During a press briefing on Wednesday, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser was asked by a reporter multiple times if she believed President Trump would declare a national emergency to continue his deployment of National Guard troops to Washington D.C.
Transcript
00:00The President Trump had said in prior days that he may look at a national
00:06emergency to keep the surge going and then recently said that he doesn't
00:10think that is necessary. Do you think this is going to end after 30 days and
00:13if it has been successful do you want it to end after 30 days? What we want is
00:18local control of our public safety ecosystem and that includes deployment
00:24of officers and we want federal officers that work in coordination with us, DEA,
00:32ATF, FBI, who as the Chief just mentioned work with us on major crime issues all
00:39the time and our officers are familiar with working with them and they have
00:45been helpful in the field. I think we're going to have officers and we want
00:51officers. We want to enhance our officer presence. And for Chief, the Chairman of
00:59the Government Oversight Committee, Comer, sent a letter to you recently asking for
01:03all kinds of things, all kinds of records and for transcribed interviews with seven
01:08MPD commanders. Are you cooperating with that? How is that going? We will, we have
01:14been cooperating and we will continue to cooperate. Thank you. Yes sir. Yep. For the
01:20mayor, could you say why you believe the Trump administration exerting greater
01:24control over Union Station would be a good thing? They own Union Station. It's owned
01:29by the Department of Transportation and it will be a good thing because if that
01:34station has suffered from needing some say twelve billion dollars but let's call
01:41it at least eight billion dollars worth of investment in the renovation and that is
01:48not something that the district will be able to support. It is an important
01:54regional asset, it's an important asset for the Eastern Seaboard, it's an important
01:59asset for the nation. So it is appropriate in my view for the federal government to
02:05make the necessary investments in the transformation of Union Station. Do you
02:11know whether or not they plan to make those investments? I don't. It's not in any
02:15current budgets and it hasn't, it hasn't been for as long as I've been familiar with
02:20the plans. It has suffered from not being able to get the money that it needs
02:25needs for the renovation.
