01:23Let's go
01:24Oh, it's gorgeous
01:25Lovely
01:26Yes, let's go
01:27So far, we've traveled with two cruise ships as they've criss-crossed the globe
01:32Woohoo!
01:34But now, the new Stattendam is sailing solo
01:38This time, the ship docks in Portugal for a Kate and Leo moment
01:44You could do that Titanic thing there, like
01:46And an excursion in Tenerife leaves no scope to wriggle off the hook
01:50We will catch fishing
01:52We will catch fishing
02:02One of the newest and largest ships in the Holland America Line Fleet
02:06The new Stattendam is a palatial floating home to nearly 4,000 passengers and crew
02:12I have your sushi plate here, please enjoy everyone
02:16With around one crew member for every two passengers
02:20The ship offers holidaymakers the chance to not lift a finger
02:24Unless they have activities planned
02:26Hello, good morning
02:27For those staying on the ship, there's something for everyone
02:30Please enjoy class atmosphere
02:33Be it watching a big showbiz spectacular
02:36Learning recipes and top foodie tips from the chefs
02:40It's always skin set first, so you make sure that your skin is crispy
02:44Or floristry fundamentals from an expert
02:47Poke it into the air, just like that
02:50And you can insert one single flower on it
02:53Wow
02:54And that's not counting the excursions
02:57Good morning
02:58Thank you
02:59There's a range on offer on this two-week voyage from Dover to Europe and North Africa
03:05With destinations including the Canary Islands, Portugal and Morocco
03:11The excursions provide a taste of different countries
03:21And the ship's chefs often complement the experience by offering local specialities
03:27Chef, can you show me how many washable you make already?
03:31But on any cruise, traditional favourites rank high too, from ice cream to steak
03:38And the same applies to breakfast treats
03:40Work to create them for the ship's Lido buffet and other restaurants starts in the early hours
03:46While passengers are still fast asleep
03:48Today we're going to the bakery
03:50Today we're going to the bakery
03:51Because in one hour we're going to open the Lido breakfast
03:55I'm going to check if the bread already done
03:59To check the quality, the quantity
04:01Jundiel Marcelo from the Philippines is the executive chef on board
04:07Working on the ship, you are catering for about 4,000
04:12But of course, I have a lot of team members
04:16So I can overview all the operation through the help of my colleagues
04:22This is our bakery
04:25Here, six staff work shifts to produce over 3,000 bakery items every day
04:31Good morning, good morning
04:35The busiest time in bakery is early in the morning
04:394 o'clock, while all the guests are sleeping
04:42So here, we are preparing batch freshly bread
04:46We have the rolls already, it's about 500
04:50We have the freshly baked muffin, beautiful muffin
04:53It's about 350 pieces
04:55Oh, I love to eat this one, very nice
04:58And the cinnamon bun, the freshly cinnamon bun
05:01It's about 300 pieces also
05:03It's very challenging, to be honest
05:06Because we are preparing thousands of bread assorted every day
05:1197% are fresh
05:13Of course, the danishes, which is about 1,000 pieces
05:18And the freshly croissant
05:22The first batch is about 450
05:25Croissants are the most popular pastry on board
05:28With 600 baked fresh every day
05:31And they're handcrafted by chief baker, Dexter Soriano from the Philippines
05:36Good morning, Dex
05:37Good morning, Jaya
05:38Are we ready?
05:39Excellent
05:40Okay, let's start
05:41Good morning
05:42Dexter, our chief baker on boards
05:44Very talented
05:45Very skillful
05:46And very hard-working person
05:48He has the hand of being a baker
05:51Now, not everybody has the skills, no?
05:54To knead the bread passionately
05:57It's all about the hands
05:58He has the skills
05:59What is your technique?
06:01The technique in baking croissants
06:02Sound like this?
06:04Backward, yeah
06:08That's great
06:09It's easy
06:10But me, I prepared like this
06:11Because I follow my hands like this
06:16Yeah
06:18Wow, that's nice, beautiful
06:22So, how do you think my piece of artwork here?
06:26It's the same, like a pro
06:28No, this is more beautiful, Dexter
06:31The breakfast buffet opens at 5.30 a.m.
06:38So, it's all systems go
06:40In 30 minutes, we're gonna need to open the Lido buffet
06:44Guys, let's go, let's go
06:47There's just enough time to admire the baker's handiwork
06:51Nice chocolate croissant, nice blueberry
06:53Nice, good job, good job, guys
06:55Good job
06:56Okay, let's close everything
06:58And then we will go now
07:02But soon, peckish passengers will be up and about
07:05Surveying the buffet counters
07:08Everything that we prepared downstairs
07:10We were setting off here
07:12Although most of the pastries have already been cooked in the bakery
07:16Shundio's cooking some dough in the buffet oven
07:19To tantalize their taste buds
07:21We can freshly bake here
07:23So, the guests will smell the freshly baked breads
07:29Okay, freshly baked
07:35The guests will hear the sounds of the oven
07:37So, they will recognize everything is fresh
07:41They will smell the lovely and beautiful croissant every morning
07:46Oh, they smell, man
07:48Mmm, butter
07:50Ah!
07:56The aroma of freshly baked pastries is irresistible to most passengers
08:01And they throng to the ship's Lido buffet for breakfast
08:04But some
08:07Morning room service
08:09Prefer the gentler start of breakfast in bed
08:13Can we have the fried eggs and the frittata, please?
08:16Room service operates 24-7 on board
08:20But breakfast is by far the most requested meal
08:23There's no sausage here?
08:25There's no sausage here?
08:26There's no sausage
08:27There's no sausage
08:28Okay, there's no sausage
08:29Okay, there's no sausage
08:30Okay, that's good
08:31In the main kitchen, sous chef Santosh Narayanan from India
08:34Is overseeing the orders
08:36It's really busy
08:37We do around 300 American and 300 Continental
08:41So you can see your scrambled eggs, bacon
08:44While bacon and eggs are always a top choice
08:49Passengers seeking something special
08:51Can treat themselves to a breakfast
08:53That's a little more upmarket
08:55Okay, do you have an order for the lobster and the continental breakfast?
09:00And one cabin has opted for the most opulent of all
09:03Lobster Benedict
09:05Can you prepare one lobster Benedict, please?
09:09On an average two-week cruise, passengers on the new Staten Dam polish off over 750 kilos of lobster
09:18We use a whole lobster for it, so we make sure they get nice portions
09:24In this luxurious breakfast dish, the lobster meat is lightly sautéed in butter
09:30And served on a toasted muffin with runny poached eggs
09:33All coated in a lemon-scented hollandaise sauce
09:37Wow, really full
09:38Beautiful
09:39Nice, okay
09:40It's ready to go
09:41Wow
09:42Nice
09:43Very nice
09:44Okay, ready to go now
09:45Let's go
09:46Let's go
09:47Let's go
09:55For some, foodie indulgences are the highlight of cruising
09:59But for others, it's the excursions that stand out most
10:03Voyaging from port to port offers quite literally a world of possibilities
10:08Wow, this is good, isn't it? Hey
10:10From hair-raising road trips
10:12Oh, way to go
10:14To watching nature in all its majesty
10:18Hey, how's somebody out up there?
10:20Oh my god
10:21Absolutely amazing
10:24Or getting hands-on with mother earth
10:27I have to ask if he's taking apprentices here
10:30The Portuguese city of Porto is the starting point for today's adventures
10:37With its center now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Porto has been a key trading city on this stretch of coast since Roman times
10:45Famed for its wines and salted Atlantic cod
10:52Unfortunately, it's not famed for perpetual sunshine
10:55Everybody with their rain jackets on
10:58Determined not to let the rain pour cold water on their experience
11:02Niha and mum Ash from Romford are preparing for a trip ashore
11:06Have you seen the skies outside? It looks like England
11:09Oh, lovely
11:10I thought I was in Dover for a second
11:12Mine is the White Cliffs
11:15From the news, England's got heat wave
11:21With no such luck in Porto, protective measures are called for
11:25Going to put the rain covers on, otherwise everything gets soaking wet
11:29It looks like a nappy, but that's how you're going to tie it
11:39Giving the great outdoors a miss for now
11:43Morning room service
11:44A honeymooning couple from Florida
11:48Good morning, Miss Michelle
11:50Yes
11:51How are you today?
11:52Good, how are you?
11:53Very fine
11:54Kim is a seasoned sailor
11:56That is great, thank you
11:57Thank you
11:58Thank you so much
11:59Please enjoy your breakfast
12:00But for first time cruising Michelle, it's a whole new experience
12:03What would you like first?
12:04Everything
12:05Everything
12:06Everything?
12:07Yeah
12:08This is fun
12:10It's like we're playing like a tea party
12:12This is my first time eating on a bed
12:14Mom would flip up
12:15Oh yeah, right
12:16This would never go well
12:17Don't ever tell mom
12:20I cannot believe we ordered all this food
12:23I met Lobster Benedict since we got here
12:25I'm so excited for the Lobster Benny
12:27Mmm
12:28So, how's that?
12:30Mmm
12:32It's very good
12:33Good
12:34I'm not sure I'm going to be ready to go back home
12:37I am definitely enjoying this break from the 9 to 5
12:42And so this is just like a good indulgence
12:45Fresh cruise
12:46Mm-hmm
12:47How are you feeling?
12:48If you would have told me that I could get Lobster Benedict in bed
12:51I think we would have signed up a long time ago
12:55We would have been here quicker
13:01Despite the deluge, Ash and Neha are embarking on their excursion
13:06It's going to be a lovely day today
13:08This is wonderful
13:09A lovely port of call
13:11And the ship gets a good clean up too
13:16They booked to go on a boat trip
13:18On the historic waterways of the city of Aveiro
13:21Just south of Porto
13:23It's going to be a little adventure
13:26Discovering what they've got to offer us
13:28I really hope it's not one of those open boats you see over there
13:33We'll get pretty wet today
13:34We'll get pretty wet today
13:35I think we might get wet
13:36I think we might get wet
13:45At Aveiro, a coastal city of canals of a salt lagoon just south of Porto
13:50Miha and Mum Ash are heading for their excursion on a traditional boat
13:55Hopes pinned on cover from the elements
13:58Oh!
13:59Oh, it is an outdoor boat
14:01Oh, I've got a key
14:04Thank you
14:05You know
14:06Oh!
14:08Thank you
14:09Oh, it's slippery
14:11Flat-bottomed cargo boats, known locally as Moliseiros
14:14Were for centuries used to navigate the shallow waters of Aveiro's Lagoon
14:19Oh, nice
14:21This is exciting
14:23Nowadays, the boats are mainly used for river tours
14:26And taking Ash and Niha out on one today is tour guide Ezekiel Roseham
14:32We are going to start talking about this little boat that we are riding in
14:36This over here is a Moliseiro
14:38The Moliseiro
14:39It's a typical boat from the city of Aveiro
14:41That before used to carry a seaweed that was called Moliso
14:46The seaweeds were very important for the city
14:48We didn't trade anything
14:49So everything we consumed over here, we needed to produce over here
14:53That's why the seaweeds were very important for using them as fertilizer
14:57And the salt at that time was the main economic activity of the city
15:02Because the fishing boats didn't have electricity
15:04So the main way and the only way that they had to preserve the fish was by placing salt on it
15:10Wow
15:11So is the seaweed edible? Can you eat it?
15:13That's what I was thinking
15:14No, normally we don't eat it, huh?
15:16No
15:17No
15:18It stinks
15:19Yeah
15:20Only for fertilizer
15:25Until the 17th century, the Aveiro salt flats were a vital part of this coast's economy
15:32By 1970, they still covered an area equivalent to two and a half thousand football pitches
15:38But the industry has declined steeply since then
15:41After we turn the boat, if you want to stand up to see the salt flats, you can see them better, okay?
15:47You can climb it over here
15:48I'm not going to be that brave
15:50This moves, but don't fall, huh? Don't worry
15:52You sure?
15:53Yeah
15:54It's okay, I'm holding on
15:56You can see the salt pools over there
15:58While the view may be better from up here, Ash seems more impressed by Ezekiel's boatmanship skills
16:06So you're quite confident standing there, being master of ship, not, you know, the boat not moving here and there
16:12No, I'm a good sailor
16:14Never falls
16:15Always dives, huh?
16:16Right
16:17It's been well balanced
16:19Yes, I suppose
16:20You could do that Titanic thing there, no?
16:23Thanks to its many canals, Aveiro is sometimes called the Portuguese Venice
16:33And with canals comes bridges
16:36Yay!
16:38Perhaps the most charming is the Ponte La Suche de Amazade, or the bridge of friendship ties
16:45There's a lot of bridges with ribbons on it, so it's quite a lot, aren't they?
16:51I thought it was just the one, but there seems to be several
16:54We have five bridges of love
16:55Oh, five, yeah
16:56A lot of love here in Aveiro
16:57Is it like a tradition?
16:58For the time, for the age of the city, it's a very recent tradition
17:02We started putting the locks, but we have a lot of humidity here in Aveiro because we are very near to the sea
17:08They started to rust, so we tried to change for the ribbons and then we got right up
17:14This over here was the first bridge of love and friendship
17:17I think it's really beautiful, the people here
17:19Yeah
17:20And we're never taking them out
17:22And as Ezekiel's tour comes to an end, Ash and Neha have time to reflect on their loving ties
17:34It's great having time on a one-to-one with everybody, like, you know, family time with us together
17:39Yeah
17:40It's not something, you know, we get a lot of time to, so, I mean, you'll be going to uni or you'll be busy
17:47Yeah
17:48And the only time we have spent, we spend together is on holidays together, so
17:52Yeah
17:53It's nice to be here and it's nice to crack jokes and have a laugh
17:55Yeah
17:56It's just loads of fun singing stuff as well
17:58Yeah, doing things together and, yeah, I think it's a good holiday
18:02At least it stopped raining
18:05That was lovely, it was nice and relaxing
18:11It's really nice to spend time together and do these excursions because, well, mum works a lot
18:17And we don't get to see each other, you know, as much as we are on holiday, so it's good to spend time together
18:23It started off in a horrible rainy day, but day just got better
18:32The cruise around Europe and North Africa has many ports of call
18:46And as it approaches a new one, there's the prospect of an even brighter day
18:51But it'll be a few hours before sunrise reveals the landscapes of Tenerife
18:56Heading is one, three, three, and twelve and a half knots
18:59One, two, three, twelve and a half knots
19:01With the ship now just a few miles from shore
19:12Good morning, Captain, you're opening up portside preparing ladder
19:17The safety of the entire vessel is in the hands of British security officer Rich Fontaine
19:25A task made even more daunting by the near total darkness outside
19:30It's ten to six in the morning
19:34Our boatmen here are opening up the door
19:37We're gonna rig the ladder, just waiting on the pilot now
19:40And then we can make our way into the dock
19:43A local pilot with in-depth knowledge of the port's waters, tidal patterns, and potential obstacles
19:50Needs to come on board to help the navigation team steer the super vessel safely into harbour
19:56You know, everybody has to stay alert
19:58The boatmen, sailors, they're all strapped in with their harness and everything
20:03And their life jackets on
20:05And I will just make sure that they are doing it safely
20:08Any fall into water would be extremely dangerous
20:13But in the darkness, such an accident would be even more perilous
20:17Okay
20:18You okay?
20:19Thank you
20:20Bridge, pilot break, ladder rig ready and tested on the port side
20:26That's the ladder rig, so we're just waiting for the pilot to arrive now
20:31Arriving on a 12 metre long boat, the challenge is for the two moving vessels to navigate alongside each other
20:40So the pilot can board
20:42We want to make sure that we actually get the ship alongside
20:46With everybody still safe
20:48Bridge, pilot break, pilot boat alongside
20:52It can be, it can be a hazardous area
20:55You have to keep your wits about you
20:57I've never lost anyone yet
20:58So, I'm gonna keep it that way
21:01Until my wife tells me to retire
21:08Pilot on the ladder
21:10Pilot on board, one of the few sir
21:15Can you see your hands?
21:16Yes, sir
21:17All good, pilot on board on his way to the bridge
21:23We've probably got 15 minutes or so before we open up the doors
21:29Ready to put the gangway out
21:31Time for a quick coffee then
21:34Out on deck, high above
21:41With most of the passengers still asleep
21:44Welcome to Tenerife
21:46Oh my gosh, I'm so excited
21:48Honeymooners Kim and Michelle from Florida
21:51Are skipping the Lobster Benedict today
21:53In favour of experiencing the sail into port
21:57Look how it cascades up
21:59So that has to be a little hill up top
22:01Yeah
22:02Frequent anglers when at home in Florida
22:05The pair have also booked an excursion
22:07To cast off in these waters
22:10Are you excited to catch the Lisa Ma fish?
22:13You sound really excited
22:18It's not even daylight and you're in competition mode
22:21I'm not a morning person but I'm always competitive
22:27This was beautiful but
22:28Do you want to go get coffee before fish?
22:30Yes, definitely
22:31Tenerife
22:36Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands
22:38Lies 200 miles off the west coast of Africa
22:41One of its most dramatic features
22:44Is the volcano of Teide
22:46At 3,175 metres
22:49More than two and a half times the height of Ben Nevis
22:52It's a major tourist attraction
22:54But so is the coast
22:55Which remains mild and sunny for much of the year
22:58Last year Tenerife attracted over 7 million visitors
23:03Including many fishing enthusiasts
23:05And Kim and Michelle are amongst this year's
23:08We're here!
23:10I'm so excited
23:13Thanks to its deep ocean trenches
23:15Volcanic reefs
23:16Volcanic reefs
23:17And warm sub-tropical currents
23:19The island's coastal waters are a prime habitat for around 400 fish species
23:25Oh my goodness
23:26Look at this cute fiat
23:28Oh my gosh, that's so cute
23:30Showing Kim and Michelle the ropes and the rods
23:33Is expat Gavin Glenn
23:35Who's got 35 years experience
23:37Oh, this is it
23:39Captain Gavin?
23:40Hello
23:41Hello
23:42Hey, I'm Gavin
23:43Captain Gavin, nice to meet you
23:44Captain Gavin, nice to meet you
23:45Okay, so anyway, there's your life jackets
23:47All the fishing rods are all ready
23:49Great!
23:50Oh, we're excited
23:51We're looking forward to it
23:52Yeah
23:53Okay
23:58Whoo!
23:59Whoo!
24:02We're definitely gonna play with some new rods
24:04I'm used to the sail away
24:05Where's the champagne?
24:06That's right
24:10Gavin runs sustainable fishing trips
24:12Which means that the fish caught often go back into the sea
24:15To help protect the marine ecosystem
24:18Wow, this is some new scenery for us
24:20Oh my gosh
24:22The warm Atlantic water is home to some of the largest fish in the ocean
24:26Including yellow and bluefin tuna
24:29And even marlin
24:30Which can be up to 14 feet long
24:33Okay, what do you think you'll catch?
24:36I'm catching...
24:37I'm catching a marlin
24:38Oh!
24:40Okay
24:41I don't...
24:42No, I think a tuna
24:43A tuna
24:44Okay
24:45A tuna the size of...
24:46You
24:47Me
24:48Okay
24:49We're gonna need a lot of help for that one
24:56Thinking big comes naturally to the ship's florist too
24:59Filipino Novencadano
25:00Filipino Novencadano can create anything
25:02From small bouquets for individual passengers
25:05To the grandest of display pieces
25:08Whenever I got time to see flowers, it makes me happy
25:11It's my first love
25:14So we're gonna have this one
25:16A sailboat flower arrangement
25:19This is for the ocean bar
25:21Actually this is one of the signatures on this ship
25:28In my own opinion
25:30This gives positivity for the guests
25:35Actually my grandma
25:36She's the one who inspired me about this flower thing
25:40Novencadano's responsibilities include 146 flower arrangements
25:46Throughout the ship
25:47In restaurants, suites, communal lounges
25:50And even by the pools
25:52You can do like 50 flower arrangements in just an hour
25:57Actually for this type of arrangement
25:59It takes around five minutes only
26:02Because I'm using sharp knife
26:05It's not just a regular knife
26:09But it's for florist knife for this one
26:13It's normal for the florist to cut the fingers
26:18But lucky for me, I still have ten fingers
26:22Most of the time I don't have any plans
26:25Of what's the outcome
26:26It just depends on my hands whatever
26:28That I could create with this magic hand
26:31For each week of a cruise
26:34Noven takes delivery
26:35Of over 1,500 stems of flowers and greenery
26:39Featuring around 40 different species
26:42Like for the roses
26:43I have three varieties of roses
26:46The Ecuadorian roses, the English roses
26:49And some of those
26:52Like this one
26:53It's the seasonal flowers
26:54I only receive them during
26:57If the ship is in Europe
27:00If we are the ships in Caribbean
27:02Most of the flowers that I receive are tropicals
27:05If the ship cross into Europe
27:07It's different varieties as well
27:10Like tulips
27:12Some of those beautiful roses
27:15So this is it
27:17And this one we're going to be on the ocean bar
27:22If you really love your job
27:24It comes with love and passion with it
27:27As long as I get excited to open every box with fresh flowers
27:34I will still going to love this one
27:36Maybe for a lifetime
27:38On their fishing trip, Kim and Michelle are contemplating the start of their lifetime together
27:41It's six months since their wedding and they have plans for a second honeymoon
27:56So is this honeymoon point one?
28:01Let's just stop calling them honeymoons
28:03Right, who cares?
28:04It's all honey
28:05It's all sweet
28:07Sweet friends
28:08Well I still need my actual honeymoon then
28:09Okay
28:10Okay
28:11No matter when the honeymoon period ends
28:13These two are certainly no strangers to travel
28:17Or indeed fishing
28:19We have been doing fishing for such a long time
28:21We've done both sides of Florida several times
28:25And then we've gone to Costa Rica as well
28:28Puerto Rico
28:30And probably a few other places
28:32Almost anywhere we go
28:33As long as it is seaside
28:35We are chartering a boat
28:37Yeah
28:38So yeah, probably for the next 3.3 honeymoons
28:42We'll do it again
28:45Captain Gavin uses prawns as bait to catch the smaller fish
28:49But Kim and Michelle are keen to try fish whispering
28:53Hey fish
28:54Hey fish
28:57Hey fish
28:58Oh, you know why they're not coming?
29:01You're saying it in English
29:02Oh
29:03Yes, in Spanish
29:04Oh
29:05Hola pesca
29:07Pescados
29:08Pescados
29:09Pescados
29:19I have quite expensive taste our fish
29:20We've got some lovely prawns here
29:21Wow
29:23Newlyweds Kim and Michelle have traded in their cruise ship
29:26For a day's fishing in Tenerife
29:28From a small boat
29:29With Captain Gavin
29:31Would you like to put it under your arm there
29:33And shape the tip down and win
29:35So
29:36Yep
29:37Yep, and they'll close the bail arm and win
29:42I might have something
29:43Something very small
29:44Not the big one we're looking for
29:46Do you have something over there?
29:47No
29:48Okay, don't look
29:49I think it's really small
29:50Keep fishing
29:51No, it's gone
30:01You got something?
30:02I caught nothing
30:03Oh
30:04He's gonna live to fight another day
30:08Alright, so what happens if neither one of us catch a fish?
30:11Not happening
30:12We will catch fish today
30:14I will dive in head first
30:16If not, we're going fishing in the bait box
30:22But something's gonna end up on this hook
30:24Promise you that
30:29Alright, you have another fighting chance
30:31Will I load this up really quick?
30:34Otherwise drinks are on you tonight
30:36That's fine, the drinks are on the cruise
30:39Recreational fishing is popular in Tenerife
30:42But a commercial fishing sector remains too
30:46Its catches such as sardines, pollock, mackerel, and grouper
30:49Feature in the local cuisine
30:51But it appears there won't be much left to go on Kim and Michelle's plates
30:56Are you getting bites?
30:57No
30:59Are you?
31:00I definitely am
31:04I think I got something
31:05Yeah, here's weight on it
31:08Got something?
31:09Yeah
31:12Yeah
31:18Woohoo!
31:19Yeah
31:20Yes
31:22What is this?
31:24Uh, this one with Kim is the, uh, bogger
31:26And he's a, uh, bite fish here as well
31:29It's not quite the catch Kim was hoping for
31:33Even though we didn't catch much, this was very successful
31:35What do you think?
31:37I mean, if you look at
31:40where we are right now can't get much better than this very true very true guess we gotta
31:45reel it back in sounds good okay are you saying that because you won yep
31:55port days when most guests are out on excursions are an opportunity for crew to tackle tasks in
32:00passenger areas the ship has a number of ornamental plants and today florist noven has some of the
32:06most impressive ones on his to-do list um today it's a schedule for watering and trimming this palm
32:15tree just to keep them refreshed it is really really really big thing to keep this palm tree alive
32:25up until the end of the cruise or else we're gonna go home early the ship has nine palm trees all
32:33around the pool area and they require regular tlc to remain as smart as their surroundings
32:40hey young good morning yes can you please to hold me this ladder for me for a while
32:49the cruise ship operates in different climates all over the world but the plants on board don't
32:54always enjoy the journey the edge of this palm tree started to burn especially we're all the way
33:02from caribbean this has started to be darkened i have to trim a little bit
33:09if the weather is hot the palm tree will gonna be dried up easily and here in europe the weather is
33:17too cold and the leaves were gonna be also frozen and started to be uh darkened
33:27this is very uh normal thing to trim the edges cutting the leaf with this one couldn't kill the
33:35the leaf but just trim with this edge only it will gonna be fine
33:41probably i would prefer with fresh flowers than dealing with this palm tree but it's always been
33:52part of my job to take good care with the ornamental plants on board
33:56one down now and we have eight more palm tree to go
34:11on the ocean kim and michelle haven't caught their tuna or marlin or indeed anything big enough to take
34:17home the fish might not be hungry today but they are so it's back to the ship for a proper fish supper
34:24we're gonna get on the ship and find the fish we did not fish
34:31we're gonna go eat some fish that we thought we were gonna be filleting here
34:34and cooking but that's all right and then we'll probably go and have some drinks they're on you
34:39we'll be right back to the ship with the ship underway again a sea day is a chance to unwind from busy
34:57excursions triumphant or not with a range of other activities today there's an opportunity for some
35:05passengers to discover previously untapped artistic talents hello ladies and gentlemen welcome to the
35:12art of flower arrangement are you excited for today as the only florist on board noven is a very busy man
35:22please check if you have your flowers on the side but once on every cruise he invites some amateur
35:27assistants to join him for fun we will gonna start with your first flower arrangement he's getting
35:35the passengers to make their own creations the handset workshop class it's it's just about how
35:42to create arrangement for the guests to learn something probably they could apply it to their homes
35:50creating small arrangement shall we start now for the granaries try to find your galaxy leaves just this
35:58one try to cut them one inch above the leaf kim beat michelle in their fishing contest just but floristry
36:08might not be her strong suit i cannot cut this at all this is for using the bait tried too hard to be him
36:16really quick and brit pam is bemused do we have to do them all leaving husband barry to deliver some
36:25magic there yeah flower arranging is not my fault i must admit you take a vase stuff the flowers in and that's
36:38it everybody has it ready no i'll shove it in there so the upper part will be inserted into the middle
36:48of your oasis foam how'd you get through that material it's probably to one side of it no cut it well
36:56no otherwise it'll come off there
37:01there's all look neat
37:07on your right side can find some carnation there michelle's talent is blossoming you are doing this
37:14pretty fast pretty usual
37:19where's the other one go just put it in with it next to it
37:22pam meanwhile has yet more queries is there going to be room in there
37:28don't know if that's tall enough actually i think i'll put that one in there
37:31she also has an ever helpful husband you want it on the side of the rose i said she put the rose in
37:37the front and leave that one there and you put the other
37:39and i don't know if you want to take me over do you mind this is my creation not yours
37:48everybody's done could you please raise your flower your flower let's make a cheers to that
37:55cheers cheers
38:01afternoon cheers
38:04now don't get any ideas about flower arranging when we're home because it's going to be water
38:09vase flowers now the challenge is there we know how to do it a bit better next time don't we yeah
38:14and we've got a room full of flowers now which is very nice this is a lot harder than i thought
38:19it was but i'm happy with the the final product i just hope they all last because some of them i
38:23jammed in there but it was really fun some of them are floating don't forget to add water for this one
38:32i loved it as soon as i see the faces of the guests and very focused on creating flower arrangement
38:40during hands-on makes me proud that i'm a good florist on board
38:46cruising can be a very sociable experience dining partying and activities creating many opportunities
39:04to make new friends but there are always areas of a ship that lend themselves to quiet and reflection
39:11in the ocean sandra a beauty therapist and mum of three is traveling alone and reveling in a little
39:17me time in the ship's luxurious spa i love my family holiday however being on my own having time to read
39:27and relax is just priceless traveling solo for me is finally a chance after years of being a busy mum
39:38having small children at home being wife business owner it is amazing just to do certain things that
39:49i wanted to do when i was younger born and raised in croatia sandra married a brit and now lives in hampshire
39:57me and my husband enjoy joint holidays as well but we don't enjoy the same things he really enjoys golf
40:05where i find it the most boring thing in the world
40:11today there's no golf but there is a variety of excursions as the ship has docked in lanzarote
40:17the most northeasterly of the canary islands it has one of the most dramatic volcanic landscapes in
40:23the world partly shaped by massive eruptions in the 18th and 19th centuries due to its mineral rich
40:30volcanic soil year-round sunshine and minimal rainfall cacti thrive here for sandra a trip to
40:38see the island's noted cactus garden is a must last time i was in lanzarote 10 years ago with my mum
40:47cactus farm is a trip that we missed so i'm gonna video call and surprise her because she doesn't know
40:55so that's gonna be very special a 25-minute cab ride from the port wow delivers her to the location
41:05that's been on her wish list for so many years the love of plants really comes from my mum and her
41:12beautiful garden and as a child i would always help her out jardine de cactus is a botanical garden
41:20showcasing over four and a half thousand specimens of cacti oh it just looks better than i expected it
41:28to look set in a former quarry the garden contrasts the stark black earth with lush green cacti excuse

41:40thank you thank you so much where are you guys from would be north yorkshire dracula oh it's so
41:51lovely to bump into people especially from home because as a solo traveler sometimes it can be a
41:57little bit lonely have you yeah i've done solo traveling but i used to enjoy it you know you can go
42:03to your own place and do your own thing it's great and if it went wrong there was no one else to blame
42:07i think that's it there is never you don't have to worry about anybody but yourself no you can eat
42:12when you want to you can sleep when you want to yeah i love it explore the areas you want to
42:18and then obviously you get to meet lovely people to chat to yes yeah like yourself thank you enjoy the
42:27rest of your holiday bye now there are some 500 different cactus species on display here drawn from
42:35five continents in the wild cacti are mostly found in dry regions to minimize water loss by evaporation
42:43leaves are rare or completely absent and it's the stem that does the vital photosynthesis that creates
42:50food for the plant after an initial wander around it's time to call home mama mama
43:02god god god
43:04god i can show you where i can show you where i am mama
43:10she is very beautiful
43:14she remember that we were supposed to have been there within 10 years and we were not able to

43:22see
43:23It was a bit of a surprise for her because she didn't know was coming.
43:52So it was lovely.
43:54She really enjoyed seeing some of the plants and cacti.
43:59I would love to have her walk around with me, but this is the next best thing that I can do with her.
44:07It was, yeah, really, really nice.
44:09Very special.
44:09The ship has traveled thousands of miles through fair weather and fowl, bringing its passengers a wealth of memories with delicious dishes.
44:2710-10 would recommend.
44:29From around the world.
44:30I'm a little bit.
44:31We can eat this every day.
44:33And fantastic adventures on land.
44:35Wow, we're going backwards.
44:37We're going backwards last year.
44:39And sea.
44:41This is just amazing.
44:43I mean, if we had enough time, I'd go around again.
44:45I mean, good.
44:45Now, as the European voyage draws to a close, they're savoring the final hours.
44:55Oh, one last look before it's down.
44:57One last look to see, yes.
44:59It's absolutely beautiful, isn't it?
45:00It's lovely.
45:01I miss it.
45:02Never mind.
45:02We'll have another one.
45:04Oh, I'm sure we will.
45:05Well, we got two booked already, haven't we?
45:07It's a time to reminisce.
45:09The excursion.
45:10Oh, my God.
45:11It was raining.
45:11It was terrible.
45:12You just need to be prepared.
45:14Girl guide.
45:15Listen, we're Brits, we're always prepared for the rain.
45:17But this weather is absolutely perfect.
45:21I think it's great spending time together.
45:22You know, with this beautiful scenery.
45:25Oh, what scenery.
45:26Fantastic.
45:27Love the ocean.
45:28And it's a time to think about future plans.
45:31Cheers.
45:32See.
45:33Last day.
45:35I can't believe how fast it's gone by.
45:37So does this mean that you are sold on cruising?
45:40Yes.
45:41I'm sold.
45:43But for the ship's nearly 1,000 strong crew, there's a special commitment.
45:48It is a different type of life and a special type of life.
45:53You know, once it's touched, it's with you forever.
45:55Their work will continue with 3,000 new passengers due to board and more stunning destinations on the horizon.
46:03Well, from cruising the globe to finding a forever home, it's a new series of The Doghouse starting next week at 8.
46:15But don't tell that to the cats doing Countdown.
