00:07Here in Tiananmen Square, China kicked off its largest ever military parade

00:12to mark 80 years since the defeat of Japan in the Second World War.

00:16Speaking to a crowd of more than 50,000 spectators, including Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un,

00:22the Chinese president warned that humanity was facing a decision between peace or war.

00:27Today, humanity again has to choose between peace and war, dialogue and confrontation.

00:38We will remain committed to the path of peaceful development

00:42and join hands with all peoples around the world in building a community with a shared future for humanity.

00:51Pariahs in the West, due to the conflict in Ukraine,

00:54Putin and Kim were among 26 heads of state who attended.

00:58The event was overwhelmingly shunned by Western leaders, with the exception of officials from Serbia and Slovakia.

01:05It comes as U.S. President Donald Trump's trade tariffs strained the U.S.'s relations with allies and rivals alike,

01:12with Beijing seeking to position itself as a possible counterweight.

01:16A prospect that did not appear to face Trump when he spoke to reporters on Tuesday.

01:21China's having a massive military parade that President Putin and Kim Jong-un will be attending.

01:26Do you interpret that as a challenge to this?

01:28And are you concerned at all about those countries?

01:30No.

01:31Not at all.

01:32China needs us, and I have a very good relationship with President Xi, you know.

01:38But China needs us much more than we need them.

01:41No, I don't see that at all, no.

01:44Trump later accused China, Russia and North Korea of conspiring against the U.S. as the parade got underway.

01:51Ahead of the parade, Putin clinched deeper energy deals with China.

01:55For Kim meanwhile, the gathering offers a chance to gain implicit backing for his banned nuclear weapons.
