00:00I would have never got it right though, unless I cheated.
00:02This is so easy.
00:03This is so easy.
00:04I could not cheat.
00:05I wanted you to be in Blue Valentine and you said...
00:07I said no.
00:08No.
00:09What you want me to say, chef?
00:16We all like going back in time and imagining how things could have gone differently.
00:22When and where did you first meet?
00:26Okay, I know this answer.
00:30I have the right answer.
00:36No, I have the right answer.
00:41I'm right.
00:43This one's right.
00:44No way.
00:45Uh-huh.
00:46We met in 2006 at a party for a guide to recognizing your saints.
00:51Damn.
00:52And you had just read the script for Blue Valentine and I wanted you to be in Blue Valentine and you said...
00:58I said no.
00:59No.
01:00I wasn't ready to do that movie.
01:02He said no.
01:03And then the second time we met was in a park.
01:05Yes.
01:06And in that park, I said, do you remember we met like 17 years ago?
01:10And you said, I think about that all the time.
01:12And I said next time...
01:13No, I think about reading the script all the time and saying no, especially after I saw the movie.
01:17But I still think Ryan did it better, personally.
01:19I didn't remember saying that to you.
01:20He did a very good job.
01:21He did an exceptional job.
01:22He did a very good job.
01:23I didn't know why I said no, because I'd never been in a relationship like that.
01:27So I was like, man, I don't know how to do that.
01:30I actually totally forgot about that.
01:31You did.
01:32I think I was panicking because I didn't know the name of the park.
01:34What was the name of the park?
01:35Prospect Park.
01:36It was Prospect.
01:37I'm winning this game.
01:38I hate losing.
01:39Did Derek have any reference films for Roofman?
01:42What were they?
02:03It's almost like a word for word kind of like, like copy of the movie.
02:07You took it shot for shot.
02:14I almost did tootsie.
02:15Really?
02:16Yeah.
02:17That was one?
02:18Yeah.
02:19We talked about that one.
02:20Well, it's a guy who wants to be, who can't be close to his kids, so has to go into disguise
02:25to be a part of a family.
02:27Tonally, I think there's some similarities because the great thing about Mrs. Doubtfire
02:31is that there's actual real stakes in that movie.
02:35Yeah, there's a real sadness to it.
02:37Like there's like real scary.
02:39Like it's scary all that time because you're just like, oh, this is going to go bad.
02:43Care Bears is like scary.
02:44It's sad.
02:45I've never seen it.
02:46You released it.
02:47Oh, yeah.
02:48I actually love that movie.
02:49It's good?
02:50Yeah, fully.
02:51It's animated?
02:52Yeah.
02:53What kind of accent does Gambit have?
02:56What you got?
02:57Marbles in.
02:58Yeah.
02:59No, no, not Creole.
03:00No?
03:01Not Creole.
03:02What is it?
03:03It's got a little Creole in it, but it's Cajun.
03:04Oh, Cajun.
03:05Cajun.
03:06Okay.
03:07They are good.
03:08But I just said marbles in his mouth and drunk.
03:10The name is Remy Labo.
03:11The Diablet Blanc.
03:12But you can call me the Gambit.
03:13What you want me to say, chef?
03:14It gets tougher the faster the conversation goes.
03:16And like, there are strange words that are very easy to drop into because you kind of,
03:37everything goes up.
03:38It'd be like, what you want to go eat?
03:40I'm like, it's very French in that way, but it's not French.
03:44It's strange that they have their own thing.
03:49Who knows more about the story of Jeffrey Manchester?
04:01Ready?
04:04Look, Derek knows every single thing, everything about each character.
04:09We had maybe 10 of the real actual people that were attached to Jeff's like real story.
04:16The actual person that was driving the truck that he escaped in.
04:20I bet you know, I bet you know things about him that like his family probably doesn't know.
04:27His ability to research and to chase the ghosts as he says is extraordinary.
04:33Well, I did spend about four and a half years talking to Jeff and everyone who would talk to me in his life.
04:39Yeah.
04:40500 hours or something of conversations.
04:42And I still talk to Jeff.
04:43He calls me all the time.
04:44But you lived his life.
04:47And as a filmmaker, I'm nothing without you.
04:50Well, same.
04:51Because all I have is like ideas or all I have is like research.
04:54But you had to live the role so that's why it's a tie.
04:56I do believe that this is our Jeff in the movie is a strange baby.
05:00Yeah.
05:01Between me, you and Jeff.
05:03Like actual Jeff.
05:05Oh, are you law enforcement?
05:06Yes.
05:07I am.
05:08Wow.
05:09That's amazing.
05:10I never got to meet Jeff.
05:12Unfortunately, they just couldn't work out.
05:15They didn't give me approval to go in and meet him before we got filming.
05:18So I had to go a lot on just my phone calls with him.
05:21I did talk to Jeff a couple weeks ago and he said, he was like, I got it because he saw the trailer and on the news.
05:28And he says, I saw a picture of Channing in his underwear with like a pool floaty and a teddy bear on his shoulders.
05:37Jeff, if you ever see this, that's all Derek.
05:39That wasn't me.
05:41And I said, I said, I said, well, I was like, I was just hanging out in the toy store.
05:46We were getting ready to shoot and Channing came around the corner looking like that.
05:49And he said, you know, I'm really happy to hear that.
05:52I'm really happy Channing got to get in touch with his inner child.
05:55He said, because that's what happens to you when you live in a toy store for six months.
06:00How long did Jeffrey evade capture after he escaped?
06:09I'm going to get this wrong.
06:11Father's Day to January 4th.
06:22So June, June, June to January 4th.
06:24So yeah, that's six months, six months.
06:26All right.
06:27In our movie, it was not six months.
06:29No, it was.
06:30No way.
06:31It was, well, it's Father's Day to Christmas.
06:33Sorry.
06:34We just gave away the ending.
06:35Cut that part.
06:38It is a Christmas movie.
06:40Who would be better at hiding out at a Toys R Us?
06:51We both got this one.
06:53Yeah.
06:54Why is that?
06:55I'm pretty good at hide and seek in general in life.
06:58Manhunt.
06:59You can't catch me in the woods, boy.
07:01In a Toys R Us, I think I get pretty creative.
07:05Yeah.
07:06You were very comfy in there.
07:07I would just crawl inside one of the giant stuffed animals and just go to sleep.
07:12It's been six months and still no leaves on the whereabouts of the escaped convict known
07:17as the roof man.
07:18What is Derek's favorite note to give on set?
07:21Again, put more Buster Keaton.
07:40Exactly.
07:41If you put them together, we got there.
07:43Yeah.
07:44More Buster Keaton.
07:45More Buster Keaton.
07:46There we go.
07:47That's good.
07:48Either that, more Buster Keaton or more Jerry Lewis.
07:51Yeah.
07:52That's the right answer.
07:53Actually, I didn't see that much of that stuff in the movie.
07:58I would love-
07:59There's a lot of physical-
08:00There's a lot of physical stuff.
08:01I mean, there's-
08:02But we had to hit the ceiling, I guess.
08:04Yeah.
08:05You love a silent take as well.
08:06Definitely silent take.
08:07We took two walks, two long walks.
08:10Our first walk was about, I don't know, it was like four and a half hours or something
08:15like that, and we just walked and walked and walked.
08:18Our second one was probably six hours or something like that.
08:22And we talked about everything.
08:25You know, literally like everything that you could imagine.
08:29Around the movie, personally, we would go off on like tangents that had nothing to do with the movie.
08:34And that was very much what the movie was like.
08:36It was exploring everything that you possibly can dig in every single direction.
08:44I didn't really know what to expect about-
08:46Because I've seen his other movies and I talked to Bradley Cooper about like your style.
08:50He kind of prepped me a little bit for like the long takes and like really unorthodox things.
08:56He told me about the silent take.
08:57And so I had at least a little bit of knowledge.
09:00But again, like when you think it's done, you're halfway there.
09:04Like you're when you're like, we've done everything.
09:07I think we've done everything.
09:08I don't have any more ideas.
09:10We've only gotten halfway there.
09:12And because you were just a relentless digger.
09:15If you're making a film, there's no greater ally than than Channing for a filmmaker.
09:21When you're making a movie, you need someone to believe in your delusion as much as you do.
09:29And Channing was just always there.
09:31Always game.
09:32Because there's a great unknowing to making a movie.
09:35You have to find the discovery.
09:36And I think you were game.
09:37You were always game.
09:38Always game.
09:39The one thing I knew that we always agreed upon was that you don't even know when you have it.
09:43Of course.
09:44Like we could have got it on the first take.
09:47And-
09:48Sometimes we moved on.
09:49Sometimes we did.
09:50But I would say it was more for time's sake.
09:52It was like, yeah, we got an hour and a half to shoot this.
09:58To shoot all the angles.
10:01You like a lot of angles.
10:02Do I really?
10:03It's pretty simple.
10:04I've worked with a couple of directors that don't give any direction at all.
10:13And this was such a refreshing sort of just like, oh man, we just get to like explore this person.
10:19And it's all about telling like the story that is the essence of Jeff.
10:23And I think I would do this all over again a thousand times for you.
10:27Me too.
10:28How did Channing prepare to play Jeffrey?
10:31Yeah.
10:32Yeah.
10:33Yeah.
10:34Jeff is a really thin guy.
10:35Like he's not as big, I would say boned as me.
10:49I don't, I think he's tall, but he's just really wiry.
10:52He was so wiry and like, and really fit.
10:55And I had just done a role earlier that year that I got up to like 240.
11:00And, and then I had only planned to get down to like 185.
11:05And then it just, once I was already going, it's just the days of shooting.
11:10Just, it kept coming off and I got down to like 172.
11:13Our assistant director, Mariella, she was concerned.
11:15Yeah.
11:16She was just like, that's it.
11:17That's enough weight.
11:18She's like, get a mistake right now.
11:19Like, and I was like, I think you're right.
11:21I'm like, this is weird.
11:23And I don't know why it was a sort of an emptiness and like a sadness to it.
11:30I just see myself and I would just seem hollow.
11:33And the movie a lot for me was a lot of like loneliness and.
11:37Yearning.
11:38Yeah.
11:39Like a real meditation for that and wanting to be full and trying to like fill an empty vessel.
11:45That empty feeling sucks after a little while.
11:48I remember when we saw each other in the park on the six hour walk.
11:51Yeah.
11:52And you said, I was thinking about losing weight.
11:53What do you think?
11:54And, and your reasoning at that point was that Jeff was the roof man.
11:58Yeah.
11:59And he had to get into tight spaces.
12:00Yeah.
12:01And he has to live inside the walls of a Toys R Us.
12:04Yeah.
12:05It's harder to do that when you're bigger.
12:06So you, I was like, whatever you want to do.
12:08Which famous actor have you both worked with?
12:11Hmm.
12:12Let's see here.
12:13Oh yeah.
12:14Uh, yeah.
12:15Uh huh.
12:16You know this answer, man.
12:19Oh fuck.
12:20I would've never got it right though.
12:22This is so easy.
12:23This is so easy.
12:24I couldn't not cheat.
12:25This is so easy.
12:26I know.
12:27I panic when I think, when I have to think of names.
12:30Uh.
12:31Damn it.
12:32I cheated though.
12:33I did.
12:34I could not cheat.
12:35I was gonna-
12:36He was a big topic of our conversation on our watch.
12:38Yeah.
12:39He was our, he was our first thing we talked about.
12:41There's nothing not to love about that man.
12:43That's true.
12:44If I tried, I could not find one single thing that I would, I would want different or say
12:50that I would be like, man, that's a little concerning.
12:53Like he's just one of the best humans that I've ever met in my life.
12:57He's also one of the best actors that I've ever gotten to act with.
13:01He helped me so much in a way that I don't think I've worked with anybody that has like,
13:06was so giving in so many ways.
13:08And even giving me little hints on little breadcrumbs to follow on, even on my own character.
13:13Cause I like, I don't have an ego.
13:15I love any idea that I can get from anybody.
13:18It doesn't mean I have to take it.
13:19It just, I don't mind it.
13:20I didn't get classically trained in this.
13:22And I think there's so many people, especially like Ruff, that has a really sensitive soul
13:29that he could have never taken an acting class in his life and still probably give you the
13:34same advice on a way.
13:36He's just like, so just beautifully smart and sensitive.
13:40And I think that's rare.
13:41Heart and mind.
13:42Mark Ruffalo.
13:43Really, truly.
13:44Spirit.
13:45Soul.
13:46Spirit.
13:47Body.
13:48So beautiful.
13:49Luscious hair.
13:50God, his hair.
13:51He does have very good hair.
13:52He does have very good hair.
13:53Which of Channing's films is based on his real life work experience before he started
13:58acting?
13:59White House Pound.
14:00Yeah, there you go.
14:02She's the man.
14:05Foxcatcher.
14:06Yeah.
14:07I wish.
14:08Wait, wait.
14:09Wait, I should have, I should have wrote something funny.
14:10Should have wrote something funny, but I'm not.
14:11I had an idea.
14:12Yeah.
14:13Correct.
14:14Yeah.
14:15Yeah.
14:16Yeah.
14:17Yeah.
14:18Yeah.
14:19Yeah.
14:20That's actually totally true.
14:25That's more.
14:26Really?
14:27That one's more accurate to what really happened.
14:30Yeah.
14:31The first movie I saw of Channing's was Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.
14:34Obviously, I thought he was incredible in it.
14:36I offered him Blue Valentine after seeing that movie.
14:38He said no.
14:39He wasn't bitter about it.
14:40He's never going to let it go.
14:41I wasn't bitter about it.
14:42I loved him.
14:43Still loved him.
14:44I watched every movie he's ever made.
14:46I'm always.
14:47He was always been my favorite part of every movie he's been in.
14:50Yeah.
14:51I'm just.
14:53I feel like a lucky person.
14:56Love you though.
14:57Yeah.
14:58Love you too.
14:59Love you too.
15:00And you guys are enjoying your reception.
15:01Take care afterwards.
15:02Bye.
15:03Bye.
15:04Bye.
15:05Bye.
15:06Bye.
15:07Bye.
15:08Bye.
15:10Bye.
15:11Bye.
15:13Bye.
15:14Bye.
15:15Bye.
15:16Bye.
15:17Bye.
15:18Bye.
15:19Bye.
15:21Bye.
15:22Bye.
15:24Bye.
15:25Bye.
15:26Bye.
15:27Bye.
