00:00The government proposal to revive the law ministry has been welcomed by Bar Council leaders who say it would strengthen the legal system and improve access to justice.
00:10Bar Council President Ezri Abdelwahab said the Bar supported the re-establishment of a dedicated ministry, calling it vital for the development of the legal sector.
00:19Meanwhile, former Bar President Salim Bashir said the separate ministry would improve efficiency and strengthen public confidence with the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department absorbed into it.
00:30However, he cautioned that granting the ministry too much autonomous power could create bureaucratic obstacles that might slow reform.
00:38Ezri added that a standalone ministry would provide focus on law reform, access to justice, and engagement with stakeholders while dismissing concerns about extra bureaucracy.
00:47However, he said the ministry's effectiveness would depend on its structure, independence, resources, and clarity of mandate, with priorities including judicial infrastructure, modernization of laws, and constitutional consistency.
