Canadian unions mark Labor Day in Toronto with parade
Canadian union workers gathered in Toronto on Monday, September 1, to march in a Labor Day parade and call attention to the plight of unions after recent US tariffs levied on Canada.
Hundreds gathered with their local unions to carry signs supporting unions and union workers.
Last week, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will remove many retaliatory import tariffs on US goods and intensify talks with the United States on striking a new trade and security relationship. Canada has been holding talks with the United States on a new economic and security relationship for months but the two sides are not close to a deal.

00:30It's affecting our industry in a big way because, you know, we trade with the states
00:43with steel, aluminum, so that's, you know, cutting down on, you know, like how much steel
00:48we could bring in, and it's slowing down the industry, especially in high rise, you know,
00:52because we use steel in almost everything, right, so it's really affecting us, and we,
00:56you know, we're hoping that, you know, things change in the coming years, right, but it
01:00is affecting us, yes, 100%.
01:02If I had to say a message to our Canadian government, it would be that you need to stand up and you
01:08need to support unionized training.
01:11It's very important for younger members to get into the union.
01:17At my age, when I was starting to get into it, they were pushing computer skills, go
01:21to school, forget about the trades.
01:24Now there's a big shortage of labor union and manpower in our, in Canada, and it's very
01:30important for our government to support the local unions and training to get those people
01:34back into unions and the construction workforce.
01:41the training team in other groups.
01:49It's very important.
01:51It's very important to help someone who's trying to take the business many years' time.
01:55So, you know, a lot of people from our board, as well as our donors can't be in this
01:56country.
01:57And they're able to do it with the government of the country.
02:00And they're able to do it with the company, and they're able to do it with the company
02:02that can't be辞めて their jobs or not to be able to run.
02:05They're able to be in the job, and they're able to take them to them.
02:08This is how it matters, right?
02:22Yeah, all the tariffs that Trump is implementing on Canada, it does affect our industry to some degree, you know, with the higher taxes and stuff like that on materials, aluminum, steel, all that has an effect on the economy, on our union as well.
02:52So, yeah, it's important that we stick together in the union and support one another.
