00:00Isn't it weird that whether you are doomscrolling in Delhi, Düsseldorf, or anywhere else,
00:05your clicks make money for platforms in the U.S., and the profits and taxes also end up in the U.S.?
00:12These companies record sales almost everywhere, and they are mostly taxed where they are headquartered.
00:18Now, the countries where platforms operate want a share by implementing a Digital Services Tax, or DST,
00:25a 2-3% charge on revenue once these tech companies earn a certain amount.
00:31Take Canada, which drafted a 3% levy on revenues above 20 million Canadian dollars in Canadian sales.
00:38That's a bit over 14.5 million USD.
00:41They forecasted more than 5 billion USD in revenue over 5 years.
00:46But even though they did not name specific companies,
00:49President Donald Trump called the DST a direct and blatant attack and threatened more tariffs.
00:56Because, let's be real, who are the big digital companies?
00:59Following Trump's outburst, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's government shelved the plan,
01:05hoping to lure the U.S. President back to the negotiating table over broader tariffs.
01:10However, Canada is not the only one pursuing such attacks.
01:13For years, Italy, Spain, the U.K., and other countries have been taxing digital service providers
01:19when operating within their borders.
01:22In 2023, France made 680 million euros from its DST,
01:26and it is now looking to increase the rate to 5%.
01:30Even Germany is thinking about a 10% DST.
01:34But as another tariff deadline looms,
01:36will Trump put the pressure on these countries as well to drop their DSTs?
01:43The U.S. President of the United States is a very important part of the U.S. President of the United States.
