00:00For three months now, the temple town of Dharamsthala in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada has
00:08been making global headlines. And the case has just taken another twist. The SIT, which
00:13has been digging up sites as part of its probe, raided the home of activist Mahesh Shetty Timareddy
00:18in Ujire. Officials say, Timareddy sheltered Chinnaya, the key accused, for nearly two months.
00:22With a court warrant in hand, the team searched his house for evidence. Timareddy isn't new to
00:27controversy. He heads the Rashtra Hindu Jagan Vedike and is out on bail in another case
00:31for allegedly making derogatory remarks against BJP leader B.L. Santosh.
00:35The probe itself took a sharp turn on August 23 when police arrested Chinnaya,
00:40whose identity had been a mystery till then. A Beltengaadi court later sent him to 10 days
00:44police custody. Chinnaya is a former sanitation worker. He claims that between 1995 and 2014,
00:50he was forced to bury several bodies in Dharamsthala. Among them, he says, were women and minors. He also
00:55alleged that some victims showed signs of sexual assault. Acting on his claims, the SIT began
01:00excavations. Skeletal remains were recovered from two sites. But investigators soon found
01:05inconsistencies in his statement, leading to his arrest. Meanwhile, on August 26, Karnataka BJP
01:10President, D.Y. Vijendra demanded that the case be handed over to the NIA. He also announced
01:15a Dharamsthala Chalo agitation from September 1, questioning the state government's handling of
01:19the probe and saying it has shaken the faith of devotees.
