00:03:24Alas Sainz.
00:03:30You've come down.
00:03:32And here is the driver that they all have to beat.
00:03:35Max Verstappen looking for his fifth consecutive Formula One World Championship.
00:03:40The Red Bull does not look the fastest car, but do you see it's Max Verstappen.
00:03:44Of course he's still in the mix.
00:03:45Yeah, it's the max factor.
00:03:46He's able, like all of these exceptional drivers through the history of the championships in Formula One,
00:03:51they're able to deal with an imbalance in the car.
00:03:55You know, I needed everything to be in the sweet spot,
00:03:57plus some cotton candy to really be able to deliver some performance.
00:04:01But he can extract it in a way that very few can.
00:04:05And I think that's what is basically holding up and propping up Red Bull's performance right now.
00:04:12Liam Larson, biggest spotlight on him.
00:04:15He's been struggling a little bit and he missed out in that free practice session as well.
00:04:19So it could well be a difficult debut for him.
00:04:22Someone has photoshopped Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc onto the Step Brothers poster.
00:04:28There we go.
00:04:29It's a great crowd around here.
00:04:31They're having a lot of fun.
00:04:32It is a wonderful event.
00:04:33There are over 400,000 people making their way through the gate from Thursday to when we leave on Sunday
00:04:40with a winner crown to start off this 24 race season around the world.
00:04:45This incredible journey to crown a champion driver and constructor.
00:04:50Look at that sight.
00:04:52It is nearly time.
00:04:5320 cars about to emerge to the pit lane earlier on.
00:04:57A spin into the gravel for Oliver Behrman.
00:04:59But he's fine to take part.
00:05:01It's not been the easiest time for him.
00:05:03Six full season rookies.
00:05:05He is one of them.
00:05:06A crash in FP1.
00:05:08A crash in FP3 for the British driver.
00:05:11This is going to be hectic, isn't it?
00:05:13When the green light is illuminated in just a few seconds' time, everyone wants to get a piece of the action straight away.
00:05:18And I think they'll do a few laps on this first set of tyres before bolting on a new set.
00:05:22Green light at the end of the pit lane.
00:05:24And after all the running and testing, after all the practice, the time is now for attacking laps at the limit.
00:05:31The Haas cars out onto the circuit.
00:05:34You're looking at Esteban Ocon, who is transferred from Alpine to the American team.
00:05:39Oliver Behrman out there as well.
00:05:41Christian Horner, CEO and team principal at Red Bull Racing, looking on, hoping that Liam Lawson can take a step forward.
00:05:48But earlier on, though, the New Zealander did not set a lap time, a problem with the power unit of the car.
00:05:55I think Lawson's inevitably one to watch out for it, even in Q1, because of the performance of the Red Bull, maybe.
00:06:01And because he's had just such a difficult weekend so far.
00:06:05If he makes it into Q2, he can start to build some confidence through the session.
00:06:09The other one is, as you mentioned already, Behrman.
00:06:10If Behrman can, he needs to get some laps off.
00:06:13Pass us straight out.
00:06:13They're the first cars.
00:06:14He needs to dial in, because he's just done actually a handful of flying laps this weekend so far.
00:06:20Yeah, I think that's a key thing that you mentioned, Julian.
00:06:22Confidence.
00:06:23It's a quantifiable lap time gain.
00:06:25When you're confident, you just, you feel you're putting the car on the bit of tarmac that you need to be on.
00:06:32And when you suddenly start to lack a bit of confidence, start to doubt yourself, the lap time bleeds away.
00:06:37And it's very easy on a track like this, very high speed, to lose a few tenths of a second, just because you're doubting just how much you can commit to the corner.
00:06:44And it's a difficult circuit to find the confidence as well, because it's punishing, because they're of grass.
00:06:51All right, I have a, I have a problem with the keyboard.
00:06:54No, no, no, no.
00:06:55I can't shift the board.
00:06:56Oliver Behrman reporting another issue in what is turning into a really testing weekend.
00:07:06He said in the press conference earlier in the week that he was treating this like his Grand Prix debut.
00:07:12He'll be delighted it's not his Grand Prix debut, because it's just been trouble after trouble after trouble.
00:07:17After a high-speed crash at 9 and 10 in FP1, he spun into that gravel trap in FP3, and now he reports an issue with the gearbox.
00:07:26What a tough start for the British driver.
00:07:29Yeah, if he's going to have a gearbox issue, it's better to have one when he's going to be doing well to get into Q2 anyway.
00:07:35But he does indeed peel into the pits, and this goes from bad to worse for Behrman.
00:07:38Yeah, I guess the only saving grace for him is that Haas just don't seem, even with the other car, to be in a very strong position.
00:07:44So it could be just damage limitation, but it's been a difficult weekend for him to go on board with Jack Doohan, who all eyes.
00:07:52And it feels like, unfairly, a lot of additional pressure as he makes his debut for the team at home in Australia.
00:08:00I think he's done a solid job so far, but it's all about the qualifying timesheets and, of course, the checkered flag on Sunday.
00:08:05Yeah, I was going to say, I think he's had a really good weekend bearing him under pressure, and it's his home race.
00:08:10There's so much on him as a rookie driver, and so far he's been pretty comparable with Pierre Gasly.
00:08:16I thought Alpine might be slightly stronger than they've shown in practice so far.
00:08:20No, it's just broken.
00:08:22Oliver Behrman, you can hear how disconsolate he is in his voice, and he is one of the six full-season rookies making his bow tomorrow, he will hope, given the way that things have gone.
00:08:37Doohan, this will be second Grand Prix start, carrying a lot of speed into turn 11 and paying the price on the exit of the corner.
00:08:43Yeah, thankfully, it's a relatively short acceleration for the next turn, but it still will have cost him a bit of time.
00:08:50It was the understeer.
00:08:51You could just see as he turned the steering wheel, the front didn't bite, and then so often when you have understeer, you end up washing wide towards the exit, and that gave him the moment.
00:09:01Still, the lap time's good enough to go ahead of Russell on a medium, and Ocon in the Haas showing that that car's struggling for the moment.
00:09:06Hulkenberg goes ahead of both Hulkenberg, Doohan, Russell, and Ocon off to a pretty difficult start.
00:09:16Sainz goes over the line in fifth place, so not the easiest lap for him as well.
00:09:20Sainz was struggling to switch on the soft tyre in practice yesterday by way of reference.
00:09:24Early stages, though, we're going to lose the five slowest cars at the end of 13, just over 13 minutes that we've got.
00:09:34Alonso fastest ahead of Hulkenberg, and then Doohan, Russell, Ocon, and Sainz is our order, with plenty enjoying this from the Grand Stats.
00:09:44Interesting the little kid can spot the cameraman when all the older kids can't quite see it, but meanwhile, back on the man that's had a real season last year.
00:09:56Full of confidence going into this one, navigating his way through the traffic.
00:09:59McLaren just feels like, in any condition, through winter testing, and likewise, as his track evolves, they've been able to be there or thereabouts.
00:10:09Gasly slots into second place ahead of Hulkenberg, and then we find ourselves with a brush of the gravel, won't be the last one that we see today.
00:10:21Norris immediately quick out of the box, but DC, time and time again, the cars are flirting with that gravel trap, and if you get too deep into there, you have a massive crash.
00:10:31As we've seen, last couple of years with Alex Al, yeah, it's old school, isn't it, comes to modern Formula One.
00:10:38Gravel traps are really a thing of the past in many of the modern racetracks in F1.
00:10:43It's one of the reasons, actually, why I think that doing the feeder formulas in the UK is so good, because many of the tracks are exactly that.
00:10:50You make a mistake, you make a mistake, there's a penalty. You do a lot of the modern, let's say, Central European circuits.
00:10:55You make a mistake, you open the steering, you run onto the tarmac runoff, so I don't think you get the discipline that is there on a circuit like this.
00:11:04Norris across the line, and he goes fastest of anyone so far.
00:11:08McLaren listed as the pre-season favourites to retain their Constructors' title.
00:11:13Lando Norris, officially with the bookmakers, the favourite for the driver's title, but there's a long way to go.
00:11:19There's a development race, and there's the nature of the season which ebbs and flows, and if you're talking about favourites for the title,
00:11:27Oscar Piastri, with a new contract under his arm, is going to want to be part of that conversation.
00:11:33The driver who was fastest in the final free practice session, trying to do something that no driver has ever done in the history of the Australian Grand Prix,
00:11:41being Australian, and put it on pole, and win the Grand Prix when it's part of the World Championship.
00:11:46McLaren won two right now.
00:11:48Yeah, Oscar just lost a smidge coming out of that left-hander, turn 13, the penultimate corner,
00:11:52just brushed that kerb on the exit, and then he's narrow for the final corner into 14.
00:11:58But McLaren won two at the front of the field, which is where many expected him to be,
00:12:03but it's early days, and the track evolution is going to be so high, particularly at this part of the qualifying hour.
00:12:09Verstappen on a flyer, first lap for him.
00:12:12Yeah, he just is able to find the limit of his own personal grip very quickly.
00:12:17A little bit of gravel, turn six.
00:12:20Keep it on our left side of the car on the floor.
00:12:23OK, understood.
00:12:26Yeah, Verstappen, nice and tidy.
00:12:27This is all exploratory setting times just to get you through into the next part.
00:12:32Well, interesting that he didn't quite manage to ace that final sector, a little bit like Oscar Piastri,
00:12:37but it just continues to show us that as they lay down those Saiter laps, it's all very tight.
00:12:43What we've seen so far is Verstappen is very quick in the middle sector.
00:12:48The McLarens seem the best in the final sector, and that's a replay of Lando Norris and brushing the gravel, which he's radioed in.
00:12:55The first sector seems kind of anyone's game as well, so there's a bit of a trade-off between Red Bull and McLaren.
00:13:01Max was a tenth up on the McLarens in the middle sector on his lap there, but lost that in the final sector.
00:13:08Ten minutes to go.
00:13:10Early laps have been registered.
00:13:12It is Norris ahead of Verstappen.
00:13:14Verstappen splitting the McLarens.
00:13:16Piastri in third, then McLare in fourth.
00:13:19Alonso is having a really tricky time in FP3.
00:13:22Couldn't get the car to turn through turn three.
00:13:25He's ahead of Hamilton.
00:13:26Bortoleto, one of our six full-season rookies in the field.
00:13:30Gasly is eighth, and it's HΓΌlkenberg and Stroll.
00:13:33Down in 13th is Liam Lawson.
00:13:35The two Mercedes running on the mediums right now.
00:13:38George Russell with an 18-year-old teammate in Kimi Antonelli.
00:13:43They've set their times on the yellow-walled rubber, not the fastest tyre available to them.
00:13:48So they do have time in this session, but what Giuliani is going to do is explain to us exactly the Mercedes strategy with that medium tyre right now.
00:13:56So they want to use it up, so they've just got soft tyres for the rest of qualifying.
00:14:00They have an extra set of mediums that they can use, and they're not trying to learn anything.
00:14:05They're just trying to use it so they can save a set of softs for Grand Prix tomorrow or for later on in qualifying.
00:14:11It's not the faster tyre, obviously, but it's not that far away either from what we've seen.
00:14:15Yeah, but would we expect medium to be over a second away?
00:14:19No.
00:14:19And look at Russell now.
00:14:21He's quicker through two sectors.
00:14:22So they've been just bringing it in gently, and now unleashing the performance of that.
00:14:27It should be a few tenths away from the softs.
00:14:30Let's see what Alex Albin can do.
00:14:32Left-hand side of your screen across the line.
00:14:33He's got the fastest middle sector of anyone so far.
00:14:36Breaks himself into the top ten.
00:14:38Seventh place for this man's very good friend, George Russell and Alex Albin, grew up together through the go-kart ranks, climbed the junior formula, raced each other for the Formula 2 title in 2018.
00:14:49Now both contenders for the top ten in this session.
00:14:53Fourth place for George Russell on the medium tyre is encouraging.
00:14:56Yeah, that's the few tenths that we've seen, really, medium to soft, but Mercedes certainly showing their ride in the fight as well.
00:15:02Looks so close at the top of the times already.
00:15:05Yet to see too much from Ferrari, but the second flying laps for everyone have been a big improvement on the first.
00:15:11The tyres are not going away too much, and the track's just getting better.
00:15:15I have this drink connector. It's too high up. My helmet is stuck on it.
00:15:19Okay.
00:15:23So a little bit of an issue there for the world champion.
00:15:26That'll be the simplest of fixes.
00:15:28It's where the drinks tube, I think, connects to the bottle that will be outside of the car, or the bag,
00:15:33and they've probably just taken that off or taped it up on the side.
00:15:37New set of soft tyres for Fernando Alonso.
00:15:40Means that he is improving sector one, sector two, and Charles Leclerc up to third.
00:15:47But Fernando Alonso, two-time world champion, losing a little bit of momentum in the third and final sector.
00:15:55He's a one-time winner around this Grand Prix.
00:15:56Alonso made his debut at this circuit back in 2001, racing at 43 years of age.
00:16:03Oldest driver in the field in Formula One 2025.
00:16:07His teammate, Lance Stroll, finds himself inside the top ten.
00:16:11A reminder for some of our newer fans, you've just got to break in to the top 15,
00:16:15then we'll reset the times for the second part of qualifying.
00:16:18Yeah, Fernando at 43 in Formula One makes it totally credible that Brad Pitt's being a Formula One driver at 60.
00:16:23You've got Lewis Hamilton moving up to seventh place.
00:16:29He's been on the back foot, learning a brand new car, learning a brand new steering wheel arrangement.
00:16:34He's changed a few things on that steering wheel to make it more similar to the Mercedes layout that he was used to.
00:16:41Ah, the level was good.
00:16:4310-12 was full of gravel on the exit car.
00:16:46I'm lucky.
00:16:47I love it when Fernando marks his own homework.
00:16:51Sounds like he's talking to himself.
00:16:52Yeah, he was really pumped up, though.
00:16:55They were great, first two sectors.
00:16:56Well, it was still a good lap, wasn't it?
00:16:58It's still high up as well.
00:17:00Interestingly, Mercedes have pitted Antonelli.
00:17:02Rather than doing the Russell second flying lap on the medium tyre,
00:17:06they've not taken their chances.
00:17:08Lawson flies off the road at turn three.
00:17:10That was so close to being just the merest of taps that brakes the front left.
00:17:18And Kimi Antonelli sparking all over the floor.
00:17:21That's dramatic stuff.
00:17:22Has he had a moment earlier in the lap?
00:17:24Because that is way more from the underside of the car than we've been used to.
00:17:28Has he dragged the car over a curb around this circuit?
00:17:31Because that's not normal.
00:17:32Yeah, that is visually stimulating, but not normally what we'd see.
00:17:36But it definitely looks like he might have damaged the bib there.
00:17:39Yeah, the tray, you see where the floor begins.
00:17:41Underneath the car, Antonelli sparking all over the road.
00:17:45You do have to use the curbs here dramatically.
00:17:48And the Italian teenager, getting used to life in Formula 1, moves up to 14th position.
00:17:54That's not enough for him, though, on the soft tyre now.
00:17:56Only just squeezing into the top 15.
00:17:58And you can see pretty much everyone else is in the pits,
00:18:01ready for a final foray onto the circuit.
00:18:03Yeah, and he's obviously lifted out.
00:18:04Immediately he's gone across the lane.
00:18:06But with five minutes, then I think I would be...
00:18:09If you're going to cover for another tyre, as we now join him,
00:18:11is that where he's run wide?
00:18:13It's got to be the exit of turn six.
00:18:15You have to lean on the kerb there, brush the gravel.
00:18:18But so many of these floors are so intricate.
00:18:21So much of the downforce is generated there.
00:18:23And instantly the sparks fly to tell you that car's running too low.
00:18:27It didn't look like it was anything too jolty over the kerb there.
00:18:30We've seen so many others do it.
00:18:32And his time loss compared to Russell that we just saw
00:18:35was fairly even across three sectors.
00:18:38We've seen the soft tyres hang on for a second lap.
00:18:41So he's got another chance to dig something out.
00:18:43But he really needs to.
00:18:45Yeah, well, with four and a half minutes of this session to go,
00:18:47he's got no choice than cool the tyres,
00:18:50charge the battery, find some clear space,
00:18:53and then send it.
00:18:54So the big names that are in trouble here
00:18:57is Antonelli in 14th,
00:18:58but Lawson in 18th, with that run through the gravel,
00:19:01he's had to go back in for a new set of tyres
00:19:03and has left for an outlap already.
00:19:05So he'll have two shots at it
00:19:07in the last part of this in the Red Bull.
00:19:09I'm surprised Gasly's down in 16th as well.
00:19:11I think Alpine will be really disappointed with that,
00:19:13but credit to Doohan.
00:19:15He's a tenth up with one set of tyres to go.
00:19:17Yeah, good performance from a lot of rookies in the field here at the moment.
00:19:21Here is the man who was charged with replacing Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.
00:19:25George Russell is the team leader.
00:19:27A spectacular sight,
00:19:29but not one that Mercedes wanted to see at that stage.
00:19:32The car running lower than intended,
00:19:34the sparks, the result.
00:19:36He'll actually just be losing a bit of straight-line speed,
00:19:38the amount that's dragging against the asphalt as well.
00:19:41Just sparks flying and just friction
00:19:44all the way down these straights for Antonelli.
00:19:46Sixth place in the Formula 2 Championship last year for Kimi Antonelli,
00:19:49a winner of multiple junior championships.
00:19:51He bypassed Formula 3.
00:19:53Highly unusual route to take.
00:19:56Even Max Verstappen did Formula 3
00:19:57before he was elevated
00:19:59to be the youngest ever Formula 1 driver,
00:20:02point scorer, race winner that we've seen.
00:20:05And Antonelli on the back foot
00:20:06trying to make the next part of qualifying.
00:20:09Bortleto ahead of HΓΌlkenberg is notable.
00:20:12That Sauber is not expected to be very quick this year,
00:20:15but if Bortleto can beat HΓΌlkenberg on a regular basis,
00:20:18that will do his reputation a world of good.
00:20:21Bortleto is the Formula 2 champion of last year
00:20:25and the Formula 3 champion of the year before.
00:20:27Pretty special group of drivers
00:20:28to do back-to-back rugby titles
00:20:30in the third tier and the second tier.
00:20:33Faisa can for Carlos Sainz now.
00:20:35Williams driver, winner of the Grand Prix here last year.
00:20:37He's looked punchy and competitive all weekend long, DC.
00:20:40Yeah, none of these are personal best,
00:20:42but it's all there or thereabouts,
00:20:43so this could be a small improvement.
00:20:46It is indeed.
00:20:48And over the line he goes to seventh position.
00:20:52Hamilton in eighth, then Albany in ninth.
00:20:53Stroll completes the top ten,
00:20:54but the drivers looking over their shoulder at the moment.
00:20:57Antonelli, Bortleto, Gasly looking for a lap time.
00:21:00HΓΌlkenberg so good last year over one lap,
00:21:03looking for a lap time.
00:21:04And especially this man that we ride on board with.
00:21:06Can he escape Q1?
00:21:08Yeah, needs to put the rest of this lap together.
00:21:11The field is so condensed,
00:21:12so even though Lawson's well down on the positions,
00:21:15he's only one second off the top time.
00:21:17He's 18th.
00:21:18It is so close.
00:21:20And he's finding little bits in wide.
00:21:22That's going to cost him.
00:21:23Yeah, got it too much into the left.
00:21:26That high-speed section and that just then,
00:21:28it was inevitable.
00:21:29And, well, he'll get to start another lap,
00:21:32but this lap is definitely not going to be a big improvement.
00:21:35I don't know if he will start another lap,
00:21:37because he's going to be deploying battery all the time on this one.
00:21:40He's wide again.
00:21:40Wide and off.
00:21:41And Liam Lawson finds the grass.
00:21:44He was in touching distance,
00:21:46but it all fell apart at turn nine.
00:21:48By the time that he got to the exit curb of turn 10,
00:21:51the chance had gone.
00:21:53And Lawson,
00:21:54to the dismay of his mechanics in the garage,
00:21:58Lawson will fall at the first hurdle.
00:22:01He's back in the pits,
00:22:03and he's heading out in Q1,
00:22:05along with Oliver Bearman.
00:22:06Oliver Bearman,
00:22:08not able to take part in the session.
00:22:10An issue with the gearbox.
00:22:11Lando Norris is the fastest driver out there,
00:22:13with a minute to go in the session.
00:22:15Can anyone else improve?
00:22:17Gasly and HΓΌlkenberg are the drivers we're focusing on.
00:22:20Gasly's on a lap now,
00:22:2116th,
00:22:22and has to find something,
00:22:23which will then put the pressure on Bortoletto,
00:22:25who's still on an out lap,
00:22:26and will be one of the last to come across the line.
00:22:29Bortoletto winning the Formula 2 championship last year.
00:22:32Kimi Antonelli,
00:22:34multiple race winner in that championship last year,
00:22:37improves to 10th.
00:22:38Wasn't happy with his tyre temperature,
00:22:41but improves to 10th.
00:22:42Let's see what Gasly can do.
00:22:43This is crucial.
00:22:44Gasly finds a time,
00:22:46and gets up to 8th.
00:22:47That's a great lap when he needed it most,
00:22:49and now Hadjar trying to respond.
00:22:51Bortoletto is the driver,
00:22:52to drop in to the bottom 5.
00:22:55Other improvements coming in,
00:22:56though,
00:22:56from so many other drivers behind,
00:22:59where Hadjar has gone up to.
00:23:00That's 9th.
00:23:00Look at Sainz in the Williams 10th.
00:23:02Hamilton's 11th,
00:23:04and not safe just yet either.
00:23:05Oh,
00:23:06they're going to be improvements.
00:23:07Doohan is on the brink at the moment.
00:23:08This would be a great time for a great lap,
00:23:10and that's what the home favourite has done.
00:23:13His father,
00:23:13Mick,
00:23:14looking on,
00:23:15proud of his boy,
00:23:16proud of that effort.
00:23:18Not just debut pressure,
00:23:19but reserve driver pressure as well.
00:23:21Alex Albon down to 14th right now.
00:23:24Bortoletto,
00:23:24the driver,
00:23:25looking for the improvement,
00:23:26to put the pressure on anyone,
00:23:28who can't perform.
00:23:29Albon gets to 7th.
00:23:30He's the first car to take the flag.
00:23:32So it's just whether the two Salbers,
00:23:33can find something now.
00:23:35They're the only two,
00:23:36that can jump up,
00:23:37with Ocon out,
00:23:38and they're not finding a lot,
00:23:39on this lap so far.
00:23:40Hamilton is down in 14th,
00:23:42but improving Sector 1,
00:23:44and Sector 2.
00:23:45It needs to be personal best,
00:23:47for HΓΌlkenberg and Bortoletto.
00:23:49First Sector,
00:23:50was not an improvement.
00:23:51Second Sector,
00:23:52they're finding some time,
00:23:54to give themselves an opportunity,
00:23:56as Hamilton goes to 6th place.
00:23:58Can Bortoletto,
00:24:00on his Formula 1 debut,
00:24:01hasn't even had an FP1 before,
00:24:03hasn't appeared on a Grand Prix weekend before,
00:24:06can he find anything,
00:24:07and can HΓΌlkenberg,
00:24:08use all of that speed,
00:24:10to unlock the pace when it matters.
00:24:13HΓΌlkenberg goes over the line,
00:24:14but only to 16th.
00:24:16So Salbers hopes,
00:24:17rest with the rookie,
00:24:19the Brazilian driver,
00:24:20Gabriel Bortoletto to the line,
00:24:21trying to knock out Antonelli,
00:24:23he comes over the line,
00:24:24and Bortoletto does so.
00:24:27He goes to 15th position,
00:24:30and Bortoletto,
00:24:31means that it's Antonelli,
00:24:33HΓΌlkenberg,
00:24:35Lawson,
00:24:35and the Haas pair of Ocon,
00:24:38and Oliver Behrman,
00:24:39who had a gearbox issue,
00:24:41who fall at the first hurdle.
00:24:45Are we through?
00:24:46Next to me,
00:24:47I've just been bumped.
00:24:48Well,
00:24:49to quote my old buddy,
00:24:52Mark Webber,
00:24:52Formula One isn't a finishing school,
00:24:54it's a tough one.
00:24:56He's 6 tenths off P1,
00:24:58Antonelli,
00:24:59he's out in Q1.
00:25:01What a job,
00:25:02from Bortoletto.
00:25:03To out-qualify HΓΌlkenberg,
00:25:05who was sensational,
00:25:06over one lap,
00:25:08he fought his way,
00:25:09into contention.
00:25:10You know when a driver,
00:25:11hasn't taken part in an FP1,
00:25:13before he gets to Formula One,
00:25:15and his Grand Prix debut.
00:25:16Normally you would run,
00:25:18at least in the first practice session,
00:25:19of a weekend at some point,
00:25:21and he has distinguished himself.
00:25:23Champion of Formula Three,
00:25:25and Formula Two,
00:25:25in back-to-back years,
00:25:27the same category,
00:25:29as Charles Leclerc,
00:25:30George Russell,
00:25:30and Oscar Piastri.
00:25:31Great start to his season.
00:25:33Yeah,
00:25:33you don't do that,
00:25:34if you're not a class act,
00:25:35winning F3,
00:25:36then F2,
00:25:36consecutively.
00:25:38Lawson,
00:25:38will be gutted.
00:25:40That's a really tough run,
00:25:42full of mistakes,
00:25:43that's left him down in 18th.
00:25:45Lawson and Ocon also,
00:25:47had a mistake on his final lap,
00:25:48and couldn't get up the order.
00:25:50If you take those two out,
00:25:52Behrman didn't run,
00:25:53then the entire field,
00:25:54is 6 tenths.
00:25:56Lawson should be in there.
00:25:59Ocon we're not sure about,
00:26:00because Haas have had,
00:26:00quite frankly,
00:26:01a miserable weekend,
00:26:02but the field,
00:26:03is separated by 6 tenths.
00:26:05Sorry,
00:26:05it did say,
00:26:06it did sound like you said,
00:26:076 tenths of a second,
00:26:08but that cannot be true.
00:26:09With all of these teams,
00:26:10building their own cars,
00:26:12that is,
00:26:13remarkably close.
00:26:15Well,
00:26:15it's closer,
00:26:16than F3 and F2,
00:26:17and they're one big formulas.
00:26:18This is,
00:26:19yeah,
00:26:20I think Julian's,
00:26:21emphasised it,
00:26:22sufficiently.
00:26:23This is incredibly tight.
00:26:25I've been in Formula 1,
00:26:26where,
00:26:26you'd be 6 tenths off full,
00:26:27and you'd still be second,
00:26:28on the grid.
00:26:29Can I tell you,
00:26:30I'll tell you in a second.
00:26:31I had no tyres in the lot.
00:26:36That is an issue,
00:26:37that the drivers face,
00:26:38around this circuit.
00:26:39We've seen,
00:26:40margins in the past here.
00:26:42The year that DC won,
00:26:43in 1997,
00:26:44pole position that year,
00:26:45decided,
00:26:45first and second,
00:26:461.7 seconds.
00:26:50The entire field,
00:26:52is separated,
00:26:52by 6 tenths.
00:26:54You're looking,
00:26:54at the central business district,
00:26:56of Melbourne.
00:26:57You are looking,
00:26:57at a Formula 1 season,
00:26:58that is genuinely,
00:27:00too close to call.
00:27:02We have lost,
00:27:03Antonelli,
00:27:04HΓΌlkenberg,
00:27:05HΓΌlkenberg in 17th,
00:27:07Lawson in 18th,
00:27:08and the two Haas drivers,
00:27:09Opho in 19th,
00:27:10and Oliver Behrman.
00:27:12What position?
00:27:13Good job there.
00:27:14You are just P15,
00:27:15you just went through,
00:27:16just about.
00:27:17I should be happy for that,
00:27:19but,
00:27:20I'm actually happy,
00:27:21so,
00:27:21good.
00:27:24I'm actually happy.
00:27:26Yeah,
00:27:26yeah,
00:27:27he's just outqualified,
00:27:28his teammate,
00:27:28number one,
00:27:29which is the best thing,
00:27:30you can do,
00:27:30especially when it's someone,
00:27:31as quick as Nico HΓΌlkenberg,
00:27:33and he gets another shot,
00:27:34he gets another play,
00:27:35and go as fast,
00:27:35as he can around this circuit,
00:27:37and because the field's so tight,
00:27:39yeah,
00:27:39he's only a couple of tenths off,
00:27:40getting in the top 10 now,
00:27:41for Toledo.
00:27:43Wow,
00:27:44incredible stuff,
00:27:45and a remarkable,
00:27:46remarkable,
00:27:48start to Formula 1 qualifying,
00:27:50in 2025,
00:27:52HΓΌlkenberg,
00:27:53finding the gravel,
00:27:54his new rookie teammate,
00:27:55finding Q2.
00:27:57Yeah,
00:27:58just didn't feel very good,
00:28:01very connected.
00:28:04Six hundredths,
00:28:05between the two Sauber's.
00:28:07Let's go to the paddock,
00:28:08and check in,
00:28:09with Ruth Buscom,
00:28:10about Q1.
00:28:12Wow,
00:28:13a session of marginal gains,
00:28:15not quite the tightest Q1 ever,
00:28:17that honour still belongs to Austria,
00:28:180.798 seconds,
00:28:19between P1 and P20,
00:28:21but the quarter was decided,
00:28:23by less than that,
00:28:240.61 for the more Toledo,
00:28:260.66 for,
00:28:28for that Mercedes,
00:28:29but that isn't even,
00:28:30the whole story,
00:28:31he was on that medium tyre,
00:28:33at the beginning of the session,
00:28:34why did Mercedes do that?
00:28:35They used that hard tyre,
00:28:36remember yesterday,
00:28:38so they're at a little bit,
00:28:39of a disadvantage,
00:28:40they want to have,
00:28:40the same number of soft tyres,
00:28:42as everybody else,
00:28:43which means,
00:28:44that they have to use,
00:28:45that extra medium,
00:28:46in that session,
00:28:47it is really hard,
00:28:48to go between,
00:28:49a compound step,
00:28:50now,
00:28:51in the olden days,
00:28:52I.K.A.,
00:28:52about five years ago,
00:28:53we used to do that,
00:28:54all the time,
00:28:54because the margins,
00:28:55weren't that much,
00:28:56if you didn't extract,
00:28:57every single ounce,
00:28:58of the tyre,
00:28:58it wasn't really,
00:28:59the end of the world,
00:29:00especially if you were,
00:29:01a big fast team,
00:29:02now,
00:29:03honestly,
00:29:03it's really tough,
00:29:05they gave him a tough challenge,
00:29:06and he did a good job,
00:29:07honestly,
00:29:08jumping from that,
00:29:08that C4 medium tyre,
00:29:10to that C5 soft tyre,
00:29:12is a really big grip step,
00:29:13back to you.
00:29:15Thank you,
00:29:16Ruth.
00:29:18Incredibly intense,
00:29:19Q1 session,
00:29:20you're looking at,
00:29:21Albert Park,
00:29:22and St Kilda Beach,
00:29:23in the distance,
00:29:24on the way,
00:29:25to the ocean,
00:29:26wonderful place,
00:29:26to start the year,
00:29:27wonderful racetrack,
00:29:29but,
00:29:30it will be,
00:29:31not the start,
00:29:32to the campaign,
00:29:33that so many wanted,
00:29:34Kimi Antonelli,
00:29:35unsurprisingly,
00:29:36Mercedes reporting,
00:29:37bib damage,
00:29:38to the underside,
00:29:39of the floor,
00:29:39so where the floor begins,
00:29:40underneath the driver's cockpit,
00:29:42was damaged,
00:29:43which would have impacted,
00:29:44his pace,
00:29:45and he falls,
00:29:46at Q1,
00:29:47along with,
00:29:47Hulkenberg,
00:29:48Lawson,
00:29:49and the two,
00:29:50Haas,
00:29:50Ocon,
00:29:51and,
00:29:51Behrman,
00:29:5215 to go again,
00:29:53in 15 minutes,
00:29:54in a few moments time.
00:29:56It's just even more brutal,
00:29:57isn't it,
00:29:58for rookies particularly,
00:29:59but having the whole field,
00:30:00so close,
00:30:02if you take Red Bull,
00:30:04and you take,
00:30:04let's have a look on board,
00:30:05with Antonelli,
00:30:06at where he went wide,
00:30:07and had the damage,
00:30:09oh,
00:30:09it's so subtle,
00:30:10I,
00:30:11you can't blame that,
00:30:12on the driver,
00:30:13I don't think,
00:30:14we've seen Norris,
00:30:15go through there,
00:30:16we've seen so many,
00:30:17Verstappen's been through there,
00:30:18and way wider,
00:30:19is the point,
00:30:20and wider,
00:30:20and not done damage,
00:30:22and yet,
00:30:22it's a quick line,
00:30:23angle of attack,
00:30:25well you can't,
00:30:25I guess the point is,
00:30:27to make,
00:30:27you can't leave room,
00:30:29on the exit of the corner,
00:30:29otherwise you're leaving time,
00:30:30on the table,
00:30:31I call that unlucky,
00:30:33for Antonelli,
00:30:34and because the whole field,
00:30:35is separated by not very much,
00:30:36you're half a second away,
00:30:38from a race winning driver,
00:30:39in the same car,
00:30:40on your debut,
00:30:41you're now out in Q1,
00:30:43there's just no reprieve,
00:30:44for any of these guys,
00:30:45yeah,
00:30:45and you've got,
00:30:46even less experience,
00:30:47of the racetrack,
00:30:49as it evolves,
00:30:50through qualifying,
00:30:51you're just a spectator,
00:30:52looking at the data,
00:30:53that comes from your teammate,
00:30:55David Coulthard,
00:30:56Jolion Palmer,
00:30:58and Alex Jakes,
00:30:58talking you through,
00:30:59the opening qualifying session,
00:31:00of the year,
00:31:02and we move,
00:31:02into Q2,
00:31:04now if you thought,
00:31:05the first session,
00:31:05was dramatic at the end,
00:31:06this is going to be,
00:31:07ludicrous stuff,
00:31:08because if the entire field,
00:31:09is separated by six tenths,
00:31:10of a second,
00:31:11and it should elongate,
00:31:12for my word,
00:31:13it's competitive out there,
00:31:14and that means,
00:31:16one lock up,
00:31:17one wide moment,
00:31:18maybe five centimetres,
00:31:19to the left there,
00:31:20and you could be heading out,
00:31:22even if you're a favourite,
00:31:23like this man,
00:31:24Charles Leclerc,
00:31:24former winner,
00:31:25of this Grand Prix,
00:31:26in 2022,
00:31:28well we're talking,
00:31:28about the rookies,
00:31:29and how difficult,
00:31:30it is for them,
00:31:31after 30 years,
00:31:32around this sport,
00:31:33I think I made it,
00:31:33might have made a rookie error,
00:31:34I've gone on,
00:31:36way too emotional,
00:31:37too early,
00:31:37to this Formula One season,
00:31:39and I,
00:31:40you know,
00:31:41I just,
00:31:41I feel for them,
00:31:42so much about that,
00:31:43first opportunity,
00:31:45to show their skills,
00:31:46but what does this mean,
00:31:47we're going to get here,
00:31:48who's going to be the follower,
00:31:49doesn't make it,
00:31:50into the top ten,
00:31:50we could have one of the big scalps,
00:31:52not make it through,
00:31:53I went that hard,
00:31:54about 15 minutes,
00:31:54into FP1 DC,
00:31:56I don't know,
00:31:57where I'm going to be tomorrow,
00:31:57this is just,
00:31:59it's an emotional rollercoaster,
00:32:01Race 1 Melbourne,
00:32:03you know,
00:32:04it's a strange one,
00:32:05when I'm having to peel,
00:32:06these two,
00:32:07off the ceiling,
00:32:08they're so excited,
00:32:09we're on board,
00:32:10with Max Verstappen,
00:32:12this season,
00:32:13which has picked up,
00:32:14realistically,
00:32:15with a competitive,
00:32:16picture,
00:32:17of 2024,
00:32:1913 minutes to go,
00:32:20riding on board,
00:32:22with Max Verstappen,
00:32:23rotating the car,
00:32:23through turn number five,
00:32:25now this is the corner,
00:32:26we've been talking about,
00:32:27turn six,
00:32:28got to carry speed through,
00:32:30you see,
00:32:30just measured,
00:32:31perfectly by the world champion,
00:32:33I wouldn't expect anything else,
00:32:34but they are so quick,
00:32:36on the apex,
00:32:37on that corner,
00:32:39best first sector,
00:32:40of the session,
00:32:41so far from Max,
00:32:42picks up the speed,
00:32:43this is where Red Bull are good,
00:32:44and now we're into,
00:32:45the high speed section,
00:32:46break down,
00:32:47and a gear feather,
00:32:48correction through turn 10,
00:32:50not perfect,
00:32:51as if I can criticise,
00:32:54the four time world champion,
00:32:55but there's definitely,
00:32:56a little bit of time,
00:32:57that he can improve,
00:32:58through that high speed chicane,
00:32:59but the amount of G,
00:33:01that over 5G,
00:33:02lateral,
00:33:03as they launch the car,
00:33:04into that corner,
00:33:05it's so difficult,
00:33:07to put our audience,
00:33:08in the cockpit,
00:33:09to just imagine,
00:33:10the forces,
00:33:11that are going through,
00:33:12the driver at that point,
00:33:15so Max Verstappen,
00:33:15completes the lap,
00:33:16goes ahead of George Russell,
00:33:18and here we go,
00:33:20up to the top,
00:33:21of the time page,
00:33:21first effort,
00:33:22of the day,
00:33:23others completing,
00:33:24their lap,
00:33:25including the Ferrari pair,
00:33:26this will be a good reference,
00:33:27between Charles Leclerc,
00:33:28Max Verstappen,
00:33:2910th and a half,
00:33:30between those two old rivals,
00:33:32talking of the rivalry,
00:33:33between Verstappen,
00:33:35here's Lewis Hamilton,
00:33:37now surrounded,
00:33:39by Ferrari Red,
00:33:40in that cockpit,
00:33:41said it was on the,
00:33:41most important moments,
00:33:43of his entire life,
00:33:44the first time he sat,
00:33:45in the 2025 car,
00:33:47he's relishing,
00:33:47the change of scenery,
00:33:48and he slots,
00:33:49into second position,
00:33:51and very nearly,
00:33:52four tenths of a second,
00:33:53back from Verstappen's,
00:33:54benchmark,
00:33:55still feeling his way,
00:33:57through the circuit,
00:33:58a circuit he's been on pole,
00:34:00eight times before at,
00:34:02as we go on board,
00:34:03with the new Mercedes team leader,
00:34:05sole remaining Mercedes,
00:34:06in the session,
00:34:06George Russell,
00:34:07new boots for Verstappen,
00:34:09used tyres,
00:34:10for both Ferraris,
00:34:11but Hamilton had to use,
00:34:12an extra set of softs,
00:34:13in Q1,
00:34:14to make sure,
00:34:14we saw him,
00:34:15in a little bit of jeopardy,
00:34:16at the end,
00:34:16and he had to run that,
00:34:18to make sure he,
00:34:19he got out of trouble,
00:34:20Russell drives to the line,
00:34:21and comes across,
00:34:21in the Mercedes,
00:34:22that looks really,
00:34:23competent as well,
00:34:23this is a great opening,
00:34:25qualifying for Mercedes,
00:34:26so far,
00:34:27with Russell,
00:34:28at least,
00:34:29used tyres for him,
00:34:30the best of the rest,
00:34:31behind Max,
00:34:32Russell's been on the front row,
00:34:34at this Grand Prix,
00:34:35in the past,
00:34:36he's led this Grand Prix,
00:34:38as well,
00:34:38that year,
00:34:39that he was,
00:34:40then had an engine failure,
00:34:41was able to take the flag,
00:34:42one year ago,
00:34:43undone by Fernando Alonso's,
00:34:45race craft,
00:34:46at turn six,
00:34:47found the barrier,
00:34:48at the end,
00:34:49of the Grand Prix,
00:34:51Piastri goes ahead,
00:34:52of Verstappen,
00:34:53as Piastri,
00:34:54bringing a cheer,
00:34:55from the grandstands,
00:34:56he's got amazing support,
00:34:58around here,
00:34:58like you would expect,
00:35:00one of their own,
00:35:01live just down the road,
00:35:02in the suburb,
00:35:03of Brighton,
00:35:05and the man from Melbourne,
00:35:06desperate,
00:35:06to try,
00:35:07and claim,
00:35:08his home victory,
00:35:09looks to have the car,
00:35:11to do so,
00:35:12this weekend,
00:35:12Piastri ahead of Norris,
00:35:13by eight hundredths,
00:35:15of a second,
00:35:16new tyres,
00:35:17for the two McLarens as well,
00:35:18to get ahead of Verstappen,
00:35:20new tyres for the Williams,
00:35:21to go either side,
00:35:22of Lewis Hamilton,
00:35:23on this opening lap as well,
00:35:25the Ferraris,
00:35:26and George Russell,
00:35:27on the used.
00:35:30Lance Stroll comes over the line,
00:35:31Canadian driver,
00:35:32puts the time,
00:35:34on the board,
00:35:35so rather,
00:35:35is peeling back to the pit,
00:35:36and we've got outlaps,
00:35:37for Yuki Tsunoda,
00:35:38Jack Doohm,
00:35:39Pierre Gasly,
00:35:39Isaac Hadjar,
00:35:41and the man who beat him,
00:35:42to the Formula 2 title,
00:35:43last year,
00:35:43Gabriel Bortoletto,
00:35:44those two putting on,
00:35:45a wonderful championship,
00:35:46all the way to the end,
00:35:47in Abu Dhabi,
00:35:49difference in the tyres,
00:35:50is going to disappear,
00:35:51as we move into the later runs,
00:35:53so it will converge in the middle,
00:35:54DC.
00:35:55Yeah,
00:35:55it feels like,
00:35:56that top eight,
00:35:57is kind of what we're going to have,
00:35:59in which order,
00:36:00as you see Alonso,
00:36:01fighting,
00:36:02manhandling the car,
00:36:03through that very high speed chicane,
00:36:04it's causing a lot of difficulties,
00:36:07for the various drivers,
00:36:08but it really feels,
00:36:09that this is a fight,
00:36:10for the final two places,
00:36:11out of your,
00:36:13I guess your,
00:36:14Gasly's,
00:36:15Hadjers,
00:36:15Tsunoda's,
00:36:16doing Bortoletto,
00:36:17remains to be seen,
00:36:19but the difficulty,
00:36:20getting a perfect lap together,
00:36:22is clear.
00:36:22That's it there,
00:36:2410.
00:36:2510 left hand side,
00:36:27correct?
00:36:28Yeah.
00:36:30Yeah,
00:36:31a bit of a bounce,
00:36:32on the,
00:36:33the tooth of the kerb,
00:36:34there for Sainz,
00:36:35didn't go as wide as Alonso,
00:36:36who had,
00:36:37I mean that was a mighty moment,
00:36:38for Fernando,
00:36:39their first lap in,
00:36:40in the Aston,
00:36:41and he was properly,
00:36:42into the gravel,
00:36:43and bouncing harder,
00:36:43so the two Spaniards,
00:36:44probably both having a floor check,
00:36:46as they come back into the pits.
00:36:47It would always be easier,
00:36:49if there was an arm co-barrier,
00:36:50at the edge of the circuit there,
00:36:52because then you don't get,
00:36:52enticed into,
00:36:54just running onto the edge,
00:36:55of the kerb,
00:36:55and then if you go too far,
00:36:57then you lose downforce,
00:36:58and it sucks you over the top,
00:37:00but you know,
00:37:01a barrier is an absolute end stop,
00:37:03and since we've been coming here,
00:37:05at 96,
00:37:06we've seen people,
00:37:07damaged floors,
00:37:08crash the car,
00:37:09on that high speed chicane exit.
00:37:10I don't know if I can imagine,
00:37:12going through that corner,
00:37:13with a barrier on the outside though,
00:37:15oh,
00:37:15give me at least the 10 meters,
00:37:17that's there.
00:37:19Hadjar goes ahead,
00:37:20of Stroll,
00:37:20Hadjar with new tires,
00:37:21on his racing ball,
00:37:24and new left-hand side,
00:37:25with Jack Doohan,
00:37:26his teammate,
00:37:27Pierre Gasly,
00:37:27has just gone over the line,
00:37:28and gone ahead of Sainz,
00:37:29who had that wide moment,
00:37:30on the exit of turn 10,
00:37:32this is the 14th,
00:37:32and final turn,
00:37:33around this 3.2 mile,
00:37:355.2 kilometer circuit,
00:37:37and doing just short,
00:37:39of Hadjar's benchmark,
00:37:40in the end,
00:37:41quite a bit short,
00:37:42in terms of the gap,
00:37:43on the timing page,
00:37:44Bortoleto,
00:37:45the star of Q1,
00:37:46you have to say,
00:37:47when he outqualified,
00:37:48HΓΌlkenberg,
00:37:49and did it at the last,
00:37:50currently the slowest,
00:37:51of those,
00:37:51who have put a time,
00:37:52on the board,
00:37:53Fernando Alonso,
00:37:54bailed out of his lap,
00:37:54we saw those two,
00:37:55oversteering moments,
00:37:56at high speed,
00:37:57and he did not complete,
00:37:58knowing it wasn't,
00:37:59going to be competitive,
00:38:01it means that the last time,
00:38:02on the board,
00:38:03at this first run,
00:38:04is Yuki Tsunoda,
00:38:05in his fifth season,
00:38:06in Formula 1 now,
00:38:07still smarting,
00:38:08without being,
00:38:09passed over,
00:38:10for promotion,
00:38:11to the senior team,
00:38:12and he puts it,
00:38:13P6,
00:38:14in the order,
00:38:14as Jack Doohan's time,
00:38:16is deleted,
00:38:17for track limits,
00:38:18at turn 12.
00:38:19Yeah,
00:38:20used tyre as well,
00:38:21for Doohan,
00:38:21for Bortoleto,
00:38:22for a few of them down there,
00:38:23so we're going to get,
00:38:24in the last seven minutes,
00:38:25the whole field,
00:38:26closing up again,
00:38:27and get those fine margins,
00:38:28when everyone,
00:38:29goes on to a new tyre,
00:38:30the exciting thing is,
00:38:32I mean we've already lost,
00:38:33a Mercedes,
00:38:34and a Red Bull in Q1,
00:38:35but when you look at,
00:38:36who can get into Q3 now,
00:38:38Tsunoda,
00:38:39absolutely can,
00:38:40Hadjot,
00:38:40absolutely can,
00:38:41both racing balls look decent,
00:38:43Aston Martin,
00:38:43are showing a turn of speed,
00:38:44that we weren't sure,
00:38:45if they'd have after testing,
00:38:46but they've unlocked something,
00:38:48they could get there,
00:38:49Alpine,
00:38:50Doohan's been great so far,
00:38:52he's been matching Gasly,
00:38:53Gasly's run a new tyre there,
00:38:54to get ahead of Sainz,
00:38:55the Williams are both there,
00:38:57anyone,
00:38:58I think that's what,
00:38:59what I'm getting to,
00:39:00I think anyone could be there,
00:39:01a big opportunity,
00:39:03and also if you consider,
00:39:04that we've got a big rule change,
00:39:06coming in Formula 1,
00:39:07to 2026,
00:39:08if you can score points early,
00:39:11you can make your team's life,
00:39:12a lot easier,
00:39:14brush of the gravel trap,
00:39:15for Charles Leclerc,
00:39:16as he makes his way,
00:39:16through turn number six,
00:39:17this is all flat,
00:39:18flat to the floor,
00:39:19as you make your way,
00:39:20to nine and ten,
00:39:22the left-hander,
00:39:23and then the right-hander,
00:39:24taken,
00:39:24at such speed,
00:39:25and let's have a look,
00:39:26at the speed that Charles Leclerc is taking,
00:39:28through those corners,
00:39:29yeah,
00:39:29no personal best,
00:39:30with the brush of the gravel,
00:39:31through turn six,
00:39:33this is a good comparison,
00:39:34of Ferrari v Ferrari,
00:39:35Hamilton,
00:39:36eight seconds back,
00:39:37on the road,
00:39:37and they are,
00:39:38really comparable,
00:39:39through the first two sectors,
00:39:40not a tenth between them,
00:39:41through other one,
00:39:42using the roller curb,
00:39:43on the exit,
00:39:45driver from Monaco,
00:39:46who had a hugely competitive season,
00:39:49last year,
00:39:50and the driver,
00:39:51who,
00:39:52was able to take 13 podiums,
00:39:54the best total,
00:39:55he has managed,
00:39:55in any of his Formula One seasons,
00:39:58comes across the line,
00:40:02in fifth position,
00:40:03let's see what Lewis Hamilton can do,
00:40:04he's a few meters back,
00:40:05on the main straight,
00:40:07we cut on board,
00:40:08to Hamilton,
00:40:08who moves ahead of Tsunoda,
00:40:09and up to sixth place,
00:40:11it's a bit disappointing,
00:40:12for both Ferraris,
00:40:13in the final sector though,
00:40:14when the margins are so tight,
00:40:16to be three and four tenths back,
00:40:17and that is now,
00:40:18on a new tyre,
00:40:19with the best of the track,
00:40:20that we've had so far,
00:40:21they've both lost a heap,
00:40:23in the final sector,
00:40:24we saw Leclerc,
00:40:25I didn't see him,
00:40:26make any obvious errors there,
00:40:28no I think it's a case,
00:40:29of the tyres,
00:40:30there's the thermal,
00:40:32issues that,
00:40:33the drivers have to manage,
00:40:34they're,
00:40:35obviously just overheating,
00:40:37towards the end of the lap,
00:40:38and running out of grip,
00:40:39we've seen it a lot,
00:40:40haven't we,
00:40:40this is the C5,
00:40:41it's a very soft tyre,
00:40:42would have been the softest,
00:40:43last year in the range,
00:40:45and the temperature,
00:40:46is really scorching,
00:40:47over 40 degree track temperature,
00:40:49Lawson said he lost the tyres,
00:40:51and had a very,
00:40:52well he went off the road,
00:40:53a couple of times,
00:40:53in the end of his,
00:40:54Q1 lap in the Red Bull,
00:40:56balancing it,
00:40:57through all of the corners here,
00:40:58is not easy,
00:40:59they put so much energy,
00:41:00they put so much energy,
00:41:00through the tyres,
00:41:01flashing through these fast corners,
00:41:03another gravel brush,
00:41:05car number six,
00:41:06Isaac Hadjar,
00:41:08his first full season,
00:41:10check the flow,
00:41:11so exit of six,
00:41:14not clear,
00:41:14and you see how unlucky,
00:41:17Antonelli is,
00:41:17don't you,
00:41:18I mean he didn't go off,
00:41:19nearly as much as,
00:41:19as these guys,
00:41:21that's why Due,
00:41:22had his lap time deleted as well,
00:41:24yeah,
00:41:24all four wheels,
00:41:25beyond the white line,
00:41:26means your lap time is deleted,
00:41:27no matter where,
00:41:28on the circuit,
00:41:29it happens,
00:41:30that is a tough one,
00:41:31on that particular corner though,
00:41:33because there's no question,
00:41:34that you're,
00:41:34losing performance,
00:41:36in the case of Due,
00:41:37and running wide there,
00:41:38and this,
00:41:40well,
00:41:40they've changed the kerbs there,
00:41:42to reduce the likelihood,
00:41:43of incident,
00:41:44in comparison,
00:41:45to previous years,
00:41:46and to me,
00:41:47I think we're just going to have,
00:41:49more and more incidents there,
00:41:50heart stopping for Tsunoda,
00:41:52really,
00:41:53really big moment for him,
00:41:54when you're going through the gravel,
00:41:55you are,
00:41:55you're obviously going to lose grip,
00:41:57it's not the quickest way,
00:41:58unless you can straight line it,
00:41:59and then you can get away with it,
00:42:01I think Yuki there,
00:42:01with a bit of steering angle,
00:42:02and it just,
00:42:03just caught the car out,
00:42:06very good reactions,
00:42:08okay,
00:42:08three minutes to go,
00:42:09we need a top 10,
00:42:10order,
00:42:11to,
00:42:12begin,
00:42:13Q3,
00:42:14in a few moments time,
00:42:15and everyone has,
00:42:16an opportunity here,
00:42:18Hadja will be looking,
00:42:19for a clean route through,
00:42:20Stroll will be looking,
00:42:21for a clean lap,
00:42:21Portoleto as well,
00:42:23nothing really to lose,
00:42:24Alonso,
00:42:25needs to have a little bit more,
00:42:26compliance at high speed,
00:42:28and doing as well,
00:42:29trying to keep it,
00:42:29within the track limits,
00:42:30you can see the used tyres,
00:42:32on the McLaren there,
00:42:34they're obviously feeling safe,
00:42:35in first and second,
00:42:36for now,
00:42:38six tenths,
00:42:39back to the top 10,
00:42:40which is Sainz,
00:42:41nine tenths,
00:42:42back to 11,
00:42:43but that will close up,
00:42:44when everyone else,
00:42:45puts on the new tyres,
00:42:46and find some grip,
00:42:46Gabriel Bortoleto,
00:42:49the sole sauber,
00:42:50left in the session,
00:42:51going nice and early,
00:42:53puts his way down,
00:42:54to turn 11,
00:42:56driver who was a two time winner,
00:42:58in the Formula 2 Championship,
00:42:59last year,
00:43:00on his way,
00:43:01to the title,
00:43:03superb consistency,
00:43:04others from,
00:43:05boom and bust,
00:43:06there were drivers,
00:43:07who won on more occasions,
00:43:09but he earned his place,
00:43:10in Formula 1,
00:43:10Matteo Bonotto,
00:43:11once a Ferrari,
00:43:12now overseeing things,
00:43:14Jonathan Wheatley,
00:43:15is going to be taking,
00:43:16the role of team principal there,
00:43:18and then it will be,
00:43:18CEO duties,
00:43:20for Matteo Bonotto,
00:43:21and there's so many,
00:43:22new team mate pairings,
00:43:23this year as well,
00:43:24only two teams,
00:43:25have the same line up,
00:43:26McLaren and Aston Martin,
00:43:27everyone else,
00:43:28has got a new team mate,
00:43:29to work with,
00:43:29and the first qualifying,
00:43:31of the season,
00:43:31is a great chance,
00:43:32to just show,
00:43:33I'm the faster,
00:43:35I'm the faster,
00:43:35and it could be,
00:43:36racing bulls,
00:43:37it could be anyone,
00:43:38even if you go out in Q2,
00:43:39you can out qualify,
00:43:40your team mate,
00:43:40you get a little bit,
00:43:41of a psychological advantage,
00:43:42even if it's a thousand,
00:43:44of a second,
00:43:44it's that grid place,
00:43:46as he's had to,
00:43:47lift out of that,
00:43:49surely,
00:43:50that's going to be,
00:43:51Vortoleto done,
00:43:52you can see the time,
00:43:53that he lost,
00:43:56Jolion and DC,
00:43:57were nearly on the back wall,
00:43:58of this commentary box,
00:43:59that could have been,
00:44:00an enormous crash,
00:44:02for the Brazilian rookie,
00:44:03who did all,
00:44:04the heavy lifting in Q1,
00:44:06but has blown his charts,
00:44:08it's the family as well,
00:44:10an emotional roller coaster,
00:44:12it sounds like,
00:44:12they're in the cockpit,
00:44:13with him,
00:44:14but yeah,
00:44:15no harm in trying,
00:44:16I think he'll be,
00:44:17very happy,
00:44:18with his debut,
00:44:19qualifying session,
00:44:22good effort,
00:44:23to even get,
00:44:23into the second part,
00:44:24of qualifying,
00:44:25and now,
00:44:26let's see,
00:44:27who can progress then,
00:44:28Vortoleto,
00:44:29on his push lap,
00:44:30heading wide,
00:44:31at turn four,
00:44:31we've seen that a lot,
00:44:32from many drivers,
00:44:32so far this weekend,
00:44:34including all four wheels,
00:44:35over the road,
00:44:35say Alex Albin,
00:44:36in FP3,
00:44:37was doing that,
00:44:38there's an improvement,
00:44:38sector one,
00:44:39sector two,
00:44:40for Stroll,
00:44:41and then,
00:44:41the yellow flag,
00:44:42I believe,
00:44:42is Lewis Hamilton,
00:44:44who has gone around,
00:44:45middle part of the lap,
00:44:46not ideal,
00:44:47for Jack Doohan,
00:44:48now,
00:44:49coming to the line,
00:44:49there is Lewis Hamilton,
00:44:51facing the wrong way,
00:44:53coming out of turn 11,
00:44:54and that's gonna do,
00:44:55for Jack Doohan,
00:44:55who has just passed,
00:44:57Hamilton there,
00:44:58and was on a really,
00:44:58decent lap,
00:45:00and I don't think,
00:45:01Jack's gonna be able,
00:45:02to improve on this time,
00:45:04he flies past his teammate,
00:45:05who's back right off it,
00:45:06sounds like he's still,
00:45:06got his foot in,
00:45:07but,
00:45:08difficult to do that,
00:45:09when you've got a car,
00:45:09pointed the wrong way,
00:45:10Doohan goes across the line,
00:45:11giving his all,
00:45:12improves up to 13,
00:45:14that tells a tale,
00:45:15of what could have been,
00:45:16for him,
00:45:16Russell had to go,
00:45:17past that as well,
00:45:18as did Gasly,
00:45:19as did Charles Leclerc,
00:45:21and Oscar Piastri,
00:45:22as well,
00:45:23still fighting,
00:45:23and looking for a way through,
00:45:25Isaac Hadjar,
00:45:26Carlos Sainz,
00:45:27Alex Alvin,
00:45:28Hadjar in the drop zone,
00:45:29at the moment,
00:45:29the Frenchman,
00:45:30trying to climb,
00:45:31into the top 10 shootout,
00:45:32is this the lap to do so,
00:45:33no,
00:45:34misses out,
00:45:35by five hundredths of a second,
00:45:37it was his best lap,
00:45:38but it wasn't enough,
00:45:39Sainz,
00:45:39currently on the bubble,
00:45:41so it's only now,
00:45:42Fernando Alonso,
00:45:43who can improve on his time,
00:45:45he's out there,
00:45:45and in the middle sector,
00:45:47Albon is in ninth,
00:45:49Gasly is looking over his shoulder,
00:45:51Verstappen going fastest,
00:45:53but he is already,
00:45:54safely through,
00:45:55into the top 10 shootout,
00:45:56Gasly's going quickly as well,
00:45:57so it's Gasly,
00:45:58via Alonso,
00:45:59and if they both improve,
00:46:00then Albon's still in trouble,
00:46:01slide for Verstappen,
00:46:02as he's about to lay down,
00:46:03the latest gauntlet,
00:46:05purple sector one,
00:46:06sector two,
00:46:07going to be a rapid time,
00:46:08for Max Verstappen,
00:46:09who doesn't improve at the end there,
00:46:11well that was a shame,
00:46:12I've given him the big build up,
00:46:13never mind,
00:46:14Fernando Alonso,
00:46:15Pierre Gasly improving,
00:46:16in the second sector,
00:46:18let's see what he can do,
00:46:19across the line,
00:46:19Alonso only gets to 12th,
00:46:21frustrated,
00:46:22as he sees the readout,
00:46:23on the dash,
00:46:24there's nothing he can do now,
00:46:25and Gasly currently,
00:46:26in 10th position,
00:46:27has done well,
00:46:29to progress through there,
00:46:30has done well,
00:46:30to take his place,
00:46:31in the top 10 shootout,
00:46:33Alonso,
00:46:34couldn't get close enough,
00:46:36the top 10,
00:46:37separated,
00:46:38by,
00:46:39six tenths of a second,
00:46:41Lando Norris,
00:46:42is ahead of his teammate,
00:46:44Oscar Piastri,
00:46:45we have our top 10 set,
00:46:47this is the moment,
00:46:47that brought out the yellow flags,
00:46:48Lewis Hamilton in sixth,
00:46:49and round he went,
00:46:50he's aggressive on the throttle,
00:46:53trying to get on the gas,
00:46:55short burst up to turn 12,
00:46:57washed wide on the entry,
00:46:58running out of space,
00:46:59had plenty of steering lock,
00:47:00and I think just too much,
00:47:01right foot for Lewis,
00:47:02and then,
00:47:03you have the yellow flags,
00:47:04and I think Jack Doohan,
00:47:06was the main driver,
00:47:07that lost out there,
00:47:08he had done a really,
00:47:09decent first sector,
00:47:10he was quicker than Gasly,
00:47:11in Q1,
00:47:12but just,
00:47:13you can't improve,
00:47:15we're going to go on board,
00:47:16with Bartoleto,
00:47:18as he went over the kerb,
00:47:19and massive crusher there,
00:47:22full opposite lock,
00:47:23rally style,
00:47:24and gets away with it,
00:47:25it's a double win for him,
00:47:26isn't it,
00:47:26he's out qualified his teammate,
00:47:27and he's held this moment,
00:47:29in qualifying,
00:47:30and the car's back in one piece,
00:47:31that'll do,
00:47:34sorry about that guys,
00:47:38they're fine with it,
00:47:39when you don't make contact,
00:47:41with the barrier,
00:47:42oh a hairy moment,
00:47:43but one negotiated,
00:47:45so we have Norris,
00:47:46and Piastri,
00:47:47Verstappen and Russell,
00:47:49Charles Leclerc ahead,
00:47:50of Lewis Houghton,
00:47:51Sainz,
00:47:52Tsunoda,
00:47:53two Williams,
00:47:54with Alex Albon there as well,
00:47:56and Gasly,
00:47:57making his way through,
00:47:59Isaac Hadjar,
00:48:00getting close,
00:48:01five hundredths of a second,
00:48:02between Hadjar,
00:48:03and Q3 on debut,
00:48:06but he,
00:48:06will start,
00:48:07in 11th position,
00:48:08then Alonso,
00:48:09Stroll,
00:48:10Doohan,
00:48:11and Bortoleto,
00:48:12with that massive moment,
00:48:13the five to four,
00:48:14ahead,
00:48:14of the pole position,
00:48:15shooter,
00:48:16just looking at the way,
00:48:18the split times,
00:48:18are falling for us,
00:48:20as you said earlier Julian,
00:48:21McLaren,
00:48:22very strong,
00:48:23holding the tyres,
00:48:24all the way in that final sector,
00:48:26and crucially,
00:48:26Verstappen,
00:48:27who I don't think,
00:48:28was doing anything other than,
00:48:29trying to maximise that run,
00:48:31three tenths down,
00:48:32or just,
00:48:33just under three tenths down,
00:48:34in that final sector,
00:48:36he's running out of tyres,
00:48:37yeah we saw him didn't we,
00:48:38coming through the final corner,
00:48:39just lit it up,
00:48:40bit too much,
00:48:41coming out of turn 13,
00:48:42bit of spike of a,
00:48:43real rear wheel spin,
00:48:45and then you're trying to get it,
00:48:47into the final corner,
00:48:48and out of it,
00:48:49I think that's just,
00:48:50one of the issues they've got,
00:48:51in the high speed,
00:48:52McLaren are really good,
00:48:54through nine and ten,
00:48:54as well,
00:48:55and that's where they're taking time,
00:48:57on the rest of the field,
00:48:58it's close though,
00:49:00overall,
00:49:00because the Red Bull's good,
00:49:01in the straight line sector,
00:49:03in the middle part,
00:49:04coming up to nine and ten,
00:49:05it's a bit of a trade off,
00:49:07I still don't know if,
00:49:10is Russell out of this,
00:49:11are the Ferraris out,
00:49:12it seems like,
00:49:14they're falling away a bit,
00:49:15now McLaren are consistently,
00:49:16going up to the top,
00:49:17but they're not miles away,
00:49:18only a few tenths,
00:49:19just that final sector again,
00:49:21if they can find a way,
00:49:22to navigate the final few corners,
00:49:24then we may well see,
00:49:26McLaren challenged,
00:49:28but otherwise,
00:49:28it looks like it's,
00:49:29shut out between the two teammates,
00:49:32I feel it's really harsh,
00:49:34on doing this,
00:49:35this qualifying,
00:49:35I think,
00:49:36you know,
00:49:36we've all seen,
00:49:37that he's been right there,
00:49:38with Gasly the whole way through,
00:49:40but when he's got,
00:49:41the chat going around,
00:49:42at the moment,
00:49:43all the rumours,
00:49:44Colin Pinto there,
00:49:44and he's having to answer,
00:49:45these questions,
00:49:46it would have been nice,
00:49:46for him just to get a shot,
00:49:48at cleanly getting into Q3,
00:49:49because if he had done that,
00:49:50I think the conversation stopped,
00:49:52the stats will say,
00:49:53he's qualified 14th,
00:49:54which is not,
00:49:55a true reflection,
00:49:56of his pace today,
00:49:57you saw a graphic,
00:49:58there on your screen,
00:49:59the turn four incident,
00:50:00involving George Russell,
00:50:01and Charles Leclerc,
00:50:02has been noted,
00:50:03that,
00:50:04is for potentially impeding,
00:50:07I'm not sure we've seen that,
00:50:08on the broadcast,
00:50:09yet,
00:50:10but that is the,
00:50:11the state,
00:50:12of play,
00:50:13as it starts,
00:50:15you're looking down,
00:50:15into the Sauber garage,
00:50:17encouraging,
00:50:18to have a driver,
00:50:19of Hulkenberg's experience,
00:50:20with the team,
00:50:21and then,
00:50:22an exciting rookie,
00:50:24with the team,
00:50:25as well,
00:50:26if you're just joining,
00:50:28late to the broadcast,
00:50:29the story,
00:50:30of the qualifying hour,
00:50:31so far,
00:50:32Oliver Behrman,
00:50:33with an issue,
00:50:34with the gearbox,
00:50:35he was out,
00:50:35along with,
00:50:36Esther and Ocon,
00:50:37Liam Lawson,
00:50:38Hulkenberg,
00:50:38and Antonelli,
00:50:40and that,
00:50:41is,
00:50:42the moment,
00:50:43slight break up there,
00:50:44on our replay,
00:50:44let's look at it,
00:50:45track side,
00:50:46and,
00:50:47that's the potential,
00:50:48impeding incident,
00:50:50Jodin Palm's got a bit,
00:50:51of a sceptical face on it,
00:50:52let's see what he says about it,
00:50:53not for me,
00:50:54I mean he's going slow,
00:50:56he's right off the,
00:50:56off the racing line there,
00:50:58I think Charles,
00:50:58he obviously had,
00:50:59a bit of oversteer,
00:51:00getting on the throttle,
00:51:01coming out of turn three,
00:51:03he lost his lap time there,
00:51:04but I mean Russell's,
00:51:05right on the side of the track,
00:51:06unless he literally,
00:51:06drives off the track,
00:51:08there's nowhere else to go,
00:51:09it's new season,
00:51:10Stuart's just getting their eye in,
00:51:12just trying to figure out,
00:51:14where the limits are,
00:51:15I don't think we'll be seeing,
00:51:16any penalty for that one,
00:51:18no noted,
00:51:19and I don't think,
00:51:20it'll go any further,
00:51:21let's throw it to Alex Brundle,
00:51:22for a look,
00:51:23at Jack Doohan's,
00:51:24qualifying,
00:51:25on home soil,
00:51:27a pair of better sectors,
00:51:28for Jack Doohan,
00:51:29unfortunately caught out,
00:51:30by the yellow flag,
00:51:31for Lewis Hamilton,
00:51:32just confirming,
00:51:33the drivers,
00:51:34who passed by,
00:51:36this yellow flag,
00:51:37and therefore,
00:51:38were unable to improve,
00:51:39at the end of the session,
00:51:40Charles Leclerc is up the road,
00:51:42and it is Pierre Gasly,
00:51:44the only one of those drivers,
00:51:45who chose to continue,
00:51:47through to the line,
00:51:48was Jack Doohan,
00:51:50unable to improve,
00:51:51his qualifying time,
00:51:52as he went through a yellow flag,
00:51:53he's also duty bound,
00:51:55to show the stewards,
00:51:56as we know well,
00:51:57that he has,
00:51:59that he has lifted,
00:52:00and given up the time,
00:52:01the micro sectors,
00:52:02as he makes his way through,
00:52:03that portion,
00:52:05do go grave him,
00:52:06so he definitely,
00:52:07hasn't improved,
00:52:08it appears,
00:52:09moving through,
00:52:10that sector of the lap,
00:52:11but unfortunate,
00:52:12for Jack Doohan,
00:52:14when,
00:52:15he looked to be improving,
00:52:16but not enough,
00:52:17to get him through,
00:52:18to the final stage of qualifying.
00:52:20Sounded like he was,
00:52:21flat out,
00:52:22going past,
00:52:23Hamilton's car,
00:52:24I do,
00:52:24he must have lost time there,
00:52:26because the sectors before,
00:52:27were good,
00:52:28so I'm sure he's lost time,
00:52:29in turn 11,
00:52:30in the yellow flag zone,
00:52:31and that explains,
00:52:32why he's not only out,
00:52:33but four tenths away,
00:52:34from the next best car,
00:52:36I still think,
00:52:38he might have some explaining,
00:52:39to do,
00:52:40at going through there,
00:52:41it's desperation as well,
00:52:42when you're,
00:52:43you know you've got some pace,
00:52:44you're out in the drop zone,
00:52:46there's a yellow flag,
00:52:47you think,
00:52:47can I get away with it,
00:52:48can I try something,
00:52:50he's out,
00:52:51and,
00:52:52it's a learning curve,
00:52:53really as well.
00:52:55Yeah,
00:52:55must show the stewards,
00:52:56that you lifted,
00:52:56for the yellow flags,
00:52:58if not,
00:52:59as we saw,
00:52:59for Lando Norris,
00:53:01in Qatar,
00:53:02the back end of last year,
00:53:03they will hit you,
00:53:04with a penalty,
00:53:05as a result,
00:53:06so maybe something,
00:53:07for the stewards to look at,
00:53:08they've had a look,
00:53:09at Russell,
00:53:10and Leclerc,
00:53:11and decided,
00:53:11no further action,
00:53:12is required,
00:53:13so both move on happily,
00:53:15to the next stage,
00:53:16and the best stage,
00:53:17the Formula 1 qualifying,
00:53:18the top 10 shootout,
00:53:20we've got our top 10,
00:53:21for the weekend,
00:53:22Williams having a great weekend,
00:53:24Sainz pushing on Albon,
00:53:26they've got a new teammate,
00:53:27pairing there,
00:53:28which is providing us,
00:53:29with a story,
00:53:29Tsunoda is out qualified,
00:53:31he's rookie teammate,
00:53:32trying to get as high up,
00:53:33the order as possible,
00:53:34Charles Leclerc has been,
00:53:35the lead Ferrari driver,
00:53:36when it comes to the stopwatch,
00:53:37all the way through,
00:53:38but the knowledge,
00:53:39and experience,
00:53:39of Lewis Hamilton,
00:53:40is going to tell,
00:53:41at a venue,
00:53:42where he has been,
00:53:43an eight time pole position,
00:53:45holder,
00:53:45Norris,
00:53:46has never taken,
00:53:47pole position around here,
00:53:48Piastri's never taken,
00:53:49a pole position,
00:53:50in his Formula 1 career,
00:53:51this is the start,
00:53:52of his third season,
00:53:53Russell's been on the front row here,
00:53:55but never,
00:53:56at the very front,
00:53:57Charles Leclerc,
00:53:58Max Verstappen,
00:53:59they know that feeling,
00:54:00so does Lewis Hamilton,
00:54:02multiple contenders,
00:54:03for pole position,
00:54:04and if Mercedes,
00:54:05can get close,
00:54:06even if they're not,
00:54:06at the very front,
00:54:07this is a car,
00:54:08that last year,
00:54:09only really worked,
00:54:10in cool temperatures,
00:54:11track temperature,
00:54:12out there right now,
00:54:1341 degrees,
00:54:15air temperature,
00:54:1530 degrees,
00:54:16in Brussels competitive,
00:54:17a good sign,
00:54:18for the Mercedes team,
00:54:20yeah,
00:54:20but we do have,
00:54:20quite a lot of cloud cover,
00:54:22which may be,
00:54:22teeing us up,
00:54:23for the projected rain,
00:54:24of tomorrow,
00:54:25and it just takes,
00:54:27that little bit,
00:54:27of cloud cover,
00:54:28and even if the track,
00:54:30temperature remains the same,
00:54:31it definitely,
00:54:32gives you a little bit,
00:54:33of performance,
00:54:34it looked to be,
00:54:35new tires,
00:54:36immediately out,
00:54:36for Russell,
00:54:37but it looked like,
00:54:38the Ferrari had gone out,
00:54:39in a set of scrubs,
00:54:40Hamilton has,
00:54:41Leclerc's out on you,
00:54:42and that's because,
00:54:43Hamilton had to use one,
00:54:44in Q1,
00:54:45looks pretty dark,
00:54:49Gasly likes a bit of drama,
00:54:50it looks a bit dark,
00:54:52yeah,
00:54:52well,
00:54:53Q the engineer,
00:54:53to say to him,
00:54:54we'll get a move on then,
00:54:55if you can say,
00:54:56I'm just going to rain,
00:54:58Gasly playing his part,
00:54:59in the show there,
00:55:00it is still,
00:55:01a lovely day,
00:55:03in Melbourne,
00:55:03looking out of our,
00:55:04commentary box window,
00:55:05it is more overcast,
00:55:06than before,
00:55:07but no rain,
00:55:08in the air,
00:55:09Oscar Piastri,
00:55:10trying to give,
00:55:12the hundreds of thousands,
00:55:13that line this circuit,
00:55:15capacity,
00:55:16crowd around this circuit,
00:55:18something to cheer about,
00:55:19a moment,
00:55:20that they will remember,
00:55:22tomorrow is expected,
00:55:23to be wet,
00:55:23but in the dry,
00:55:24can this lap,
00:55:25give himself an opportunity,
00:55:27for a foundation,
00:55:28for a first ever,
00:55:29Formula One Grand Prix pole,
00:55:30very neat and tidy so far,
00:55:32through four corners,
00:55:34the traction he had,
00:55:35as he jumped on the gas hard,
00:55:36coming out of turn one,
00:55:37was very impressive,
00:55:38comes through turn six,
00:55:40now he's got to stretch his legs,
00:55:42all the way up,
00:55:42lakeside drive,
00:55:43up towards turn nine,
00:55:44and the high speed,
00:55:45we know,
00:55:46that the Red Bull is good,
00:55:47in the middle sector,
00:55:48it's anyone's game,
00:55:49in the first,
00:55:50the McLarens,
00:55:50got to make use of their strength,
00:55:52in the final sector,
00:55:52and that's where Piastri,
00:55:53is coming to right now,
00:55:54yeah,
00:55:55Niffin Turk,
00:55:55between the two McLarens,
00:55:57in that first sector,
00:55:58Norris just marginally ahead,
00:55:59let's see how it compares,
00:56:01traffic getting out of the way,
00:56:03and even still,
00:56:04it's slight advantage,
00:56:06Norris,
00:56:07that close enough,
00:56:08that either,
00:56:09either mistake,
00:56:10from the drivers,
00:56:11will decide this one,
00:56:12Russell has the fastest,
00:56:14first sector,
00:56:14Leclerc has the fastest,
00:56:16middle sector,
00:56:16Verstappen,
00:56:17oh,
00:56:17big moment there,
00:56:19coming through,
00:56:20the 40,
00:56:21into the 14th corner,
00:56:23for Oscar Piastri,
00:56:24and he was all over the road,
00:56:25to lose time,
00:56:26that won't be ideal,
00:56:27what can Lando Norris do,
00:56:29he's coming through,
00:56:29turn 14 now,
00:56:31big opportunity,
00:56:32for the two McLarens,
00:56:33but others are bringing,
00:56:34the pressure behind,
00:56:35Norris unsurprisingly,
00:56:37goes ahead,
00:56:38of Oscar Piastri,
00:56:39and now we're on board,
00:56:40with Charles Leclerc,
00:56:42fastest middle sector,
00:56:43of anyone so far,
00:56:44he goes to the top,
00:56:45of the times,
00:56:45with a roasting final sector,
00:56:47nicely done,
00:56:48for Charles Leclerc,
00:56:49but there's more,
00:56:49out there to come,
00:56:50Norris made a mistake,
00:56:51as well,
00:56:52he's lost his lap time,
00:56:53because he went off,
00:56:53at turn four,
00:56:54so both McLarens,
00:56:55pushing so hard,
00:56:56and they're off,
00:56:57Russell gets,
00:56:58to provisional pole position,
00:57:00the Mercedes man,
00:57:01hits the front,
00:57:02Hamilton will respond,
00:57:03he's in fourth,
00:57:05but look at,
00:57:05who's going rapidly,
00:57:06right now,
00:57:08Max Verstappen,
00:57:09is so quick,
00:57:11sector one,
00:57:12sector two,
00:57:13across the line,
00:57:14he comes,
00:57:14and the reigning world champion,
00:57:17has done it,
00:57:17by two hundredths,
00:57:18of a second,
00:57:20you can see,
00:57:21that confirmation,
00:57:22of track limits,
00:57:24for Norris,
00:57:25so that piles on,
00:57:26the pressure,
00:57:27that is impressive,
00:57:28for Verstappen,
00:57:29but it's still so close,
00:57:31if McLaren,
00:57:31get a clean run,
00:57:32I think they've got the pace,
00:57:34it's not as quick,
00:57:34as Max went,
00:57:35in Q2,
00:57:36let alone the McLarens,
00:57:37that were one and two,
00:57:38so there's definitely,
00:57:39more in there,
00:57:40for everyone,
00:57:41the field,
00:57:41look at the front,
00:57:42Verstappen,
00:57:43Russell and Leclerc,
00:57:44three different,
00:57:45constructors,
00:57:47separated by less than a tenth,
00:57:48and we haven't even got,
00:57:49McLaren,
00:57:49who we know,
00:57:50could be in there as well,
00:57:52this is going to be Norris,
00:57:52coming through turn four,
00:57:55clearly over,
00:57:56way over,
00:57:57that's another one,
00:57:58that there's no advantage,
00:57:59quite clearly,
00:58:00the weight lane,
00:58:01is beyond track limits,
00:58:02but no advantage there,
00:58:03touch of the gravel,
00:58:04exit turn six,
00:58:06I've got no request,
00:58:08so far,
00:58:08so double checks please,
00:58:10yep,
00:58:11we will do,
00:58:11in the turn four one,
00:58:14look the bigger exit curve hit,
00:58:15for Norris,
00:58:16this is Piastri,
00:58:17who looks so good,
00:58:18coming through turns 11 and 12,
00:58:20and he just washes wide at 13,
00:58:22it's a difficult corner,
00:58:23the final left-hander,
00:58:24that you need to just get the car slowed,
00:58:27you bring it to the right,
00:58:28it all comes in a flash,
00:58:29and he didn't get the deceleration,
00:58:31that he needed,
00:58:32just washed towards the grass,
00:58:33couldn't get on the power,
00:58:34on the exit,
00:58:35and as we look here,
00:58:38with the cloud cover,
00:58:39you'd see this was actually,
00:58:40playing into those,
00:58:41who run out of the tyres,
00:58:42towards the end of the lap,
00:58:44but scrappy laps for all,
00:58:47and let's see,
00:58:48who can pull together,
00:58:50the perfect lap,
00:58:51there's another two,
00:58:52three tenths to come,
00:58:53if they do,
00:58:54and bigger picture here,
00:58:56McLaren,
00:58:57were chasers last year,
00:58:59this year they've turned up,
00:59:00with the favourites tag on them,
00:59:01they've been one two,
00:59:02in Q2,
00:59:04they've looked,
00:59:05slightly the strongest of the field,
00:59:07even if it's tight margins,
00:59:08and they're both very close,
00:59:09to each other as well,
00:59:10Piastri and Norris,
00:59:11so they know,
00:59:12they need the last hundredths,
00:59:13and they're carrying,
00:59:14a little bit more pressure,
00:59:15because of the favourites tag,
00:59:17I think that's shown,
00:59:17on the first run there,
00:59:19yeah I think that's a good point,
00:59:20and you can see,
00:59:21as Max glanced over,
00:59:23at the screens,
00:59:24he's feeling the pressure as well,
00:59:25right on the edge,
00:59:26of going beyond that track limit,
00:59:29scrappy lap from him,
00:59:30on board,
00:59:31you'll be able to see here,
00:59:32a bit of understeer,
00:59:33drags them wide,
00:59:35yes there's more in there,
00:59:36for Verstappen as well,
00:59:37he still has the fastest,
00:59:39first sector,
00:59:39even with that,
00:59:40so it didn't cost him too much,
00:59:41but certainly not,
00:59:42the optimum way through,
00:59:44so what is this telling us,
00:59:46what is it,
00:59:47it's just that it's so difficult,
00:59:49for them to get,
00:59:50the peak of performance,
00:59:51over an entire lap,
00:59:53we haven't seen anyone really,
00:59:54ace of beauty,
00:59:55I thought Piastri,
00:59:57was going to do that,
00:59:58on the way that he came through,
00:59:59the first two sectors,
01:00:00were very tidy,
01:00:01and then he came through,
01:00:0211 and 12,
01:00:03and it looked,
01:00:04pretty much perfect,
01:00:05the way that he was driving,
01:00:06smoothness behind the wheel,
01:00:07but it's just difficult,
01:00:09when you know,
01:00:10you're looking for hundreds,
01:00:11the performance has to be 100%,
01:00:13you can't drive at 99 point anything,
01:00:16and you know,
01:00:17there are raised curbs,
01:00:18there are so many things,
01:00:18if this was a Bahrain,
01:00:20or you know,
01:00:20less punishing circuits,
01:00:22you can run wide,
01:00:23you can miss an apex slightly,
01:00:24and it would just cost you,
01:00:25a bit of lap time,
01:00:26but here you find the gravel,
01:00:28you find some raised curbs,
01:00:29and it's even harder,
01:00:31to put it together,
01:00:32this is the definition,
01:00:34of pressure,
01:00:35Gustafsson hasn't done,
01:00:36a completely clean lap,
01:00:37Russell hasn't,
01:00:38Leclerc hasn't,
01:00:39none of them have,
01:00:42and this is Lewis Hamilton,
01:00:44into turn,
01:00:4511,
01:00:45going wide,
01:00:46brushing the gravel,
01:00:47at a part of the circuit,
01:00:48you don't want to,
01:00:49and the time,
01:00:50ebbing away,
01:00:51as a result,
01:00:52after run one,
01:00:53he's behind Alex Albon,
01:00:55in the Williams,
01:00:55he's behind Yuki Tsunoda,
01:00:57in the racing ball,
01:00:58finding understeer again,
01:01:00at turn 11,
01:01:00had the spin there,
01:01:01at the end of Q2,
01:01:03that's why Hamilton's,
01:01:04a bit further down,
01:01:05another one,
01:01:06that needs to just,
01:01:07put a tidy lap together,
01:01:08Leclerc's right there,
01:01:09in the hunt for pole,
01:01:10and the McLarens,
01:01:11will feel pressure,
01:01:11because also,
01:01:12we think,
01:01:14we thought they would have,
01:01:14the qualifying pace,
01:01:15but we think they might,
01:01:16the race pace,
01:01:16but it's going to rain tomorrow,
01:01:19if Verstappen starts at the front,
01:01:20and is wet,
01:01:21that's a big chance,
01:01:22for him to,
01:01:23to take,
01:01:25the opening Grand Prix,
01:01:25so the dynamic,
01:01:27is absolutely fascinating here,
01:01:29McLaren have seemed to have,
01:01:30the most balanced car,
01:01:31across pre-season testing,
01:01:32and heading into the final runs,
01:01:34but the first runs,
01:01:35for both Norris,
01:01:36and Piastri,
01:01:37have not gone to plan,
01:01:38Piastri,
01:01:39running out of rear tire grip,
01:01:41in the penultimate corner,
01:01:42on the exit,
01:01:43of the penultimate corner,
01:01:44of the racetrack,
01:01:45Norris,
01:01:45going all four wheels,
01:01:47beyond the white line,
01:01:49to get his time,
01:01:49deleted,
01:01:50for track limits,
01:01:51your front row,
01:01:51for the opening Grand Prix,
01:01:52of the year,
01:01:53provisionally,
01:01:53is Max Verstappen,
01:01:55next to George Russell,
01:01:56the best of friends,
01:01:57starting at the front,
01:01:58as it stands,
01:02:00Charles Leclerc,
01:02:01has fancied his chances,
01:02:02of pole position,
01:02:03even last night,
01:02:05he was happy,
01:02:05with the overall balance,
01:02:06he is a master,
01:02:08of unlocking,
01:02:09Q3 pace,
01:02:10when it matters,
01:02:11he is chasing,
01:02:12his 27th career pole,
01:02:14for McLaren,
01:02:15they've got the car,
01:02:16they've had a dress rehearsal,
01:02:18they claim,
01:02:18the constructors championship,
01:02:20these are the moments,
01:02:22that decide,
01:02:23drivers championships,
01:02:24are you going to start 10th,
01:02:26are you going to beat them all,
01:02:27and make your way to pole,
01:02:28but you can't be cautious now,
01:02:30Norris has the best lap,
01:02:31of the weekend,
01:02:32it's a quarter of a second,
01:02:33quicker than what Verstappen,
01:02:34is provisionally on pole,
01:02:35with right now,
01:02:36so he's done that in Q2,
01:02:38you have to go,
01:02:39for the pole position,
01:02:40if you're in a McLaren,
01:02:41right now,
01:02:41it's capable of it,
01:02:43Lando's capable of it,
01:02:44so is Oscar,
01:02:45both of them,
01:02:46are right in this hunt,
01:02:47if you start to be cautious,
01:02:49the field's too close,
01:02:49you might not be on the second row,
01:02:51can you imagine,
01:02:52the sort of little voice,
01:02:53in their heads,
01:02:54as they're sitting in the garage,
01:02:55playing through,
01:02:55what they know they can do,
01:02:57but as you've just said,
01:02:58they've got to push the boundaries,
01:03:00if they want this pole position,
01:03:01that's why I think,
01:03:02this is the ultimate,
01:03:04definition and expression,
01:03:05and sure,
01:03:06of dealing with pressure,
01:03:08Albert Park roars,
01:03:10for Oscar Piastri,
01:03:12I've never heard a crowd,
01:03:13cheer a driver like that,
01:03:14out of the final corner,
01:03:16around this racetrack,
01:03:17unless they're winning,
01:03:18this is just qualifying,
01:03:19Piastri looking,
01:03:21for what he couldn't find,
01:03:22last time out,
01:03:23for 14 perfect corners,
01:03:25to give himself a chance,
01:03:27of our first ever,
01:03:28Formula One Grand Prix pole,
01:03:30and on home soil as well,
01:03:32it's looking clean,
01:03:33it's looking neat,
01:03:34it's looking tidy,
01:03:35but let's look to the stopwatch,
01:03:36is it looking quick,
01:03:37it's enough,
01:03:38he's in the ballpark,
01:03:39yeah,
01:03:40he's in the mix,
01:03:40and he's very neatly,
01:03:41through turn six as well,
01:03:43now he's coming down,
01:03:44lakeside drive,
01:03:45building the speed,
01:03:46and all focus is going to be,
01:03:47on that final sector,
01:03:48where McLaren are good,
01:03:49look at Norris,
01:03:50even quicker,
01:03:51than Piastri,
01:03:51through the first sector,
01:03:52of the racetrack,
01:03:53throw it into nine and ten,
01:03:56amazing speed,
01:03:57and direction change,
01:03:58and nowhere near,
01:03:59the exit curve,
01:04:00he's going for efficiency,
01:04:02can he keep the tyres in,
01:04:03will he have the grip,
01:04:05Norris is up,
01:04:06by three hundredths of a second,
01:04:07rotating through turn eleven,
01:04:09goes Piastri,
01:04:11just a couple of corners to go,
01:04:12can he find a clean route,
01:04:13through this time,
01:04:15the home favourite,
01:04:16looking to bring,
01:04:17the crowd to their feet,
01:04:19there's never been,
01:04:20an Australian driver,
01:04:21on pole position,
01:04:22for the Australian Grand Prix,
01:04:24can he change all of that,
01:04:25he can,
01:04:27with a monster final sector,
01:04:29over to you,
01:04:30Lando Norris,
01:04:31over to you,
01:04:32Max Verstappen,
01:04:33and George Russell,
01:04:34can Norris take it away,
01:04:35he does,
01:04:36by eight hundredths of a second,
01:04:39big pressure lap,
01:04:40when it counted,
01:04:41and now,
01:04:42Verstappen,
01:04:43has to find a response,
01:04:45two corners to go,
01:04:47the reigning world champion,
01:04:48trying to break the hearts,
01:04:50of those,
01:04:51dressed in papaya,
01:04:52Norris,
01:04:53ahead of Piastri,
01:04:54third place for Russell,
01:04:55does Verstappen,
01:04:56have a reply,
01:04:58no,
01:04:59it's a personal best,
01:05:00in the final sector,
01:05:01but only,
01:05:02third position,
01:05:04Lewis Hamilton,
01:05:05currently down to eighth,
01:05:06Charles Leclerc,
01:05:07his teammate,
01:05:07is in fifth,
01:05:08it's Pierre Gasly,
01:05:10who manages to move,
01:05:11to sixth position,
01:05:12Albon is on,
01:05:14in seventh,
01:05:14personal best for everyone,
01:05:16in the bottom five right now,
01:05:17track is rubbed in,
01:05:18track is gripping up,
01:05:19can Hamilton,
01:05:20get on terms with his teammate,
01:05:22who's still in the pit lane,
01:05:24Leclerc,
01:05:24is not,
01:05:25going to be the second Ferrari,
01:05:26on the grid,
01:05:27Lewis Hamilton,
01:05:28can't get past,
01:05:29Charles Leclerc,
01:05:30who's going to win,
01:05:31the battle,
01:05:32of the two Williams cars now,
01:05:34Sainz gets ahead of Albon,
01:05:36but Albon,
01:05:37is a few meters back,
01:05:39this battle,
01:05:40between the two of them,
01:05:41what's it going to give us,
01:05:42Albon to fifth,
01:05:44what a fantastic lap,
01:05:46at the last,
01:05:47from the tie driver,
01:05:48who out qualifies,
01:05:49his new teammates,
01:05:50and after all,
01:05:52of the drama,
01:05:53of the opening runs,
01:05:55it looked like,
01:05:55it might be Verstappen,
01:05:56and Russell,
01:05:57on the front row,
01:05:58but on the second tour,
01:06:00it was Piastri,
01:06:01who brought the roar,
01:06:02it's Lando Norris,
01:06:04who takes the opening,
01:06:05poll of the year,
01:06:06then it's Oscar Piastri,
01:06:08Max Verstappen,
01:06:09George Russell,
01:06:10and Yuki Tsunoda,
01:06:12puts a racing ball,
01:06:13fifth on the grid,
01:06:15then it's Albon,
01:06:16the Ferraris,
01:06:18thought they could fight,
01:06:18for poll,
01:06:19they're seventh and eighth,
01:06:20for the opening Grand Prix,
01:06:21of the year,
01:06:22Gasly,
01:06:23and Sainz,
01:06:24ninth and tenth,
01:06:25okay,
01:06:26that is poll,
01:06:28not a bad way,
01:06:29to start the year,
01:06:30well done everyone,
01:06:31unbelievable car,
01:06:33amazing work,
01:06:34all winter,
01:06:35thank you so much,
01:06:37let's keep it up baby,
01:06:43well,
01:06:43the man on poll,
01:06:44once again,
01:06:45Lando Norris,
01:06:46gets there,
01:06:47for the tenth time,
01:06:48in his Formula One,
01:06:48career,
01:06:50and there's a statement,
01:06:50in that Jolin,
01:06:51he was on the back foot,
01:06:52after run one,
01:06:53needed a fast lap,
01:06:54he's beaten his teammate,
01:06:56by less than a tenth,
01:06:57of a second,
01:06:58and it's an all papaya,
01:07:00front row,
01:07:01to start the year,
01:07:02the world championship team,
01:07:04on top,
01:07:05I think they might,
01:07:05have been hiding,
01:07:06haven't they,
01:07:07for three test days,
01:07:09and a practice day,
01:07:10and they've unleashed,
01:07:11something,
01:07:12under huge pressure,
01:07:13Zac Brown all cheers,
01:07:14and it's,
01:07:16it's a huge result,
01:07:17this for McLaren,
01:07:17because they could have,
01:07:19thrown this one away,
01:07:20halfway through Q3,
01:07:21and they were nowhere,
01:07:22near contention,
01:07:23both drivers,
01:07:24under massive pressure,
01:07:25and they've blitzed,
01:07:26the field in the end,
01:07:27nearly four tenths,
01:07:28quicker than Verstappen,
01:07:29sandbags are out,
01:07:30McLaren are the team,
01:07:31to be in 2025,
01:07:34they showed their hand,
01:07:35at the last,
01:07:36Oscar Piastri's,
01:07:37wait for a Formula 1 poll,
01:07:39continues,
01:07:40and now,
01:07:41it's seven front rows,
01:07:43in Formula 1,
01:07:45without starting,
01:07:46in the first slot,
01:07:46he's eight metres back,
01:07:47from his team mate,
01:07:49smiles,
01:07:50for young and old,
01:07:51in the McLaren team,
01:07:54they are delighted,
01:07:56having converted,
01:07:57the promise,
01:07:58into a front row lockout,
01:07:59I can tell you,
01:08:00looking at the record books,
01:08:01it's the 66th time,
01:08:03in Formula 1 history,
01:08:04that they have locked out,
01:08:05the front row,
01:08:06Piastri,
01:08:07the roar they gave him,
01:08:08round the 14th,
01:08:09and final turn,
01:08:10to begin that lap,
01:08:11just sums up,
01:08:12where Formula 1 is,
01:08:13at the moment,
01:08:14support for everyone,
01:08:15and this great event,
01:08:16can carry on,
01:08:17the home fans,
01:08:18Jolien,
01:08:19will wander through the gates tomorrow,
01:08:20whether it be dry,
01:08:21whether it be wet,
01:08:22they know,
01:08:23there's a chance,
01:08:24Oscar can be,
01:08:25the first Australian,
01:08:25to win,
01:08:26the Australian Grand Prix,
01:08:27there's not much,
01:08:28to separate them,
01:08:29and it hasn't been,
01:08:29all weekend,
01:08:30Piastri and Norris,
01:08:31they'll start on the front row together,
01:08:33it's a hot day,
01:08:34can't you,
01:08:34Lando looks like,
01:08:35he's had to really work,
01:08:36for that one,
01:08:36and a great job,
01:08:38from both,
01:08:38and for Max Verstappen,
01:08:39to be in third,
01:08:40and get himself,
01:08:41into contention tomorrow,
01:08:42as well,
01:08:42it's 31 degrees out there,
01:08:44it's overcast,
01:08:45and it got more overcast,
01:08:47before the final runs,
01:08:48but it's still,
01:08:4931 degrees,
01:08:50the balaclava,
01:08:51the hands device,
01:08:52the fireproof overalls,
01:08:54sweaty workout,
01:08:54the temperature's,
01:08:56ramped up,
01:08:56by about 3 degrees,
01:08:58air temperature,
01:08:59and I think,
01:08:59that's why,
01:08:59it was difficult,
01:09:00for anyone,
01:09:00to put a whole lap,
01:09:01together at the end,
01:09:02of that session,
01:09:03Ferrari will be,
01:09:04so disappointed,
01:09:06with that,
01:09:07Leclerc not getting,
01:09:07out at the end,
01:09:08Hamilton not beating him,
01:09:107th and 8th,
01:09:11it's miserable,
01:09:12for the star studded team,
01:09:14yeah wonderful driver pairing,
01:09:16Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton,
01:09:18but that is not,
01:09:19where they wanted to be,
01:09:20and imagine,
01:09:21telling Ferrari yesterday,
01:09:22you're going to be behind,
01:09:23Yuki Tsunoda,
01:09:23and Alex Albon,
01:09:24on merit,
01:09:26at the end,
01:09:27in a dry session,
01:09:29that shows you,
01:09:30what about the motivation,
01:09:31for Yuki,
01:09:32passed over,
01:09:33by the senior team,
01:09:34Liam Lawson,
01:09:35will start this Grand Prix,
01:09:3618th on the grid,
01:09:37Yuki Tsunoda,
01:09:38top five,
01:09:39who needs to go to Red Bull,
01:09:42I always wonder,
01:09:43is the Racing Bull,
01:09:44a better car,
01:09:45than the Red Bull,
01:09:46Tsunoda's qualified,
01:09:46within two tenths of Verstappen,
01:09:48would he be,
01:09:49within two tenths of Verstappen,
01:09:51if he was in the Red Bull,
01:09:52would Lawson be better off,
01:09:53if he was in the Racing Bull,
01:09:54again now,
01:09:55it's such a weird,
01:09:57quirk,
01:09:58the second Red Bull seat,
01:09:59and the gap,
01:10:00between,
01:10:01the Red Bull,
01:10:01and the Racing Bull now,
01:10:04the golf buggy,
01:10:05is heading down,
01:10:07to the media centre,
01:10:08which isn't that far away,
01:10:09but,
01:10:09I appreciate the efforts,
01:10:11from,
01:10:12our top three,
01:10:13and they don't want to,
01:10:14wander down,
01:10:15not when the temperature is,
01:10:1732 out there,
01:10:19this is the,
01:10:20the pit building,
01:10:21you can see all the temporary,
01:10:22hospitality behind,
01:10:23and the golf buggy,
01:10:25is making its way to,
01:10:26underneath the podium,
01:10:28and in the media centres,
01:10:29on the left hand side,
01:10:30that's where they're heading to,
01:10:31to what is quite a snug,
01:10:32press conference room,
01:10:33if it kicks off,
01:10:34it's quite a snug,
01:10:35press conference room,
01:10:35can be a bit awkward in there,
01:10:37no one's going to be,
01:10:38unhappy,
01:10:38there you go,
01:10:39it wasn't a long journey,
01:10:40but it's a journey,
01:10:40they'll be happy to make,
01:10:42tenth career pole,
01:10:43for Lando Norris,
01:10:44speaking to his friend,
01:10:45Max Verstappen,
01:10:46Verstappen again,
01:10:47taking a car that,
01:10:48could have really been in trouble,
01:10:50to,
01:10:51the second row,
01:10:53and,
01:10:54his ability to do that,
01:10:55last year,
01:10:56to turn what could have been,
01:10:57a P10 on the grid,
01:10:58to a,
01:10:59to a strong position,
01:11:00is the reason,
01:11:00that he is the reigning world champion,
01:11:02and denied,
01:11:03Lando Norris,
01:11:04who was the runner up,
01:11:06Piastri,
01:11:07out qualified,
01:11:08significantly,
01:11:09last year,
01:11:10in the world championship,
01:11:11in the head to head,
01:11:12he was,
01:11:13four times the lead,
01:11:14McLaren on the grid,
01:11:14Norris,
01:11:1520 times the lead car,
01:11:16on the grid,
01:11:17and he's just back,
01:11:18eight hundredths of a second,
01:11:19this time,
01:11:19and it was offered,
01:11:20small margins as well,
01:11:21last year,
01:11:21wasn't it,
01:11:22but that's been,
01:11:23where the,
01:11:23the tilt has been,
01:11:25towards Norris,
01:11:26and he takes the,
01:11:26the first blow,
01:11:27but both of these,
01:11:28McLaren drivers,
01:11:29will be thinking,
01:11:29this is such a chance,
01:11:32okay,
01:11:32Naomi Schiff,
01:11:33has made her way,
01:11:34down into Park FermΓ©,
01:11:35we are going to hear,
01:11:36from our top three,
01:11:38Max congratulations,
01:11:40it's P3 this time around,
01:11:41big turnaround,
01:11:42from yesterday,
01:11:43how are you feeling,
01:11:44with that performance?
01:11:45Yeah,
01:11:45it was good,
01:11:46I mean,
01:11:47yesterday was quite tough,
01:11:48so for us to be,
01:11:49in P3 today,
01:11:51I take that,
01:11:52so yeah,
01:11:53the quality laps,
01:11:54are very exciting,
01:11:54I think,
01:11:55a lot of,
01:11:56yeah,
01:11:56good grip around here,
01:11:58and some fast corners,
01:11:59so that's always very fun,
01:12:00in an F1 car.
01:12:02Well,
01:12:02we heard you talking,
01:12:03a little bit about,
01:12:03tires overheating,
01:12:04how much of a compromise,
01:12:05was that for you,
01:12:06out there today?
01:12:07Yeah,
01:12:07it was quite tough,
01:12:08and qualifying,
01:12:09yeah,
01:12:11I don't know,
01:12:11of course,
01:12:11how the others felt,
01:12:12but for me,
01:12:12it never felt like,
01:12:14we nailed that bit,
01:12:14but,
01:12:15another hand,
01:12:16I think the gap,
01:12:16was quite big to them,
01:12:17so it wouldn't have mattered,
01:12:19in terms of position.
01:12:21Okay,
01:12:21well we hear that,
01:12:22there's going to be rain tomorrow,
01:12:23will you be doing the rain dance,
01:12:24or will you prefer,
01:12:25it to be dry tomorrow?
01:12:26No,
01:12:26for me it's fine,
01:12:27dry or wet,
01:12:28of course,
01:12:29in the wet,
01:12:29there are always some crazy things,
01:12:31that can happen,
01:12:32and especially around here,
01:12:33it can be quite slippery,
01:12:34I think,
01:12:35but it's,
01:12:36yeah,
01:12:36same for everyone ride,
01:12:37so we'll see what happens tomorrow.
01:12:39Okay,
01:12:39well good luck,
01:12:40enjoy it out there.
01:12:46Oscar,
01:12:57massive congratulations,
01:12:59it's a front row start,
01:13:00and all McLaren front row,
01:13:01how are you feeling,
01:13:02having done that at home,
01:13:03for the first time?
01:13:05Yeah,
01:13:05pretty happy,
01:13:06it's obviously great,
01:13:07to start the year,
01:13:08on the front row,
01:13:09probably one position,
01:13:11further back,
01:13:11that I would have liked,
01:13:12but no,
01:13:13I think it's a great start,
01:13:14to the year,
01:13:14and great to have the team,
01:13:16on the front row,
01:13:16so now we're reset,
01:13:18and see what tomorrow,
01:13:19has in store,
01:13:20but no,
01:13:21pretty happy,
01:13:22with how qualifying went,
01:13:22just not quite enough,
01:13:24in Q3,
01:13:25but it's the start,
01:13:27of a long season,
01:13:27so I'm pretty happy,
01:13:29with a solid start.
01:13:30The margins out there,
01:13:32have been so,
01:13:32so,
01:13:32so close,
01:13:33it was less than,
01:13:34a chance between you,
01:13:35and Lando,
01:13:37a bit of sound issues,
01:13:38is there?
01:13:38What did,
01:13:39what did it come down to,
01:13:40where were the little seconds left?
01:13:43I mean,
01:13:44I think it's probably,
01:13:44a little bit,
01:13:45in a couple of places,
01:13:46I think the sector three,
01:13:47I lost a little bit of time,
01:13:49compared to the lap before,
01:13:50from Q2,
01:13:51and I also locked up there,
01:13:53and went off in the first run,
01:13:55of Q3,
01:13:56so I didn't really want,
01:13:56to do that twice,
01:13:57and yeah,
01:13:58maybe left it a little bit,
01:13:59on the table,
01:13:59but I think it was pretty tricky,
01:14:01out there for everybody,
01:14:02Q3 at the start,
01:14:03looked pretty messy,
01:14:03so I'm just happy,
01:14:05to be on the front row,
01:14:06and have a good start,
01:14:07okay,
01:14:08congratulations,
01:14:08well done,
01:14:09thank you,
01:14:10cheers,
01:14:10cheers,
01:14:10Lando,
01:14:16a massive congratulations,
01:14:17you are our first,
01:14:18poll sitter of 2025,
01:14:19how does that feel,
01:14:20in this moment?
01:14:21Thank you,
01:14:21yeah,
01:14:22very good,
01:14:22I mean it's the perfect way,
01:14:24to start the year,
01:14:25you know,
01:14:25so I mean first of all,
01:14:27a big congrats to the team,
01:14:28everyone at McLaren,
01:14:29has done an amazing job,
01:14:31to continue from where we were,
01:14:32at the end of last season,
01:14:33to start with a one two,
01:14:34but it's just quality right,
01:14:36so let's wait and see tomorrow,
01:14:38I know it's going to be,
01:14:38a tricky race,
01:14:40but today was a perfect way,
01:14:41to start.
01:14:42We saw that the conditions,
01:14:43out there were tricky,
01:14:44drivers going off the track,
01:14:45going over curbs,
01:14:46how hard was it,
01:14:47to put it all together,
01:14:48with the margins being so fine?
01:14:50Very,
01:14:51I mean you know,
01:14:52the team has done such a good,
01:14:53the car is extremely quick,
01:14:55and when you put it together,
01:14:56it's unbelievable,
01:14:57it's just difficult,
01:14:58to put it together,
01:15:00so really it was like,
01:15:01a little fight between me,
01:15:02and Oscar today,
01:15:03and it was a tough one,
01:15:05and especially after my first lap,
01:15:07where I went off,
01:15:07and got track limits,
01:15:08then I knew the second lap,
01:15:09you're in a tough position,
01:15:11you need to take a lot of risk,
01:15:13but you also need to make sure,
01:15:14you get the lap clean,
01:15:15and don't make any mistakes,
01:15:16so it's a difficult mindset,
01:15:18to go into the final lap,
01:15:19but I managed to pull it off,
01:15:21so I'm very happy.
01:15:22Well tomorrow's another day,
01:15:23we don't know what the weather's,
01:15:24going to do just yet,
01:15:25but how confident are you,
01:15:26that you might be standing,
01:15:27on the top step of the podium tomorrow?
01:15:30I mean I'm never going,
01:15:31to get ahead of myself,
01:15:32I'm not that kind of guy,
01:15:32so you know,
01:15:33I'm confident that the car's,
01:15:34in a great position,
01:15:35but we've also never run in the wet,
01:15:37we know how quick Max is,
01:15:39and Red Bull is in the rain,
01:15:41so let's wait and see,
01:15:43many opportunities for everyone,
01:15:46but also a lot of new things,
01:15:47that we're going to be learning,
01:15:48along the way,
01:15:48so we'll see you tomorrow.
01:15:50Okay, fantastical,
01:15:51big congratulations once again.

01:16:57getting used to this feeling,
01:16:58coming into his second year,
01:17:01as a championship contender,
01:17:05and they're asking,
01:17:08what's he's bought,
01:17:09getting the answer,
01:17:13and getting everything present,
01:17:16and correct for the photos,
01:17:30here's the moment,
01:17:31the team saw,
01:17:33that 8 hundredths of a second,
01:17:35ahead of Oscar Piastri,
01:17:39was Lando Norris,
01:17:40second place in the world championship,
01:17:41last year,
01:17:42and just enough,
01:17:43the pole position time,
01:17:44a 1.15.096,
01:17:48good enough,

01:17:51on the grid,
01:17:51for what could be,
01:17:52an entirely different city tomorrow,
