00:00Okay, thanks for joining us today. Sam Morton from Sussex World. It's transfer deadline day
00:07and a few deals for Brighton to wrap up in the final hours of the summer transfer window, Sam.
00:14Let's start with Matt O'Reilly. What are your thoughts on that? It's looking as though he's
00:20about to complete his move to Marseille. He's been pictured wearing the Marseille scarf,
00:25started the first two games of the Premier League for Brighton. Is that a surprise one for you, Sam?
00:31Yes, it did come as a surprise when I saw that pop up this morning, confirmed obviously by
00:36Fabrizio Romano, who got the deal and seemingly all confirmed, it seems like. It did take me by
00:46surprise a little bit because I know that he has been linked quite a lot this summer with moves away.
00:51I know there was talk of him going to Italy. Juventus were closed at one point and that deal
00:56collapsed. And obviously since signing for Brighton, he's obviously struggled for the first
01:02team minutes, obviously last season in particular after that injury and he couldn't really establish
01:07himself as a first team player. But he was one of the main players in pre-season and he did look
01:13really impressive in those games. Then he started the opening two games, obviously scoring in that
01:17draw against Fulham and then played the full 90 minutes at Everton.
01:22He's the fittest he's ever looked, hasn't he?
01:24Absolutely, yeah.
01:25You know, he struggled when he first came to Brighton, but he looks like really good at the
01:30moment.
01:31Yeah, yeah, 100%. And it seems like Herzl was starting to get the best out of him or at least
01:36what he wants to see from him in the system. But then he obviously was missing over the weekend
01:42against Man City. The irony being that he was the one to score the winner in the same fixture last
01:47season.
01:48Yeah, yeah, I remember that.
01:50And it was Brian Gruden this time that stepped up and did what Martin Reilly did last season.
01:55Yeah, yeah.
01:55I didn't really read too much into him not being there. I thought maybe he was having a bit of a
01:59rest after playing the first two games and still getting his fitness up to 100%. And the next thing
02:05you know, he's going to Marseille. And he's looking up with obviously former Abbey and boss
02:09Roberto de Serbi. So yeah, he did come out of the blue a little bit as well.
02:13Yeah, he did. I was in the media room yesterday after the Manchester City game. And he was on
02:19the bench and he came walking through the media room afterwards. And, you know, he just sort
02:25of thought, why, A, why he didn't play after he started the first two? And I just wondered
02:31what was happening with that yesterday. But it still surprised me as well.
02:38Yeah, a strange one, isn't it? It seems like it's a loan with no option to buy. So perhaps
02:43they're just looking for him to go out for a season and, yeah, obviously get some first
02:49team minutes on a regular basis.
02:50Yeah, perhaps Hurtstead wasn't planning to keep that going. Maybe he wasn't fully impressed
02:59by his performances in the opening two games. He maybe didn't see enough to warrant him
03:03starting games regularly this season. And obviously, I guess their first win… Sorry,
03:08Eric.
03:09Yeah, I was just going to say that you mentioned Brian Gruden. I think that's his progress in
03:14the last few games probably cleared, opened the door for O'Reilly's departure.
03:19Yeah. Yeah, it does seem that way. Obviously, he's got a goal against Oxford and then he
03:24obviously scored a brilliant winner against Matt City. So, yeah, perhaps Hurtstead is kind
03:29of looking at Gruden as the main player for that position and couldn't guarantee O'Reilly
03:33minutes this season.
03:34Yeah, yeah. They've got Gruden, Jorginho in that position and Jack Hinchwood even can play,
03:39you know, play in that number 10 role. So, yeah, a surprising one. But yeah, good luck to
03:44Matt O'Reilly. And then the next one, Sam, another controversial one, Igor to Palace, my
03:50word. So, Igor, he's been linked with so many clubs this summer. Real Sociedad were very close,
04:00but that deal's sort of cool. He's been linked with, seriously linked with Leeds,
04:06Everton, Wolves. West Ham were then very close to him on deadline day, earlier in the deadline day,
04:13but it appears that Crystal Palace, who need to bolster their defence, will compete
04:17in Europe again, you know, for the first time in ages next this season. But Palace, really.
04:26Yeah, it's a surprise one, isn't it? I think for such arch rivals, you don't often see things
04:31like this. You don't see players moving to other rivals, especially on loan deals. It's a real,
04:38a real strange one. You do kind of question why Brighton wants to strengthen a direct rival.
04:42Yeah, that's been the, yeah. And they could be up against each other to finish in the European
04:48spots. You never know. Palace have had a great start to the season and got a great win against
04:51Aston Villa. And I know they've lost Eze in this talk of Mark Gahey going to Liverpool on deadline
04:57day, and that's not yet confirmed or a guarantee or anything like that. But you wonder, with Igor
05:02going there, if that's a potential replacement for Gahey. I'm not too sure. But yeah, I'm definitely
05:07surprised. I'm not surprised that Igor's left. I think the signing's brighter than made. I think he
05:12definitely was surpassed to requirements. Unfortunately, it didn't really work out for
05:17him at Brighton. But yeah, no surprise to see him stay in the Premier League, let alone go to Crystal
05:22Palace. Yeah, loan with an obligation to buy, apparently. But yeah, we'll watch that one with
05:29interest. We're waiting for confirmation of that. But it looks as though it's all going to go through.
05:34So he joined Brighton, 15 million from Fiorentina a couple of years ago. And he's made 50 appearances,
05:41never really been a regular, but they've got the likes of Lewis Dunk, Jan-Paul Van Hecker,
05:46Adam Webster, when he's fit, Oliver Boscagli, and Diego Coppola all competed for those centre
05:52back spots. So probably a move that makes sense. But it'd be just to anybody but Palace, really,
05:58I think, for Brighton fans. But anyway, that could be done. Tarek Lamptey, Sam, he's been confirmed
06:05going to Fiorentina, reportedly for about five million. What do you think about that one?
06:13Yeah, it's a shame to see him go, but I think it's the right time for Tarek. He's been at the club for
06:18five years, has been a real exciting player to watch, one of the real standout players in the first couple
06:26of years of his time at Brighton when he came from Chelsea, and he really made a huge impact.
06:32And it was his pace that just took everyone by surprise. It was blistering pace down that right
06:39flank and he caused all sorts of problems. And unfortunately, he's just been hit by injury
06:43after injury. And he's just not been able to replicate that early form that he showed in the
06:48Brighton shirt. And there's been some glimpses. I know he did heavily feature in the Europa League
06:53campaign, and he did well. I think I remember him doing quite well against Marseille in one
06:58of the games. He did, didn't he? Yeah, he played on the left. He turned the game.
07:01Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely. I think it was in that two-wheel draw. But yeah, it just hasn't
07:05worked out in the last couple of years for him, unfortunately. Not Viné's keeping fit,
07:09and it, I think, was the right time to let him go. Yeah, look, if he just said for a few years
07:14ago that you're going to lose Tarek Lamptey for about five million, you'd think that's not
07:18great in terms of his ability. But I think to recoup some of the transfer fee for him and
07:26him go and enjoy his football in the Serie A, I think we're good for all parties, I think,
07:30and I wish him really well. Yeah, yeah. It's been five years with Brighton. I think they paid about
07:36around about three million for him when he first paid. Yeah, to the profit in the end of the day.
07:41To the profit, yeah. But for the first year or so, you thought, oh,
07:45you know, he could be a potential, you know, you're thinking, oh, maybe a huge fee for him.
07:50Yeah. But yeah, the injuries have just
07:53haven't helped him at all. Then, well, have we got any other business for today? So,
07:57I think the likes of Facundo Buonote, he's about to seal his move to Chelsea. Julio Nciso,
08:05again, looking as though he's going to go to Strasbourg after this to-and-throw with his medical.
08:09Yeah. And Jeremy Sarmiento, he's off to the Serie A, you think, Sam? You were looking at some bits
08:15on him this morning. Yeah. And it seems the most likely is Criminese, who Jamie Vardy has actually
08:21signed for. So, it could be two key signings for them and for him to go and play his football in
08:27the Serie A. And he's clearly got bucket loads of talent, Sam? And so, obviously, it hasn't worked
08:34out for him just to do with the level of competition for places. Yeah, he's got Matoma on that left
08:39flank, hasn't he? He struggled to get ahead of him. Yeah. 100%. Yeah. So, it's a shame to see him,
08:45guys. It's a shame it didn't quite work out for him. And Brighton show, as I say, there's definitely
08:48a real, real quality player there. There were plenty, plenty of interest in him, but he's
08:53seemingly opted to stay in Europe and it seems like a move to the Serie A. He's likely at the moment.
08:58Yeah. Yeah. And won an Otte to Chelsea. Few people would have seen that one come in,
09:03I think. It was a weird one with him because he was booked on a flight to Leeds last Friday.
09:11Leeds were expecting him to arrive and undergo his medical at Leeds. And the flight was cancelled. He
09:18never arrived. And then it's like, I had a call from a reporter up in Leeds saying, you know,
09:25what the hell's, what's going on here? He's supposed to be in Leeds. And then it emerged,
09:30West Ham were keen, but it emerged then that Chelsea wanted him. And that seems to be going
09:37ahead. But what do you think about that one? It's a bizarre one, isn't it? He obviously spent
09:42last season on loan at Leicester and he obviously performed quite well. Yeah. First half of the
09:48season he did really well, didn't he? Yeah. Yeah. Obviously, again,
09:52Renegade wasn't ideal for them, but there was definitely a glimpse of what he can do. And he was
09:55definitely their key player in the last chunk of the season. And yeah, coming back to Brighton,
10:01you kind of hope that he would step up from there, perhaps have another loan deal to presumably
10:10kind of a smaller club to kind of get more minutes at. So to me, to go to Chelsea is bizarre.
10:15Is he going to play? Is he going to play there? Yeah. You just think surely not with the amount
10:20of money that Chelsea is spending in those attacking areas, that he's not going to get
10:24any more minutes at Chelsea than he was to get at Brighton. So a bizarre one all round, really.
10:29But again, I do wish him well. He's another player that's got a lot of talent.
10:34He's a huge talent. Yeah. Yeah. And I asked Perzella about it in a press conference ahead of the Man City
10:40game. And he wants to keep him. He loves him. He likes his character. He likes his ability.
10:48And he sees him as a big player for Brighton in the future. So there's no obligation to buy
10:53from Chelsea. And it looks as though he probably returned to Brighton after that and then try and,
10:58you know, get back into the first team again after, after that. But, but yeah, another,
11:04another strange one with this trend. It's been a funny transfer window. I see this, this season,
11:08a few, few deals and everyone by surprise. So I think that's sort of what's going to happen.
11:14That's going to be what's happened already. And what is going to happen on transfer deadline day
11:18in terms of outgoings, it seems a bit quiet on the incoming front. A few rumbles about,
11:24you know, these players are moving out. Are they making way for, you know, one big sign-in to come
11:30in? I'm going to throw a name at you, Sam. Harvey Elliott. Is that, could you see that one?
11:35There's been a few whispers of him perhaps coming in on deadline day. Yeah, that would be a great
11:41sign-in for Brighton. I think he's another player with loads of talent and clearly has been impressed
11:47for Liverpool and obviously the youth team for England as well. He was excellent over the summer.
11:53He was, wasn't he? Yeah. Yeah. And I think there's definitely a real player that Brighton can make
11:58the most of if they were to get a deal done for him. And with Liverpool now signing Isak to add to
12:03their attacking ranks, which are already absolutely stacked, you do wonder where Harvey Elliott's going
12:09to fit and how many minutes he's going to get in that team, to be honest. I mean, there's so many attacking
12:15players now that Liverpool are going to be trying to keep happy, to give minutes to. He's had two
12:22strikers this summer and yeah, you wonder how they're going to be able to.
12:28He's going to have to go, he's going to have to leave today, isn't he? He's going to go somewhere.
12:31I think so. Yeah. I think so. Yeah. I think if Brighton were to put their name in the hat on
12:37deadline day, I think he would definitely give a lot of thought to that, I think. He knows it will
12:42come in and get a lot of minutes for Brighton and time will tell, I guess. And I know that it's
12:47probably unlikely, but Colby Maynou is another one. He's been speaking for the club about securing
12:52a loan move away. I bet Man Utd are, I think, adamant that they will not let him leave.
12:56They won't let him leave on loan, yeah.
12:58No, particularly after the injury to Matthias Kuna. And seemingly Mason Mounts picked up
13:02another knock as well. So I thought that will get Maynou some more minutes at Man Utd than he's
13:07probably expecting. But I think in World Cup year, that's why Maynou is so keen to make sure he gets
13:15minutes this season. So if there was an opportunity, I'm sure Brighton will be in for him as well.
13:20Yeah. Interesting. Interesting. Well, follow all the latest on the Sussex World website. We'll be
13:26keeping all of the Brighton deals up to date as they happen. And we'll keep an eye out for any
13:34incomings as well. But thanks. Thanks for going through that with me today, Sam. Cheers, Darren.
