03:01Tonight.
03:06The following presentation has been closed captioned.
03:11Join us now as the Disney Channel salutes The American Teacher.
03:20Once I realized it by opening up to kids and letting them have the freedom to learn and to make it a learning environment,
03:28then what happens is those kids teach you things you never thought about.
03:32In Kent, Washington, the students of international marketing teacher Phil Asernio learn by doing.
03:37And what they're doing is nothing short of remarkable.
03:40Hello, I'm Michael Eisner, head of the Walt Disney Company.
03:43Five years ago, Phil Asernio accepted a teaching position at Kentwood High School with the challenge to start an international marketing program.
03:51Today, with more than 440 students enrolled, it is the largest program of its kind in the United States.
03:57The reason that America has been so successful as a country for many years is because we've had that entrepreneurial spirit.
04:04And it's almost like I want to teach that to kids.
04:07I want them to engage in that and get excited about learning.
04:10How are the Juice Brothers?
04:12You guys getting along today?
04:14Yeah.
04:15Great.
04:16How's the new juicer working?
04:19The same.
04:20Phil attracts all sorts.
04:22And some students that typically you'll find are struggling to find a reason to stay in school, they will find that niche in the marketing classroom.
04:33And he can help every student find a way to apply their interest and learn about it.
04:40And see the big picture and realize that marketing can apply to almost every area of life and every career.
04:47Kyle.
04:48Nice to meet you.
04:49How you doing?
04:50Every student in this program at the beginning of the school year picks an interest, something that they really want to explore all year.
04:57Then they're asked to make five contacts with companies that are connected to that industry or that interest.
05:03And then we study how they market worldwide, how they sell, how they promote.
05:07We analyze total quality management, what do they look for in their people, what kind of educational background, what kinds of skills.
05:14That's an ongoing process and we call that home base.
05:18Every student at the beginning of the year picks a country that they're going to study the entire year.
05:23So a company and a country.
05:25Then they learn how to interconnect that.
05:27Then what we do in this program, a lot of kids are in foreign language.
05:31Those kids are able to connect that foreign language to that interest.
05:35So it's like a five step approach where you have the company, the country, a foreign language.
05:41Maybe you connect your history class and then you connect it into a trade show environment where you've got to display that interest.
05:47Why do you guys think you can market these products or these services all over the world?
05:51Young people don't want to ski anymore.
05:53They're looking more towards surfing and skateboarding.
05:56Whoo!
05:57If you give somebody responsibility and you set the expectations and you give them the freedom to do that,
06:03and they come through and they feel empowered and their self esteem goes way up and great things happen.
06:08I mean, that's what education is all about.
06:10You know, it's teaching kids to feel like they have a say in what's going on.
06:14Well, maybe like in this paragraph here you just read a little bit about how we could hook her up to a satellite if we needed to or she could fax us.
06:21He's an outstanding teacher. He is. He doesn't give you boundaries. It's all up to you.
06:26It's your creativity. It's your thinking. It's your analyzing.
06:28So it really helps you when you're out of, you know, high school and you're into college and you're on your own.
06:33If you place a group of kids in charge of the candy business, a group of kids in charge of the pizza business, the espresso bar, the juice, the donuts,
06:42those kids are learning how to be entrepreneurial. They're learning how to manage. They're learning how to perform.
06:47They're learning how to evaluate because they evaluate their employees if you're a team leader.
06:51They're learning public relations, customer service, inventory control.
06:55This approach, I don't tell them a lot of what I do. I give them a lot of generalizations and I give them the freedom to do it.
07:02And then as they go through that process, they start to learn, my goodness, look at all these things I've learned.
07:08Here's a man that's taken a lot of theory and content and absorbed it into some practicality and then believes so strongly in students and kids in general
07:19that even when he's a little atypical, you give him that range because you know it's going to come out in the best interest for the kids.
07:25So he's a great person. My biggest worry is someday he'll want to go do something else and I don't want to lose him out of here.
07:31We were the only high school in America to be part of APEC. It was in all the newspapers.
07:36And essentially, I sat down with our kids and I said, why don't we get a booth? Why don't we approach this like a real trade show?
07:42Well, I hope to export my coffee coolers. It's a canned espresso. It's a latte or a mocha in a can.
07:49And I hope to export it to Japan or to an Asian country, basically anywhere in the world, I hope.
07:56I want him to be confident. I want him to walk out of this program having the confidence that if they set their mind to accomplish a dream or a goal, they can reach that goal and dream.
08:06He's the kind of teacher that can look at you and talk to you and find out what you're interested in and put you on the right path.
08:13There's not enough to be said about Mr. Eisenhu. He's a wonderful teacher and that's a well overused word, but there's no other way to describe him.
08:22It's about showing kids that not only you care about them, that you're going to be there for them when they're crying.
08:29You're going to be there for them when they're laughing. You're going to be there for them when they're having some challenges in their life.
08:34And you show them that you really care.
08:37Then when you see those kids five or six or ten years later, that's immediately what you think about the first time you see them.
08:43Some special moment that you had with them as a teacher that you couldn't put a price on for anything.
08:50The Disney Channel salutes the American teacher is presented in partnership with Campbell Soup Company.
09:04You're watching the Disney Channel's free preview, our special gift to you, now through Monday.
09:09Next, get a sneak peek at all the great family entertainment you'll find on the Disney Channel in the coming months on the preview show.
09:16Then it's the swashbuckling hit, The Three Musketeers, followed by the Academy Award winning movie, Gandhi.
09:23Here's Amy, the Disney Channel operator, to tell us how easy it is to become a subscriber to the Disney Channel.
09:31Hello, Amy? You're on.
09:35Here I am, Shelley. Hi, I'm Amy, an operator at the Disney Channel.

11:33Here's Robbie Benson at Walt Disney World to let you in on the variety of programs for the whole family.
11:39And the great programs for grown-ups that are part of the Disney Channel every day.
11:43There's no place on Earth like this place, Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
11:58Hi, I'm Robbie Benson along with my daughter Lyric on behalf of the Disney Channel.
12:02We're having a great time here at Epcot.
12:04But right now, we'd like you to join us for a very special treat.
12:08In the next half hour, we've got your backstage pass to all the great shows upcoming on the Disney Channel.
12:13Plus, we'll take a look at some of the magic created here at Walt Disney World.
12:17In fact, the only place you'll get access to this variety of Disney magic is on the Disney Channel.
12:23It's always your window in the world of Disney, 24 hours a day.
12:26And I know, because my family watches the Disney Channel.
12:29And we love it.
12:30Yeah, we do.
12:31And I guarantee there's something special for every member of your family.
12:34So today, I've arranged a special visit, a Disney backstage pass, compliments of the Disney Channel.
12:41Sound good?
12:42Sounds great.
12:43What are we waiting for?
12:44I don't know.
12:45Let's go.
12:59What a gas.
13:00Here in Florida, we have something special we never enjoyed at Disneyland.
13:03A blessing of science.
13:06There's enough land here to hold all the ideas and plans we could possibly imagine.
13:11Walt Disney was more than a movie maker.
13:13He was a dreamer on a grand scale, a visionary and a futurist.
13:16Walt shared many of those dreams with the world in 1955 with the opening of Disneyland.
13:21But that was just a beginning for Walt.
13:23Not limited by space or his imagination, Walt took Disneyland a step further by developing his Walt Disney World project in Florida.
13:30Sadly, Walt passed on before all of his dreams at Walt Disney World could be built.
13:34But the company Disney founded continued and thrived and today, Walt Disney World has not one but three spectacular theme parks, resort hotels, a shopping village, even water parks.
13:44A whole Walt Disney World filled with the Disney tradition of family fun.
13:48Walt Disney World
13:50We're here at the latest addition to Walt Disney World.
13:54It's a wild, wet, snowy place for fun in the sun.
13:57Snowy?
13:58Yeah, that's right.
13:59See, we're here on our Disney Channel Backstage Pass for a look at the new Blizzard Beach water park.
14:05What do blizzards have to do with beaches?
14:08Why don't we just go to the source to find out?
14:10What do blizzards and beaches have in common?
14:13Well, actually, the blizzards and beaches don't have much in common at all.
14:16But if you take one look at Blizzard Beach, you'll find that this isn't a common place.
14:20We kept kind of coming back to the alpine theme, which we found appealing.
14:24The challenges were obvious, you know, like building a mountain the size of Mount Gushmore over here, creating all the snow that you see.
14:30But it also afforded us with the opportunity to come up with some of the fastest, steepest, wildest water rides in the world.
14:36For instance, we've got Summit Plummet, which is a lot of fun to get to.
14:40It's 120 feet tall, and you get a great view, but then you have to come down, Walt.
14:44Okay.
14:45Why don't you guys sit down, and I can better show you what it's all about from up top, okay?
14:48Well, great. Sounds great.
14:49Here, have a seat.
14:50Sit down.
14:51There you go.
14:52Okay, come on.
14:53What, huh?
14:54You're not coming.
14:55I'm not going up there.
15:00The Family Fun just never ends at Walt Disney World.
15:19And the only other place you can find this variety of quality family entertainment is here on the Disney Channel.
15:25That's right.
15:26And the Family Fun starts with the magical world of Disney.
15:29Presented by Kodak every Sunday night.
15:31And throughout 1995, we'll be featuring a different Disney animated film every month.
15:36Including the world television premiere of The Return of Jeff R.
15:40The hit sequel to Aladdin.
15:42You are astonishingly perceptive.
15:44Of course, you can snoop around with the fox and the hound.
15:48I'm a fox.
15:49I'm a hound dog.
15:50And relive the adventure of Ichabod Crane.
15:53Yeah!
15:54Or go on a wild ride with Mr. Toad.
15:59Bang, bang, bang.
16:00The magical world of Disney also presents a fantastic lineup with modern live action Disney hits like the premiere of Angels in the Outfield.
16:07Starring Danny Glover, Tony Danza and the angelic Christopher Lloyd.
16:11How did he do that?
16:13This guy was like, you know, a contemporary kind of angel.
16:18Has his angels' way.
16:19He has his powers.
16:20And the fact that he could only be visible to the kid.
16:23No one can see me or hear me but you.
16:25And your family can cash in on the Disney Channel with young Brian Bonsal in the Walt Disney Pictures hit Blank Check.
16:31This is a story about a little kid who gets more than he could ever imagine in the world.
16:38There's a kid named Preston who pretty much hates his life.
16:42So one day he's riding his bike and he gets hit by a car by this bad guy.
16:46And the guy gives him a check.
16:49Blank check.
16:50With the bad guys in hot pursuit and a million bucks in his backpack,
16:54Brian Bonsal knows exactly what to do.
16:57I'm gonna go buy some stuff.
17:00Plus, go on a wilderness adventure and learn the legend of the wolf in White Fang 2, Myth of the White Wolf.
17:11The magical world of Disney is also the showcase for classic Disney films
17:15like the exciting family adventure, Swiss Family Robinson.
17:19Bullseye!
17:20And the ever popular Peach Dragon.
17:25So remember, when it comes to your family's Disney favorites, both past and present,
17:30the place to find them is on the magical world of Disney presented by Kodak every Sunday night.
17:36But the family fair doesn't stop there because along with those exceptional movies,
17:40the Disney Channel offers a terrific lineup of family series like Herbie the Love Bug.
17:47For a fantastic underwater adventure, your kids can take the plunge with the newest splash hit, Ocean Girl.
17:53A favorite with families and only on the Disney Channel.
17:55Some other creature swimming with the whale.
17:59Ocean Girl is the story of Neri, who's a young girl who's had little contact with the modern world or the future world as we're about to know her.
18:05And she's discovered by two young boys from an underwater city of the future.
18:09The truth of what I am must be here on the island somewhere.
18:14I'm glad that everyone can see it because it's a worthwhile show.
18:17It promotes not only North Queensland, but it promotes conservation as well.
18:21If you think you know what mystery lies beneath the sea, wait till you meet Ocean Girl.
18:26And of course, we'll be presenting the popular Disney Channel series, Avonlea.
18:33Many special guest stars have appeared in this Emmy Award winning series,
18:36which follows the lives of the King family as they grow up together on Prince Edward Island.
18:41And that tradition continues this season with a special guest appearance by Academy Award winners,
18:46Maureen Stapleton and Faye Dunaway.
18:48Aren't we the brazen pair?
18:50Ann.
18:51It's a lovely story about people who are, you know, fallible and funny and eccentric and loving.
19:01Avonlea is certainly well worthwhile.
19:04It's for children and adults.
19:06I mean, the adults can watch it and get as much pleasure as the young people can get out of it.
19:11And by popular request, coming in October and November, watch for Ann of Avonlea.
19:16Pleased to meet you, ma'am.
19:17Pleased to meet you.
19:18And Ann of Green Gables, the two miniseries which inspired the Disney Channel's award winning show.
19:23I always heard that Prince Edward Island was the most beautiful place in Canada.
19:27On Friday nights, your family will want to stay home and gather around the television set for Triple Feature Friday.
19:32Three films back to back with one wacky theme.
19:35Like this collection of Fred, Fred, Fred McMurray films.
19:39We've got Inventor Fred.
19:41We've dubbed the Floor.
19:43Flying Fred.
19:45You think those people at the Pentagon could at least have given us a couple of hundred thousand on a petty cash or something.
19:50And frightening Fred.
19:51Killed it for money.
19:53And for a woman.
19:54Or try a triple dose of fun with Rex Harrison.
19:57A man who walks with the animals, talks with the animals, grunts and squeaks and squawks with the animals.
20:05There's also Rex on the plane.
20:07And where's that soggy plane?
20:10In plane, in plane.
20:13Or ghostly Rex.
20:14I think it's very mean of you frightening people.
20:17Childish too.
20:18Now you've got it.
20:19One night, one theme, three fantastic movies all on Triple Feature Friday.
20:24On Saturday, pull into Disney Drive-In.
20:27It's the place to catch up with some of your familiar characters from classic Disney TV shows.
20:31Why?
20:32Because you asked for it.
20:33The Disney Channel mailroom has been swamped with letters asking us to deliver your old Disney favorites including Gallagher,
20:39the further adventures of Spin and Marty, Annette and Zorro.
20:42Who are you?
20:45Now get on your horse and ride.
20:47And it wouldn't be Disney Drive-In without a fantastic variety of motion pictures.
20:51Remember these incredible wildlife adventures?
20:54This is Perry.
20:55And this is her story.
20:58Wow.
20:59What in creation were these?
21:02One sure was bigger, all right.
21:04But it just didn't have that fun-loving look.
21:09There, Nicky.
21:12You asked for him?
21:14Now I hope you will be very happy together.
21:17Don't forget, you asked for it and you got it.
21:19Classic Disney favorites every Saturday on Disney Drive-In.
21:26Get ready for the Disney Channel's 40th anniversary celebration of the all-American television classic.
21:33Come along and join the Jamboree in October as the Disney Channel presents 40 episodes of the original Mickey Mouse.
21:38Mickey Mouse Club handpicked by the original Mouseketeers.
21:41We're the Mouseketeers.
21:43We wanna say hello.
21:45Plus, take a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of this television classic as the Disney Channel presents the all-new special, The Mickey Mouse Club Story.
21:53For more family viewing, the Disney Channel offers an additional line-up of family movies to share with your kids like the U.S. television premiere of Stanley's Dragon.
22:05Come on.
22:06Calm down, boy.
22:07Down.
22:08Take it easy.
22:09Out.
22:10In more exclusive specials, the stars come out to honor some of America's unsung heroes, our teachers.
22:22Teachers like these are stars to guide us into the future.
22:26In the past, celebrities such as Melanie Griffith, Morgan Freeman and Dustin Hoffman have paid tribute to some of the finest educators around the country.
22:34And the outstanding performing arts teacher is...
22:37This year, from Washington, D.C., the Walt Disney Company and McDonald's present the sixth annual American Teacher Awards.
22:43And meet dozens of the best young musicians from around the United States when 75 kids come together for an extraordinary concert experience.
22:52Join host Paula Zahn and special guest conductors for the fourth annual Disney's Young Musician Symphony Orchestra.
23:07The Disney Channel is also your family's backstage passport to the exciting world of Disney.
23:12Take a special sneak peek at the creation of the very first fully computer-animated motion picture.
23:17It's a story about toys.
23:19The secret is toys obviously don't move when you see them.
23:22Okay, everybody, coast is clear.
23:24We all had faith in when we were little kids was that toys could come to life.
23:29The world of Disney is part of all of us.

23:59We love to watch Avonlea.
24:00I've never seen such delinquencies.
24:03The Disney Channel is the only premium channel we have.
24:05I know we can turn it on at any time and enjoy whatever's going to be there.
24:09We love the Disney Channel!
24:12I really love Ocean Girl.
24:14Good family entertainment.
24:19My husband and I grew up with Disney and we hope our children grow up with Disney.
24:23Well, Eric, as part of our backstage pass from the Disney Channel, we're going from today's world of tomorrow to yesterday's world of tomorrow.
24:31What?
24:32Well, you see, instead of seeing the real future from the present, we're going to see a fantasy future from the past.
24:38But wouldn't the future from the past be the present?
24:42Don't confuse your daddy, okay?
24:44Come on, come on.
24:45Let me explain.
24:46Walt Disney was a futurist and a visionary.
24:49He was always interested in what new innovations tomorrow would hold for us all.
24:53He took a first step toward envisioning that future at Disneyland and the very first Tomorrowland.
24:58But with the passing of time, yesterday's tomorrow became today's yesterday.
25:02Dad, you're doing it again.
25:04I'm sorry.
25:05Disney Imagineers had a problem.
25:07In a world of ever-changing technology, how can you portray tomorrow in a way that doesn't become yesterday too fast?
25:13Lyric, this is Paul Osterhaus.
25:16Hi, Robbie.
25:17How are you doing?
25:18Hi, Lyric.
25:19Nice to meet you.
25:20Nice to meet you.
25:21Paul is a Disney Imagineer.
25:22Paul also helped create the new Tomorrowland.
25:23So how did you do it, Paul?
25:25Well, actually, it was kind of simple.
25:27We had to look to the past for our future.
25:29Oh, no.
25:30Not you, too.
25:31But what we did about four years ago, we got a team together to try and create a new Tomorrowland.
25:36And we decided to go whimsy and something more romantic and optimistic.
25:40And we decided to pick a 1930s future, a machine age future.
25:44The future of amazing stories and popular science comic books and science fiction.
25:49And really, that's what dictated the style here.
25:51Wow.
25:52It seems like the new Tomorrowland has something for just about everyone.
25:55Oh, it sure does.
25:56But now, let me show you something that's only for the brave.
25:59The new alien encounter.
26:01Come on.
26:02Uh-oh.
26:03You come with me.
26:06Oh, no, I won't.
26:07But you don't know how the other one.
26:09Yeah, right.
26:10Whoa!
26:17Whoa, wasn't that great?
26:19I mean, where else could Lyric and I have such a great time together?
26:22There's no place like Walt Disney World for family fun except, well, the Disney Channel.
26:27At the Disney Channel, they know that all kids, from toddlers to teens, need their own entertainment, too.
26:32And that's a big part of why we have the Disney Channel in our house.
26:35Whoa!
26:36What's the matter, Dad?
26:38Oh, no, nothing.
26:40Who's your friend?
26:41This is Mr. Alien.
26:43Hey, Mr. Alien Man.
26:45And no matter what their age, your aliens, I mean kids, can find their favorite Disney characters and other great shows every day of the week from dawn till dusk.
26:52Okay.
26:53Let's go.
26:55Mornings on the Disney Channel are for the younger kids.
26:57It's the time to catch a fraggle, have a quack attack, or do a song and dance.
27:01Check this out.
27:15Mornings on the Disney Channel are cordially invited to party.

27:55Sheesh, Spook.
27:57Look at all of us.
27:58Why are they making cubby cats out of us bears, Yuki?
28:01Monsters aren't real. Monsters aren't real. Monsters aren't...
28:05Cause you can't keep a good dog, can't keep a good, I say you can't keep a good dog down.
28:14Yuki, Charlie, and Scooby-Dooby-Doo are just some of the animated favorites that are a part of the Disney Channel's TuneIn Tuesday.
28:22Thursdays, the afternoon fun continues into the night for teenagers with all-new episodes of...
28:27Every Thursday, teams will find hip new episodes of MMC and guess who's back, Chasen and Tiffany, with another season of great dance.
28:37Baby Jake, you're playing that song.

28:40Comedy.
28:41And music.
28:42I wanna tell you I love your way.
28:45Every day, yeah, yeah.
28:48Following MMC and quickly becoming another favorite is the cool new series, Hollywood Lives.
28:54I just really try and project positive energy and I go in and I keep my mind open to whatever they're gonna send my way.
29:01Focusing on the real-life stories of several young adults, Hollywood Lives chronicles the journey of these kids' search for fame and fortune
29:08from hometown USA to the big city streets of Hollywood.
29:11I always get casted for bad girls. The good girls, it's too boring. That's what it is.
29:16Adding to the lineup of cool, fun shows for older kids is a terrific selection of premiere movies.
29:21Baby dinosaurs.
29:23Outstanding.
29:24Look what I found!
29:25Look what I found!
29:32Ghost just cleared five feet easy. Billy, we got ourselves a jumper.
29:36So remember, mornings and afternoons have excellent cartoons and shows for younger kids.
29:41Plus, older kids will love MMC, world premiere movies, and the cool new series, Hollywood Lives.
29:46I know I can count on the Disney Channel's quality programming for my kids, and you can too, 24 hours a day.

30:26It's great for the children.
30:28We don't have to worry about what they're watching at any time.
30:31It's always good, wholesome entertainment for them.
30:33We love the Disney Channel!
30:35Well, here we are in Hollywood.
30:37Well, you might think we're in Hollywood, but actually, we're at the Disney MGM Studios at Walt Disney World.
30:43Now, I bet you didn't know that there actually is a thriving movie industry right here in Central Florida.
30:49As a matter of fact, there's an entire working production facility right here at the Disney MGM Studios.
30:55Dozens of movies and TV shows have been shot here, like the Disney Channel's MMC.

31:50I turned around, and here was this big six-foot rabbit leaning up against a lamppost.
31:56Hard to believe a fella can ride through this country without having his liver turn white.
31:59Yeah.
32:00A fella could even think about settling down and getting married.
32:03My corn I take serious, because it's my corn.
32:08And my potatoes and my tomatoes and fences I take note of, because they're mine.
32:14But this war is not mine, and I take no note of it.
32:17Another Hollywood favorite, Gregory Peck, graces the screen with Academy Award-winning classics like To Kill a Mockingbird.
32:23In our courts, all men are created equal.
32:30Someone's got to take the responsibility if the job's going to get done. You think that's easy?
32:35Commit, Josephson. If you're not committed to anything, you're just taking up space.
32:40On Tuesdays, The American Legacy presents outstanding films and documentaries that capture the history of our country like Scenic Wonders of America.
32:48This was no friendly, easy land. Life here was harsh and challenging.
32:54The century that made America great.
32:56Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.
33:00The American Legacy also invites you to embark on the most fascinating journey of all times.

33:33But the extraordinary lineup for adults doesn't end there because the Disney Channel also pays tribute to your all-time favorite comedians like Abbott and Costello.
33:41Any time you make a date with me, keep it.

42:16How do you secretly transport an 8,000-pound elephant through 200 miles of dangerous jungle terrain during the height of the Vietnam War?
42:25The answer is simple, very carefully.
42:28Hello, I'm Michael Eisner, head of the Walt Disney Company.
42:31Tonight's light-hearted Disney adventure, Operation Dumbo Drop, was inspired by a true story.
42:37When the idea came up to do a movie, there was one huge obstacle standing in the way.
42:43Where do you find an elephant with the right temperament to perform the difficult task required to make this kind of feature?
42:50After an extensive worldwide search, the production crew found the answer in California,
42:56where they located the perfect elephant to play their leading lady.
43:00And the nice part is, they got it for peanuts.
43:09Enjoy the night's feature.
