00:00My name is Clara and I'm 20 years old.
00:02I grew up in Copenhagen and I have always lived here.
00:06And today I'm going to show you a day in my life.
00:10Hi, come on in and I'll show you where I live.
00:12Our living room.
00:13I'm living with my little brother and my mom and my dad.
00:17And we have lived in this apartment for my whole life.
00:20Lots of wood, light and cozy furnishings are part of a Danish way of life called hygge.
00:25This is my room where I can totally relax and recharge.
00:31And I could say that one of my favorite things about my room is this like cup holder cup shelf
00:39that my dad built for me last summer.
00:41And it's kind of personal because I'm collecting cups from all over the world.
00:47Clara's room is also her workshop for creative hobbies and where she keeps her souvenirs.
00:52Like most young Danes, Clara's putting in a gap year, a break after graduation.
00:58So she doesn't have what you'd call typical days, but she does have a regular breakfast.
01:03For breakfast, I'm usually having oatmeal.
01:07I really like oats and the start of the day really good.
01:10My bike is like any other accessory to my outfit.
01:15It's just like a part of me.
01:17I really like it so much.
01:19I have been biking alone around Copenhagen since I was six years old.
01:22And many people think that's like totally outrageous, but that's for 14 years now.
01:28And I was only in one like small accident just here recently.
01:32And on 14 years, I believe that's like a good statistic.
01:37With over 400 kilometers of bike paths, Copenhagen is known as the world's most cycle-friendly city.
01:44Over 60% of its residents hop on their bikes daily, defying a yearly average temperature of barely 9 degrees Celsius.
01:51I like living in a city where the focus on the environment is like a huge part of our way to look at the world.
01:59We are at Amalienborg, which is the royal castle and the residence of the king and the queen of Denmark.
02:06I'm not the biggest royalist, but I do like the Danish royals.
02:11And also, I believe that it's really a symbol of freedom and that we are free in Denmark.
02:17That you can bike over the square and you can get so close to the buildings where the royal lives.
02:22You don't see that in so many other countries.
02:25Clara is currently working 15 to 20 hours a week to cover her living expenses and pay her parents a little rent.
02:36She also administers a social media account about mental health topics.
02:41She's taking some photos for it.
02:43For lunch, Clara meets up with her friend, Lieve, at one of their favorite spots, the Danish Design Museums Café.
02:54They're both going through the same phase of life and enjoy talking about their experiences.
02:59In Denmark, it's really common when you graduate from high school to take one or multiple gap years and that is what we both are doing.
03:09We have been working the past couple of months and now we both have free time because we quit our jobs and we're like waiting to do the next thing.
03:20Lieve has plans to travel around Europe, while Clara will be starting at the Heilskule in the fall to study creative writing.
03:30Heilskules are Danish boarding schools for young adults.
03:34There they focus on self-development and learning of new skills without exams or grades.
03:42Later in the afternoon, Clara meets up with her father when he comes home from work.
03:47He does the cooking at home, but the family gets takeout about twice a month.
03:55Generally, young Danes move out of their parents' house around age 22, five years earlier than the European average.
04:02Clara has no such plans.
04:04She enjoys living with her family.
04:08The rent in Copenhagen is extremely high and I wouldn't afford to like just move out now.
04:15And I'm aware of I'm not getting this time again.
04:19So when I move out, it's like probably for good.
04:22So I just really want to enjoy the time that I have with them because we are really like, we have a really strong relationship.
04:31So this was a day in my life living here in Copenhagen.
