Authorities say a shooter opened fire with a rifle through the windows of a Minneapolis Catholic church and struck children celebrating Mass during the first week of school.

00:00And we saw our youth minister, Ellie, and she was with her family and had been sitting
00:29on the side of the church, as I recall from her telling me where the shooter was.
00:35And so she described bullets coming in near her and hitting people.
00:41And there'd be a brief pause in the gunshots and then pounding on the wall and then shots
00:47would start again.
00:49And she just said she just thought that was going to be it.
00:54So she was trying to call her husband and it just sounded, as you would expect, unimaginably awful.
01:06Of any place I know, this is where I felt most safe and where I think everyone I know felt
01:11most safe.
01:12My children felt safe.
01:13Everyone felt safe here.
01:14And I just pray that it continues to be a place where people feel safe after a period
01:23of whatever this is going to look like, processing and this.
01:27But I just pray that this will be a place where we continue to feel safe.
01:31I think, you know, as a mom, it's really incredibly painful to know what these parents are going
01:51through, to have, you know, send your eight-year-old, ten-year-old to school and within a few hours
01:59as they sit in for prayer, to have them be gunned down is just unspeakable horror.
02:09So my heart breaks for the families and the victims of this tragic morning here in Minneapolis
02:17at the Anacination Catholic Church.
02:19We are going to learn more about motives and what more can be done to make sure that we
02:34avoid tragedies like this.
02:36But at this moment, I just want to hold the space for prayer for the families and the victims
02:43of this tragic event.
02:49It's been incredible to hear from leaders of Congress, even the White House reached out
02:58to see what our community needs.
03:00And that's the kind of moment that we are in.
03:03It's a moment of grief.
03:06It's a moment of solidarity.
03:08It's a moment of prayer.
03:09But we know that once this investigation is done, once these families are made whole,
03:16then we can have the national conversation that is necessary to stop school shootings like
03:22this from taking place in our communities and devastating families all over this country.
03:28Were you inside the school?
03:30No.
03:30No.
03:31She was just driving to work and saw the police vehicles and pulled over and within seconds
03:39was barricaded in.
03:41So she's been trapped here all morning.
03:43In school, she actually called her mom and her mom is here with her and just kind of dealing
03:50with this whole thing.
03:51I was thankful to see kids coming out unharmed, safe.
03:57But just, I, the looks on some of their faces, I, I, I just, the screams coming from the moms
04:07who didn't know where their kids are, I just, that, I, I don't even, I, it was just.
04:15It's gut-wrenching.
04:16Yeah.
04:17They're, you see the videos online, but it does not compare to seeing it and witnessing it.
04:27I, I, I don't have enough words to say to explain or express the sadness that I feel
04:40for those families and those parents and those kids and the teachers, the staff at the school
04:44and the church, the neighbors, everybody, this is just, this, it's so much absolutely devastating.
