00:00Lisa Cook is the Fed governor that Trump posted on social media he is firing, which is a classic example in Trump's increasingly autocratic efforts to see what he can get away with.
00:13A, that's not a legal way to typically fire someone, but B, and more importantly, the Fed official of a Trump cabinet or people who he picks that way.
00:25He does nominate them, their Senate confirmed, but then unlike, say, the cabinet, we know since the beginning of the Fed, no president has ever removed a Fed official for no reason.
00:35And Ms. Cook is punching back, filing a lawsuit against Trump over this unprecedented and illegal removal, as her lawyers put it.
00:43And this could be a landmark legal battle because the Federal Reserve is not just some other little part of the government as far as Trump or Musk is concerned, as they've tested going after parts of the government.
00:55That whether it's good policy or not, judges said, yep, well, you can fire certain employees.
01:00This is different.
01:01The Federal Reserve was always insulated from exactly this kind of partisan pressure to protect its independence in the American economy.
01:08And even if it sounds like a kind of obtuse thing and you don't wake up thinking about the Federal Reserve every day, most people don't, that's a good thing.
01:17Because most days in most parties' administrations, there haven't been these kind of efforts to turn it partisan.
01:24That is a backdrop for the increasing concern and pushback around the country.
01:28California Governor Gavin Newsom has become one of the loudest Democratic voices in saying you can't just wait around and criticize.
01:35You have to fight fire with fire.
01:36And he is talking directly about something that used to be considered sort of a more fringe concern or is it really going to happen?
01:44Well, he says it's happened here and Trump wants it to happen again, how he will cling to power.
01:50He will send the National Guard, he will send them all across this country, and he will do so through Election Day.
02:00And he'll do so working in concert, as he has with ICE and Border Patrol, to do the same.
02:09You have the largest private police force in the world.
02:13If people actually think this guy's serious about having another election,
02:18you think he's joking about 2028?
02:22Wake up.
02:24You will lose your country.
02:27A stark warning from a governor who has used his powers, both going to court and fighting with Trump,
02:33and also said he's going to continue to break decorum or anything else he has to,
02:37in recounting, for example, what are typically private discussions in the White House between him and the president,
02:42who he said was very exercised about continuing to abuse power.
02:46Now, for all the talk about, well, Trump did win the election and all the reasons that Democrats may have lost by a point and a half,
02:53this is an ongoing story, not just one snap review of where the country was in November.
03:01And the Democrats made their mistakes.
03:03I think that's been well established under the Biden era, and they had to swap out the candidate.
03:06But even after losing by a point and a half, the country, the nation, is watching this.
03:11And I want to remind you, with everything that Trump has done in this first year, where he stands,
03:16an approval rating that is now the lowest of his second term,
03:20one of the lowest of modern presidencies,
03:22sinking in this late August period of Trump clashes to just 37%.
03:26There's also a public health crisis unfolding and turmoil at the CDC,
03:31where the Trump administration, not through Trump directly initially,
03:34but through basically an intermediary, said they were going to oust their chosen CDC director
03:39because of a clash with RFK over vaccines.
03:42Now, she, like the board governor, is saying there are still rules and laws here,
03:47even if Trump wished otherwise.
03:48And because this was done through an unusual intermediary,
03:52she argues and states that is just not lawful.
03:54She does serve at the pleasure of the president, different than the Fed,
03:57but she says she's not going anywhere until the president steps in and says what he means.
04:02Four other top officials are resigning in what looks like a very clear protest
04:06of how the Trump administration has dealt with both the science of this and the process.
04:11Now, one of the doctors wrote a letter on the way out,
04:13accusing Trump officials of pushing policies and materials that do not reflect scientific reality
04:18and are designed to hurt rather than improve the public's health.
04:23Also stating that RFK Jr. has been intentionally eroding trust in those,
04:28what she calls, quote, low-risk vaccines,
04:31and noting Trump officials' desire to please a political base will result
04:35in death and disability of vulnerable children and adults.
04:39CDC workers also held a rally outside the headquarters,
04:42along with some allies, in defense of what they view
04:45as a kind of rolling attack on both the science and the leadership of that organization.
04:51Now, RFK clearly has a blank check from Trump,
04:55so what he does is not just an RFK problem.
04:58The buck stops at the president.
04:59And as we showed you, voters seem to realize that turning
05:02against this administration in this early period.
05:05He's also saying he's found interventions that he says may cause autism.
05:09We'll have announcements, as promised, in September.
05:15We're finding interventions, certain interventions now,
05:20that are clearly, almost certainly causing autism.
05:25And we're going to be able to address those in September.
05:29RFK using that televised meeting there to obviously try to give a boost to this.
05:34Listen to what he says he can do about diagnosing children himself.
05:38I'm looking at kids as I walk through the airports today,
05:43as I walk down the street,
05:45and I see these kids that are just overburdened
05:49with mitochondrial challenges, with inflammation.
05:53You can tell from their faces, from their body movements.
05:56I know that that's not how our children are supposed to look.
06:01He can tell from their faces, from their body movements, he says.
06:05Very few doctors consider that any kind of diagnostic.
06:09But this is the state we're in.
06:12This is the leadership team that Donald Trump has selected.
06:15And this is, even as I've mentioned, a late summer period
06:18where people may not catch every little bit of news,
06:21but the news they are keeping up with,
06:23whether they get it through traditional media sources
06:25or an alert on their phones or even social media,
06:28which we've cautioned sometimes has a lot of false information,
06:31but whatever general picture people are getting,
06:34it is leading to this historically low approval for the president,
06:38a disapproval on policy, on substance,
06:41and clearly, as the No Kings protests also showed,
06:44a concern about whether Gavin Newsom and others are right,
06:47whether we are living through the slow-building boil
06:50of a plan to end democracy in this country.
06:53And for all the hyperbolic exchanges,
06:55which do happen, by the way, from politicians sometimes in both corners,
07:00Donald Trump has basically spent the bulk of this first year of the term
07:05proving his critics right,
07:08showing that the autocratic warnings were not overstatement.
07:11Many of the things he's doing now
07:13sound like Democratic campaign ads from last year.
07:16He'll put Marines in the streets.
07:17He'll put troops in the streets.
07:19He'll undercut science.
07:20He'll put conspiracy theorists in charge of your children's health.
07:23Reverend Al Sharpton is here.
07:24We want to show him marching on Wall Street,
07:26protesting Donald Trump.
07:27The leadership, the pressure intervention
07:30in the economic leadership of the country
07:32and this ongoing clash over diversity in hiring.
07:37Rev, you've cautioned against that.
07:40We see you out in the streets,
07:41which both shows what you're doing
07:43and also full disclosure of where you stand
07:45on some of those debates with the president.
07:46But we've now seen Wall Street leaders
07:49who may have said,
07:50oh, fine, push back on DEI or BLM.
07:54Oh, fine, okay, he wants to have a little more say about things.
07:57And now this week they're seeing
07:59he wants to go after central banking.
08:00He wants to control the economy
08:01in what some call a warped view of maggot socialism.
08:05Other people call it extortion.
08:08What were you saying today?
08:09And do you think anyone on Wall Street is waking up?
08:11I think that we are saying exactly that.
08:15And that is that when it was DEI and just diversity,
08:20which implies minorities and women,
08:24Wall Street looked the other way.
08:26When they now see that he's taken 10% in intel,
08:31I mean, this is supposed to be the conservatives
08:33that don't believe in government interference.
08:36He's going in dealing with taking over policing
08:40in Washington, threatening to do it in Chicago
08:44and other places.
08:45What happened to the state's rights philosophy
08:47of the conservatives
08:48where national government doesn't come in?
08:50So they're beginning to see a different threat to themselves.
08:55And that's why the march today was important.
08:57Thousands of people, more than I thought would come,
09:00march down,
09:01because not only are we not getting the jobs
09:04and are eliminating jobs,
09:06they're eliminating business contracts
09:08to blacks and women and Latinos.
09:10They're eliminating C-suites.
09:13And the people on Wall Street
09:14needed to see bodies in their lunch hour like that
09:17that'll say,
09:19we will buy a few shares of stock
09:21and come to your stockholders meetings
09:22with thousands of people.
09:24We're going to have this argument.
09:25And I think Donald Trump,
09:27having known and fought with him
09:29and was friendly with him
09:31and fought with him again
09:32for the last 40 years,
09:33he only respects people
09:36that will stand up to him.
09:37He does not respect people
09:39that cows to him.
09:41Yeah, and we're seeing that sort of diversion
09:44in the country.
09:47A lot of people are standing up.
09:49There's a lot of opposition.
09:50I showed the polling.
09:52Governor Newsom says
09:53you've got to take him seriously
09:54and fight it now.
09:54It's too late
09:55if you expect people to catch up with it later.
09:57And he's pointing to both Trump
10:00musing about a third term,
10:01musing about being a dictator.
10:02Steve Bannon,
10:03who's on the outs,
10:04who's not running things the way he used to,
10:06but it often is the kind of trial balloon
10:08for these things.
10:09Take a listen to Bannon.
10:10The lead story over in Semaphore.
10:14Wait for it.
10:16Republican voters now 53-47
10:18support President Trump running for a third term.
10:22I kid you not.
10:23Told you this day was coming.
10:24Do you think Trump is serious about this
10:29and Newsom is right to say
10:31you've got to get this out there
10:32and fight it now?
10:33I think that he is serious,
10:37as serious as he is about anything else,
10:39but he becomes increasingly serious
10:41when there's no pushback
10:42and when people like Bannon,
10:45whether he's inside or outside the tent,
10:47makes stuff popular.
10:49Trump is a person
10:50that goes with whatever serves
10:53his ego and purposes at the time.
10:56He's not a deep thinker.
10:57He doesn't think in 2025, about 28.
11:01But if it sounds right
11:03and he can build up and give up a momentum,
11:05yes, he will do it.
11:07And look at what he's doing.
11:08He has, I mean,
11:09to be taking over cities
11:10to say you want to remove
11:12a governor from the Federal Reserve
11:15on an accusation.
11:17We don't know that
11:17there's going to be an indictment.
11:19We don't know there's going
11:20to be a prosecution.
11:22We don't know if there's going
11:23to be a conviction.
11:24He wants to fire her
11:25based on an accusation.
11:27And he is a man
11:28with 34 felony convictions
11:31and was found guilty of fraud
11:33with how he did business.
11:35And no one's hitting back
11:36saying, wait a minute,
11:37you're the last person
11:39that ought to be talking
11:40about an accusation.
11:41You're a convict.
11:42The only one that ever sat
11:43in the Oval Office.
11:46What do you think Trump returns to here
11:48as we come back next week?
11:50Congress comes back into session.
11:52The Epstein issue
11:53is not something
11:54they've been able
11:54to completely suppress.
11:56And whether Trump cares or not,
11:58the Republican Party
11:59can see polling
12:00when you get down to,
12:02you're dropping towards
12:03what could be
12:03a third of the country.
12:05That's not where
12:06a party wants to be
12:07going into
12:08what is a midterm year.
12:09I think that Trump
12:10will face
12:11people bringing back up
12:13the fact
12:14that we've not seen
12:15the entire Epstein matter.
12:18We have not seen
12:19an explanation
12:20on why Maxwell
12:21was moved
12:21to a minimum security
12:24federal facility.
12:26And we've not seen
12:28a lot of transparency there.
12:29So Epstein is not dead.
12:31And I think
12:32when they're going to look
12:33at these whole takeovers
12:35that he's trying to do
12:36with the National Guard
12:37who are not trained
12:38to fight crime,
12:39who don't bear arms
12:40unless they're special,
12:42I think he's going to face
12:43a more divided Congress,
12:45even in some Republicans,
12:47than he faced
12:48on his way in.
12:51Reverend Al Sharpton,
12:52thank you.
12:52I'll tell folks,
12:53reminder,
12:54Politics Nation airs
12:55weekends 5 p.m. Eastern,
12:57where you can catch
12:57The Rev this weekend
12:58on these issues.
12:59Still ahead,
13:00we'll show you
13:01some of these outraged
13:02voters in Republican districts
13:03and Trump clashing
13:05with Democratic governors.
13:06Well, more Democratic governors
13:08are taking the page
13:09out of California
13:10or some of these states
13:10and fighting back hard.
13:12That includes
13:12Progressive Governor
13:13Bob Ferguson
13:14of Washington State,
13:15who is our special guest
13:16live, next.
13:20The Trump administration
13:22continues to ramp up
13:23these deportation efforts
13:24and in contrast
13:26to what was claimed
13:27as the primary reason
13:28during the campaign,
13:29there's no evidence here
13:30that they're prioritizing
13:31the dangerous criminals.
13:32You can see ICE
13:33detaining active firefighters
13:35here who were actually
13:36involved in working
13:37to contain a wildfire
13:39in Washington State.
13:40And if you remember
13:41what happened in California,
13:42these percentages
13:43are scary.
13:44That fire is only
13:4413, 1-3% contained.
13:48And yet,
13:49these federal officials
13:50basically stopped
13:52two of the men
13:52from working
13:53towards that
13:54public safety goal.
13:56Some of their colleagues
13:57sharing video
13:57of that raid online.
14:00This is what they do, guys.
14:01This is what they do.
14:03This is their job.
14:05They're trying to take
14:10our f***ing scene
14:11away from us right here.
14:14There are, of course,
14:15all kinds of individuals
14:17who may not have
14:18proper or current legal status
14:20in all 50 states
14:21that do work.
14:22In fact, we have
14:22an economy that continues
14:24to use a lot of this
14:25type of labor.
14:26And labor that's involved
14:27in the public safety effort
14:28is generally
14:28far, far more important
14:30to allow to continue
14:32during the workday,
14:33at least,
14:34than, say,
14:34other random work.
14:36But this isn't being enforced
14:37with an eye on public safety
14:38or even equally
14:39across all 50 states.
14:41I can't show you
14:41something like this
14:42happening tonight
14:43in deep red states.
14:44It's happening,
14:45as the president admitted,
14:47as part of a political vendetta,
14:49using these powers
14:50against blue states
14:51as a type of retribution
14:52while sparing red states
14:53to continue a kind
14:54of autocratic messaging
14:56that, hey,
14:56if you were in the right place
14:58on the right team,
14:59maybe it won't happen to you.
15:01Democratic governors
15:01are pushing back.
15:03Some have become
15:03a key check
15:04on using the constitutional
15:05powers of federalism
15:07to deal with Trump overreach.
15:09California's Gavin Newsom,
15:10Westmore in Maryland,
15:11J.B. Pritzker in Illinois,
15:12and others.
15:14In Washington state,
15:14Governor Ferguson
15:15hit back at the attorney general
15:17for threatening
15:18that state
15:20over its chosen
15:21immigration policies.
15:24Washington state
15:25will not be bullied
15:27or intimidated
15:28by threats
15:29and legally baseless
15:31accusations.
15:32Pam Bondi seems
15:33to think
15:34and seeks
15:34to have
15:35Washington state
15:35bend the knee
15:36to a Trump administration
15:38that day by day
15:39drags us closer
15:40to authoritarianism.
15:42That's not going
15:43to happen either.
15:44I am not intimidated
15:45by Pam Bondi
15:46or the president.
15:50That Governor,
15:51Bob Ferguson,
15:51joins us on the beat
15:52tonight.
15:53Welcome.
15:55Thanks so much
15:56for having me.
15:56Really appreciate it.
15:57What do you view
15:59as the goal
16:02or purpose
16:03of that operation
16:04against the firefighters
16:05in your state
16:06and what's your response?
16:08Look, Ari,
16:09I think you nailed it
16:10at the outset
16:11when you said,
16:12look,
16:12Trump ran on this campaign
16:14of sending out
16:16of the country
16:16the worst of the worst.
16:17I'm not sure
16:18who's more
16:19the best of the best
16:20than someone
16:20who's working on a fire
16:21in a remote part
16:23of Washington state,
16:24our largest firefighter
16:25and literally
16:26arresting them
16:28as they're doing
16:29that work
16:30as they come
16:30off the line.
16:31It's truly breathtaking
16:32but just shows
16:33the degree
16:34and the depths
16:35to which this
16:35administration will go
16:36in trying to enforce
16:38these very cruel
16:39immigration policies.
16:42Is there something
16:43you can do about it?
16:45Well, obviously,
16:47you know,
16:47the federal government
16:47has a lot of authority
16:48when it comes to enforcing
16:49federal immigration laws.
16:51You know,
16:51Washington state,
16:52as you mentioned
16:52at the outset,
16:53we have a policy
16:54that precludes
16:56our local law enforcement
16:57from cooperating
16:58with raids at businesses
17:00or immigration enforcement
17:02like this.
17:03We don't engage in that.
17:05But there is a limitation
17:06for all states
17:07when it comes to
17:08trying to stop,
17:09even if they're stopping
17:10firefighters
17:11in a remote part
17:12of Washington state
17:13who are simply trying
17:14to keep our state safe.
17:15There are certainly
17:16limitations to that.
17:18The board of czar,
17:19as they call them,
17:20Tom Holman,
17:20has talked about this,
17:22sanctuary city policy,
17:23which you just mentioned.
17:24We've had him
17:25on this program as well.
17:26Take a listen
17:26to what he says.
17:29Operations are rampant
17:30across the country,
17:31but you can see
17:32a ramp-up of operations
17:33in Chicago,
17:33absolutely.
17:34You're going to see
17:34a ramp-up of operations
17:35in New York.
17:36You're going to see
17:36a ramp-up of operations
17:37continue in L.A.
17:39And, you know,
17:40Portland, Seattle.
17:41I mean,
17:41all these sanctuary cities
17:43that refuse to work
17:44with ICE.
17:44Fact-check, true.
17:49As you just referred,
17:50there is a real policy
17:51clash here,
17:52and he's referencing
17:53that because of the
17:55difference over the
17:55enforcement priorities,
17:56et cetera,
17:57many of these so-called
17:58sanctuary cities
17:58don't work with ICE.
18:00What do you say
18:00to the Trump administration
18:02argument that if you
18:05and other cities
18:06worked with them more,
18:07they wouldn't have to
18:08come in like this?
18:10I mean, you know,
18:12give me a break
18:12is what I would say to that.
18:13Look, our job as
18:15my job as a governor
18:16is to make sure
18:17our limited law
18:18enforcement resources
18:19that we have
18:20go to making sure
18:22our community is safe
18:23and local law enforcement.
18:24It's not our job
18:25to do the job
18:26of the federal government
18:27when it comes to
18:28enforcing federal law
18:29and federal immigration laws.
18:30And certainly,
18:32given the character
18:33of the cruel way
18:34in which this administration
18:35is conducting these raids,
18:37conducting,
18:38showing up at a
18:39remote location.
18:40I've been mountain
18:40climbing out there,
18:41Ari,
18:41I've been backpacking.
18:42This is a remote part
18:43of our state
18:44to go pick up
18:45two firefighters
18:46who are out there
18:47fighting the largest fire
18:48in Washington state
18:49in the hot weather.
18:51Look, it's breathtaking
18:52that this is what
18:52it's come to.
18:53So, you know,
18:54our job is to focus
18:55on what we can do,
18:56make sure we're doing
18:57everything we can
18:57to protect Washingtonians,
18:59enforce our law
19:00that we call
19:00the Keep Washington
19:01Working Act,
19:02which, by the way,
19:02Ari, I'll mention
19:03when it passed in 2019,
19:05passed in a bipartisan fashion
19:06in the Washington state legislature.
19:09This is a bipartisan law
19:10because it makes sense.
19:11It's good for public safety
19:12and leaves us out of,
19:14you know,
19:14this business of what
19:15the federal government
19:16is doing when it comes
19:17to enforcing their
19:18immigration policies
19:18and just such a,
19:20you know,
19:21masked agents
19:21jumping out of unmarked cars,
19:23plucking people off the streets,
19:25picking up firefighters
19:25in remote locations.
19:27It's all,
19:27to me as an American,
19:28something I would never,
19:29thought I would never see
19:30as a U.S. citizen.
19:32The president talks openly
19:35and repeatedly
19:36about staying in power
19:37past 28
19:37or why dictators,
19:40he says,
19:40bring benefits.
19:41Take a look.
19:43They say,
19:44we don't need him.
19:45Freedom, freedom.
19:45He's a dictator.
19:46He's a dictator.
19:47A lot of people are saying
19:48maybe we like a dictator.
19:50So the line is
19:51that I'm a dictator
19:52when I stop crying.
19:54So a lot of people say,
19:55you know,
19:55if that's the case,
19:56I'd rather have a dictator.
19:57Do you take it seriously?
20:01How would you fight that?
20:03Would you oppose any effort
20:04by him to try to get on,
20:07say, your state's ballot again
20:09for an illegal third term?
20:11Hell yeah.
20:12Heck yes,
20:13I take that seriously, Ari.
20:14Absolutely.
20:15Anyone who does not take him
20:17at his word
20:18when he speaks
20:19is a fool
20:20and has their head in the sand
20:21full stop.
20:22So absolutely,
20:23I take that seriously.
20:25And look,
20:25we have some experience
20:27in dealing with this guy
20:28in his first administration.
20:29I was proud that
20:30I was the first attorney general
20:31to challenge him in court
20:32and the first to beat him in court.
20:34We beat him in court
20:3555 more times
20:36with other attorneys general
20:37across the country.
20:38So look,
20:39we'll have our battles
20:39in the court
20:40and the battle of public opinion.
20:41But every viewer
20:42watching this show,
20:43we all have agency
20:44in what's going on.
20:45We all need to be out
20:46in the streets
20:47in peaceful protest.
20:48We need to be out there
20:49and be active.
20:50Whatever your station in life is,
20:51whatever your role is,
20:52we all have agency
20:54in what's going on
20:54and we all need to buckle up
20:56and prepare
20:56for the absolute worst.
20:58To do anything,
20:59eat less,
20:59is not doing our duties
21:01as Americans
21:01to defend our democracy.
21:05Fresh outrage
21:06over President Trump's
21:07use of the National Guard here.
21:09He says he will also consider
21:10deploying Guard troops
21:12to other cities
21:13and admitting he views this
21:14as a partisan project,
21:16that he will go
21:17to Democrat-run cities.
21:18He has mentioned Baltimore.
21:20Joining us now
21:20is Maryland Governor Wes Moore.
21:23Thanks for being here.
21:24Thanks for being here.
21:27Thank you so much for having me.
21:28Great to have you.
21:28Let's start with
21:30what's happening here.
21:31Washington,
21:32obviously very close
21:32to where you govern
21:33and the idea that,
21:35as the president says,
21:35he would do this
21:36on a partisan basis.
21:37What's your response?
21:39You know,
21:39when I think about
21:40the president's comments
21:41that he literally made
21:42from the Oval Office yesterday
21:43where he was talking about
21:45how this is a good
21:45political issue
21:46for them to use
21:48and utilize
21:49when it comes
21:49to the midterm elections,
21:51one thing that is,
21:53and again,
21:53as we hear it,
21:54for all of us
21:55who had to live and exist
21:56in these communities
21:57that have been
21:58chronically neglected,
21:59who have had to live
22:00and exist
22:01and grow up in communities
22:02where we knew
22:03that our safety
22:04was not a concern
22:05for people
22:06in very high perches
22:08and people
22:08who were in power,
22:09for people who knew
22:10they spoke about us
22:12and never having
22:13conversations with us,
22:14that unfortunately,
22:16the comments
22:16of the president
22:17of the United States
22:18just validates
22:19what so many of us felt
22:21as we were coming up
22:22inside of those communities,
22:24that there actually
22:25is not a concern
22:26about our safety,
22:27that this is just a game.
22:29And it rings
22:31incredibly,
22:32incredibly frustrating
22:33for those of us
22:34who actually are serious
22:35about this work.
22:37When I first came on board,
22:38you know,
22:39I remember the year
22:39before I became
22:40the governor in 2022,
22:42Baltimore City
22:43was averaging
22:44almost a homicide a day
22:45that for the eight years
22:47under my predecessor,
22:48we saw the homicide rate
22:49nearly double,
22:50the non-fatal shooting rate
22:51did double,
22:52and we came in
22:53with a completely new philosophy
22:55about the way
22:55we're going to address
22:57violence and public safety
22:58in our community,
22:59that we're going to work
23:00with local elected officials
23:01like the mayor
23:02and the state's attorney,
23:03and we made historic investments
23:05in local law enforcement,
23:06historic investments
23:07in technology,
23:08historic investments
23:09in the community,
23:10and has produced
23:12not just encouraging results,
23:13but historic drops
23:15in violent crime
23:16in Baltimore City.
23:17It's because we actually
23:18take the work seriously,
23:19and we're not seeing that
23:20from the White House
23:20right now.
23:22Understood,
23:22and that goes to how
23:23you're approaching it locally
23:24within your authorities.
23:25When you look at
23:26what the president
23:27is suggesting,
23:28we have the list
23:29of many of the cities,
23:31it's hard not to notice
23:33how many are led by
23:35black American leaders.
23:37Do you view this,
23:39and do you think
23:39there's enough evidence
23:40to suggest
23:41that this is part
23:42of the targeting
23:42and sort of a race-baiting
23:43fight that he wants?
23:45Well, I think
23:48we are watching
23:49consistent trends
23:50that we have seen,
23:51so it kind of tracks
23:52with the president
23:54of the United States,
23:55and it's the reason
23:55why I actually invited him,
23:57and I said,
23:58come to Baltimore,
23:59because, you know,
24:00especially when
24:01ignorant comments are made,
24:02the only way
24:03to address ignorance
24:04is education.
24:05So come and learn.
24:06Come and spend time
24:07in our communities.
24:08Come and spend time
24:09with community violence
24:10intervention groups
24:11like We Are Us,
24:12who are actually
24:13on the ground
24:13doing the work.
24:13Come and spend time
24:14with our local law enforcement
24:16who are on the beat.
24:17Come and spend time
24:18with the mayor
24:18and the state's attorney,
24:19and come see what we see
24:20as we walk our communities
24:22every single day.
24:23And, of course,
24:24the response
24:25that I received
24:26from the president
24:26of the United States
24:27with his laughing crowd
24:31around him
24:31was just simply
24:32making a snide
24:33personal comment
24:34about me.
24:35And so it does
24:37become very frustrating
24:38when we actually
24:39know what can work.
24:41We know that instead
24:42of doing things
24:42like cutting $30 million
24:44of gun violence prevention
24:46like the president
24:47has just done
24:47for the state of Maryland,
24:49that we know
24:50if he could do things
24:50like invest in
24:51license plate readers
24:52and actually pass
24:53federal legislation
24:54that bans ghost guns,
24:55things we have been
24:56calling for,
24:57but they have just
24:57scoffed off
24:58because they said
24:58bring in the National Guard
25:00to pick up litter
25:03is somehow a better strategy
25:04to fight crime
25:05inside of our society.
25:06We know that there
25:07is a better way,
25:08and we know that
25:09if we actually had
25:10a partner inside
25:10of Washington,
25:11we could demonstrate
25:12what a better way
25:13looks like to continue
25:14producing the kind of results
25:15that the people
25:16in our communities
25:16hope for.
25:17You mentioned
25:18sort of his personal approach
25:20and he's been on
25:21both sides of it
25:22kind of attacking you
25:23but then also
25:24invoking your support,
25:26which I guess it means
25:26if you did think
25:28highly of him,
25:29that would be a positive.
25:30That's usually, right,
25:31why people invoke
25:32certain support.
25:33And again,
25:34some viewers may have
25:35heard about this.
25:35I got you on,
25:36so I'm going to ask.
25:36You have the headline,
25:38Trump falsely claims
25:39Governor Moore
25:40called him the greatest
25:41president in terms
25:42of how lies work.
25:43It sounds like more
25:44of the way he talks
25:45than the way you talk.
25:47But I guess my question
25:48is to have you
25:48on record here.
25:49Was he lying?
25:50And what does it tell you
25:51that he would want people
25:52to think that you like him?
25:56Yeah, we'll have
25:58breaking news
25:59on the show today.
26:00The president's lying.
26:02Okay.
26:03And I know that's shocking
26:04for a lot of voters
26:04to hear that.
26:06But actually what happened
26:07was when he first came up,
26:08the very first words
26:09out of his mouth was,
26:10he told me that I was
26:11a really good looking guy
26:12and I was really good
26:13looking in person too.
26:14And then he proceeded
26:16to say that my people
26:17are telling me
26:17that you're doing
26:18fantastic work.
26:20And he said,
26:20how can I help?
26:21And I started talking
26:22about the bridge
26:23that I told him
26:24how a year and a half ago,
26:26how we had one of the
26:27most tragic moments
26:28in our state's history.
26:29And we've been able
26:30to really give a case study
26:32on how to respond
26:33in these moments of crisis
26:33to move with speed
26:35but also humanity.
26:36And I told him
26:38that we would really
26:39love his continued support.
26:42And it's ironic now
26:43that this is the week
26:45that he then decides
26:46that he wants
26:46to threaten us
26:47with taking away
26:49bridge financing
26:50despite the fact
26:50that he never gave it
26:51to us in the first place.
26:52Yeah, and we have
26:53that headline
26:54on the bridge financing.
26:54You know, Governor,
26:55it's funny.
26:56It's the way we live, right?
26:58That you're telling us
26:59that the president said
27:00to you you're good-looking
27:01in person.
27:04It's just such a funny way
27:06for politicians to relate.
27:07I'm reminded of Jay Rock.
27:08You ever listen to Jay Rock?
27:11Yes, of course.
27:13Who said,
27:13don't hit me when I'm working.
27:14She said,
27:15I look way better in person.
27:17And Trump giving you
27:18that energy.
27:18And we're not refereeing it.
27:21We're just reporting it.
27:22So that's part
27:23of your relationship.
27:24Broadening out.
27:24Well, it's kind of like
27:26Kendrick
27:28when I say to the president,
27:30you don't tell lies about me
27:31and I won't tell the truth
27:32about you.
27:33A on Not Like Us,
27:35which, talk about
27:36how it all comes together.
27:37That line was popularized
27:39by Adlai Stevenson,
27:41an old-school Democrat.
27:43So it's all full circle today.
27:44You know, I mentioned
27:45earlier in the program,
27:48I know you're not going to
27:49make any other news
27:51about politics.
27:52But it's no secret
27:53that Democrats are looking
27:54around.
27:55There's a view that
27:56maybe they want
27:57a strong governor figure
27:59who is standing up
28:00to this administration.
28:02And I don't think
28:02you're the only name,
28:04but it's no secret
28:05that you and Governor Newsom,
28:07maybe Pritzker,
28:08are some of the names
28:08we're seeing circulated.
28:10How do you take that?
28:11Can you answer this question
28:12without giving us
28:13the usual talking points?
28:14You know,
28:14you're honored,
28:15but busy and focused on work.
28:17People are hungry
28:17for leadership.
28:18Democrats see a lot
28:19of D.C. leaders
28:20who they don't think
28:21are fighting hard enough
28:22or inventive enough.
28:23So walk us through
28:24how you see all that,
28:25knowing all the caveats
28:26that, of course,
28:27you're busy with your day job.
28:30Well, no,
28:31what I say is,
28:33I mean,
28:33the people of my state,
28:35they need me now.
28:37And I'm locked in
28:38because these are not
28:40glancing blows
28:41that are coming
28:42to the state of Maryland.
28:43These are direct shots.
28:45When the president
28:45of the United States
28:46has now fired
28:47over 12,000 Marylanders
28:49who are federal workers,
28:51people who are doing things
28:52like making sure
28:52that our food is safe
28:53and making sure
28:54that our critical infrastructure
28:55is protected,
28:56when the president
28:56of the United States
28:57looks at historic floods
28:59taking place
28:59in western Maryland,
29:00and when we put in
29:01for federal disaster
29:02release support,
29:03which we qualified for,
29:05and we simply get a response
29:06from the White House
29:07saying support
29:08for Maryland
29:08is not warranted.
29:10When we get an FBI building
29:11that we worked for 10 years
29:13and across all quantitative levels
29:14to say should be going
29:15to the state of Maryland,
29:16and the president
29:17of the United States
29:17says the FBI building
29:19is not going to Maryland
29:20because it is a liberal state.
29:22Like, the president,
29:23like, we are being,
29:24we are being attacked
29:25by the federal government
29:26right now.
29:27And my people
29:28need to understand,
29:30and they know,
29:30that, listen,
29:31I don't come from
29:31the world of politics.
29:32I'm a soldier.
29:34And I'm standing my guard.
29:35And we are locked in
29:36to make sure
29:37that our people
29:38will continue to grow
29:39and thrive
29:40and succeed
29:40in this moment
29:42despite the fact
29:43that we're watching
29:44a federal government
29:45who seems to make
29:46my communities
29:46and our neighborhoods
29:48some kind of punchline
29:49instead of understanding
29:50that when you're talking
29:51about the people
29:51of Baltimore,
29:52what you are forgetting
29:53is they're also Americans too.
29:56And they hear you
29:57loud and clear.
29:58Understood.
29:59Governor Moore
30:00on a bunch of topics.
30:01Appreciate your time tonight.
30:04I appreciate you, Art.
30:05Thank you so much.
30:06Donald Trump
30:08and his allies
30:09have been saying
30:10for some time
30:11that they hope
30:11to end the Epstein matter
30:13or release something
30:14and make it quiet down
30:15and certainly by Labor Day.
30:17Well, it's not going
30:18according to their plan.
30:19Congress is returning.
30:21I say Congress
30:21is returning
30:22to Capitol Hill.
30:24You got a bipartisan
30:25duo that wants
30:27to force a House vote
30:28requiring Trump's DOJ
30:29to release all the Epstein
30:30documents once and for all
30:31since for all the double talk
30:33Trump's administration
30:34is clearly not doing that.
30:36The same duo says
30:37they will hold
30:37a press conference
30:38with Epstein survivors
30:41on the first day
30:42Congress returns
30:43from recess.
30:44I could tell you
30:45here in the newsroom
30:45we hear about a lot
30:47of press conferences
30:47and sometimes you look
30:48and say this is important.
30:49Maybe we'll cover it.
30:51Other times you look
30:52and you say
30:52maybe it's a political gimmick.
30:54It always depends
30:55on the news of the day.
30:56You watch the news
30:56so you probably know that.
30:57But it would be a good bet
30:59that a lot of people
31:01online and in the news media
31:03will be wanting to cover
31:05some version
31:05of that news conference
31:06considering that
31:07Trump has open questions.
31:09He has not fulfilled
31:10his vows for transparency.
31:12And substantively
31:12it matters
31:13when victims
31:14some of whom
31:14have never appeared
31:15in this formulation together
31:16speak out
31:17about what they say
31:18is the Trump
31:19administration's failures.
31:21So that is pressure.
31:22House Democrats
31:23also looked over
31:24this first batch
31:25of documents
31:25that were kind of
31:26pushed out here
31:26in the summer period
31:27from DOJ
31:28and say most of them
31:29are not new.
31:29They were basically
31:30already public.
31:31The DOJ did release
31:33something new
31:33its unusual interview
31:35with the Epstein
31:36co-conspirator Maxwell
31:37but that's raised
31:38a lot of questions
31:40amidst these blanket denials.
31:43I never ever saw
31:46any man
31:47doing something
31:49inappropriate
31:50with a woman
31:52of any age.
31:54And I did introduce him
31:56to women
31:57to women
31:57I did
31:59but not
32:01underage women
32:02so I never saw
32:03an aggressive move.
32:05I never saw anything
32:05that was
32:06non-consensual.
32:08Okay.
32:09I never saw anything
32:10that was
32:10non-consensual.
32:12That's the voice
32:15of a sex trafficking
32:16convict
32:17disclaiming things
32:18she was already
32:19convicted of.
32:20It undercuts
32:20her credibility
32:21and speaks to the farce
32:23of that interview
32:23according to many
32:24legal experts.
32:24We have one on hand
32:26as you see
32:26Joyce Vance
32:26former U.S. attorney
32:27MSNBC legal analyst.
32:29Welcome back.
32:30Joyce
32:31the
32:32trickle
32:34or drip drip
32:34of
32:35some
32:36information
32:37or sometimes
32:38recycled information
32:39from DOJ
32:40seems to be
32:40raising more questions.
32:42They want
32:42to claim
32:43they're releasing stuff
32:44but the big stuff
32:46they haven't released yet
32:47and what they have released
32:48looks
32:48fairly stale.
32:50What does that tell you
32:51about
32:51sort of where they're at
32:52with a president
32:53who once claimed
32:54there would be
32:55transparency in this case?
32:57Well and that's
32:58exactly the issue
32:59here Ari.
33:00DOJ was under
33:02no obligation
33:03to release
33:03its case files
33:04but Donald Trump
33:06the president
33:06the head of the
33:07executive branch
33:08their boss
33:09said that there
33:10would be transparency
33:11and so the fact
33:13that they've backtracked
33:14I think raises
33:15a lot of legitimate
33:16suspicions and concerns
33:17about what might be
33:19in that evidentiary file
33:21if it were released.
33:22So far we've seen
33:23two dodges
33:24we've seen
33:25this ridiculous
33:25end run
33:26this attempt
33:27to get the courts
33:28to release
33:29grand jury material
33:30which failed
33:31and in the process
33:32of that we learned
33:33that the only thing
33:34that was involved
33:35there was two
33:35summary witnesses
33:36testifying
33:37so nothing new there
33:38and then we have
33:40this release
33:41this dump of information
33:42vouched for
33:43by Representative Comer
33:44which turns out
33:46to be nothing new
33:47and so at some point
33:48you know
33:48you don't have to be
33:49a former federal prosecutor
33:51to have your little ears
33:52pick up
33:53and wonder
33:53what it is
33:54that they're trying
33:55to keep
33:55from the American people
33:56Coming up
33:57remaking culture
33:59in Trump's image
34:00Henry Winkler
34:01is here
34:01by the end of the hour
34:02Politics and culture
34:06have always interacted
34:07in this MAGA era
34:08we have a president
34:08trying to control culture
34:10and I'll get to that
34:11in a moment
34:11but I want to reflect
34:12on some aspects
34:13of pop culture
34:14that America
34:15has always enjoyed
34:16that's even unified us
34:17take Happy Days
34:18or the other
34:20unforgettable characters
34:21we know
34:22from Henry Winkler
34:22the Waterboy
34:23or one of my favorites
34:25Barry
34:25it was the night
34:29before Christmas
34:30when all through the house
34:31not a creature
34:33was stirring
34:33not even a mouse
34:35can you dig it
34:36you make me so sick
34:38your entire
34:39habit-inducing
34:40thieving
34:41generation
34:42disgusts me
34:43did you love
34:44my daughter
34:45you gotta get
35:03jumping the shark
35:03in there
35:04Henry Winkler
35:05is back on the beat
35:06of course
35:06he's a legend
35:07an icon
35:07also a really
35:08sweetheart guy
35:09we've come to know
35:09and he's a best-selling
35:11author
35:11his 14th
35:13children's book
35:13is out
35:14Detective Duck
35:14The Mystery
35:15at Emerald Pond
35:17welcome back
35:18thank you
35:18I'm so happy
35:19to be here
35:19how you doing
35:20I'm really good
35:21I was just remarking
35:22when you sat down
35:23you look great
35:23thank you
35:24growing up
35:25the way you did
35:26you grew up
35:27in front of America
35:28you know what
35:29I got it
35:30the Fonz
35:31when I was 27
35:32and it has been
35:34a 50 year journey
35:36and does it make you
35:37feel younger
35:37or older
35:38or is that
35:39the wrong question
35:39you know what
35:40it makes me feel proud
35:41because I'm still
35:42at the table
35:43I'm going to show you
35:44the president
35:46the president of the United States
35:48yeah
35:48yes
35:48President Trump
35:49he admits
35:50why he wants
35:51to take more control
35:53of Hollywood
35:54of pop culture
35:55he is one of the most
35:58anti-First Amendment
35:59presidents in history
36:00that's a documentable fact
36:03right
36:03whether people think
36:04that's good or bad
36:05in our grand American experiment
36:06it's up to them to decide
36:07absolutely
36:07but he wants to censor
36:09and he wants to control
36:10and he only wants
36:11Hollywood
36:11if it goes his way
36:13right
36:13here's what he said
36:14about taking more control
36:15of these historic
36:16Kennedy Center Honors
36:17okay
36:17the Kennedy Center Honors
36:20have been among
36:21the most prestigious awards
36:22in the performing arts
36:23I wanted one
36:24I was never able
36:25to get one
36:25to hell with it
36:26I'll become chairman
36:27and I'll give myself
36:29an honor
36:29if you like him
36:33people find that funny
36:34yes
36:34if you don't trust him
36:36you find it funny too
36:37but
36:38but it's a bit concerning
36:40I mean this is why
36:41it's concerning
36:41because he can
36:42it's concerning
36:44because
36:45the
36:45the fact of the matter
36:47is
36:47we live in a great country
36:49and this country
36:49has been amazing
36:50to me
36:51I am an American
36:54I'm a man
36:55and then I'm a professional
36:57yeah
36:57and people
36:58still say to me
36:59on Twitter
37:00stay in your lane
37:02and
37:03my lane
37:05is being a man
37:06in America
37:07my profession
37:09is being an actor
37:11that I'm so thrilled
37:12I get to do
37:13you started in the 20s
37:15as the
37:16embodiment of cool
37:18yes
37:19was that
37:19a character
37:20and did it help
37:21that was acting
37:21did it help you
37:23channel
37:24being cool
37:25over the years
37:26you know what
37:26it did not
37:28because when I
37:29when I was out
37:30of my jacket
37:31I was still
37:32the
37:33the bowl
37:34of Jell-O Henry
37:35when I was on the set
37:38and I was able to
37:39call up the Fonz
37:41yeah
37:42but I couldn't live
37:43the Fonz
37:43yeah
37:44which I guess goes to
37:45especially when you have
37:46an intense character
37:46or a character
37:47who's seen a certain way
37:48right
37:49trying to stay that cool
37:50is pressure
37:52well you couldn't
37:52and I couldn't live up to him
37:55even if I tried
37:56you know
37:57at that time
37:58I smoked
37:58a lot of cigarettes
38:01and somebody said
38:03don't you feel
38:04like a pressure
38:04and I went
38:05no I don't
38:06because I cannot
38:06live up to
38:08who people want me to be
38:10I can only be
38:11who I am
38:12at the moment
38:13what's changed
38:14in acting
38:16and theater
38:16for you
38:17over the
38:17you know
38:17over your
38:18particularly long run
38:19I am better
38:20because I am
38:22more mature
38:23I
38:24the technology
38:26has changed
38:27but until
38:28AI
38:28completely takes over
38:30and destroys us
38:32only technology
38:35has changed
38:35you need
38:36the writer
38:37the director
38:38the producer
38:39the designer
38:40of the set
38:41the cinematographer
38:42the man who makes
38:43avocado toast
38:45on the set
38:46and the actor
38:47you need
38:48the humanity
38:49in order to
38:50our job
38:52as actors
38:53is to be a mirror
38:54for society
38:56to see themselves
38:57that's our job
38:59what about these rumors
39:00I hate to bring them up
39:01go ahead
39:01that AI wrote
39:03Detective Duck
39:03but I know
39:05they didn't
39:06I was in the room
39:08I was there
39:09I'm kidding
39:09people take me
39:10seriously sometimes
39:11oh yeah I see
39:11but it's okay
39:12because I wrote them
39:15this is the third
39:17in a series
39:17we just finished
39:18the fourth
39:19which will come out
39:20in a year
39:21but this third
39:22she is a detective
39:25she dreams about
39:26being a detective
39:27and she's also
39:28an environmentalist
39:29and she wants
39:31to be a rock star
39:32and the only duck
39:33on the planet
39:34whose father
39:35is a beaver
39:36really?
39:37yes
39:37wow
39:37the magic
39:38that's not Hollywood
39:40that's not imagination
39:41AI could not have
39:41thought that up
39:42well they say
39:43AI is coming
39:44for screenplays though
39:45but I'm sure
39:46that's true
39:46but here it is
39:47this is my
39:48I don't need
39:50to be so cynical
39:51but I believe
39:52that AI
39:53will be very good
39:54like maybe
39:55in a medical thing
39:56that it will help
39:57discover
39:58well it's already
39:59doing mammograms
39:59better than
40:00human eye
40:00okay there you go
40:01but to me
40:03I go back
40:04back to the film
40:052001
40:06oh Hal
40:06at the end
40:07of the script
40:08the man says
40:11Hal would you
40:12open the door please
40:13and Hal says
40:14I don't think so
40:15I think
40:16I don't think so
40:17is coming
40:18as you may also
40:19recall at the end
40:20of that film
40:20I didn't know
40:20you were going
40:21to bring it up
40:21when the human
40:22is appealing
40:23to what looks
40:24a lot like
40:24today's possible
40:26AI
40:26right
40:26Hal
40:27right
40:28and saying
40:29I need you
40:30to open the door
40:30yes
40:31and in the
40:31in the film
40:32someone's going
40:33to die if he doesn't
40:35the AI says
40:36to him
40:36something to the
40:37effect of
40:38it will not be
40:40productive to
40:40continue this
40:41conversation
40:41wow
40:42chilling
40:43yes
40:44more
40:44more chilling
