00:00Kim Kardashian is biting her nails because in a few months, she is going to find out if she is a certified California lawyer.
00:11You have been exactly where she is today.
00:14I have been. Absolutely.
00:16You are waiting to find out if you have passed the bar.
00:19We found out that Kim actually did take the California bar exam in July.
00:25Late July.
00:26And took it at the same time, at the same time as thousands of other people, but she got a little different experience.
00:34Right. And now we've, look, it's odd if she took the exam a month ago that nobody knew about it until we broke this story last night.
00:43But what happens is they have convention centers around L.A.
00:47And that's, I remember when I took the bar exam, there were at least a thousand people in that room at the convention center.
00:54When COVID hit, they allowed proctors to privately administer the test.
01:02We don't know for sure, but it seems that that's exactly what happened here.
01:06It seems unlikely that Kim Kardashian lost into a room with a thousand people.
01:10And nobody said anything.
01:11And nobody came out and said, even if they didn't take a picture, that they would say that she was in there.
01:16So here's, this is why this is interesting and I think impressive.
01:21So Kim, because she didn't go to law school, she didn't go to college.
01:25She didn't go to college.
01:25But she didn't go to law school.
01:27And if you don't go to law school, you have to take what we call in California the baby bar.
01:32And that baby bar qualifies you to take the real bar.
01:36She passed the baby bar on the fourth try.
01:38But in addition to that, you put in a lot of time as an apprentice working with lawyers, six years.
01:47Yeah.
01:47And she did that in May.
01:49There was a graduation ceremony in her backyard and lots of people attended.
01:55And that was a big deal.
01:57So now she takes the bar exam and you do not get the results immediately.
02:02First of all, it is the hardest bar exam in the country.
02:06Really?
02:06It's a two, yeah, it's a two.
02:08California's the hardest.
02:09Why?
02:10Well, it has a lowest percentage passage rate.
02:14But the test itself.
02:15They're not standardized tests across the country, no.
02:18But when I took it, it was three day test, two and a half days.
02:22It's now two days.
02:23But it consists of essays and multiple choice mostly.
02:29And there are 200 multiple choice questions.
02:31You either get them right or wrong.
02:32And it's a hard test.
02:34Last July.
02:36It's administered twice a year.
02:38The one a year ago, 53% of the people passed.
02:43So almost, yeah, it was half one almost.
02:46Wow.
02:46And you don't find out immediately.
02:50She will find out the results November 7th.
02:54Remember, she took it July 29th.
02:57She's going to find out November 7th.
03:00And then the results become public on November 9th at 6 o'clock on the State Bar Portal.
03:06So what do you say we pump the brakes on whether it's impressive until we see what happens in November?
03:11Shouldn't we pump the brakes a little bit?
03:12It took her four times to pass the baby bar, which is a simplified version of the bar.
03:17I give her credit for going through it.
03:19And she's going along.
03:20I give her some credit.
03:21No, you don't.
03:21You don't.
03:22Grudgingly.
03:22Look, look, be a lawyer.
03:24We should say, Derek is a lawyer.
03:26Yes, you actually should say it because you wouldn't look at him and think it.
03:29Derek went to Yale Law School and it bugs the crap out of him.
03:31That Kim Kardashian, who did not go to law school, did not go to college, is about to potentially have the same degree as you.
03:40If this is it, it'll be a low day in my life because I don't go on her turf.
03:44This is our turf.
03:45You know, you and I are lawyers.
03:46We sometimes speak off to the side about Charles.
03:49Even though it was how cute when he said, are all bargaining exams the same?
03:52How rich.
03:52Wasn't it adorable that he thought all law was the same?
03:55How rich coming from a guy who gets a law degree from Yale, practices in a big law firm, and you say, oh, she's going into somebody else's lane.
04:04You work at TMZ.
04:06That's fair.
04:06I kind of drifted to her lane.
04:08I never really thought about that.
04:09Yeah.
04:09I cast kind of a harsh reflection on my life.
04:12We'll pass that as quickly as we can.
04:14Oh, yeah, let's move past that.
04:15We don't need to talk about that.
04:16Do you have an idea, after you take the bar exam?
04:18Yes, I had a clear idea.
04:21I went from the downtown convention center in L.A. to the beach in Malibu, and I sat there and said, I failed this exam.
04:30How am I going to explain this?
04:31Because I was going to go teach in Miami at the University of Miami Law School.
04:36How are you going to explain it?
04:37I was literally sitting there thinking, how am I going to explain I have to take a week off in February to retake the bar exam because I flunked?
04:46And that was in my head, in my head, and in a real way for three months.
04:51Oh, everyone goes to the embarrassment.
04:52For three months.
04:52Now, did you think?
04:53At my law firm, I was nervous about it.
04:54They had paid for the study.
04:55Let me get it.
04:55No, I know you're going to say you knew that you passed it when you passed it.
04:58I mean, listen, I had a strong hunch that the test is difficult for a lot of people, but I had a hunch that I passed it.
05:03Now, I do want to say.
05:04I was so sure I flunked.
05:05If she fails, it's no knock on her.
05:07It's a very difficult test.
05:08The problem, and you know this as well as I do, when you fail once, the odds of passing the next time actually go down.
05:14It's not like you get better at the test.
05:15Well, it's not that they go down, but in February, all the people who flunked take it again.
05:21So, the percentage is much less.
05:23You get in your head.
05:24It's a very difficult test.
05:26Hi, I'm Kelsey from San Francisco, California.
05:29I know people like Derek criticize Kim Kardashian's, but honestly, she deserves it.
05:35If she passes the bar exam, she deserves all the credit she can get because it's definitely not easy.
05:42No, it's not easy.
05:43She didn't even, it wasn't even like she was hunkered down in like the month before the bar exam.
05:48She was at Jeff Bezos' wedding.
05:50She was traveling all over Europe and having a good time, so she must have been confident.
05:54If she passes the bar exam, it is way more impressive than Derek passing the bar exam.
