Athula Samarasekera was one of the early power-hitters for Sri Lanka, remembered for his aggressive batting and ability to clear the field restrictions in ODI cricket. A tall and imposing cricketer, Samarasekera represented Sri Lanka in the 1983 and 1992 Cricket World Cups.

He made his One Day International debut in 1983 against Pakistan at Swansea and his Test debut at Lord’s in 1988. Though his start was modest, he showed his flair with a breezy 57 in the second innings of his debut Test, alongside useful wickets and catches.

His most memorable innings came during the 1992 World Cup, when he scored a quickfire 75 against Zimbabwe, reaching his half-century in just 31 balls. This innings played a crucial role in the first-ever successful chase of a 300+ target in ODI history—a milestone moment in world cricket.

While Samarasekera never fully cemented his place in the national side, his fearless style of batting paved the way for future Sri Lankan openers who would go on to dominate world cricket. After his international career, he continued playing professional cricket in Bangladesh.

This video takes you through his cricketing journey, his aggressive style, and his unforgettable contributions to Sri Lankan cricket. 🏏🔥
