Phil Smith is back to discuss what Ajax striker Brian Brobbey will bring to Sunderland if as expected he joins on deadline day
Transcript
00:00Really interesting player this, so currently at Ajax, he did have a spell at RB Leipzig,
00:05but moved back to the Eredivisie.
00:08Some really interesting statistics, I've been watching a lot of his clips
00:11since the news broke last night, trying to understand a little bit more about him.
00:16So only four goals in the Eredivisie last season,
00:19but I can't stress enough that that's a really interesting quirk
00:22in terms of it doesn't really reflect his goal-scoring prowess across his career.
00:27So in the previous two Eredivisie seasons before last one, he scored 18 and 13 respectively,
00:32so he really can be a goal-scorer.
00:35According to Wisecout, as well as expected goals for the last calendar year,
00:38it was actually 14.61 and he only scored eight goals in that time.
00:43So that suggests he's been on a little bit of a poor streak in terms of his finishing,
00:47but it tells you that he does get into good goal-scoring positions.
00:50Generally speaking, the story of his career would suggest that in time,
00:53those goal-scoring numbers are going to improve again
00:55because generally speaking, he's a pretty decent finisher
00:58and he's still getting into good positions.
01:00What I think is clear about Broby from analysing his stats
01:04and also watching his clips
01:06is it will offer something a little bit different to Wilson East
01:08to analyse Meander and that he's much more of a creator
01:11and he's much more heavily involved in build-up play.
01:14Now, Meander's stats are actually outstanding
01:16in terms of the chances that he creates for his team-mates,
01:20the number of passes he plays in the final third,
01:23the number of chances he creates.
01:25But that's normally through his dribbling,
01:27so if we think about Meander at his best,
01:29it's taking players on, it's driving into space
01:31and bringing his team-mates into the game that way.
01:34Isidore, really a lot more of a finisher,
01:36especially when he plays in the final third,
01:38not hugely involved in build-up play.
01:40More so in the little flashes we've seen him on the left wing,
01:42but certainly up front, more of a finisher,
01:43more of a guy who wants to run in behind and chase passes.
01:47Broby, watching his clips, is really strong,
01:49really comfortable getting his back into the defender,
01:51really comfortable receiving passes fired into his feet,
01:54playing little first-time layoffs,
01:56bringing others into the game,
01:58creating shots for them around the box.
02:00I think he's a really strong creator
02:02and that's something that definitely is different
02:04to what Sunderland have
02:04and really comes through from watching his clips.
02:06Just to underline that, his stats last season,
02:09when, as I say, it was not necessarily
02:11the best season of his career generally,
02:13still really strong in certain aspects.
02:15So he was in the top 15% of assists per 90.
02:20So this was across what FB Ref would term
02:24as the next 14 divisions,
02:25so outside of Europe's five biggest leagues,
02:28if you like, but really strong numbers.
02:29Top 2% for progressive passes received,
02:32top 12% for combined expected goals
02:35and expected assists per 90 minutes,
02:37and also in the top 18% for key passes per 90.
02:40So again, if you like,
02:42his construction statistics are really impressive.
02:44And as I say, last year,
02:45it wasn't really a stronger season.
02:47If you go back to the previous two Eredivisie seasons,
02:50his goal scoring and his shooting stats were really good,
02:53but his passing numbers and his creation numbers
02:55were even stronger than they were last season
02:58when they were actually very good.
02:59So it's clear to me that Brobby is someone
03:01who's going to bring something a little bit different,
03:03maybe a little bit more comfortable
03:04with back-to-goal and some current options.
03:06Probably a little bit similar to Mark Guiu in that sense
03:10in terms of kind of some of the skill sets
03:12of a traditional number nine,
03:13although I think Brobby, from what it looks like,
03:15is a bit more likes to play with his feet
03:18rather than Guiu, who we talked about
03:19as a really kind of traditional target man number nine,
03:21if you like.
03:22So it's going to be really interesting to see how he goes.
03:24As I say, not coming off his best season,
03:26but someone who's got a really strong record
03:28over a period of time,
03:30kind of top-level European football.
03:32So we're going to be really interested to see
03:33how he goes, if that deal does go through.
03:35As I say, please bear in mind
03:37when you're watching all these videos,
03:38there may be one or two more a day, we'll see.
03:40But this is a really fast changing environment.
03:43But as it stands,
03:44looks like Trude and Brobby might be coming in,
03:47which would suggest that Mark Guiu will return to Chelsea
03:49and probably that John Lassoumi won't sign from Bologna.
03:52But let's see how the day develops.
03:54Hopefully that's given you a little bit of insight.
