:29Boy it sure is good
42:30You ought to try one
42:31I have about two
42:32Every day
42:32Problem was
42:34With Schultz
42:34He had a guy
42:35That was tougher
42:36Than a Waffle House steak
42:37And didn't like
42:38To be pushed around
42:39Is David Schultz
42:41The type of person
42:41That you could control
42:42I think if you
42:44Treated David
42:44As a human being
42:46And respected him
42:47As a professional athlete
42:48You can control anybody
42:51I don't think
42:52That's the problem
42:53With David
42:53I think it's
42:55It's being disrespected
42:56And I think
42:58That was all
42:59Of our problems
43:00It's still annoying
43:03That I've done
43:04A million pieces
43:05That people
43:06Still come up
43:07And say
43:07Aren't you the guy
43:08Who got whacked
43:09By the wrestler
43:09On YouTube
43:10It's probably
43:11My second
43:12Most watched video
43:13I've become immortal
43:15People gonna talk
43:16About me
43:17When I'm dead and gone
43:18Oh yeah
43:19We remember that guy
43:20He slept the hell
43:21Out of that reporter
43:22Dr. D. David Schultz
43:23And I've offered
43:24To go face to face
43:26With him
43:26Let's straighten this thing out
43:28John Toss
43:28And don't worry
43:30John Toss
43:31I'm not gonna hurt you boy
43:32If there's something
43:34You could say
43:35To David Schultz
43:36Now
43:36What would you say
43:37To him
43:37F*** you David
43:39I understand
43:41I stood up
43:42For wrestling
43:43And it don't really
43:45Bother me
43:45What people think
43:46About me
43:46I really don't care
43:48You know
43:49They can think
43:50Anything they want
43:51I don't care
43:52And I'll tell them
43:53I don't care
43:54I don't care
43:56Mmm
43:58I don't care
44:17I don't know
