China’s recent WWII parade featured counter-drone technology, which GLOBSEC nonresident fellow Bryce Barros says reflects Taiwan’s growing focus on drone capabilities. The event also included references to wartime history that downplayed the role of the Republic of China and the Kuomintang (Nationalists).

00:00I also thought what was really interesting too, the emphasis on the counter drones that did feel
00:08like a direct way of countering all the messaging that Taiwan's M&D and the Taiwan government has
00:14put out about its own sort of drone capabilities. And from a military political perspective,
00:21something I thought was really interesting in terms of messaging for the parade was the
00:25emphasis the parade put on trying to sort of like sideline the history of the Republic of China
00:31and the KMT to the extent in war. To see China sort of tap into that for this parade
00:37is a way of sort of sidelighting that legacy of the government that currently exists in Taiwan.
00:43And it's a really interesting aspect that I don't think we've seen before.
