00:00A peaceful morning of prayer, tragedy struck.
00:03Inside the Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis,
00:06two innocent children, just 8 and 10 years old, were killed.
00:1014 other children and three adults were injured
00:13as a gunman opened fire during a school mass.
00:15This was supposed to be the first week of school, a moment of hope and community.
00:19Instead, it became a scene of horror.
00:20The suspected attacker, 23-year-old Robin Westman,
00:24approached the church armed with a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol.
00:27From outside the windows, he began firing into the congregation,
00:31where children sat praying.
00:32Police say Westman acted alone, and after unleashing dozens of rounds,
00:36he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
00:39Authorities also discovered a smoke bomb in his vehicle nearby.
00:42His motive, still unknown.
00:44The victims, two children, only 8 and 10 years old, were killed.
00:4817 others were injured. 14 of them were children.
00:51Doctors say at least 7 of those children remain in critical condition.
00:55Parents rushed to Hennepin County Medical Centre,
00:58desperate for answers, desperate for hope.
01:00Bishop Kevin Kenney, who grew up in this very parish, stood by their side.
01:05It was horrific, he said. It shouldn't be happening.
01:08Across America, leaders reacted with grief and outrage.
01:11House Speaker Mike Johnson.
01:13Our prayers are with the children, families, and all those impacted by this evil attack.
01:17House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
01:20Weapons of war have no place in our neighbourhoods.
01:22Senate Leader Chuck Schumer, we must stop gun violence in America.
01:26And Minnesota Congresswoman Angie Craig, deeply shocked and saddened.
01:31But this isn't an isolated tragedy.
01:33According to the Gun Violence Archive,
01:35the United States has already endured 286 mass shootings this year alone.
01:40Incidents where four or more people are shot, not including the gunmen.
01:44The numbers rose sharply during the pandemic peaking in 2021.
01:47And though they've begun to fall, they remain devastatingly high.
01:50Minnesota is known for relatively strong gun safety laws.
01:53Background checks, permits, restrictions for violent offenders, and even red flag protections.
01:58Yet still, the weapons ended up in the hands of the gunmen.
02:00Authorities have not yet confirmed how he obtained them.
02:03Police Chief Brian O'Hara called this attack a deliberate act of violence against children and worshippers.
02:08Think about that.
02:09Children, worshippers, in a house of God, cut down while praying at the start of a school year.
02:13This is more than a headline.
02:14These are families torn apart, dreams destroyed, futures stolen.
02:19Vice President J.D. Vance said the White House is monitoring the situation closely.
02:23He urged Americans to join in praying for the victims.
02:27But for the people of Minneapolis and for parents across the country, prayers may not feel like enough.
02:32Two children are gone, 17 people wounded, a community shattered.
02:36The question remains, how many more times must America endure this kind of tragedy before something changes?
