00:00Careful manoeuvring and a good eye are important here.
00:07It's important not to damage the tree when it's lifted out of the ground.
00:11Sayyid Kutavan has future plans for it.
00:14Taking care with the roots is vital.
00:19This should be lifted carefully.
00:22This is the main root.
00:23The root must be removed safely without damaging it.
00:27That is where its life lies.
00:30We are near Coimbatore in the state of Tamil Nadu.
00:35The road is being expanded into a four-lane highway
00:38and the mature trees that line the old road are in the way.
00:45All the trees used to be cut down before road expansion work began.
00:49But things have changed in Tamil Nadu.
00:55Sayyid Kutavan and his organisation Green Care
00:59are trying to save as many trees as possible
01:02by moving them a few metres away from the new road.
01:05All kinds of native trees such as neem trees,
01:11Indian beech trees, peepal trees,
01:13fig trees that we planted have taken root and thrived.
01:19For the trees to grow well, conditions have to be right.
01:23The replanting hole has to be roomy enough
01:26and include soil from the old location.
01:29Branches are pruned before the tree is moved,
01:31so it can devote all its energy to putting down new roots.
01:35If you plant new saplings, they'll take 10 years to grow.
01:42When we replant the trees,
01:44we are also retaining the oxygen the trees provide
01:47and preserving greenery.
01:49That's the purpose of this project.
01:50Sayyid Kutavan has been relocating trees for government agencies for some time now.
01:57But for the civil engineers responsible for this road project
02:01in the Tirunel Valley district,
02:04it's uncharted territory.
02:06I have completed seven or eight road construction projects in 15 years.
02:11I have never been involved with a tree replanting initiative.
02:16Generally, we used to cut down the trees and plant new saplings.
02:19This is the first time in my life I have carried out this project.
02:24I am pleased with the success rate.
02:28Sayyid Kutavan has transplanted several thousand trees since 2015.
02:34He says he can even transplant trees that are 500 years old using this method.
02:41All the resources, huge amounts of money
02:44and all the scientists in the world
02:46are not able to produce a single leaf.
02:49It can only be done naturally by trees.
02:52So we should not destroy what is impossible for us.
02:56Trees are the reason we breathe.
02:57If trees are happy,
02:59our generations will be happy too.
03:02The first 90 days after relocation are crucial, he says.
03:06If the trees make it through,
03:08the chances of a long life in their new home are good.
03:12But if they make it through,
03:12it's seven or five years,
03:13when we walk through up or ain will be happy too.
03:15That's one of the last 90 days from 25 to 25 to 25
03:19When the trees call the trees.
03:22The notice may be for Christmas.
03:25It will better be for Christmas.
03:27Mother's Livest Tyлагmorite
03:28maybe to the trees.
03:32You can find each other,
03:33that will take them out for an amazing home.
