A major hay drop at Paruna in SA’s Riverland Mallee has delivered quality vetch hay to 140 farmers, with NSW volunteers returning the support they once received.
00:00Hay arrived last night. It was loaded yesterday morning and came across through the day, arriving in the dark about 8pm.
00:05140 farmers today will receive hay, so it's great support from people up to 100km surrounding.
00:12It's really important that they come in and collect their hay, connect with their local community and there's other service providers here.
00:17It's about a great morning out for farmers, and by all means, while you're out, going to town, do something that you haven't done for a while.
00:23There's 32 volunteers here today, 14 of those are truck drivers who've made the trip from New South Wales across to South Australia.
00:30Some of those are farmers themselves. I appreciate that South Australia helped them out back in 2018 and 19, when a lot of hay came from South Australia to them.
00:36They want to pay it back. Others of our drivers are business people that maybe sell into the rural sector or maybe even not.
00:42These guys are behind the desk in management most of the week, but they love to take the day off, get the company truck and come out and support these farmers.
00:50They find it a really valuable experience to connect with the people on the land, see for themselves how tough it is.
00:55And they all go away with just a deep sense of having done something really profound for these struggling communities.
01:02And they're always putting their hand up for the next one.
