Phil Smith discusses Sunderland's transfer window so far and what might be next
Transcript
00:00about this will obviously be something to sign a lot of the work that they've you know they're
00:04doing in the transfer market and kind of already done really um before the pre-season program
00:09starts and just thinking about where where it's going to head next a lot of talk about jordan
00:14henderson who of course has announced this morning that he's leaving ajax but i have to wait and see
00:18how that one develops but the the new the sort of the word behind the scenes of someone double
00:23summer has been pretty consistent that henderson isn't is it hasn't been a target um and that is
00:28you know very much still the music at the moment that henderson isn't the target so at this stage
00:32i'll be highly surprised to see henderson signing of course we'll sort of wait and see and football
00:37things can change very quickly so we'll keep a close eye on that um i think it's clear that
00:42sunland are looking for a goalkeeper um obviously they try to send last hand bolker who has instead
00:47got saudi arabia john neon um unfortunately looks increasingly likely that george petrovic will go
00:52to bournemouth i think that was one where although sunland were clearly interested even from very
00:56early stages you know my sources were kind of saying that they understood that there was a huge
01:00amount of competition for player who's played in the premier league had a really good season
01:04stroudsburg last year unfortunately that has proved to be the case so i think if we if we're thinking
01:10about the strategy that it was clear someone going to go down this season was to invest proactively
01:15and early in players who they felt could immediately improve the team i think we're still a couple of
01:22signings away from making that a reality certainly a goalkeeper i think looks like it's going to be
01:27one of those and it's clear that they need another centre-back i think that's absolutely obvious
01:31and i think dan ballard and luco nine and we'll both get the chance to step up but i think
01:36suddenly need to add to that group and i wouldn't be surprised if we see them invest a decent chunk
01:41of money on that um clearly we can see as well from the players that someone's been linked with
01:45they're looking in the striker market although that one's going to be an interesting one to watch
01:49because i think they will trust isidore mayenda um to perform up front in the premier league next
01:54season but it's clearly an area where they're looking to invest i've seen a lot of chat about
01:59sort of the finances of all these deals and how someone's approaching things um maybe from a neutral
02:04perspective as well a little bit surprised a little bit sort of critical about the money that's being
02:08spent on certain players i think it's really important to stress from a sunland point of view that
02:12their position is an unusual one coming up to the premier league compared to most teams who have
02:18benefited from parachute payments and also because someone had done so without relying on a huge
02:23amount of owner funding so their um profit and sustainability rules positions coming into the
02:28season was incredibly strong remarkably strong for promote premier league club had a significantly
02:33smaller wage bill um than the most clubs do coming up so the the liabilities not just next season
02:39but future seasons considerably smaller they ran much smaller losses than most premier league teams
02:45and most teams promote to the premier league have been running in the championship that again
02:49gives them extra headroom remember that before we even get to the sales of joe bellingham and tommy
02:54watson and they had already sold jack clark last summer now they had invested some of that money in
02:59players such as wilson isidor and milan aleksic but even so you know they were potentially i wouldn't
03:05be surprised if the last set of accounts so the year that they've got promoted into the
03:09premier league and they actually turn a profit which is highly unusual compared to most clubs who get
03:13promoted who do so what a loss so i think it's really important to say that sondland through need
03:19and the position they were in had to invest significantly they needed to bring their squad
03:23up to premier league level they needed to invest in top tier x b women's players and they also had the
03:28luxury because of the way they did things that they could be really aggressive really early because
03:31their financial position especially in relation to profit and sustainability rules was really really
03:36strong now obviously a big part of this is making sure that sondland don't saddle themselves
03:41with contracts and do deals that can damage them in future years i think we will see sondland spend
03:46some more money definitely i think we will see them invest another some more fees around the level
03:51that we've seen so far but it's not going to go on and on and on i think it's been pretty clear that
03:55sondland we're going to invest in the core of their team and then try and use some maybe some creative
04:00free agent deals we've already seen one with ray nil though and i wouldn't be surprised if towards the
04:04back end of the window we're beginning to see some a little bit of loan action as well to kind of build
04:07out that squad so i think it's really important to to keep this in perspective someone i'm going to
04:12keep buying players for huge fees all summer long this is a concerted effort to invest in the core of
04:17the team and to do so early and so that these players can hit the ground running get up to match
04:23fitness integrate into the group so someone can start the season strongly someone they're in a
04:27luxurious position through their own work their financial and caution in the last few years to be
04:32able to go and do that to move early to pay a premium for players and to get try and get their
04:37it will slow down towards the end of the summer i think that is absolutely um inevitable but it's
04:43really important to keep the spending perspective so far once the thing goes through we think the
04:47spend will be around the 8 million mark remember that joe bellingham's already being sold for 30
04:51million tommy watson for around 10 million when you think about the the financial sort of riches of
04:57the premier league the tv money even before you bring an extra sponsorship extra ticket money
05:01you're beginning to see that this isn't a this isn't a wild overspend from sunderland this is
05:06targeted investment it's not to say it'll work out we don't know that um but yeah i think it's
05:11really important to to keep that in perspective so now we've got a lot of support for a while so
05:16then i'm going to call this video to an end for now hopefully that brings you up to speed with a few
05:19things and some interesting stuff discussed we will be back in some capacity obviously sunderland
05:24start pre-season at gateshead and south shields on saturday we will definitely have some
05:27sort of on the whistle content after that exactly what shit that takes i'm not sure yet but yeah
05:32that's it thanks for watching and speak to you soon
