00:02France's foreign minister has insisted that a new US-led coalition to open the
00:06Strait of Hormuz will complement and not compete with a mission headed by the UK
00:10and France. Jean-Noël Barreau's statement came after the US State
00:15Department announced an initiative that will ensure a safe passage through the
00:19waterway.
00:19Jean-Noël Barreau's statement has received very recently information on the initiative
00:25which has been taken by the United States. It is not an initiative of the same nature as
00:33the initiative of the President of the Republic, which has already gathered over 50 countries
00:39which have already announced that they will certainly contribute to it. It is a form of
00:46complementarity.
00:47The Strait carries around a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas. However,
00:53it has been effectively blocked by Iran since the start of the war in late February, which
00:58significantly drove up global oil and gas prices. Washington's own blockade of Iranian
01:04ports further disrupted traffic through the Strait.
