Truck Dynasty (2025) Season 1 Episode 3- It's a Boat. It's a Truck. It's BoatTruck.
Transcript
00:01What is that?
00:02I have this idea, right?
00:03You take one of our trucks.
00:04You find a way to make it float.
00:06A customer called you and said,
00:07I want to turn a truck into a boat.
00:08No.
00:09I'm kind of going to take it upon myself
00:11to make sure that someone in my family sells it.
00:13That thing is never going to work.
00:15This is not a train wreck.
00:16It's a shipwreck.
00:17Just sell the thing, okay?
00:19I mean, you just blew a $300,000 deal.
00:22What do you know about that?
00:24Everybody knows about that.
00:25We have a $350,000 project
00:28on this new Land Rover Defender 6x6.
00:30And out of nowhere, it fell through.
00:32You're going to find me a buyer.
00:33Stop it. Let's take a ride.
00:35This is the biggest test drive of my career.
00:41Boat truck, going in the water today.
00:43You guys ready?
00:44You need provisions if we get stuck out at sea.
00:46If it doesn't float,
00:48this would just be a tremendous waste of time and money.
00:50Here we go.
00:51Oh, we got a problem.
00:55We're running!
00:56It worked!
00:57So I want to get all six wheels and tires on,
01:10see if we ended up with the right amount of distance,
01:12if our measurements were right between the back two.
01:14And then the front two,
01:16I already know we're going to have to hack away at that thing.
01:18I just want to see how much before we start making a fender.
01:21Sounds good.
01:22Right on.
01:24Good there?
01:26I can't wait to see this thing on big shoes.
01:29We've been in the new facility for a couple months now.
01:31Everybody's getting a new groove of things.
01:33We're cranking out damn near 20 cars a week.
01:35We've also got a couple of really custom one-off projects.
01:39I've got this one for Frankie's customer.
01:41It's the first ever new-body Defender 6x6.
01:45The old model Defender is kind of like a cult following,
01:48and it went away for a long time.
01:49They just brought it back,
01:50but nobody's really done anything with them.
01:52I haven't seen anybody lift them.
01:53The suspension is pretty complicated in these things.
01:55We're going to go ahead and make it a six-wheeler.
01:57When I'm finished with this thing, it'll be $350,000.
02:00Look how much better this truck looks now.
02:03As soon as the wheels go on it,
02:05now it looks like an apocalypse truck.
02:08We've got a pretty elaborate bumper.
02:12Real wild, a lot of spikes.
02:14I'm going to come right away across,
02:15just tuck right below the headlight.
02:17Aluminum, like two and a half inches.
02:19And just use the pipe bender on it.
02:21Cool. Thanks, man.
02:25We've been working on this Defender for a couple weeks now.
02:27We're on the home stretch,
02:28and now it's time to start thinking about what's next.
02:31The reason we're successful
02:32is that we always go for a bigger build, right?
02:34We take our last idea,
02:35and if your new idea doesn't kill your last idea,
02:37somebody else will.
02:38So we always got to come up with what's next.
02:40I've got something I think will just get the car market talking.
02:45Clear the middle up a little bit
02:46because we're going to bring the pontoon in here.
02:51Perfect.
02:54Look at these things, huh?
02:56Holy .
02:59So I had this idea.
03:00How cool would it be
03:01if we could take one of our trucks right into the beach?
03:04So we're going to turn this truck into a boat.
03:07Oh, boy.
03:08We're going to make it float.
03:09I want it to be a drivable truck
03:11that you can just go down the boat ramp and off you go.
03:13Now, how much flotation
03:15and how much displacement and all that
03:17to make a 5,000, 6,000-pound truck float?
03:20Not sure yet, but...
03:21That's where you come in.
03:22I mean, I've seen you guys turn a truck
03:24from, you know, four wheels to six wheels,
03:26do all kinds of crazy stuff.
03:28I don't think this is going to be as wild as you think.
03:30Not for this crew.
03:31Don't jinx it again, please.
03:35This is what we do.
03:36This is what we're known for.
03:37We build stuff that you look at and say,
03:39how?
03:40And why?
03:41Did you have to?
03:42Think about it.
03:43Think about it.
03:44If we make it go with the gas pedal,
03:46turn with the steering wheel,
03:47and float without having to do too many steps
03:49when you're going in the water,
03:50it'd be a really fun project.
03:52Sounds awesome.
03:54We'll start with the Gladiator
03:55and make it as big as we can.
03:57Big lift, big tires.
03:59For flotation, we're going to fabricate a bow,
04:02and we're going to attach these two salvage pontoons I bought.
04:05For propulsion, I'm thinking of a propeller attachment
04:08for the drivetrain,
04:09and for the steering,
04:11possibly a rudder that turns with the steering wheel.
04:13So you drive this thing just like you would the regular car.
04:16This is going to be a real challenge.
04:18We've never done a boat before.
04:19Last thing I want to do is sink a bunch of time,
04:21money, and effort into something
04:22that ends up sinking in the canal.
04:24You said you saw this floating?
04:26Yeah.
04:27When it was new or, like, recent?
04:28Well, in a photo.
04:29Oh.
04:30Yeah.
04:33Let's sink down a little bit, guys,
04:34so we can get out of the scope first.
04:36Right now, we're trying to put the biggest lift possible
04:38so we can make tons of room for flotation.
04:40I'm going to run into the parts department for the lift kit.
04:43We need all the room we can get at the same time
04:45to get us to clear the ground
04:46and still go over a little bit of terrain to get to the water.
04:51What's up, Chris?
04:52How are you?
04:53Doing my thing.
04:55Hey, Felix.
04:56This looks great.
04:57Yeah.
05:00All right.
05:03Where's Joe?
05:04Is Joe here, Kev?
05:05He was just here.
05:08Well, they're disassembling this one.
05:10Which one is this?
05:12Kev, what are we doing to this one?
05:14Uh, trying to make this thing a boat.
05:16Oh.
05:17No, you're not.
05:18What do you think?
05:20You're making it a boat?
05:21Not exactly.
05:22A customer called you and said,
05:23I want to turn a truck into a boat.
05:25No.
05:26Nobody bought it.
05:28So this is for you?
05:29I mean, somebody's going to buy it eventually.
05:31I cannot believe you're actually doing this.
05:33Dad, are we in trouble?
05:36I feel like we're in trouble.
05:37It's going to be fine.
05:38She's going to love it.
05:39I can't believe you don't have a customer on it
05:40and you're doing this.
05:41No, I need this.
05:42I need this truck.
05:44What's the plan?
05:45I'm going to grab like a pontoon boat
05:46and smash it together with this truck.
05:48Put some gigantic tires on it.
05:50Where are the tires going to go?
05:52Right where they usually go.
05:53Where are the pontoons going to go?
05:54We're still figuring that out.
05:56Of all the stuff you have going on right now,
05:58this is what you're deciding to do?
05:59Without a customer's name on it.
06:01Just doing the math right now,
06:02between the cost of the truck,
06:04the parts that Joe ordered for the truck,
06:06and the 10 guys that are working on the truck,
06:08it's like a $100,000 project already.
06:10Like we just don't have the time for that.
06:13I'm amazed that you're doing this right now.
06:15People are going to line up for this thing.
06:16Sometimes I decide to build a car without a buyer
06:18and it's either a hit, right?
06:20And I end up selling 65 more copies of it
06:22and we'll perfect the soup or it doesn't, right?
06:26Few and far between that I miss, but it happens
06:28and they end up sitting in my garage at home.
06:30I can't imagine that I'm the only guy
06:32who's into one of these.
06:33I know you're busy.
06:34I mean, get...
06:35Yeah, let me get to it.
06:36I know.
06:37I'll see you later.
06:38I love you.
06:39Bye.
06:40Bye.
06:41See you later.
06:42I don't know.
06:50Is it Bayless or is it Jerry?
06:52Who?
06:53The best sales guy.
06:54We're all good salesmen.
06:56Some of us are great salesmen.
06:58Me, I'm just tremendous.
06:59It's what I do.
07:00But like Ted,
07:01who do you think the best salesman is?
07:02I think it's Pop Pop.
07:04Pop Pop?
07:05He doesn't even know where we work.
07:06He don't even know what he's selling.
07:07What happened?
07:08Frankie says he's the top sales guy.
07:10Well, I didn't say top...
07:11I think I'm the best salesman,
07:12but if you go by numbers,
07:13Pop Pop ran circles around me last month.
07:15I always run circles around you.
07:17Why are we having this conversation?
07:18No, we're just trying to see the best salesman.
07:19Ted, you're a phenomenal salesman.
07:20I've seen you with customers.
07:21He is phenomenal.
07:22I think Pop Pop is the diamond in the rough here.
07:25That's right.
07:26Wow!
07:27Doesn't know how to use the computer.
07:28Doesn't know what we do here.
07:29But let me ask you a question, Frank, okay?
07:31I mean, you just blew a $300,000 deal,
07:34like yesterday or two days ago.
07:36I blew a deal?
07:37But he lost a 6x6 Defender, okay?
07:39What do you know about that?
07:40Everybody knows about that.
07:42We have a $350,000 project
07:45on this new Land Rover Defender 6x6,
07:47and out of nowhere, it fell through.
07:49Guy just stopped answering.
07:51This really sucks
07:52because Joe and Ashley were expecting
07:54this big $350,000 influx of capital
07:58to build other stuff.
07:59And guess what?
08:00It's not coming.
08:01You didn't do a good job, Frank.
08:03Admit it.
08:04I love this version of you.
08:05I've never seen this so angry at me for no reason.
08:10It's a big screw up on my part.
08:12Was he dead?
08:13He might be dead, jail.
08:15I haven't told Joe anything yet,
08:17but if everybody's talking about it,
08:19I need to go talk to Joe.
08:23I had Defender 6x6 sold,
08:25and from soup to nuts,
08:28it's the most incredible build ever.
08:30And it was a guarantee.
08:32But guess what?
08:33Guy changes his mind.
08:34Guy changes his mind.
08:35Well, that's what I'm trying to tell you.
08:37It happens.
08:38It happens to the best of us.
08:39Has that ever happened to you?
08:40Absolutely not.
08:42And there you go.
08:43It happens to the best of us, but not the very best.
08:46I'm not disagreeing.
08:47Yeah.
08:48The apple fell far from the tree.
08:49Put it right to 89.
08:5089.
08:51Put you about here.
08:52How much water displacement do we have there?
08:55All right, so 3.14.
08:56After running the numbers and figuring out how much displacement we actually need,
09:01there's a little equation there based on how much water you get out of the way is how much weight you can lift.
09:06At 24 inches diameter.
09:07These things are 80, 90 cubic feet.
09:09We're going to keep these pontoons right at 89 inches,
09:10or we're going to cut a little conservatively in case we got to make some adjustments.
09:12We're going to start about 90 or so inches in.
09:13Chop it, right?
09:14Cap these things.
09:15See how much clearance we have for the tires.
09:16I know each one of these things is about, you know, 80 cubic feet.
09:19But less than half, we're going to be in trouble, so let's get creative as to how we're going to get them to the side of the truck.
09:22I think we can put some wheels together for the tire, all right?
09:24I'll try to make some teser on the front row.
09:25And here's how much, guys, I'm going to get you on the side.
09:26I'm going to get you on the side of the truck.
09:28I'll try to make some of the wheels together.
09:29But I'll try to make some adjustments.
09:30I'll try to make some adjustments, so I'll try to make some adjustments.
09:31And this is about 70 or so inches in.
09:34I'm going to be just a little bit more different than this stuff.
09:35We're going to let's get them to the side of the truck.
09:48I think we can put some wheel inside the front of this nose cone.
09:50Maybe we can get a couple extra inches out of the back side of this thing.
09:53You got that tire behind you. Wheel that thing over here.
09:56So we've done some math.
09:57We've figured out how much water we actually have to displace to float this truck.
10:00But there's no bolt-on pontoons, right?
10:03So now we've got to find a way to attach it there.
10:05So we don't want to shorten up the pontoons too much,
10:07but we do got to trim them, and we've got to clear the steering, right?
10:10You've still got to be able to turn the wheels.
10:12And just barely clear it.
10:14I'm saying it's an extra foot or two.
10:16Are we really going to go that far outside of the wheel?
10:20If it can pull out of the lift, it's still street legal.
10:23They're a little tapered at the front.
10:25We're hoping that'll give us some clearance.
10:27You need full steering.
10:28Imagine you can only turn a quarter of a turn,
10:31and you're hitting these things.
10:32It'll rip the pontoons right off,
10:33and you won't be able to even just make a left turn on the street,
10:36get into a parking spot, never mind.
10:38But we're not going to really know until we get this thing attached.
10:40Let's see how this thing looks.
10:41You and I both know this is 15 minutes of touch-up, clean-up, grinding, cowboy.
11:00Joe!
11:01Yeah?
11:01What's up, Frank?
11:02What do you do?
11:02I'll take care of it.
11:03Thanks, buddy.
11:04Appreciate it.
11:05You know the Defender 6x6 guy?
11:08Yeah.
11:08The last payment didn't hit, and he's not responding.
11:11It's like he just, like, fell off the face of the earth type.
11:14Hold on.
11:15Don't give me that.
11:16Like, this guy's going to just go dark?
11:17He's dark.
11:18He's completely dark.
11:19So the deal's dead?
11:21I think it's dead.
11:23It's $350,000 freaking dollars.
11:26I know!
11:27So the deal's dead.
11:36I think it's dead.
11:38It's $350,000 freaking dollars.
11:42I know!
11:43There's not people every day walking around want to spend $350,000 on a truck.
11:47I wouldn't have started this thing unless we had a real buyer.
11:49I hate giving Joe bad news.
11:51That's Jerry's job.
11:52But today is one of those days where I have to give Joe bad news because the Defender 6x6 was my baby.
11:59And, uh, it sucks.
12:02This thing is the price of an apartment somewhere.
12:06We hit the ground running as soon as we get a deposit because this is the difference between us and other shops.
12:11It works for us, and it benefits for us because I turn over my trucks faster and I sell it on more vehicles.
12:16Every once in a while, I get stung.
12:19All right.
12:19We're going to split the fix on this, all right?
12:21I'm going to finish the truck.
12:22Okay.
12:23You're going to find me a buyer.
12:24No doubt.
12:26Find us a little buyer, all right?
12:40So there's no separations in this barrel?
12:44So we've got the lift on, got big wheels and tires on there, and we've got room to put this flotation underneath.
12:50Now it's time to build the flotation.
12:53We're dragging these pontoons in, and I know saved a couple bucks, bought some used ones, but they are a little rougher than I thought.
13:00There's little pinholes all over the place.
13:01They're covered in barnacles and seafood growing all over the place.
13:04So we're going to have to clean these things up.
13:06A hair bigger than this?
13:07No, you can catch an edge there.
13:08Oh, my God.
13:10What is that?
13:11It's exactly what you think it is.
13:13We're going to put it on this truck.
13:14Come take a look.
13:15Get these pontoons.
13:17Tuck them in real nice on the side.
13:18Jesus.
13:19But what's going to stop the water from going into the engine compartment?
13:22I'm going to make it flow.
13:23Only you.
13:24Only you, Joe.
13:25Nobody else could do something like that except you.
13:27Get into it because you're going to sell it.
13:28I like it.
13:29Yeah?
13:29Yeah.
13:30I like it a lot.
13:31I have to go see Ashley.
13:33All right, man.
13:33I'll see you later.
13:34I'm talking.
13:35I started this project thinking I was a leg up on the Defender.
13:37That fell through.
13:38But Pops is super excited about my boat truck build, and that's good because he's going to have to sell this thing.
13:43He's the guy who's going to find a home for it.
13:58Oh, you made it.
13:59I just saw this crazy build downstairs.
14:02I don't know what it is.
14:04It looks, it's got a pontoon.
14:05It's got this.
14:06I told Joe I like it a lot, but I'm not sure if I like it.
14:09I'm not sure about anything that's going on down there.
14:11Oh, I'm sure.
14:13I told you.
14:14What is it, Joe?
14:15Is it a boat?
14:17Amphibious.
14:17It's an amphibious gladiator.
14:19The amphibious truck is a passion project for Joe.
14:22I know it's going to come out great, but I want Joe to really feel like it was a smart move.
14:26It was a good project, so I'm kind of taking it a little bit into my hands, like making sure that it does properly get sold.
14:33So I pulled the family together.
14:34We have sales.
14:35We have marketing.
14:36Got to get everybody on the same page.
14:38We have to sell this truck.
14:39He always wanted to do an amphibious truck.
14:40Well, let me tell you something.
14:41That thing is never going to work.
14:42If that thing ever does go into water, it'll be the most amazing product we'll ever develop.
14:48You're missing the point.
14:49Everyone here is missing the point.
14:50Whether it floats or whether it sinks, how the hell do you market that?
14:53It'd be nice if he's stuck.
14:54It's the most Floridian thing I've ever heard of mine.
14:56So, truck.
14:57But are we trying to get away from this whole Florida mansion?
15:00No.
15:00It's a national brand?
15:01No.
15:02Into Florida mansion.
15:03Jerry, the vehicle is in progress.
15:05It is being built.
15:06I love it.
15:06And we need to find a way to get the money back in house for how much money we're spilling out to build the thing, right?
15:12Even crazier are the money.
15:14Yes, it's crazy, but we're doing it.
15:15I think it's going to sell nationally.
15:17I can put lipstick on a pig.
15:18I can't make out with the pig, Ash.
15:20Jerry, you can make out with a pig.
15:21I've seen you do it quite a few times in your life.
15:24This amphibious truck is absolutely a go.
15:26This isn't a maybe.
15:27Your comments about the...
15:29It doesn't matter at this point.
15:30It is being built.
15:30Joe is building the darn thing.
15:32Nobody has ever built anything like this.
15:34It is absolutely one of a kind.
15:36It's got our brand on it.
15:38Yep.
15:39You guys are going to do what you do, and you're going to make it happen.
15:41I think she's right.
15:42She's right.
15:43Both right.
15:43I totally agree with her.
15:44This is not a train wreck.
15:47It's a ship wreck.
15:56From what I see, we've got this panel to go on the back, finish the trim, and the big orange
16:01rack on the top, and we can start driving this thing.
16:04We've made a ton of progress on this Defender.
16:06I know I've lost the buyer, and it's kind of my own truck, but no one's going to buy it
16:09as a big pile of parts, so I have to get this thing down the finish line.
16:12But I do like the way it looks.
16:15Meanwhile, I've still got a ton of work to do under my amphibious truck.
16:18All right, so yeah, we'll clean that up and give that a weld, too.
16:22Yeah, so it goes.
16:22I bet you they rammed this thing into something at some point.
16:24Yeah, I'm going to have to take a look at the other one also, you know?
16:27Yeah.
16:27Because I think I see some daylight through that one.
16:28This one, yes.
16:29You got another one somewhere.
16:30There's one here.
16:31I've got the pontoons out, and they're a little rougher than I expected.
16:34The Jeep is around 7,000 pounds, and I'm relying on these things to displace enough water
16:39to float the Jeep.
16:40So what we're going to do is pressurize these things in the air, find all the leaks, and weld them
16:43shut.
16:44Yeah, it's not holding any pressure whatsoever.
16:47I'm going to keep running it.
16:48You hear anything?
16:50Not really.
16:51Right here, go ahead.
16:53Find it?
16:54Yeah, right here.
16:54Hold on.
16:55I feel it.
16:57All right, let's seal that up, see what we got.
16:59This is a Joe project.
17:00I'm not going to go out and buy brand spanking new pontoons.
17:03These are a little rough looking.
17:04I've got to put some work and love into them, but I'm sure I can make them air tight and make
17:07it work for this job.
17:15So here's what I'm thinking, right?
17:16Some sort of front flotation.
17:19Let's grab a measuring tape.
17:20Let's come off the front of this thing.
17:21Okay.
17:23I'd rather add another foot to the length of this thing to give you more.
17:27Okay.
17:28Imagine you're going down the boat ramp.
17:30That nose is going to plunge in first.
17:32You're going to hope to God that thing starts floating.
17:33It's going to have to have some angle.
17:35So you think you can mock this thing up on cardboard?
17:37Yeah, I think if we do that, we can make a small scale model.
17:40The bow is responsible for floating the engine.
17:43So we've got to build a bow that's frame attached that'll displace enough water that no matter
17:47what goes on, the front's going to float.
17:50This is a one-fifth scale model, but when I break this thing down, I got all my pieces
17:53ready to go.
17:54So I think we've got another 50 gallons right here if we want it.
17:57All right.
17:57Start drawing that out so we can cut squares.
17:59You got it.
18:00All right.
18:00With the Defender client out, the pressure on boat trucks even more because now I've got
18:04my resources spread super thin.
18:06I've got two expensive builds with nobody's name on it.
18:09So I want to do the buoyancy test tomorrow because if that fails, I'm going to put the
18:12boat truck aside and move on to regular projects with people's names on it.
18:18Say one right there?
18:19A little bit lower.
18:21Right there, yeah.
18:22If you want to start welding this thing in, you know what to do.
18:35Look at that boat.
18:36Oh my God.
18:36That's gorgeous.
18:38Beautiful.
18:39Yeah.
18:40Jerry.
18:41What's your name?
18:41Irv.
18:42Irv, pleasure.
18:43Yeah.
18:43I'm at the marina here, and today I got potential customers to meet and maybe sell them a boat
18:49truck.
18:50This is absolutely fantastic.
18:51Yeah, come on board.
18:52Check it out.
18:53You sure?
18:54Yeah.
18:54I'm a social butterfly, and I like to talk to people.
18:57It looks like a guy that knows boats.
18:59Yeah.
18:59We built a boat truck.
19:01Really?
19:01I think it's going to be a winner.
19:03This would be an honor for me to show you that product.
19:05We're heading back to Michigan today.
19:07Oh my God.
19:07They sent me some photos and a video.
19:08Only my luck.
19:09There's plenty of people out there.
19:11I don't need one person to talk to clothes.
19:13Do you remember this place?
19:15Yeah.
19:15They used to have the bikini contest here, right?
19:17My wife was in that bikini contest.
19:19Are you serious?
19:19Yeah.
19:20Max bought an apocalypse for us two years ago, and he always raves about that truck.
19:25It's interesting.
19:25I have a Rolls Royce, and I have the Jeep.
19:27Right.
19:27And I get more people that ask me about the Jeep than ask me about the Rolls Royce.
19:30Well, this is Florida.
19:31You know, nobody really cares about Rolls Royces.
19:34He always said, if you have anything unique, please, please contact me.
19:39I like unique stuff.
19:40We created a boat truck.
19:43Really?
19:43Yeah.
19:43So we took a truck, and you could actually drive it on the street, and then you come to
19:48a ramp over here, a boat ramp, and suddenly you just drive it into the water.
19:52Never heard of anything like that.
19:53That's right.
19:53And I think this is something that we should discuss, and maybe I should show it to you
19:58and give you a demonstration of it.
20:01Yeah, let me think about that.
20:02I like to talk face to face.
20:04You know, the one-on-one selling is an old trade that's disappearing.
20:09Nobody, nobody has a boat truck.
20:13A what?
20:13A boat truck.
20:15A boat truck?
20:16Yeah.
20:16It's not a boat.
20:17It's a truck that is a boat truck.
20:21We sealed it.
20:22It's kind of waterproof.
20:23Okay.
20:24It floats.
20:24That's important.
20:25And it's something that you can share with all your clients.
20:29What do you got?
20:29Probably 100,000 clients.
20:31If I had 100,000 clients, I have my own yacht.
20:33I got news for you.
20:33You put that picture up, you'll get 100,000 clients.
20:35You're very good at your job, you know?
20:38This is a numbers game.
20:39And overall, I would rate today as 100%.
20:43I have three potential customers.
20:46We are going to sell that truck.
20:48Sure.
20:48So nice.
20:49Drinks aren't bad either.
20:50Let's do it.
20:58Ready?
21:02Oh!
21:04Is it showtime?
21:08Today's the day we're going to put this thing in the water and see if it actually flows.
21:12We stayed late last night.
21:13We've got the bow all put together.
21:15We've got the main flotation put together.
21:17I'm really excited to see what happens here.
21:19Let's go back with this thing and slide it in.
21:24What could go wrong?
21:26That's it.
21:27That's it.
21:31All right.
21:32Forward.
21:35Oh.
21:36How do you guys look on that back tire right now?
21:39Very close.
21:41Hey, Gus, start coming backwards a little bit.
21:47Okay.
21:47Yeah, come on down.
21:49We're going to see if our measurements worked out.
21:51We're going to see if this thing actually attaches to the truck and if all the clearances worked out.
21:55Push towards us.
21:56A little bit more.
21:58All right.
22:01Oh, it's going to be tight.
22:07Yeah, go, go.
22:08All right, go the other way.
22:09Oh, we got up all of them.
22:15Oh, my God.
22:17It looks so much tighter than I remember, right?
22:20You're, like, well inside of the range here.
22:26All right.
22:27Who's got an air hammer?
22:29That's going to be the only fix here.
22:33Every which way we move, we encroach on something else.
22:36I think what we do is air hammer the hell out of that for steering clearance.
22:39So we have the pontoons attached to the truck.
22:41We'll run into a problem.
22:42Can't go back any further.
22:43We're going to hit the rear tires.
22:43Where she sits now, the front tires can't turn.
22:46We're going to have to make some room.
22:47There's the right way, and then there's the fast way.
22:50Don't need a big old hammer for this son of a bitch.
22:54So today we're doing it the wrong way.
22:55We can get the sledgehammers out so we can get this thing in the water.
22:58And later on, we'll probably end up cutting, recapping, and give them the proper berth so they can swing.
23:02But before I spend any more time and money on this thing, I need to throw this thing in the water and see if it's going to work.
23:08All right.
23:08All right.
23:09Yeah, that's pretty good.
23:10Let's slide her in.
23:18Yeah, I'll be here Thursday, Friday, yeah.
23:21So you got a deal going?
23:22Yeah, with the Safari, 7.
23:24So you buy lunch or what?
23:26I buy lunch.
23:29Where's Frank?
23:30Oh, he's in the back over there.
23:31He's been hiding all day.
23:33He's been hiding?
23:34Why?
23:35It's because of that deal.
23:35You lost the deal.
23:36Oh, that $300,000 deal, yeah.
23:39Frankie, we got a buyer?
23:42Not yet, huh?
23:43You think you're going to find a buyer in that truck?
23:45I'm here so that I don't have to talk to you right now.
23:49What are you getting aggravated about?
23:52Let me go check on it.
23:53We'll take his pulse.
23:55Make sure he's breathing.
23:57I bust French chops a lot, and usually he busts them back to me.
24:01But at the end of the day, he's still my son, and I don't like to see him when he's down.
24:07Frankie, it's all good, man.
24:09It's all good.
24:10No worries about any of this.
24:12What are you talking about?
24:13I can see it.
24:14I can see the way you're stressing.
24:16I feel so bad.
24:17Why do you feel so bad?
24:18You're hiding.
24:20I'll be fine.
24:21I'll be out there in a little bit.
24:21Let me just make a couple more phone calls and get back to it, all right?
24:24All right.
24:24Love you, Mooch.
24:25I love you, buddy.
24:26Anything you need, I'll help you.
24:27Thanks, Dad.
24:28Love you.
24:28Okay.
24:35Yeah, you're fine on this side.
24:36You're clear.
24:38Let's see if it goes down this curb okay without grinding.
24:41Oh, my God.
24:41I'm so nervous.
24:42I can't believe you're not even nervous.
24:45We're doing a steady 25.
24:48You're also in, like, two lanes.
24:50I am in two lanes.
24:51But, you know, it's boat truck.
24:52I'm just happy you're driving it.
24:54I would never drive it.
24:56Feels like a regular truck.
24:57It's a boat.
25:00Boat truck.
25:00Going in the water today.
25:02I'm excited.
25:03I know it's going to float.
25:04In what fashion is it going to float is really my biggest concern.
25:07Well, I made it here.
25:08There's a high, high, high probability that you just, like, so.
25:13You guys ready?
25:14Let's do it, man.
25:15All right.
25:16So, here's my thoughts.
25:17We take that winch, hook it up to this truck, right?
25:21Inch down close to me.
25:22I think we've got more than enough spool there to find out if this thing floats, right?
25:25I want you to have the remote hooked up.
25:27Have your hand on that lock.
25:28And if it starts to sink, I'll say, pull me in, all right?
25:31I didn't put much floatation in the rear.
25:33I don't know if I over-calculated the weight of the engine up front, but I'm hopeful.
25:38One, two, three.
25:39Boat truck.
25:40That was very poorly planned.
25:42That was horrible, guys.
25:47I sell trucks by having fun with the truck.
25:49That's why I'm here.
25:50I need video, me on boat truck, middle of water, having fun.
25:54Because that's what people want to see.
25:56Before your maiden voyage, you have to christen your vessel.
26:00Oh, my God.
26:01You need provisions if we get stuck out at sea.
26:03Everybody knows I'm a big cultural guy.
26:05You don't put a boat in the water for its maiden voyage without christening her.
26:10Yeah!
26:11Woo-hoo!
26:13Boom!
26:13You've got to shatter a bottle to forget about it.
26:15Let's get this thing in the water.
26:20All right.
26:21We're going in.
26:22Jesse, you good?
26:23Yeah, we're good.
26:25Eliza, you watch for me.
26:26Let me know if this thing starts to float up.
26:27All right, you can straighten out there.
26:28You're good, honey.
26:29Oh, it's awesome.
26:31We have touchdown.
26:32Look, the front tire's locked up.
26:33We're just slipping along.
26:34I mean, they got the winch ready, so...
26:36If it doesn't float, this would just be a tremendous waste of time and money.
26:40Boat truck's going to float.
26:42Here we go.
26:44There, you touched down.
26:45Boat truck is in the water.
26:47We are in the water.
26:48If the nose goes down first and the engine's shot, then this is a water-damaged vehicle,
26:52it's a total waste.
26:53Here we go.
26:54Boat truck's going to float.
26:56I mean, they got the winch ready, so...
26:58Oh, it's pushing off.
26:59You're floating.
27:01I'm off?
27:01Pick this off.
27:02Keep going.
27:02Keep going.
27:03All right, how about the back?
27:05We're still on the ground?
27:05Come on, boat truck.
27:06Hey, guys, the front's up.
27:07Look at that.
27:08Front's up.
27:09The front tire's just come off the ground, and we're floating.
27:12We're floating!
27:13It's working!
27:14Two tires are on the ground, man.
27:16I can't believe it.
27:17I trust it.
27:18I can't either.
27:19Like, how level it is, right?
27:20My cut-off was, is there water in the cabin?
27:22We're miles away from getting water in the cabin.
27:24Superside!
27:25Cabagool!
27:26That's what we did.
27:27Boat truck is floating.
27:29As soon as boat truck starts floating, I put on the internet, and I sent to a bunch of
27:33people who laugh at stuff like this, and they're like, I need boat truck.
27:37How do I get boat truck?
27:38Because what's cooler than boat truck?
27:40Boat truck!
27:41We're floating!
27:42I really thought he sounded insane.
27:44But now that we're out there, and it floated great, and we're chilling, hanging out, I
27:48think it's a great thing to actually sell.
27:51Hey, put it in four by four!
27:53Hit it!
27:54See what happens.
27:56I need this!
27:56Whoa!
27:57All right, we gotta think about that.
27:59When we got this thing in gear, those tires are gonna be spinning.
28:01We gotta build, like, some kind of water shield there.
28:04Holy cow!
28:06This trip doesn't have a buyer yet, but I will say, we've built crazier stuff, and there's
28:10always that one person out there that's gonna be like, I need that thing.
28:14We'll see you in a couple weeks, all right?
28:16Get down!
28:18Get down!
28:19Get down!
28:28Whoa!
28:30What time did you get here to make this?
28:32Seven o'clock!
28:34We're like, it's done.
28:35Now that we know our flotation setup for the amphibious truck works, we can go on to the
28:40next phase, propulsion.
28:42The object here is to get it to go when you hit the gas, so it'll go in the water, just
28:46like it would on the road.
28:47You just hit the pedal, it starts accelerating.
28:50Genius, guys.
28:51Genius!
28:51Most shops, this is gonna be a technical doozy, right?
28:55But I've got an idea.
28:57I've got this patented axle that's got a driveshaft that goes right through it.
29:01It's a tandem passenger.
29:02The object is the first driveshaft turns, and it has an output on the backside that's
29:06also turning for the next axle.
29:09Instead of it feeding another axle behind it with a driveshaft to make it a tandem, it'll
29:13just speed our propeller, and that'll be it.
29:15Look at this.
29:17Over here.
29:18Are you sure that's the right direction?
29:21Good stuff, man.
29:25See?
29:26Yeah, perfect.
29:27That's it.
29:28It's good to go.
29:32Tight, tight?
29:35Hey, James, make sure she's in two-wheel drive.
29:38So we're about to test the propeller.
29:40We've never done this before.
29:41There's a lot of variables.
29:43It could come flying off.
29:44Ready?
29:45Let's see what she does.
29:46This thing comes flying off.
29:47It's going to do some damage.
29:49All right.
29:50Oh, it's working!
29:54Hell yeah.
29:55How fast is that?
29:5715.
29:58It's not vibrating or nothing like a jet.
30:01It looks like this is going to work.
30:03It's spinning in the right direction.
30:04The accelerates, we hit the gas.
30:05It didn't come flying off.
30:07I don't know anything about fluid dynamics,
30:09but that thing spinning that fast in the water
30:11has definitely got to do some damage.
30:13When we're done with the whole thing,
30:14we'll see if it actually works in the water,
30:16if it provides enough propulsion to move this thing along.
30:18But from where I'm standing,
30:20it looks like it's going to work.
30:21Oh, my God.
30:23All right, 50!
30:24All right, that's good!
30:25That's good!
30:27I can't believe that worked.
30:30Let's set this thing down.
30:31Let's get this bottle over to paint
30:33and finish this truck up.
30:42Romer!
30:44Imagine a boat, right?
30:45And the bottom,
30:46all navy blue down at the bottom, right?
30:48From there up, white,
30:50and then like a clean red pinstripe
30:51across the rest of it.
30:52Sweet.
30:52And I'm hoping this stuff
30:53can kind of help watertight it.
30:55Cool?
30:56It's going to look sweet.
30:57Oh, yeah.
30:58I'll get it to you as fast as I can, man.
30:59All right, take care.
31:00Thank you, buddy.
31:03I spent the past two days
31:14doing everything I can do
31:16to try to drum up
31:17some attention to this build.
31:19And then last night,
31:20out of the blue,
31:21I get a phone call,
31:22and it's a lead
31:22on the Defender 6x6.
31:28We're doing it, baby.
31:29I lost a deal,
31:30and I might have made one
31:31happen out of nowhere.
31:32Are you Jay?
31:33Yes, I am.
31:34Oh, man, awesome.
31:35Well, here it is.
31:36Come check it out, man.
31:37I brought one of your vehicles
31:39last year, the Hellfire.
31:40Amazing Luthorway drive.
31:41Oh, you have a Hellfire?
31:42No, I don't know that.
31:43Came down to this quick deal.
31:44Saw you guys post this online.
31:45Wanted to check it out myself.
31:46Mind if I get a sec?
31:47Please do.
31:47You got to hear this thing, bro.
31:49This is definitely your truck.
31:57Oh, man.
31:58Let's hop in.
31:58Let's take a ride.
31:59The price tag on this truck
32:01really narrows who's interested,
32:03because how many people
32:03could afford it?
32:04But that's why it's so power mount
32:06that I sell it now,
32:07while it's fresh,
32:09while it's hot,
32:09or it might take months
32:11to get someone else on board.
32:12Oh, it sounds so cool.
32:15Sounds amazing.
32:16You like it?
32:17Yeah, now what's the horsepower
32:18on this one?
32:18I think it's 520.
32:20That little gurgle it has?
32:21Yeah.
32:22It's cool.
32:23Am I losing anything
32:24with the extra weight,
32:25the extra axles?
32:26You're adding a lot more weight
32:27to the vehicle,
32:28but you're also
32:29fortifying everything, right?
32:31You put bigger wheels and tires.
32:33But it feels like you're in
32:33just like a brand new
32:35Carpathian edition Defender.
32:37It's obviously you're a car guy.
32:49You know, I'm not.
32:49I'm not a car guy at all.
32:51Are you an art guy?
32:52You know, I just like unique stuff.
32:54You know, everything I buy,
32:55I want it to be different.
32:57At this point,
32:57I feel like it's my sale to lose.
32:59I know exactly who Jay is.
33:01He wants to pull up
33:02and people to know
33:03I know whose truck that is,
33:04because there's only one
33:05in the world like it.
33:07And that is how you drive
33:10a 6x6, my friend.
33:13So talk to me.
33:14What do you think, Jay?
33:21You got Chiefs.
33:23You got Broncos.
33:24You got 6x6s.
33:25It doesn't end, right?
33:26Right.
33:27If we can conquer
33:28everything on land,
33:29maybe we can conquer
33:31everything on sea.
33:33Is that crazy?
33:34What?
33:35What are these things?
33:37Are these like torpedoes?
33:39What is this?
33:40Joe built an abomination,
33:42and now I have to go out there
33:43and dance for these people
33:45to try selling it.
33:46It's ridiculous.
33:47I give you boat truck.
33:48My goodness.
33:49Cortland boat truck.
33:51That's crazy.
33:52This thing floats.
33:53This thing steers.
33:54You'll never see anything like this.
33:56Was Cortland actually
33:57interested in boat truck,
33:59or was he just being
33:59a nice guy to me?
34:00I don't know.
34:01This is a little monster.
34:02My gut tells me
34:04no one will ever
34:05like that truck.
34:06He was definitely
34:06just being nice to me
34:07because it's hideous.
34:08Put it on the radar,
34:09for sure.
34:10I love that.
34:13Talk to me.
34:14What do you think, Jay?
34:15It's everything
34:16you could ever think of doing,
34:18and it's the first ever
34:20new edition Defender 6x6.
34:22Online, you guys said
34:23it's going to be a one-on-one,
34:24so you guys are done
34:25after this, right?
34:26Never been done before.
34:27Will never be done again.
34:28Okay.
34:29All week, I feel cursed,
34:32and I'm riding high
34:33that I have an ability
34:34to sell this guy, Jay,
34:35right now,
34:36but this is a $350,000 truck.
34:38Is that easy
34:39for everyone to buy?
34:40No.
34:41Fully loaded,
34:42the biggest trim you can get.
34:44Gotcha.
34:44We cut it,
34:45we extended it,
34:46and we brought it back
34:47to the heritage days
34:48of the greatest
34:49off-roading vehicle
34:50of all time.
34:52So the only thing
34:52I'd want to do
34:53is add some lights
34:54to the front,
34:55and we're in business.
34:57Just like that?
34:57Just like that.
34:58Good things
34:59to come easy, buddy.
35:01Congratulations, Jay.
35:02Thank you, thank you.
35:03You are some level
35:04of awesome, my friend.
35:06I don't know,
35:07did I put this out
35:08in the universe
35:08and it just showed up for me?
35:10You know, like,
35:11you take the lowest low
35:13and then just go
35:13to the highest high.
35:14Dude,
35:15best vehicle
35:16ever made.
35:19Love it.
35:21Absolutely.
35:23Let's get it done.
35:28You guys excited
35:29to see the boat truck?
35:32Oh, yeah.
35:32I can't remember.
35:33Isn't it awesome?
35:34He told me to party.
35:35Oh, look at this guy
35:36rolling and balling.
35:38Get out,
35:39we're going to see
35:39the boat truck.
35:40Look, guys, Grandpa.
35:41Oh!
35:41We are here
35:42to look at the boat truck.
35:44I have two clients
35:45that I thought
35:46would be perfect
35:46for this opportunity.
35:48One of them
35:48is a boat broker
35:49and one of them
35:50is a potential customer
35:51that bought a truck
35:52from us before.
35:53Both of them
35:54have opportunities
35:54for me to sell.
35:56Boat truck,
35:56you ready for that?
35:57Well, I see it.
35:57See it.
35:58Jeez.
35:58I've seen the early stages
36:00of boat truck
36:00and it was amazing.
36:02I can only imagine
36:03what it looks like now.
36:04Let's go see
36:05this monstrosity.
36:09I don't see it.
36:11Is that it in there?
36:11Where?
36:14Oh, my God.
36:16Look at this.
36:20That's insane.
36:23No way.
36:25Kids, look.
36:26And just like that, baby,
36:28boat truck is among us.
36:29I didn't believe it.
36:30I didn't believe it
36:30for a second.
36:31And you thought about it.
36:32You guys are messing with me.
36:33Look at the stance on her.
36:35Even the way she takes the water,
36:36it's unbelievable.
36:39Boat truck.
36:40Boat truck.
36:41Boat truck.
36:41Boat truck.
36:43Oh, my God.
36:45Come on.
36:46Are you a believer or what?
36:47Oh, my God.
36:48You did it.
36:49What a job.
36:54What did you think of that?
36:55That's unreal, man.
36:56I was very skeptical.
36:58When I heard about the boat truck,
37:00I couldn't imagine how a truck
37:01that could weigh as much as a Jeep
37:03could actually float
37:04and make it through the water.
37:05And I'm blown away.
37:07Gigantic rudder.
37:08It's removable.
37:08You pull this thing off,
37:09you can throw it in the tailgate, right?
37:10You don't need to have it
37:11with you all the time.
37:12Then you've got this gigantic prop
37:13back there.
37:14And that's tied right to the back
37:15of our axle.
37:16That's a tandem pass-through axle.
37:18So as the driveshaft turns,
37:19it turns one-to-one.
37:20What am I looking at here?
37:21It looks like a Jeep,
37:23but it also looks like a boat.
37:24This is the coolest thing
37:25I've seen in a very long time.
37:26I did not pick this name.
37:28That is not marketing-approved boat truck.
37:30How is that not marketing?
37:31It's a boat,
37:33and it's a truck.
37:35And if you put it together,
37:36you got boat truck.
37:37How don't you get that?
37:38I just give up.
37:40What would you come up with?
37:41Something that has to do with water.
37:44Something to do with water and a truck.
37:46I mean,
37:46it definitely looks way cooler
37:48than when I saw them
37:49put this thing together
37:50in the shop.
37:51But I'm still,
37:52I'm still not convinced.
37:54Not 100%.
37:55You're going to love it, Mac.
37:56Look, look at this.
37:57Look at this.
37:58Oh, it goes under.
38:00Let's go!
38:01Bon voyage!
38:04I wouldn't believe it
38:05until I got in here.
38:06What do you think?
38:07It's pretty crazy.
38:08You want to drive?
38:09Yeah.
38:10Dude?
38:10Hell yeah.
38:11All right, let's go for it.
38:12Oh, my God.
38:13You guys are changing seats?
38:14Yeah, let him drive.
38:15Oh, my God.
38:17I'll just hang out on here,
38:19to be honest.
38:19Hey, do you know how
38:20to drive a Gladiator in the water?
38:21I've never driven a Jeep
38:22in the water before.
38:24Oh, God.
38:25This is crazy.
38:27You see it out there,
38:28are you thinking of anyone?
38:29There's got to be someone
38:29you have in mind.
38:30I mean, I'm not going to lie to you.
38:32I have a couple people
38:33that I think would love
38:33something like this.
38:35So, Matt,
38:35you know why you're here, right?
38:36Yes.
38:37You're here to buy a truck.
38:38But the question is,
38:39since I've already got
38:39this exact same truck,
38:41if we could do this
38:43to the truck I already have,
38:44I'd be more interested
38:45in doing that
38:46than buying this one.
38:48Oh, absolutely.
38:49The kit idea
38:50is a really good idea
38:51because it takes a lot
38:52for somebody to commit.
38:53My car is now
38:54boat truck forever.
38:55Bolt this thing on,
38:56boat truck for the weekend,
38:57and it's something
38:58I can mass produce
38:59and we can sell a lot of.
39:00Just swing by the shop,
39:01we'll put it on for you,
39:02you're off.
39:03That would be awesome.
39:04Talk about the best
39:04of both worlds.
39:05I love this thing,
39:06the fact they can do it
39:07as a kit,
39:07let's box it up.
39:08I gotta have it.
39:09Max has got a truck,
39:12he's gonna bring
39:13his truck in
39:14and we're gonna turn
39:14it into boat truck
39:15number two.
39:16Boat truck number two!
39:17Boat truck number two!
39:19Tremendous.
39:20SS boat truck number two.
39:21Go with, baby,
39:22I'm ready!
39:23I brought provisions, baby!
39:26Go with the pilot
39:27and everything.
39:28Eat your heart out,
39:29Blackbeard,
39:29it's black mustache.
39:31Fire the cannon!
39:34I'm really proud
39:34of the build
39:35because it didn't come out
39:36complex and cockamamie.
39:38It was like a very simple,
39:39straightforward,
39:40reliable thing.
39:41When you think about boats,
39:42you never think of
39:43being reliable.
39:44This thing,
39:44you take it in and out
39:45and try it over and over
39:46and it never broke down,
39:47nothing failed.
39:48Really impressed with it.
39:49I congratulate the two of you
39:51on the sale.
39:52Congratulate both of us?
39:53Well, the big fare
39:54was all bad.
39:55It really was.
39:56Today was a great day.
39:57I think we should celebrate.
39:59Yeah?
39:59I think we should all celebrate.
40:00Yes.
40:01Right now, baby!
40:02Straight!
40:02What's that time?
40:03Get two!
40:04Oh, my God.
40:06He's such a maniac.
40:07Oh, Jack!
40:08Are you crazy?
40:12Take one.
40:14Greg, how does it feel?
40:15You're relieved
40:16that you found someone
40:17to pick up and have
40:17on that Defender project?
40:19I don't know how it works out,
40:20but it's like,
40:21you get to your lowest
40:22and then something
40:22brings you right back up.
40:24I can't believe
40:25that I sold the Defender again.
40:26Wow.
40:27Second time.
40:27Oh, my God.
40:28I can't believe you did that.
40:29Yeah, I finally sold it.
40:31Yeah?
40:31Guy's cool as hell.
40:32Maybe owns a bunch
40:33of cell phones stores.
40:34Real cool guy.
40:35Sounds like somebody I know.
40:36Is it Jay?
40:37How do you know Jay?
40:38I told him to come see you.
40:40Really?
40:40Of course.
40:41What'd you think?
40:42You just walked in
40:42and somebody wants
40:43to buy a Defender?
40:44I saw him in a truck
40:45like a year and a half ago.
40:46Are you messing with me?
40:47No, I'm not messing with you.
40:48Why wouldn't you just
40:49take him for yourself?
40:49Because that's not
40:50the way I do things.
40:52Oh.
40:53Yeah, because I love you.
40:54Is everybody ready?
40:57Hit those horns!
40:59This weekend
41:00is the Palm Beach
41:01International Boat Show.
41:02Last year,
41:03we did 15 trucks.
41:04I would like to hit 25 cars.
41:06That's the expectation.
41:10The new electric hummer
41:11just came out,
41:12and we're going to turn
41:13this thing into a monster.
41:15There is no kit off the shelf
41:16we can buy for this.
41:17We're going to have to make
41:18everything from scratch.
41:20See these cars out there?
41:21The cars that we want
41:22to drive over.
41:23Oh my gosh, Joe, fuck!
41:26Joe, I don't like it.
