No, the Greek Prime Minister's wife did not buy a flat with public funds.
00:06
The Greek government has slammed allegations that Mareva Grabovsky-Mitsotakis,
00:11
wife of Prime Minister Kyriakos-Mitsotakis,
00:14
used taxpayers' money to buy a multi-billion euro flat in an urban development south of Athens.
00:20
A website called Voice News posted an article on the 15th of August,
00:24
claiming that Grabovsky purchased the flat in a skyscraper in the Elinikon Metropolitan Park in Athens,
00:30
which is currently under construction, at a time when people are drowning in debt.
00:35
The allegations were picked up by fringe media outlets,
00:38
which also published their own articles, such as Cardista Star Accra.
00:42
This website said that the flat supposedly costs between two and three million euros.
00:46
The publication of the claims prompted Grabovsky to take the websites to court.
00:51
In official court documents, she said that she categorically denies the claims,
00:56
labelling them as fake news that damages her credibility.
00:59
She attacked them for accusing her of living in a parallel universe of wealth and privilege,
01:04
said that the allegations had since spread through Greece and beyond,
01:08
and added that they could easily be checked by looking at Greece's land registry.
01:12
The Sabinas called on the websites to retract and apologise for the claims, which Voice News has done.
01:18
It released a statement admitting that what it said was wrong and was not based on any evidence,
01:23
and it's also taken down the original article.
01:25
The Cardista article, however, is still online, and the website appears to have doubled down.
01:30
It's released a statement acknowledging the subpoena,
01:33
and accuses her and her husband of setting up the largest criminal organisation Greece has ever known.
01:38
The Prime Minister's Director of Digital Communication has since made a statement,
01:42
again dismissing the allegations as fake news,
01:45
noting that there has recently been a significant uptick in disinformation in Greece.
