Jim Charles retires.
Transcript
00:00Hi, we're here at Jim's Gym in life and here I am with the legendary Jim Charles. Good afternoon. I think you've got some big news.
00:11Well, it may be a big news to a lot of people but it's a time that I'm doing my final show and so I'm afraid it's half an hour to never.
00:25And that's this weekend isn't it, this Sunday, Briarley North Civic Hall? Absolutely right.
00:30And how many bodybuilders are going to be going through the doors of Briarley?
00:34Well, in part of me there's about 70 odd of them I mean but there's people ringing in today and there's always people who leave until the very last minute.
00:44You know, they wake up and think, well I'm not right or have I gained a bit too much or whatever and they turn and say, I'm sorry I'm late.
00:54But it's going to be a big show when you guys hope to go over the bank?
00:57I think it's going to go over the bank as you say.
00:59And over the years, Jim, you've met all the big names in bodybuilding. Tell us about the biggest and the best.
01:06Well, I suppose in the end I've got to admit it's all, haven't I, you know, because he's been the most publicized and successful, you know.
01:16But I mean Sean Connery was not too bad. And I met Clint Walker who played Cheyenne and quite a few others.
01:28You know, the guy that married Janna Mansfield and so on, you know. There's quite a lot of it.
01:35And then bodybuilding-wise, you know, at Briarley Hill which has become a maker of bodybuilding.
01:41I mean we've had two bodybuilders who've won five times in Mr. Universe, which is fantastic.
01:50And then we've had, God knows, I haven't even missed the universes at Briarley Hill.
01:55And we've probably been at Briarley Hill for about 45 years. So it's become a sort of maker of anything, you know.
02:04Well, in my opinion, when you think of the amount of famous bodybuilders who aren't there.
02:09But that's largely down to you, isn't it? Down to you and your not-
02:13Well, you could blame me, you know, yeah. I mean, I paid the airfare to some of them to come back.
02:19Vince Taylor came and went on to the Olympia, I don't know how many times.
02:25Ernie Taylor, who was a local guy who did exactly well.
02:32Benville Miller, who I had to tell off when he won the Britain.
02:39And so on, you know. There's so many of them. Quite a lot from America, Italy, Spain, and that.
02:50And the 19 years old, I did a big one of them.
02:55But unfortunately, I got involved in too many things.
03:00And I got involved in music.
03:02The first guy ever to play the music of the Universe.
03:07And I played it for nothing to convince him it would be a good idea.
03:12And then I finished up going all over the world. Playing in Paris de Congress in France.
03:19And then Spain, Italy, Germany 25 times.
03:25The Gruger Hall, which is very famous.
03:29You know. So in other words, I don't know where I am.
03:32And Sergio Le Bray was one of the greatest bodybuilders.
03:35A fantastic guy.
03:37Came to celebrate my 45 years.
03:41And he said, you have a gym?
03:44I thought you were the music.
03:47Wow. Well, there will always be gym from gym's gym to people in this part of the black country.
03:53And long may the gym continue if the show is on.
03:56Okay. Thank you very much. I appreciate that.
03:59Thank you very much.
