Like The House I Live In, this film warns that Americans will lose their country if they let themselves be turned into "suckers" by the forces of fanaticism and hatred. This thesis is rendered more powerful by the ever-present example of Nazi Germany, whose capsule history is dramatized as part of this film. There's a great deal of good sense in this film and more than a bit of wartime populism: "Let's not think about 'we' and 'they.' Let's think about 'us'!"]
It's interesting to think of this film in the light of Cold War anti-Communist politics, which really came into their own in the year this film was made. Were the witch-hunting politicians and citizens of the late Forties and early Fifties protecting the people, or were they themselves acting like "suckers?"

00:13Henry here got on the train with $200.
00:16He couldn't see any harm in a friendly game of cards.
00:20What if the other men were strangers?
00:23And take Joe Collins.
00:25He's got a nice wife at home.
00:28But he met this girl at the bar and she looked after the first couple of drinks.
00:58There's a good old-fashioned word for people like this.
01:01We call them suckers.
01:04And there are other people.
01:06People who stay up nights figuring out how to take away what they've got.
01:14There are all kinds of games.
01:16Mike here, for instance.
01:18He's got everything in me.
01:19He's young.
01:20He's healthy.
01:21He's got a job.
01:23And he's got a plenty of food.
01:25Big factories to make things a man can use.
01:29Big cities to do the business of a big couple.
01:32And people.
01:33Lots of people.
01:34Enough to work the farm and build the factories.
01:38Dig the mines.
01:41Run the business.
01:43All kinds of people.
01:44People from different countries with different religions.
01:48Different colored skins.
01:51Free people.
01:54They can live together and work together and build America together because they're free.
02:00Free to vote.
02:01To say what they please.
02:03Go to their own churches.
02:08To pick their own jobs.
02:12You know, Mike's got something, all right.
02:16He's got America.
02:21But there are guys who stay up nights figuring out how to take that away from him.
02:27I happen to know the facts.
02:30My friends, I'm just an average American.
02:33But I'm an American American.
02:35And some of the things I see in this country of ours make my blood boil.
02:39I see people with foreign acclimat.
02:42I see Negroes holding jobs that belong to me and you.
02:47Now, I ask you, if we allow this thing to go on, what's going to become of us real Americans?
02:53I've heard this kind of talk before, but I never expected to hear it in America.
02:58This fellow seems to know what he's talking about.
03:01What are we real Americans going to do about it?
03:04You'll find it right here in this little pamphlet.
03:06The truth about Negroes and foreigners.
03:09The truth about the Catholic Church.
03:11Do you believe in that kind of talk?
03:14I don't know, makes pretty good sense to me.
03:16And I tell you, friends, we'll never be able to call this country our own until it's a country without.
03:24Without what?
03:26Yeah, without what?
03:27Without Negroes.
03:29Without alien foreigners.
03:31Without Catholics.
03:33Without Freemasons.
03:36What's wrong with the Masons?
03:37I'm a Mason.
03:39Hey, that fellow's talking about me.
03:42And that makes a difference, doesn't it?
03:45These are your enemies.
03:47These are the people who are trying to take over our country.
03:50Now you know them.
03:51You know what they stand for.
03:53And it's up to you and me to fight them.
03:55Fight them and destroy them before they destroy us.
04:05Before he said Masons, you were ready to agree with him.
04:09Well, yes, but he was talking about, what about those other people?
04:14But in this country, we have no other people.
04:17We are American people.
04:20What about you?
04:21You aren't American, right?
04:22I was born in Hungary, but now I am an American citizen.
04:26And I have seen what this kind of talk can do.
04:29I saw it in Berlin.
04:30What were you doing there?
04:32I was a professor at the university.
04:34I heard the same words we have heard today.
04:37But I was a fool then.
04:39I thought Nazis were crazy people, stupid fanatics.
04:43But unfortunately, it was not so.
04:46You see, they knew that they were not strong enough to conquer a unified country.
04:51So they split Germany into small groups.
04:53They used prejudice as a practical weapon to cripple the nation.
04:58Of course, that was not easy to do.
05:00They had to work hard to do it.
05:03You see, we human beings are not born with prejudices.
05:08Always they are made for us.
05:10Made by someone who wants something.
05:12Remember that when you hear this kind of talk,
05:15somebody is going to get something out of it.
05:17And it isn't going to be you.
05:21This is not classroom theory.
05:24I saw it happen.
05:27I saw it first in Berlin in 1932.
05:31Five young men that I knew were standing in the crowd listening to the Nazi speaker.
05:36Eric was a Catholic.
05:40Anton, a student of mine, was a Jew.
05:43Heinrich owned a small hardware store.
05:47Karl was a farmer.
05:49And Hans was an unemployed metal worker.
05:52To all Boerian Germans,
05:55I say it is time you inherited the nation which rightfully belongs to you.
05:59To you alone belongs the glorious destiny of the greater Germany.
06:04The Nazi party will provide land for the farmer,
06:07work for the worker,
06:08and profits for the small businessmen.
06:11Who is getting these things now?
06:13The Jew.
06:16The Jew who has stolen our nation and our birthright.
06:20Who makes all the money and takes all our jobs.
06:23The Jew.
06:24He must be shunned.
06:26He must be ostracized.
06:28He must be eliminated.
06:31And the Catholics.
06:32We don't want our great nation run by a foreign church.
06:36We Germans will know what to do with these people when the time comes.
06:40They and their faith must be destroyed.
06:43Then there are the Freemasons.
06:46In Germany we have no place for secret societies.
06:49There will be only one society.
06:51And that is the Nazi party.
06:53There will be no secrecy about that in the new greater Germany.
06:57One by one he attacked each minority
07:00and he split them off one from the other.
07:03These men were all fellow Germans when they came here today.
07:07Now they were split into rival groups.
07:09Suspicious of each other.
07:11Hating each other.
07:13They were being swindled.
07:15All of them.
07:17But the man who was really being fooled was Hunts.
07:21He was pure German according to Nazi standards.
07:25To him they promised everything.
07:28And he fell for it.
07:31That's how Hunts became a superman.
07:34They gave him a uniform and they pumped up his ego.
07:37He wasn't just a little fellow out of work anymore.
07:40He was a member of the master race.
07:44Hunts and thousands of others like him.
07:47All playing a soccer's game.
07:50They gambled with other people's liberty.
07:52And of course they lost their own.
07:54A nation of soccerers.
07:57Hitler needed these people.
07:59There was lots of work to be done.
08:02There were trade unions to be smashed.
08:05Because unions were organized and might offer resistance.
08:09There were many political parties in Germany.
08:12These the Nazis destroyed.
08:14They were determined to smash every organization where people might band together and resist them.
08:20There were Jews to be beaten and killed.
08:23The Jews were not powerful but they were a convenient excuse for all the nation's ills.
08:28And besides, a Nazi party member could not take over this man's toll.
08:34Hundreds of Catholics were put in jail.
08:37Because the Catholic Church had strength and could resist the Nazi drive for power.
08:42They had split the nation into a hundred pieces and then one by one they had destroyed the pieces.
08:50Over these broken pieces the Nazis rode into power.
08:55One party, one nation, one religion.
09:01These men had won their struggle for power.
09:05They now ruled all of Germany.
09:07But still they had trouble with their oldest and most persistent enemy, the truth.
09:12They found that truth does not die easily and so they decided to abolish truth.
09:19One great source of truth is literature so they burned books, 20 million of them.
09:26Many great men in Germany who were spokesmen for truth were jailed or driven from their country.
09:32Teachers, writers, scientists.
09:35Education was discouraged.
09:37In five years, college attendance dropped 53%.
09:43It was forbidden to listen to a British radio program or read an American newspaper.
09:49In Nazi Germany, you had to get your information from Dr. Goebbels.
09:54He knew what was best for you.
09:56The church was one forcing Germany still strong enough to proclaim the truth in public.
10:02This Catholic priest was arrested the following day on charges of immorality.
10:09The Protestant church also continued to try and fight for truth.
10:13The Nazis put this man in a concentration camp.
10:17There were others who spoke for truth and I am proud to say that educators were among them.
10:23And what, may I ask, is an Arian?
10:27I don't know my son.
10:30But let us see what our present so-called authorities have to say about him.
10:36They say he is tall.
10:45Slender.
10:51Blue-eyed.
10:55Blue-eyed and blonde.
11:00There is no Aryan race.
11:03And more important, there is no master race.
11:08There are people who may find these ideas convenient, but science cannot support them.
11:17There is no scientific proof that there is any correlation between a man's racial characteristics
11:26and his native ability or character.
11:29In all racial groups, we find the same range of potentialities.
11:36We find idiots and geniuses.
11:39We find criminals and philanthropists.
11:43We must judge each man as an individual.
11:49And not by the color of his skin or his eyes.
11:53Or by the length of his nose.
12:03We must judge each man as an individual.
12:04Come in, gentlemen.
12:05It's comfortable.
12:09And remember that there is no master race.
12:13That is a scientific truth.
12:16Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.
12:27And so for all practical purposes, truth had been abolished in Germany.
12:33A lot of my German friends wondered what had hit them.
12:37How did it happen?
12:38Where did it start?
12:41It started right here.
12:43And this was where it could have been stopped.
12:46If those people had stood together, if they had protected each other,
12:50they could have resisted the Nazi threat.
12:53Together they would have been strong.
12:55But once they allowed themselves to be split apart, they were helpless.
12:59When that first minority lost out, everybody lost out.
13:04They made the mistake of gambling with other people's freedom.
13:08Now let's see how those bets paid off.
13:11Karl the farmer was gambling on a better life for himself.
13:15What he got was extra hours of back-breaking work, as much as a hundred hours a week.
13:21He was forced to stay on his land and produce what he was told to produce.
13:25Because now Hitler was preparing for war.
13:28For Heinrich, who owned a hardware store, the bet didn't pay off either.
13:34104,000 small businesses were closed in two years.
13:39And for Hans, conditions hadn't improved any.
13:43He had a job now, in the munitions factory.
13:46But he worked long hours for little pay.
13:50The working conditions grew increasingly bad.
13:54And even though he didn't like the job, he wasn't permitted to leave it.
13:58And when Hitler decided the time was right, Germany went to war.
14:03Not by declaring war, but by a carefully prepared sneak attack.
14:10Once again, Hitler needed Hans to do his dirty work.
14:15Hans was an expert at brutality by this time.
14:18And Hitler had decided to use Hans and his brutality against other peoples.
14:23The Czechs, the Poles, the French, the Russians.
14:27But in the crucial test of war, Hitler's race theories didn't pay off.
14:33His pure-blooded supermen were defeated by the mongrel armies he despised.
14:39By the British of El Alamein.
14:51By the Russians at Stalingrad.
14:58Then on D-Day, by American soldiers of every color and religion.
15:03Who smashed across the Normandy beaches and drove on through to the heart of Germany.
15:09For the misguided Germans who had swallowed the Nazi bait, the Nazi game did not pay off.
15:16The continent of Europe was strewn with millions of German bodies.
15:20Pure Aryan bodies.
15:24Karl, the farmer, was left in the snow outside of Moscow.
15:28Heinrich stayed in Italy at Salerno.
15:32And Hans, who was going to rule the world, got only a little patch of Normandy that he could call
15:39his own.
15:41We must never let that happen to us or to our country.
15:45We must never let ourselves be divided by race or color or religion.
15:49Because in this country we all belong to minority groups.
15:52I was born in Hungary, you are a Mason, these are minorities, and then you belong to other minority groups
15:58too.
15:59You are a farmer, you have blues, you go to the Methodist church.
16:03Your right to belong to these minorities is a precious thing.
16:07You have a right to be what you are and say what you think because here we have personal freedom.
16:13We have liberty.
16:14And these are not just fancy words.
16:16This is a practical and priceless way of living.
16:19But we must work at it.
16:21We must guard everyone's liberty or we can lose our own.
16:25If we allow any minority to lose its freedom by persecution or by prejudice, we are threatening our own freedom.
16:33And this is not simply an idea.
16:36This is good, hard, common sense.
16:39You see, here in America is not a question whether we tolerate minorities.
16:45America is minorities.
16:47And that means you and me.
16:55So let's not be suckers.
16:58We must not allow the freedom or dignity of any men to be threatened by any act or word.
17:05Let's be selfish about it.
17:08Let's forget about we and they.
17:11Let's think about us.
17:25Let's think about us.
17:27Let's think about us.
17:27Let's think about us.
17:28Let's think about us.
17:28Let's think about us.
17:28Let's think about us.
17:28Let's think about us.
17:28Let's think about us.
