00:00The FCAS programme faces fresh uncertainty following a dispute between its manufacturers.
00:07Launched in 2017 by France, Germany and Spain, this project aims to strengthen European defence
00:14by developing a 6th generation fighter aircraft supported by interconnected drones within a combat cloud.
00:19The German Defence Ministry accused French industry of blocking the project after Dassault's CEO
00:26called for single management of the fighter jet programme. However, it is unlikely that Dassault will get full control of the programme.
00:34There are other parts of this SCAF project, for example a combat cloud,
00:41an digital infrastructure to exchange information, to connect to other devices,
00:47and to non piloted drones, which should also be developed by Airbus and the German side.
00:59Following the management dispute, some German voices are threatening to leave the project.
01:04Germany could turn to a rival project for a 6th generation fighter jet developed by Italy, the UK and Japan.
01:10Other transatlantic-minded German voices are arguing in favour of buying more American F-35s,
01:16to the detriment of Europe's strategic autonomy.
01:19It will have a cost for the franco-allemande bilateral relations, but also for the European sovereignty,
01:26in a general way, since the SCAF project and its Jumeau project, the MGCS,
01:31the Chars of the Future, were in some sense the two main projects of this idea,
01:40of this vision of a more sovereign Europe.
01:42The FCAS was discussed on Friday at the Franco-German Council of Ministers in Toulon.
01:47The German Chancellor and the French President reaffirmed their commitment to the project,
01:51but hinted at the possibility of adjustments.
